new year brings new challenges and new opportunities. As we enter the spring season, the very work we do reminds us of renewal and brighter days ahead. VNLA approaches these days optimistically as we celebrate overcoming the unprecedented challenges of 2020 with positive energy and outlook for 2021. We understand the important work all VNLA members do and we remain steadfast in collaboration with others to continue to enhance, promote and advocate for Virginia’s nursery and landscape professionals. Working with local, state and national colleagues to ensure our green industry businesses remained essential last year was successful. This year, it is our sincere hope to build on that momentum and continue to thrive. The VNLA Board of Directors and its Executive Committee serves to represent all VNLA members. If you have a question or idea, please reach out to any of us. As always, we work to identify and share information about opportunities for continuing education that can be applied to a Virginia Certified Horticulturist (VCH) credential. If you know of an upcoming educational opportunity, please share it with us so we can help promote it. We are proud to continue serving you,

VDACS UPDATE

Meet the Office of Pesticide Services (OPS)

The

Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Office of Pesticide Services (OPS) administers the Virginia Pesticide Control Act and Regulations Pursuant to the Act. In other words, we regulate pesticides and the people who use them. To ensure the proper use of pesticides, we certify pesticide applicators, license pesticide businesses, register pesticide products and conduct both routine inspections and complaint investigations. And while you should call OPS with any questions, the question really is, who in the office should I call? The key to finding the right person is to find the program area first, for example, Certification, Licensing, Registration & Training, and find the topic and OPS Staff person to call. To help answer that question and ADMINISTRATION

to get you to the right person the first time, contact information for OPS is provided below. Updated information is also available on our website. At various times throughout the year, we receive a high volume of calls. While we strive to answer every call, there are times when we are assisting another caller. The best thing to do is to leave a message with the right person! We will return your call as soon as possible. Email is encouraged as it allows staff the opportunity to research information and provide a response in writing. We will respond as soon as possible whether contacted by phone or email. If you are unsure who to contact, inquiries can be emailed to:

Finally, a couple of reminders: • Pesticide Business Licenses Expire March 31 – Your business license is valid for 1 year and expires on March 31 every year. While we do send all businesses a renewal notice as a courtesy, it is the businesses’ responsibility to maintain their pesticide business license. If a business applies a pesticide without a current pesticide business license, they are in violation of Virginia’s laws and regulations and subject to enforcement action. When in doubt, look at your license for the expiration date. • Check Certification Cards for Expiration Date, Category Recertification Date(s) and Correct Employer and Address – Your certificate is valid for 2 years and expires on June 30 of a given year. Renewing your certification is a TWO STEP PROCESS, requires recertification credits AND submission of a complete application and fee. While we do send all pesticide applicators a renewal notice as courtesy, it is the applicator’s responsibility to maintain your certification. If a pesticide applicator applies a pesticide without a current certification, they are in violation of Virginia’s laws and regulations and subject to enforcement action. As with a business license, when in doubt about when your certificate expires, look at your certificate.

INDUSTRY NEWS Wilkes Family Nursery is downsizing

• Recertification Opportunities – For a list of approved recertification courses visit www.vdacs.virginia.gov/pdf/recertcourses.pdf. • The Label is the Law – Read and follow the label. Enough said! • Unregistered Pesticides – The Virginia Pesticide Control Act requires that “…every pesticide manufactured, distributed, sold, offered for sale, used or offered for use…” be registered. Check your storage for unregistered pesticides. Pesticide registrations must be renewed annually. If you’re unsure whether a pesticide is currently registered visit: www.vdacs.virginia.gov/pesticideproduct-registration.shtml NOTE: Initial pesticide business licenses and certificates may have shorter durations depending on when they were issued during the licensing or certification cycle. Please refer to the license or certificate you received to verify the expiration date. Don’t forget, in addition to OPS Staff, there is a wealth of information on our website including a list of approved recertification courses, application forms, etc. Check us out at www.vdacs.virginia.gov/pesticides.shtml. •

INDUSTRY NEWS

SOUTHERN NURSERY ASSOCIATION TO CEASE OPERATION Atlanta, Ga., January 25, 2021 – Following the announcement of canceling The SNA Conference scheduled for February, the Southern Nursery Association (SNA) has announced that in a unanimous vote the board of directors has made the difficult decision to cease operation of the 121-yr. old organization. Since the conference is the main source of income and with declining membership, the board determined that the association cannot be sustained. Founded in 1899, the SNA, a non-profit 501 (c) 6 trade association representing the horticulture industry in the southeastern U.S., accomplished many achievements in fulfilling its mission “to unite and advance the horticulture industry through educational, research and marketing efforts.” The SNA produced one of the industry’s largest trade shows from 1950 – 2009, the SNA Research Conference from 1955 to 2020, and the SNA Plant Conference from 1991 to 2020. In addition, the association hosted a State Officer’s Conference to encourage the exchange of information and learn about various issues affecting the industry throughout the region. Through a collaborative effort with industry researchers, the SNA produced The Best Management Practices (BMP) Guide, designed to help growers identify and promote exceptional management practices, methods and procedures. The first publication was in 1996 (v 1.0) and updated in 2007 (v 2.0) and once again in 2013 (v 3.0). With more than 6,000 copies in use today, this ever-popular guide has been recognized as the undisputed benchmark for horticultural BMPs in the U.S. The SNA also published the Proceedings of the SNA Research Conference and featured more than 3,000 titles comprised of more than 12,500 pages on the SNA website. Hundreds of topics in thirteen categories were presented at the conference and the proceedings have been published online, in an easy-to-use format, as an industry service. This exhaustive library will be transferred to the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) website (www.hriresearch.org) or future reference. In an effort to preserve the 121-year legacy of the SNA, two existing Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) Funds (the SNA Fund and the SNA Golf Classic Fund) will be combined (totaling approximately $300,000) and renamed the Southern Nursery Association Legacy Fund. SNA members are encouraged

10 • VNLA News • Spring 2021

to continue to donate to this important fund (https:// secure.givelively.org/donate/horticultural-research-instituteendowment-fund-inc/sna-1899-campaign) that awards funding for horticultural research in the southeast region of the U.S. Past SNA Executive Vice Presidents Danny Summers (1989 – 2006) and Karen Summers (2012 – 2020) have volunteered to maintain the sna.org website to house SNA’s rich history, including but not limited to SNA past presidents from 1899 – 2020, SNA Awards program winners from 1956 – 2020, SNA Research Conference Proceedings from 1991 – 2020, past Bryson L. James Student Research Competition winners, and the Best Management Practices: Guide for Producing Nursery Crops. Additionally, an SNA Facebook page will be maintained to create a community for past SNA members, and for photos, memories and comments. Additional historical memorabilia will be deposited with the Atlanta History Center’s Cherokee Garden Library in the Southern Nursery Association Repository created in 1999 for SNA’s 100th anniversary. The collection contains hundreds of administrative records, meeting transcripts, seed catalogs, research proceedings, trade show programs, photos and more. The Sidney B. Meadows Scholarship Endowment Fund, created by SNA in 1989, will not be impacted by this move. The Fund is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 charitable corporation fully independent of the SNA and will continue its efforts to award academic scholarships to horticulture students throughout the southeastern U.S. To date, the fund has awarded more than $550,000 in scholarships. The fund balance currently stands at more than $900,000. For more information on the Sidney B. Meadows Scholarship Endowment Fund visit www.sbmsef.org. Although we are saddened that SNA will be closing its doors, SNA members can continue SNA’s mission to protect and advance our industry by becoming active members of their state horticulture association and AmericanHort, our industry’s national association. To assist in the effort of preserving the legacy of SNA, AmericanHort is offering an introductory membership to current SNA members through June 30, 2021. SNA members, who are not already AmericanHort members, can join at the Basic Level at a special rate of $189 for the first year. Details available at AmericanHort.org.

AmericanHort members receive the Impact Washington monthly e-newsletter; Connect digital and print newsletters; Industry Insider Reports; access to the Hort Knowledge Center featuring over 1,000 videos, webinars, articles, and employment development tools; access to the Member Resource Directory and MemberVoice – a tool to be heard on national legislation and regulations; access to webinars; event registration discounts and much more. The creation of an SNA member group, based on the level of interest, inside AmericanHort, will help retain the identity and community of SNA. Additionally, efforts to expand the Southern Nursery Association Legacy Fund within HRI will be paramount to preserve the 121-year history and carry forth the longtime mission of the association to further horticultural research. For more information and to take advantage of this special offer contact AmericanHort by email: hello@americanhort.org or phone: 614-487-1117. In the coming weeks, SNA will be exploring other avenues for AmericanHort to help preserve some of SNA’s programs such as the research conference, student competition, and the Best Management Practices Guide. Final details of the effort to preserve the legacy of SNA will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead. The Southern Nursery Association wishes to express gratitude to the members, exhibitors, attendees, researchers, students, and volunteers who have been a part of the SNA experience for so many years. It is difficult to estimate the size and scope of the SNA community over the decades. To all those who have been a part of the SNA effort, we salute you and thank you for your service. •

COVER STORY

Virginia Tech Hampton Roads Agricultural Research & Extension Center (AREC) Update

W

ell, what a year so far! Like everyone, we’ve had our challenges at the AREC due to the pandemic, but we’ve been able to keep calm and carry on; just in a different way. When you stop and think about it, isn’t that what we in the green industry do all the time? You could also look at it as improvise, adapt, overcome (think Clint Eastwood and the Marines in the movie Heartbreak Ridge), or if that doesn’t work for you, then what about adaptive management business models? Regardless, it’s what we do – new unique landscape to maintain, new design or build problem to solve, new crops to produce, pests to combat, work force shortage, supply and demand trends, regulations, and on and on. Every year, every season brings new challenges even in the world of academia. And while there may be moments of panic, overall we keep calm, network, learn, change, and move forward. So, here’s what’s going on at the AREC. As of October, our building is still closed to the public, with no firm re-opening date in sight. The essential personnel only order was lifted and all faculty, staff, and graduate students are back to work at the AREC though many still work partly from home. Masks, distancing, and sanitizing are in full use. A table to accept plant and pest samples and dispense soil test kits has been set up on the porch outside the back door. Faculty have increased their responses to requests for assistance by phone, e-mail, and through virtual meetings, while still making very limited site visits. Please contact us if you need us!

12 • VNLA News • Spring 2021

You may know that 10 of our 70 acres is open to the public through 28 different educational demonstration gardens. We are truly fortunate to benefit from our partnership with Virginia Cooperative Extension where over 100 Master Gardener volunteers work and teach in the gardens. When things shut down in March, most of our gardens went without love and care for almost 5 months. We are slowly but surely recovering. Volunteers were allowed to continue working in the Annual Trial Garden area because it had vegetables. Over 1,000 pounds of produce was harvested from that garden and donated to the local food bank this summer. Our gardens remained open to the public, and boy did people come and let us know how thankful they were. Visitors included walkers, bird watchers, photographers, dog walkers, graduation celebrations, family picnics, baby announcements, and at least one wedding.

Specific faculty and program updates include: • Jeffrey Derr (weed science) is investigating alternatives to glyphosate (Roundup & others), including organic control options. His team continues to evaluate controls for troublesome weeds in the green industry, including yellow nutsedge, kyllinga, bermudagrass, doveweed, Virginia buttonweed, dallisgrass, and others.

• Laurie Fox (urban stormwater & sustainable landscaping) and the Tidewater Arboretum team of volunteers received an $8,000 Virginia Trees for Clean Water grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry. New signage and more than 50 trees will be planted at the AREC this fall. The trees will be used for educational programs, to replace trees lost in recent storms, and to increase the property canopy coverage to reduce stormwater runoff.

COVER STORY • continued

• Pete Schultz (retired entomologist) is finishing up his research on the Asian Ambrosia Beetle; a significant borer pest of nursery tree stock.

• Alejandro Del Pozo-Valdivia (new entomologist) started work at the AREC on August 10th. He will be focusing on both biological and chemical controls of insect pests impacting the nursery, turfgrass, and landscape maintenance industries. Some upcoming research projects include: the use and placement of flowering insectary plants to attract naturally occurring beneficials, as well as releasing laboratory-reared predators to manage pests, providing population monitoring data (redheaded flea beetle & fall armyworm) to alert growers, and maximizing the use and timing of chemical control tactics to lower insect pest populations. He is very interested in talking with growers and other stakeholders to learn about pressing insect pest issues and research needs. If you are willing to participate as a collaborator on any of these research projects, or would like to learn more about the Entomology program at HRAREC, please send Alejandro an email at adelpozo@vt.edu.

• Chuan Hong (pathologist) continues to address recycled water quality, plant health risk and other related issues associated with recycling irrigation, while coordinating two national projects on boxwood blight. Both projects officially started September 1, 2020 and are aimed at better understanding the blight biology and developing innovative and sustainable solutions to this destructive disease that is affecting everyone on the horticultural chain from growers to consumers. • David Sample (stormwater engineer) continues to work on stormwater modeling, a project with the City of Fredericksburg, and is involved with the new stormwater practices being installed at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond. • Nursery specialist position – Jim Owen left this position back in January to accept a position with USDA in Wooster, OH. The nursery production position is the number one hiring priority at the AREC. The university is currently under a hiring freeze so it is unclear when campus administration will allow us to fill this important faculty position. •
