Adaptation We
started the year with mild weather in February and early into March. Bermudagrass was almost ready to wake up as many of us were starting to rush to get out pre-emergent herbicides for crabgrass. In almost an instant the weather turned a 180 and the cold was back to stay. Covid-19 quarantines, business closures, and Shelter in Place Orders were all that anyone talked about. No matter who we were or where we fit into the turfgrass industry — landscape management, sport turf managers, golf course superintendents, sod farmers, sales representatives, or on a supporting staff — we all had to do one thing, adapt. The Maryland Turfgrass Council needed to adapt quickly to support the membership. We needed to get our members Pesticide and Professional Fertilizer Credits not knowing when we would be available to be in a classroom or conference setting. Because of the joint effort of the University of Maryland and MTC, the first online re-certification for BOTH Pesticide and Professional Fertilizer Credits for Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland Department of Natural Resources was conducted via Zoom on June 26th. The Maryland Turfgrass Council is here for you, our members, while we adapt together. I hope everyone has been able to adapt in one way or another for this year. The Mid-Atlantic region has always been unpredictable during the summer months but working through weeks with high temperatures followed by heavy rains, as turf managers we had to adapt. Going into leaf season and preparing for the winter months we never know what is around the corner. Maybe by the time you read this we will have a promising cure for the COVID-19 virus, or maybe we will have 5" of snow followed by a heat wave. Whatever happens I know as turf managers in Maryland we will adapt. The decision to host the Maryland Turfgrass Conference online has been made and if you are not already seeing information in your in-box or mailboxes about registration it is on the way. I am looking forward to working with everyone as we prepare for what is next. Whatever is on the horizon I know we will do one thing, adapt.

Will There Be A 2020 MTC Turfgrass Conference? YES!! W
ith the Covid-19 Pandemic we have seen almost everything in life change this year, including many things we have always depended upon being cancelled. That is fine if we are talking about a ball game, dining at our favorite restaurant, or even just going shopping. BUT that places us all in limbo when you need recertification and continuing education credits to keep our licenses, get promotions, and work in our chosen profession.
The MTC will not let you down ! Right now, we are scheduled to do our usual informative conference on December 8, 2020 again at Turf Valley Resort and Golf Course. However, at the time of writing this, we are limited by government regulations to no more than 250 attendees. This falls far below the usual number of attendees. The MTC Officers and Board of Directors refuse to just cancel like other states have done, leaving you hanging, or scrambling, to get your required recertifications, CEU’s and other credits to continue to work legally. Therefore, we have been investigating other venues or methods to still provide you the experience of learning about the latest improvements and advances in our industry from some of the most wellknown turfgrass researchers and experts across the country. One alternative is to do the conference outside in the fresh air. However, six (6) plus hours sitting in the cold, rain or possibly snow just does not seem conducive to learning. Instead we are looking into how we can bring you the same high-quality speakers and interaction with our faithful sponsors and suppliers of our industry, even the fantastic out of state speakers, by looking at several different types

of Webinar or video program. It is our goal, regardless the method chosen, to provide the three (3) usual Education Tracks including “Golf Course Management” “Lawn Care Management” and of course “Sports Turf Management” and provide “Sponsor Interviews” throughout the day. Regardless of which option we settle on, we will do the “Attendance Form” just like you have done at our previous conferences where you will be given a number during each speaker’s talk. You will simply have to record that number on your form, complete the other requested information and either e-mail or copy and U.S. Mail the form back to the MTC Office. We will complete the State’s sign-in sheets and supply copies of everything to each of the states in which you need recertification. You will receive the ‘Attendance Sheet” and the log on information once you submit your registration to the MTC Office. We intend to apply for recertification and CEU’s for MD Pesticide, MD Fertilizer, DC Pesticide, VA Pesticide, WV Pesticide, PA Pesticide, DE Pesticide, NJ Pesticide, NY Pesticide Licenses plus Golf Course Superintendents points, Sports Turf Managers CEU’s and any others you ask for far enough in advance to complete the requirements for the requested recertification or CEU credits. Regardless, hang on, keep checking the MTC News and the MTC Webpage for updates.

illyanna is a student at the University of Maryland College Park, where she is striving to obtain her BS Degree in Plant Science with a concentration in Plant Biology. Once she completes her degree in Plant Biology she intends to pursue a MS Degree in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She hopes to continue her involvement in the Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) while also interning or working at a medical cannabis dispensary while completeing graduate school. Upon graduating she would like to find employment as a cannabis grower, reseacher, or perhaps an Extension Specialist. Her ultimate goal is to own her own natural-style organic farm and nursery to produce all-natural food and medicine to help benefit the lives of those around her. Her desire is to help transform more people from pharmaceutical medications to a more sustainable and healthier alternative “by educating others on alternative food and medication options that are available and help guide them down a more healthy and sustainable path that best fits their lifestyle.” The Jim Claxton Scholarship is maintained and awarded annually for the fall semester by the Turfgrass Producers of Maryland (TPM), formally the Maryland Turfgrass Association (MTA). It is open to any full time, Mid-Atlantic college student attending a Mid-Atlantic Institution for an Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree. The applicant must have earned a high school or college GPA of 2.5 or higher. Preference is given to students enrolled in a turfgrass related field including turfgrass production and turfgrass maintenance.
