From the TTA Presid ent

Jason Pooler

COME ON,

SPRING R

ain, rain, rain. With all the rain we got here in West Tennessee this February, I’m ready for spring to get here and get this year started. To those of you I have not yet had the honor to meet, I would like to introduce myself. I am co-owner and president of Tri-Turf Sod Farms, Inc., in Paris, TN, with my lovely wife Tina and my two sons Jacob (17) and Preston (13). I’m very lucky to have a family that is understanding and supportive of the long hours we turf people must put in. If you were not able to attend the 52nd Annual Conference and Tradeshow in January that was organized by the TTA board, the TTA education committee, and Executive Director Melissa Martin, you missed a good one. The classes were very informative, and the vendors put on a display of their products. Without you

and your support, we wouldn’t be growing like we are. Thank you to all. This year’s conference had record attendance. It’s great to continue to see our organization keep growing, so please spread the word and invite friends and colleagues to become members. I would like to recognize Theo Lankford for his leadership of the association over the past two years and his commitment since becoming a board member in 2011. Theo has brought many big ideas into play for our association, and I have big shoes to fill, but have learned a lot from him and our past presidents. Special thanks to outgoing board member Mickey Lovitt for his commitment and dedication to the association. I want to welcome to the board Ryan Story with Vanderbilt University, Bart Cash with Buy Sod, and Darren Seybold with the

University of Tennessee. Our board volunteers their time and effort to make our association better. I can’t say enough how much we appreciate their dedication to our association. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president for the next two years. I welcome any comments or suggestions to better our association. If you would like to contact me with ideas, please call my mobile at 731-336-8932 or contact Melissa Martin (our TTA executive director) at 615-928-7001. Let’s make 2018 a productive and profitable season for everybody in our industry. Happy Growing!!

Welcome to

Spring in the Southeast! T

hanks to Connor Schutzman, CSFM, for his leadership as president in 2017. We appreciate his service this year as past president. Even more gratitude goes to Thomas Trotter for his faithful leadership on the Tennessee Valley Sports Turf Managers Association (TVSTMA) board as he gives way to Connor. I am excited to announce that the February 7th meeting at Autozone Park, home of the Memphis Redbirds, went well. Thanks to Ben Young and Brian Bowe for hosting the 32 folks who attended. In addition, thanks to Dr. Chrissie Segers (UT Martin) and Mr. Michael Richards (MSU) for their presentations. The next event is the main event at

Ridley Park, Columbia, TN, on July 25th. The TVSTMA will host a field day with Byran Farris and the city of Columbia. This promises to be a day of fun, networking, and education, in addition to the products and equipment demonstrations our commercial partners will showcase all over Ridley Park. Please plan now to attend by emailing sectres@tvstma.org. Our autumn event will be hosted by Cameron Richards and the Tennessee Smokies in Kodak, TN, on November 7th. As you mark your calendars for these dates, please keep in mind why the TVSTMA exists. The TVSTMA chapter has been established as a vehicle for sports turf professionals to network

locally with their peers and to meet regularly for educational opportunities. The TVSTMA is affiliated with the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA). What Is the Purpose of the TVSTMA? • To serve the sports turf profession in southern Kentucky, Tennessee, and northern Alabama • To promote the art of managing the sports turf function • To encourage professional dialogue and development in sports turf management • To encourage and develop member ship in the TVSTMA and STMA I encourage each of us to think about what we have to offer the industry and make a commitment to serve. Sometimes serving simply means participating or being available. Other times it means proactively doing something like encouraging others to serve on the board, hosting an event, presenting a subject, or promoting the chapter. Please evaluate what you can do to serve the industry.

From the MTGCSA P resident

Brad Marcy

Looking Forward to a

Great Year As

another spring is upon us and some of us are still trying to wrap up pre-emergent applications, one can’t help but be optimistic about the upcoming season. The winter was tough, and hopefully we all made it through it unscathed. Just as we are looking forward to each of our own upcoming seasons, we as a board for the

10

MTGCSA are looking forward to a great lineup of events for this year. We are trying to implement some new ideas and are coming through on some ideas that were implemented last year. We are going to have our typical fourlocation educational sessions this year. First off, we will be visiting the Nashville Golf and Athletic Club in April. I really wanted us to get out there before they host the Nashville Golf Open this year, which has been moved up in the Web.com tour schedule to May 24th. I volunteered there last year for the event and had a wonderful time. Next, we will be going to the Westhaven Golf Club in May. Westhaven is a great course and a terrific location for an educational session. The last time we were there, the hospitality was great, and we know it will be just as good this time. Then we will be throwing a curve in the lineup by having a meeting at Ellington Agricultural Center, hosted by Dr. Alan Windham. This will include a lab tour, along with other educational components. Since we are not at a golf course for this event, we are planning a social event at a local eatery afterward. Lastly, we will finish up the educational sessions at Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club in November. This is always a great educational session. It might be the best food that we get at any of our events. The weather can be a little hit or miss for golf, but always a great course to get out and play if the sun is shining. Last year, we were keeping attendance at all events and kept score. The top 16 scoring individuals have been placed into

TENNESSEE TURFGRASS February/March 2018 Email TTA at: info@ttaonline.org

what we are calling The Participation Challenge Cup. This is a match play event that will take place at The Grove in April, and we will reveal the results at the first meeting. We plan on this being an annual event and hopefully a contagious one that West and East join in to make it statewide in the future. The social event is going to be at the Nashville Sounds Stadium, sponsored by Bill Blackburn with Smith Turf & Irrigation. It will be June 8th vs. Tacoma. This is always a great event, so come out and support the folks that are supporting us. In October, we are planning an equipment techs event. This is a new event for us, and I hope that everyone will send their technicians. Our equipment managers are valuable members of our teams, and we need to make sure that they are being given quality educational opportunities, just like we do for ourselves. We think this will be a wonderful educational opportunity. Lastly, we will have our annual Scholarship and Research Tournament. We have been working on this, and I believe that we are going to have a fantastic location. We are always trying to get some new faces to the meetings. If you know someone who has not been a member of the MTGCSA, then tell them to come to a meeting. We will be happy to spot you for the first meeting. I hope that everyone has a great golfing season.

Photo 1. Doveweed has grass-like leaves, but it is in the spiderwort family.

By Jeffrey Derr, PhD, and Adam Nichols, Virginia Tech, Hampton Roads Ag. Research and Extension Center, Virginia Beach

I

first started studying doveweed (Murdannia nudiflora) about ten years ago, when it began appearing at some of the container nurseries. This weed can then move into—and become a weed problem in—landscape beds through the planting of contaminated nursery plants. In cooperation with a fellow weed scientist at North Carolina State University, Dr. Joe Neal, I worked out control programs for this new weed in nursery production and in maintenance of landscape ornamentals. More recently, I have been receiving questions about controlling this weed in turf areas, prompting additional research by Adam and me at the research station. This is a weed that is spreading in the region.

Doveweed biology Although it resembles grasses, doveweed is a summer annual monocot weed in the spiderwort family (Commelinaceae), which includes other problem weeds, such as tropical spiderwort (Commelina benghalensis), Asiatic dayflower (Commelina communis), spreading dayflower (Commelina diffusa), and marsh dayflower (Murdannia keisak). Members of the spiderwort family are monocots, having one seed leaf (cotyledon) like grasses. Doveweed is native to India, infests crops in many countries, and has been considered one of the worst weeds of the Commelinaceae family worldwide.

Photo 2. Doveweed has small, purplish-white flowers.

Doveweed has become a common weed in southeastern United States nursery crops, cotton, soybeans, and turfgrass. It ranges from Texas to North Carolina, and it has since moved into the midsouth. It is common in wet areas, such as drainage ditches and low areas with standing water, but it also will grow in cultivated ground where doveweed forms dense mats that compete with crops. Doveweed is a difficult weed to control, as are other members of Commelinaceae,

doveweed and Asiatic dayflower to increase in density. Also, many preemergence herbicides will not control doveweed, allowing this weed to dominate treated areas. Consequently, in cropping systems, populations of doveweed and related species have increased. It is important to separate doveweed and other members of the Commelinaceae family from the grass family. Preemergence herbicides effective for the control of annual grasses, such as

such as Asiatic dayflower. One possible reason that doveweed and others members of the spiderwort family are increasing is that these species have a degree of tolerance to glyphosate (Roundup, others). However, they do not have unlimited tolerance to glyphosate, as higher rates will suppress or control them. And yet, the lower rates of glyphosate used in Roundup-Ready crops will not adequately control these weeds, while controlling other sensitive weed species, allowing

prodiamine (Barricade), pendimethalin (Pendulum), and oryzalin (Surflan), do not provide effective control of doveweed. Also, the postemergence grass herbicides used in ornamentals and in certain turfgrass, such as fluazifop (Fusilade/ Ornamec), sethoxydim (Segment), clethodim Envoy), and fenoxaprop (Acclaim Extra), do not control this weed. So, it is important to tell doveweed from grasses, such as crabgrass. Doveweed has thin, pointed leaves about 2" to 5" long and about 1/4" to 1/2" wide. Leaves clasp the stem with a sheath. Stems tend to grow close to the ground and root into the soil at the nodes. It has a small purplish-white flower with 3 petals and forms small capsules that contain the seed. Doveweed is strictly a weed of summer, as it does not tolerate cold weather. I cannot grow doveweed in my greenhouse over the winter, since we keep temperatures low to save money on fuel. Doveweed does not like 50°F! So, it germinates later in spring than crabgrass, and it tends to die off sooner in fall. Doveweed seeds lack

dormancy when produced, so seeds produced in early summer can germinate, leading to multiple generations per year.

Doveweed control in landscape beds I have found only three preemergence herbicides that control doveweed in ornamentals—metolachlor (Pennant Magnum), dimethenamid (FreeHand, Tower), and flumioxazin (BroadStar, SureGuard). The use of BroadStar, a granular formulation, is primarily effective in established woody landscape trees and shrubs. SureGuard is a sprayable formulation of flumioxazin and must be used as a directed spray around trees and shrubs, since it has significant postemergence activity. In fact, SureGuard will control small doveweed plants. In a range of bedding plants, groundcovers, and woody plants, FreeHand would be a good option for preemergence control. Early spring applications, though, may dissipate prior to the onset of peak doveweed germination in summer,

so repeat applications may be needed during the growing season. Alternately, sprayed applications of Pennant Magnum or Tower could be used in a range of nursery plants. But they should be applied as a directed spray. For postemergence control of doveweed, glufosinate (Finale) provides greater control than glyphosate (Roundup, etc.). SureGuard is an option around trees and shrubs if the doveweed plants are small. Nonselective contact herbicides, such as diquat (Reward), also would be an option for control. I do not know of a postemergence herbicide we could use over the top of ornamentals for controlling emerged doveweed, so directed applications will be needed.

Doveweed control in turfgrass Since doveweed can move into turf areas from infested ornamental beds or be brought in on sod, control measures are needed for cool- and warm-season turf-

grass. We have been evaluating turfgrass herbicides over the last few years for selective control of doveweed. Some of my colleagues have talked about using the three-way postemergence herbicides that contain 2,4-D, MCPP, dicamba, or related herbicides. Although we have seen injury to doveweed from these products, single applications have not provided acceptable control. For example, single applications of Triplet, 4-Speed XT, and Surge did not provide acceptable doveweed control in a 2016 trial (Table 1). The injury to Bermuda grass from 4-Speed XT most likely was due to the triclopyr component. Celsius caused 53% injury to doveweed at 25 days after treatment, but plants outgrew the injury over time. We did not see acceptable control with Change Up applied either alone or in combination with Manor (Table 2). Certainty, Celsius, and Avenue

South also did not provide acceptable control in that trial after one application. We tried some additional herbicides in a field and a container trial in 2017, in this case making two applications one month apart. Similar results were seen in both the field and container trials, with the container results listed in Tables 3 and 4. Treating doveweed in containers allowed us to easily record shoot weights. At 20 days after the first application, atrazine, Surge, Tribute Total, and Celsius were providing good control (Table 3). We used a higher rate of Surge in this trial compared to the 2016 study; this could explain the better results we saw in 2017. Also, we added a methylated seed oil to Surge in 2017, but did not in 2016; so that also could be a reason for the better control in 2017. After two applications, excellent doveweed control was seen with Tenacity, atrazine, Surge, and Tribute

Total (Table 4). Doveweed shoot fresh weight at 27 days after the second application confirmed our control ratings that were taken visually. Tenacity, atrazine, Surge, and Tribute Total all reduced doveweed shoot fresh weight by 99% to 100%. Pylex and Celsius also significantly reduced doveweed shoot weight, with fewer reductions seen with Revolver and Image. In cool-season turfgrass, two applications of Tenacity should be an effective treatment for doveweed control. In bermudagrass, Tribute Total applied twice would be a control option. Use of atrazine would probably be limited to St. Augustine. Repeat applications of Surge would be an option in both cooland warm-season turfgrass species. We plan to continue our work on doveweed to optimize the timing, rate, and surfactant addition needed for optimum doveweed control in turfgrass. T
