here we are ending another unusual Maryland Summer. If you remember, last summer was so wet we were trying to deal with severe Gray Leaf Spot that not only was attacking perennial ryegrass but was actually devastating large areas or entire fields of tall fescue. The fields were so wet the grass never had a chance to dry. Anyone who missed the University of Maryland Summer Turfgrass Field Day on July 17th at the Turfgrass Research Farm missed a great opportunity to learn how best to react to “Summer Turfgrass Problems” or to “Properly Chose the Best Cultivars for My Needs.” Several years ago, this field day was said to be oriented to and for Golf Course Superintendents because of a few studies on bentgrass greens, and other turf that is primarily a golf issue. But this was not the case then or now as this field day dealt with the many diseases and issues we all face as Turfgrass Professionals in Maryland. It is just as important for an Athletic Field Manager, a Lawn Care Technician, or a Sod Farmer as it for a Golf Course Superintendent to identify “Brown Patch,” “Pythium,” Gray Leaf Spot” and other summer problems. This field day is a perfect opportunity to see what works, what is coming, and what is a waste of money. Unfortunately, I had to miss this year myself due to a work-place accident just before the field day. This was doubly unfortunate as this was the last Field Day of Dr. Joe Roberts. Joe has been working with and for us for the last 4 years and doing an excellent job not only filling Dr. Pete Dernoeden’s large shoes, but also adding his own special actions and efforts to his work here in Maryland. Unfortunately, both Joe’s parents and his in-laws are getting older and developing health issues. After deep consideration and a lot of praying Joe has accepted a position with Clemson University. This loss for us will be a big asset for Clemson. Joe is not totally abandoning us as his grad student will remain here so Joe will be back from time to time and he has agreed to be one of the guest speakers at the Dec. 10 MTC Winter Turfgrass Conference at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City. So mark your calendars now to come to the conference and visit with Joe. Along with Dr. Roberts, we already have commitments from Dr. Jim Brosnan, Knoxville; Dr. Travis Gannon, North Carolina State; Dr. John Kaminski, Penn State. You will not want to miss this conference!!

University of Maryland Field Day Summary – 2019
A
typical mid-July day made for hot, humid conditions for 125 attendees at the University of Maryland Turfgrass Field Day on Wednesday, July 17. The event provided turfgrass managers from the golf course, sports field, and lawn/landscape industries the opportunity to get a first-hand view of the turfgrass field research conducted by the UMD turfgrass research team. In addition to attracting turf managers throughout the state, there were also several regional
technical representatives in attendance as well. Attendees were divided up into two groups and taken on rotations around the different research plots by Dr. Joseph Roberts, Geoff Rinehart, Joe Doherty, and Dr. Bill Kreuser, a field day guest speaker from the University of Nebraska. Much of Dr. Kreuser’s research has focused on the effects of plant growth regulators, and UMD is replicating one of his research trials which he spoke about at the field day.

Before and after the field tour, attendees had the opportunity to view research and safety posters and visit with local vendors. We would like to extend a special word of thanks to the Maryland Turfgrass Council and the Mid-Atlantic Golf Course Superintendents Association for assisting with registration; and sponsors Bayer, Site One, BASF, Landscape Supply, TESCO, Finch Services, Genesis Syngenta, Luck EcoSystems, Helena, Crop Production Services and Harrell’s. On the “turf disease loops,” participants had the opportunity to view several fungicide field trials which included evaluation of different fungicide programs, research on how cultural factors influence disease development, biorational/organic products, and new products which will be available to turf managers next year. On the “management loops,” participants were able to view the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program trials and Cooperative Turfgrass Breeder Trials and herbicide evaluations for sedge control. After the formal field day activities, attendees enjoyed BBQ from Smokes On U, steamed crabs, and beer underneath the big top tent. Not only was field day a great opportunity to see the research plots in action, but it is a great opportunity to take a little break from the daily grind of summer and catch up with colleagues as well. The
MASTMA ANNOUNCES BMP MANUAL
Mid-Atlantic Sports Turf Managers Association (MASTMA) is proud to announce the development of a critical Best Management Practices (BMP) manual. This research-based document is being developed specifically for the Sports Turf Manager and will integrate science based best practices in the areas of integrated pest management utilizing federal and local nutrient and pesticide regulations; protecting natural resources; and most importantly protecting the athletes and community who utilize the fields. The BMP manual will afford turf professionals the opportunity to be recognized as professionals and environmental stewards. Fundraising efforts were launched during the first quarter of 2019 and the MASTMA Board of Directors successfully hit the initial goal of $15,000 and are now able to move forward with hiring Kingsbury Consulting to begin the manual. To date, major donors include Bayer, the Maryland Turfgrass Council (MTC), Turf Equipment and Supply Company, the Sports Turf Managers Association Chapter of Illinois, and Finch Services, Inc. MASTMA member and CFSM, Patrick Coakley states, “By reaching our first plateau for the BMP project makes this real now; it is no longer just an idea. This is now going to happen. Pen hits paper and the document is being built. I think this will give us the momentum we need to finish out the fundraising portion and get this done.” Kingsbury Consulting has successfully completed BMPs in several other states prior to beginning the Mid-Atlantic BMP.

Kingsbury Consulting’s Principal, Stacey Kingsbury, holds a master’s degree in environmental management from Yale University, and has expertise in water quality, environmental management and strategic communication. MASTMA President, Jeremy Driscoll states, “The BMP being produced for the Mid-Atlantic Sports Turf Managers Association will be a tool that can be used by anyone in the Sports Turf Industry. It will not only provide the most productive, technical and safest methods of performing day to day operations, it will be a guideline for advancing the essential mandatory routine care of athletic fields to provide the best playing surfaces possible. It will also serve as a voice to government legislators, public individuals, and anyone who stands to listen and understand that those performing these tasks on sports fields are educated, trained, and licensed in the proper usage of equipment, pesticide applications and other areas of expertise.” MASTMA plans on using the Mid-Atlantic BMP as a template that other locations are able to share and replicate. Coakley adds, “The long-term goal for the BMP project is to make a universal sports turf template to be used by all local STMA chapters nationwide.” •
