President’s Message

Keeping in Touch A

fter a slow start to spring, I trust that we are all well into our summertime turfgrass-management activities. At my turf farm, we have been adjusting our mowing heights and applying treatments to make our grass healthy and sellable for the warm weather. Hopefully, Mother Nature will cooperate with all of us in the turf industry through the rest of the summer. We are fortunate in Maryland to have many resources to aid us in our profession, like the University of Maryland team of turfgrass professors, the various turf industry associations and the many colleagues and vendors willing to give a helping hand. In this issue of MTC Turf News, you will find our annual membership directory. You should be able to use

6

MTC Turf News

this directory for obtaining up-to-date contact information about the members in the Maryland Turfgrass Council. This can be a great tool for keeping track of friends and colleagues who may have changed jobs or locations. It can be a resource for advice and help. It’s also a great directory of our vendors. These companies and suppliers find value with their membership in the MTC. Their support and sponsorships help offset the expenses of our conferences and seminars and help us keep event registration costs down to an acceptable level. Please look to these vendors first when pricing your supply and product needs. Other ways to keep in touch with fellow turf professionals is to attend the UMD Summer Field Day and, in the

fall, the Angie Cammarota Golf Tournament for Turfgrass Research. This year’s Field Day will be held on July 15 at the turf research farm in College Park. At the Field Day, we can experience new product research and hear about the latest turf trials. The Angie Cammarota Golf Tournament is set for September 29 at beautiful Queenstown Harbor golf course. Start thinking about your foursome, and make plans to attend both events. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

From the MTC Executive Director

Change Is Coming! W

ell, it looks like another “normal” year with the Maryland weather. The only thing normal in Maryland’s weather is change. A wise man (my father) often told me, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 20 minutes, and it will change,” and quite often, he was correct. Often, our changing weather presents the challenges that cause Maryland to have the multibillion dollar turfgrass industry from which we, as professionals, strive every day to make our living and which we all choose to confront every day. Just consider the changes you have seen in this industry since you became a turfgrass professional. No matter whether you work in sod production, hydro-seeding, athletic field management, landscaping, lawn maintenance, golf course maintenance or any other occupation dealing with turfgrass, change is the only thing that’s certain. When I started 40+ years ago, the sod industry was planting common Kentucky bluegrass pastures. After a few years, the farmers would remove the cows, bust up the cow pies, clean up the weeds and harvest by hand, roll the sod by hand and load the trucks by hand. All we had back then were the early varieties of Merion KY bluegrass, Kenblue (common) KY bluegrass and, eventually, Pennlawn Red Fescue. Then we had the first KY bluegrass hybrid, Adelphi, which caused more change. Today, sod is produced from many varieties that are evaluated by the University of Maryland and Virginia Tech and published annually on a Recommended List of Varieties (often referred to as the University’s TT-77 publication). Sod is now cut, rolled and

8

MTC Turf News

palletized by machine and can be harvested with a single driver. Pallets are loaded by “piggyback” forklifts that go with the sod to the job site on the same truck for ease of unloading. You might say these changes were necessary or were demanded by our customers. Regardless of the reason, change is required if we intend to stay in business! Your Turfgrass Council is no different. Change must also occur, or it too will be set aside as you find other updated sources of information and other ways to network. Since 1976, when we held the first MTC Turfgrass Conference at a motel in Lanham, your MTC board has strived to make the changes that you wanted and/ or needed, resulting in the yearly Turfgrass Conference. This, too, has been the standard for 40 years, and it is time for change. The MTC Turfgrass 2016 conference will NOT occur as usual. Instead, the MTC and the VTC (Virginia Turfgrass Council) have joined forces to create the new M.A.T.E. (Mid-Atlantic Turfgrass Expo), to be held January 25–28, 2016, at the Fredericksburg Convention Center. ALL PROCEEDS from the M.A.T.E. conference will be equally divided between the University of Maryland and Virginia Tech turfgrass programs. Fredericksburg was chosen for the first joint conference because it is centrally located when you look at the area of both states. It also has a huge facility, is reasonably priced, is easy to get to with ample free parking and is surrounded by several reasonably priced hotels and restaurants. Fredericksburg

is only a little more than an hour from College Park. Take a look at http://vaturf.org/ turfconference/2016_conference_floor_ plan.html to see the size of the tradeshow and the companies that have already committed to exhibit. However, there is still plenty of room for you to exhibit if you are interested. Just give me a call, and I will send all the pertinent information to you. For all those who are wondering, there will be the usual Maryland Pesticide Applicator License Recertification, as well as the Maryland Fertilizer Applicator License Recertification, offered at the M.A.T.E. Conference. Also, for those who are thinking, “There is no way I can send my entire crew to a four-day conference,” don’t worry — your MTC board is planning for that, too. Plans are already underway to hold several MTC-sponsored, singleday conferences, at various locations across Maryland, where you can get your six-hour recertification for pesticides and your two-hour recertification for fertilizer applications. Please watch the MTC website www.MDTurfCouncil.org for the various class dates. M.A.T.E. gives you all kinds of opportunities, including a larger network of professionals gathered in one location, a large tradeshow complete with large equipment and so much, much more! So, mark your calendars today for January 25–28, 2016. You don’t want to miss this!

Turf Terps Continue Their Winning Ways In 2015 By Kevin Mathias, Ph.D., University of Maryland

Brian Hogan, Scott Hebert, Dr. Kevin Mathias and Ryan Higgins pose with the winning trophy and their medals at the Awards Ceremony during the 2015 STMA National Conference.

The

Turf Terps continued to excel in national turf competitions in 2015. The Maryland team of Scott Hebert, Brian Hogan and Ryan Higgins captured the 2015 STMA Student Challenge at the Sports Turf Managers Association national conference in Denver, Colorado, held January 21-23. This year’s competition had 31 teams vying for top honors, and the Maryland team won the fouryear competition section, outpacing two strong Penn State teams. This year’s win was a three-peat performance for the program and allowed seniors Brian Hogan and Ryan Higgins to pass on their winning ways to a new crop of Turf Terps. The STMA team of Hebert, Higgins and Hogan received a $4,000 check from SAFE. This award will be used to enhance program instruction in the area of sports turf. The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) hosted the 2015 Collegiate Turf Bowl held in conjunction with their winter conference in San Antonio, Texas, on February 26. This year’s Collegiate Turf Bowl hosted 69 teams, and the Turf Terps teams placed 2nd, 19th and 23rd. The Maryland squad known as the “Big H” team (their last names all started with the letter H) were Jimmy Halley (IAA), Scott Hebert (IAA), Ryan Higgins (PSLA) and Brian Hogan (IAA). As reigning champions, the “Big H” team’s main goal was to hold onto the Championship Trophy. Even though they scored higher in this year’s competition (431 points) compared to their winning score of 425 in 2014, they could not outscore a determined Penn State team that amassed 449 points to set a Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition record. Still, the “Big H” team received a $2,000 check from John Deere during the awards ceremony. Maryland’s 19th place team also known as the “Dream Team” consisted of IAA students Jeff Bynaker, John Critzos, Marvin Martinez and Ian Patrican. The Turf Terps team of Shaun Clark (IAA), Gabe Gammill (IAA) and Will Goundry (PSLA) far exceeded Dr. Mathias’s expectations and surged to 23rd place. Students commented on how the conference and the competition enhanced their networking skills and a new sense of camaraderie with fellow students. Shaun Clark explained that the trip to the San Antonio was a great overall experience, and he said he couldn’t wait until next year’s competition. The GCSAA Collegiate Turf Bowl and the STMA Student Challenge competitions cover various areas relating to golf turf

In addition to the competitions, the UMD Turf teams attended various educational and hospitality events during these national conferences. Special thanks to John Deere and SAFE for sponsoring these national competitions. •

Cover Story

Compost to Reduce Runoff and Lawn Fertilizer Use By Mark Carroll, Ph.D., University of Maryland

New

residential lots can be among the most challenging areas on which to establish turf. Poor soil chemical and physical conditions, combined with lessthan-optimal seeding times, can result in low-density lawns. Poorly established lawns increase the potential for runoff from landscape areas and drive some new homeowners to use more lawn fertilizer than homeowners residing in older, more mature developments. Improvement of poor-quality soils is often accomplished by amending soil with compost prior to turfgrass establishment. High-volume additions of compost alleviate soil compaction, improve the water-holding ability of the soil and reduce runoff by improving soil infiltration. The key to improving soil physical properties is to ensure that a large amount of organic matter is added into the soil and that heavy equipment is kept off the site (especially when the soil is wet) after incorporation of the compost. A typical recommendation for amending soil with compost is to spread 1" (or 3 cubic yards per 1,000 ft2) of material over the soil prior to incorporating it. Recognition that adding more than this amount will improve the infiltration capability of most fine-textured soils has led some states and municipalities to recommend that soils be amended with 2" or more of compost to reduce stormwater losses from the site. For example, the Virginia Stormwater Management Handbook recommends that 2" to 4" of compost be incorporated into the top 6" to 10" of soil to

reduce runoff from compacted soil sites where turf is to be established. In areas where the lawn will receive runoff from impervious surfaces (such rooftop downspouts or adjacent paved areas), higher rates of compost and deeper rates of incorporation are recommended. In Pennsylvania, the guidance provided in the state’s Stormwater Best Management Practices Manual for infertile, non-compacted soils is to mix one part compost with two parts soil. Most rototillers can till soil to a depth of only 5" to 6".

Thus, if one were to follow the Pennsylvania guidelines, 1.6" to 2" of compost would be spread over the soil surface prior to incorporation to reduce stormwater runoff. We measured runoff losses from a silt loam soil amended with 2" compost at our turf farm as part of a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation-funded project and found that these plots had about 50% less runoff when compared to plots that were not amended with compost prior to establishment (Figure 1).

Cumulative runoff expressed as a percent of total precipitation for six events that generated runoff in 2013 and eight events that generated runoff in 2014. Plots were either amended with 2" of yard-trimmings compost to depth of 5" and seeded with a lawn seed mixture containing 95% tall fescue (TF) and 5% microclover (MC), or simply rototilled, leveled and seeded with 100% tall fescue. The compost-amended plots were not fertilized during the study. The tall fescue plot received 3.0 lbs. N/1,000 ft2 per year using urea and sulfur-coated urea after establishment.

Past research conducted by others has revealed that much higher reductions in runoff can be expected from compacted, fine-textured soils that are amended with greater amounts of compost. There are situations, such as when the soil becomes saturated due to frequent rainfall events or when there is an impermeable layer within 3' of the soil surface, that will moderate the ability of a compost-amended soil to reduce runoff. Saturated soil conditions typically occur from late fall to early spring when evaporative losses are at a minimum. Compacted soil layers below normal tillage depths can be overcome by incorporating the use of a solid-shank ripper as part of the soil-preparation/compost-incorporation process. In general, compost incorporation is not recommended as a means of reducing runoff at sites having slopes that exceed 10%. In addition to reducing runoff, highvolume additions of compost also create a medium that enhances plant growth. Turfgrass responses seen with the addition of compost vary with compost amount and type, but what is generally observed is enhanced establishment, root growth and aboveground biomass production. Enhancements in growth can be attributed to improvements in both the physical and chemical properties of the soil. In the case of the latter, the incorporation of 1" of yard-trimmings compost possessing 0.85% N (wet weight basis, bulk density ~ 43 lbs./ft3) will typically add about 30 pounds of N per 1,000 ft2 to the soil. Biosolid composts derived from municipal sewage tend to have a higher N content than yard-trimmings compost. For example, the incorporation of 1" of a Baltimorebased, sewage-sludge compost (1.7% N wet weight basis, bulk density ~ 32 lbs./ ft3) will add approximately 45 pounds of N per 1,000 ft2 to the soil. With most (sewage-sludge compost) to nearly all of N (yard-trimmings compost) being present in the organic form, this nutrient will become available for plant use slowly over time. Many factors influence the rate at which organic N becomes available for plant use. Thus, unlike manufactured, controlled-release

fertilizers, it is very difficult to predict the amount of nitrogen in compost that will become available for plant use (i.e., mineralized) over time. A general rule

year. Mature composts are frequently given a first-year N mineralization rate of 10%. Using this figure and the justdescribed rule of thumb would predict that no nitrogen fertilizer would need to be applied to a tall fescue lawn for the first 2 years after amending the soil with 2" of compost (Figure 2). Additionally, the use of either compost material would supply more than half of the minimum recommended amount of N fertilizer for a tall fescue lawn in the third year of growth. Accounting for the mineralization of nitrogen from composted sewagesludge sources is standard practice used in the development of nutrient-management plans for agricultural crops. Using the mineralization rates provided in the Maryland Nutrient Management Manual for a composted sewage sludge, the projected amount of N released from 2" of this type of compost would be sufficient to meet the minimum recommended annual N rate for a tall fescue lawn in Maryland for at least 4 years. However, it must be emphasized again that these are only projections. Actual turfgrass N needs with the incorporation of compost

need to be based on observations of turf performance over time. The states of Virginia and Pennsylvania currently consider the incorporation of compost to compacted soils a best management practice to reduce stormwater runoff. In Virginia, the incorporation of high-volume amounts of compost to lawn areas to alleviate compaction allows a stormwater engineer to calculate lower stormwater losses from a site than when no amendment of the soil with compost takes place. The calculation of lower stormwater volumes is a distinct advantage to the developer because fewer dollars then need to be spent to intercept or treat stormwater that is generated within the development. The cost of structures needed to treat stormwater is borne by the developer. In Maryland, no such credit in the calculation of stormwater runoff is made for lawn areas amended with compost. Thus, a builder has no economic incentive to adopt this practice. Moreover, with the recent interpretation of the Maryland Fertilizer Use Act of 2011 to treat bulk compost as a fertilizer material, amending the soil of lawn areas with anything more than 1/20" to 1/12" of compost is now prohibited. The restriction just cited is based solely on the 2.5 lb. of N per 1,000 ft2 singleapplication cap applied to the two compost materials discussed above and does not consider additional restrictions that may be associated with the phosphorous content of the compost. The incorporation of less than 1/10" of compost will likely have little influence on soil physical properties and minimal impact on reducing lawn fertilizer use. Going forward, lawns established in new developments in Maryland will need to rely on frequent overseeding and aeration, the return of clippings, high mowing heights and/or use of design features that intercept and infiltrate runoff as the primary ways of reducing lawn runoff and fertilizer use. In Virginia and Pennsylvania, amending soils in new developments with high amounts of composts provides an additional approach that can be used to achieve these two goals. •

tank-mixed with primisulfuron, PoaCure at 52 fl. oz./A controlled roughstalk bluegrass 88% and equivalent to fall or fall-followed-by-spring applications of PoaCure at 78 fl. oz./A (Figure 1). The high rate of PoaCure controlled roughstalk bluegrass higher than PoaCure at the lower rate, regardless of application timing (data not shown). PoaCure did not injure the desired turf regardless of application rate and timing. Fall only and fall-followed-byspring applications of PoaCure had a turf cover of 80% to 90% and higher than primisulfuron or amicarbazone alone, 1 YAIT (data not shown). •

All treatments were sprayed at two-week intervals. Treatments also included a non-treated check for comparison. The interaction of location by treatment was insignificant for both roughstalk bluegrass control and turf cover, so data were pooled over locations for mean separation. One year after initial treatment (YAIT), fall and fall-followedby-spring applications of PoaCure at 78 fl. oz./A controlled roughstalk bluegrass 90% and higher than PoaCure at 52 fl. oz./A at all applications timings, except fall applications of PoaCure at 52 fl. oz./A followed by PoaCure plus primisulfuron in spring (Figure 1). oughstalk bluegrass (Poa trivialis) is one of the most troublesome weeds of creeping bentgrass and Kentucky bluegrass fairways. Chemical control options for roughstalk bluegrass are limited in cool-season turf. Under development by Moghu Research Center, methiozolin (Poa Cure) is a new isoxazoline herbicide that has been reported in Virginia and Korea to control roughstalk bluegrass with safety to creeping bentgrass, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue. Our objectives were to compare various application timings and tank mixtures of PoaCure for rough-stalk bluegrass control in creeping bent-grass and Kentucky bluegrass fairways. Trials were initiated on October 22, 2013, on a creeping bentgrass fairway at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech (Radford, VA) and Highland Golf Course at Primland Resort (Meadows of Dan, VA), and on a Kentucky bluegrass fairway at the Glade Road Research Facility (Blacksburg, VA). Treatments included: • PoaCure at 52 or 78 fl. oz./A applied 4 times in fall or spring or 2 times in fall and spring • PoaCure at 52 fl. oz./A applied twice in fall followed by PoaCure plus primisulfuron at 0.5 oz./A or amicarbazone (Xonerate) at 2 oz./A applied in spring • primisulfuron or amicarbazone applied twice in spring • bispyribac-sodium (Velocity) at 2 oz./A (only at creeping bentgrass sites) applied twice in fall and spring
