A Lasting Legacy

A Powerful Influence

As

Our

the 2014–2015 school year comes to a close, I want to reflect on the words of Albert Pine, a 19th century American writer: “What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.” As your MAC president, I am proud of all our coaches. I feel that each has made a difference in the lives of our students and communities, and each will leave a legacy long after our names have been retired from a coaching roster. Our All-Star teams have represented our association with exemplary character and pride, which is a result of the great job our coaches are doing. It truly has been a pleasure to represent you as your president this year. I will always treasure this experience you have afforded me to have. I would like to give a special thanks to Johnny Mims, our executive director, for his direction in guiding the MAC and making it the best association in the country. Also, thanks to Sarah Angelo and Lindsey Gay for their dedication to the association. Please don’t hesitate to call me if I can be of service to any of you. May God bless each of you throughout the remainder of this school year and many years after.

most powerful resource in the coaching profession is ourselves. We are in the people business; we are in the relationship business. With that in mind, this is a tremendous responsibility. If you look across your school’s entire coaching staff, there is a great mixture of young and old coaches, with a wide range of experience and tenure. If you are a veteran coach, I am willing to bet that there is an individual or group of coaches that helped shape your core principles in the profession. If you are a young coach, it’s OK to ask for help. Take time to observe other coaches within your sport and outside the sports you coach. Ask yourself, “What makes this coach successful beyond his or her wins or losses?” As coaches, we must continue to promote the important and powerful influence we have through sports. The MAC continues to be blessed with talented and dedicated coaches who help thousands of young men and women grow into adulthood. The challenges our young athletes face do in fact help them as they move forward in life. Thanks to all of you coaches for what you do.
