his winter we had an amazing trade show at a new venue. It was filled with wonderful vendors and sponsors who truly care about our industry. We had record number of attendees that had the thirst for knowledge. I am excited to say that our feedback of our winter show was wonderful and 2020 is going to be even better. With the wet winter, it’s likely you and your team had plenty of time to prepare
for the season. Your trucks are maintained, your tools are sharpened, and your schedule is booking up quickly. The flood gates have opened, spring blooms are appearing, which means you are beginning to feel the chaos of the season. “Living in the moment means letting go of the past and not waiting for the future. It means living your life consciously, aware that each moment you breathe is a gift.” (Winfrey) Being in the moment allows

Most of us always are thinking “what’s next,” which does not allow our full attention to the present. Let’s go into our peak season and the rest of the year being in the moment with our clients and teams, while also remembering work-life balance for our families too. Let’s also be conscious of the decisions we make, which reflect on our industry as a whole and can have a positive impact on our communities. I hope you will be able to come and enjoy our tradeshow this summer. We decided to change the location so it can be a more hands-on experience. This year’s summer show will be on Thursday September 5th at Beckley Creek Park in Louisville. Our 2020 winter show will be back at the Holiday Inn on January 22nd and 23rd. I would like to take this time to thank all of our members of the KNLA. I appreciate everyone wanting to get more involved with our organization to advance the landscape industry. A leader is someone who wants to educate their team to be better and by being part of KNLA, you are doing that. Saying Goodbye to Two Awesome Board Members Eric Garris,

rent has been on the KNLA Board for years and had event planning down to a science. Brent is a doer in life and was definitely a doer on the KNLA Board. During our rough two-year timeframe, it seems likely that the KNLA may not have made it through without his leadership. Brent led the planning and execution of the Winter Education and Expo, our largest funded event of the year. He worked with designing logos, creating mailers, scheduling timeframes, procuring spaces, catering, loose ends — he really did it all! Although that was where Brent felt that he contributed most, he was present in everything KNLA and very thoughtful in his suggestions for ways to improve the association overall. In my first year of Executive Directorship, Brent helped to keep me on task, called when he thought I was missing something or needed to think something through further. He had this process down and honestly, I don’t know what I would have done without this past year to learn from him. Brent is a well-liked member of our Board of Directors and we all miss him. Brent is now hopefully able to spend more time with his family and friends, go on those trips that he always said “no” to, and continues to hit home runs for Monrovia! Thank you for your friendship, wisdom, and guidance, Brent!

eff Wallitsch has worked at his family’s business, Wallitsch Garden Center, learning the ins and outs of the business and gleaning everything there is to know from his parents. Jeff has recently moved into more of a leadership role at Wallitsch as he transitions to ownership in the hopes of continuing to provide quality plants and service for many years to come. We really appreciate his ability to provide his leadership to this organization as well!

ric has also been on the KNLA Board for quite some time and had his own special set of talents that he brought to the table all year long. Eric was the person we turned to at trade show time when we were discussing CEU’s and how to report, when to report, what to report, and who to report it to. He was the CEU paperwork magician! Eric had a pulse on what Arborists, specifically, needed and wanted and was always super helpful in providing the pertinent information needed to have a successful educational outing. Eric not only was helpful with CEU’s, he was always there on “Game Day” ready to help set up, help organize the speakers, presenters, and help make sure that everything went smoothly. We are happy for Eric in that he is working at the Guthrie Center in Bardstown managing projects for them. I’m sure he is doing a fantastic job and we hope he is enjoying every bit of it! Eric, we miss that friendly smile that you always provided to each and every one of us and your unwavering assistance to do whatever it takes. Thank you for your friendship, positive energy, and knowledge!
For those of you who have not had the pleasure of meeting Jeff Wallitsch either at a KNLA event or at Wallitsch Garden Center, you are truly missing out! Jeff has a been a board member for quite some time and has displayed immaculate character and strong work ethic in everything that has been put in front of him. Jeff has been front and center at all of the KNLA Winter Education Expos and Summer Outings checking folks in, printing badges, taking money and really just making sure that everything went smoothly for those events. He is also proficient with technology and helping us to be more innovative and streamlined. On that note, Jeff is currently working hard to bring our website into the 21st century. Over the past year, we have purchased a new membership and events database that will be seamlessly built into a new website for the KNLA. It will be fantastic and really easy to navigate. Please help us to welcome Jeff as our new Vice President of the KNLA. We look forward to his many ideas and leadership in the years to come!
KNLA Hall of Fame Inductee, Todd Ryan

lease help us to congratulate Todd Ryan from Valley Hill Nurseries, our newest member of the KNLA Hall of Fame! As I’m sure it was in the past years, this nomination was an easy one, a no-brainer so to speak. Todd joins this distinguished group of horticulturalists with a wealth of experience in the Green industry. Valley Hill Nurseries opened its doors in 1972 and Todd worked alongside his Dad learning about plants and the “old way” of growing and harvesting trees. Eventually Todd took over the business and has determined in his years of growing trees that the “old way” is still the best way! Todd has been on countless boards, the President of the KNLA, and he has brought a wealth of knowledge and friendship to those of us who know him. Oh the stories that we could tell….and were told at his award presentation! Thanks to David Listerman, Bob Couch, Kim Fritz, and Michael Mueller for giving him the proper introduction... or should we say roast? If you missed it, know there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. We are so excited that we are able to award Todd with this deserved distinction!

Craig Grigsby
We
are so excited to welcome Craig Grigsby to our KNLA Board. Craig has spent many years in the Nursery Industry. He studied Horticulture at Eastern Kentucky University and knew that working with plants was something that he wanted to do in some way. Many of you interacted with Craig in the years that he worked as a Sales Manager at Walnut Ridge Nursery & Garden Center. Now Craig is Kenton Abrams’ right hand man running the sales office and keeping everything organized over at the ever-growing Abrams Nursery. This is a huge undertaking. Having done this on his own for many years, Kenton understood that he needed someone who knew what it took to manage an office, keep records in order, and manage the day to day comings and goings. Who better than Craig, who already comes with a background with plants and sales management! Craig has been a great fit at Abrams and we know he will be a great fit on the KNLA Board. 2

You expressed how you enjoyed having a nice air-conditioned building, but missed the experience of getting your hands dirty so to speak. We found the perfect compromise in this venue! The Gheens Foundation lodge is a stunning indoor/outdoor event space nestled along Floyds Fork, a classic Kentucky stream in the beautiful Parklands. We have plenty of space inside for vendors, lunch, and an indoor training space, and we can get outside for some hands-on learning. Dr. McNeil and Stephanie Tittle are tirelessly working with potential trainers and companies, and with the assistance of Tom Smarr to give us the lay of the land, we are sure to come up with something special! fter literal sweat and tears putting this outing together, we can safely say that it was a big success! It was so great to see all of the friendly faces and to add this to what will be many more to come!
Our New Venue: We tried a new venue this year at the Holiday Inn, Louisville East. It was clean and the individual rooms were beautiful! We are getting almost too big for the spot, but it had an intimate and comfortable feeling amongst our close friends and everyone felt involved. The layout was a bit of a struggle at first because we couldn’t “fit” all of the exhibitors in the event hall, but the way it worked out was even better for everyone involved. I’m betting that we even have people requesting to be in the hallway next year!

We appreciate members and nonmembers alike showing up time and time again to not only learn new things, but also support the KNLA. I was having a conversation with a couple wonderful plantsmen the other day, Ryan Martin and Joseph Hillenmeyer, and we were talking about how companies need to invest in their employees by encouraging time away from the daily grind to grow their minds and get reenergized and excited about plants and YOUR business again. I hope that this event fit the bill and I want to thank those of you that took advantage of the 4+ option and sent four or more of your employees for TWO days of fun and learning: • Enviroscape in Madison, IN • Landscape Workshop (formerly Henkel Denmark) in Lexington, KY • Masonic Homes in Louisville, KY • The Louisville Zoo in Louisville, KY • Greenhaven Tree Care in Louisville, KY • Pro Turf Inc in Louisville, KY • Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY • 21st Century Parks in Louisville, KY • Zeppas Lawn Service in Prospect, KY We know there are less expensive ways to do this, but we try to make this more than just about CEUs. We want this to feel a lot like getting together with family
and friends a few times per year to share ideas, learn new things, and meet new people. We hope that is the feeling that you are “picking up” because that’s we think we are “putting down.”
Training Info: Our intent was to bring as many CEU’s to the table as possible to make it worth the money and time spent for our attendees. We also spent extra time and funds to procure new and interesting presenters so that we are offering something different from the same line ups that you always see at these events. Thank you to those of you that turned in the surveys for training! After evaluating the responses, we believe we succeeded in providing a valuable two days of training! There are always ways that we can improve and we appreciate your feedback in that way as well!
A few takeaways: • Everyone loves Dr. Fountain! Comments showed that you want to learn more about his topic on Tree & Landscape Appraisal. • Dave Leonard’s class on Pruning Principles and BMPS was well received in all of the surveys received. It is suggested that a hands-on training would be good here!
• It was fun to have Rick Darke here on Day 2! Someone mentioned his presentation as “Very theoretical/thought provoking” and that they nailed it! • Chris Chandler is always a treat to hear speak of the Green Heart Project! We are so fortunate to be on the leading edge of this kind of research right here in Kentucky. We plan to do periodic updates on this.
Exhibitors: Our exhibitors are the best in the business! We had 37 exhibitors, that was four more than last year, so we are growing and hope to have more for 2020. With a new venue, we had to make some “on the fly” changes and we appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility as we worked through those growing pains. We had some new faces this year and we want to thank those of you that gave the KNLA Educational Outing and Expo a chance. We hope to see you back next year! H
ighlandbrook Nursery is located in Elkton, nestled between the cities of Russellville and Hopkinsville. Owned and operated by Ashley Short, Highlandbrook offers a full range of products and services. Ashley was raised on the family farm that is now Highlandbrook. He always knew that was where he wanted to live, but Ashley was lured away to the big city of Nashville where he began doing landscaping in 1993. He found that he had a love for plants and wanted to do more than just plant them for others. Over time he truly wanted to get home to help out with the farm and his aging parents. They made him an offer that he couldn’t refuse in the form of a plot of land where he was able to build the foundation of Highlandbrook Nursery and begin growing his own containerized plants. He quickly decided that this was where his business would continue to grow, and in 2000 Ashley decided that he wanted to break into the rapidly growing B & B market. He continued to provide landscaping services to his clients and began to provide his own material! This wasn’t just a great business plan, but it gave Ashley the ability to grow the types of plants that he had the most interest in. He has always been attracted to natives and native cultivars. Because of this love of plants, he constantly has his eye out for interesting ideas and varieties that are new to him and others. One of his favorites, Juniperus virginiana ‘Green Point’, was introduced by Mike Hayman, a Louisville local and fellow respected plantsman. Mike Hayman turned him on to this plant at a local trade show and now this is one of his best sellers. He uses it not only on his landscape jobs but sells it to his many customers in the region.

Ashley is joined by his wife Carol, who makes sure everything runs smoothly in the office. They make the perfect team! I was very impressed with the work and creativity involved in Ashley’s landscape plans and installation. Here They Come! Bernheim’s Exciting New Visitors

ernheim Forest welcomed three GIANT new visitors to its GIANT forest this Spring. As part of Bernheim’s 90th Anniversary, renowned Danish artist Thomas Dambo created three Forest Giants — larger than life sculptures made from recycled and repurposed materials which otherwise would be thrown away. These whimsical creations demonstrate that trash and waste can be valuable resources, and Dambo hopes they will inspire people to not only recycle, but to also think more deeply about the impact that our lifestyle choices have on the planet. Bernheim Executive Director Dr. Mark Wourms also wants the Forest Giants to remind visitors of the importance of large forest blocks like Bernheim. Wourms said Bernheim strives to create experiences where people can interact with both art and nature, enhancing and inspiring deeper connections with the natural world. “Ninety years ago, when I. W. Bernheim purchased 13,300 acres of land as a gift to the people of Kentucky, part of his vision was that this land would be a place for the people of Kentucky

to further their love of the beautiful in nature and in art,” said Wourms. “Through art, people can experience nature in a whole new way, which is why we are thrilled to host Thomas and his team. These giants are a wondrous addition to our 16,137-acre forest, which we think is already a pretty magical place — a place where people connect with nature, a place where thousands of plant and wildlife species flourish and a place that is a source of clean air and clean water for the entire Greater Louisville Region.” “Once all three are completed, they will ‘live’ at different sites throughout Bernheim — some easy and not so easy to spot — but all are fun to discover,” Wourms said. Dambo is at Bernheim as part of its Sited@Bernheim program, which generates site-specific art projects intended to explore our relationship with nature through the lens of art. These Forest Giants are expected to remain in place for at least three years, and will provide fun photo opportunities, programs, and more. Bernheim is a passionate supporter of arts in nature and has a long history of promoting art in the landscape through programs like Sited@Bernheim, among others.

As stated above, there are three of these mythical beauties and they are placed strategically around the park and part of the fun is finding them. If you go during a busy time, you won’t have to look far, you’ll just be able to follow the crowds. Due to the overwhelming response of these beauties, Bernheim is overflowing with visitors. To get the best viewing and to beat the crowds, it is best to arrive before 10AM or after 5PM. Park hours are listed to the right.
