REFLECTIONS & GRATITUDE FROM LEAF BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Board Chair 2023 Dr. Eric “Big E“ Howard
Greetings, LEAF Members, Volunteers, and Staff, I want to express my gratitude for an organization that has profoundly touched my life. LEAF Global Arts is more than just an organization; LEAF is a beacon of culture, diversity, and creativity that enriches our community in countless ways. LEAF has become a source of inspiration and a platform for celebrating the beauty of our world's diverse cultures.
One of the reasons I am grateful for LEAF is the organization's unwavering commitment to fostering cultural understanding and appreciation LEAF brings people together through music, dance, and art in a world that sometimes seems divided by differences The festivals and events showcase the vibrant traditions of various cultures, reminding us that our differences make the world a truly remarkable place
LEAF Global Arts also plays a vital role in supporting artists and performers from around the globe By providing a platform for these talented individuals to share their artistry, LEAF helps them thrive and exposes our community to new perspectives and ideas This enriches our lives and broadens our horizons in ways we may not even realize
Moreover, LEAF actively engages in educational outreach programs It works with schools and community organizations to bring cultural education to our youth, teaching them about the beauty of diversity and the importance of cultural preservation These efforts plant seeds of acceptance in the minds of our future generations
In addition to LEAF's cultural contributions, LEAF also promotes social and environmental responsibility It advocates for sustainable practices and supports initiatives that benefit our planet LEAF's commitment to social and environmental causes aligns with our shared values of improving the world
We should all be grateful for LEAF because LEAF is a shining example of how the arts can bring people together, foster understanding, and create positive change in our community. REFLECTIONS ON CELEBRATING LEGENDS OF THE AMERICAS: FIRST NATIONS & INDIGENOUS
“We’ve been singing and dancing to help heal the world and that’s what it’s about. The love and community we’ve been experiencing here at LEAF is great - so many Friends & Families!”-Doc The Hawk, Taos Pueblo
Grandmother Spider, created by Wahnetah Toineeta, weaved her web of enchantment and magic at LEAF! We all felt it and needed this- there was a depth of spirit and connection with the land and each other that was wrapped in kindness. The artists who came from many First Nations were not only extraordinary Cultural Ambassadors, they came with a welcoming spirit amd graceful humble strength
Grateful for the journey of Legends of the Americas led by an extraordinary array of artists and cultural ambassadors. Cherokee Cultural Ambassador John John Gran, guided Artistic Curator Otto Vazquez and team through the year in so many supportive ways. This year of “Legends of The Americas” has taken us as an organization into unimagined conversations and new awakenings. This has been a catalyst to curiosity, learning, and deep appreciation of First Nations music and traditions that will continue to be part of our LEAF journey It is our hope whether you were at the Festival or following our work, that you have a new or renewed spark of curiosity and we all keep learning and reconnecting to the wisdom and beautiful traditions that shaped this place we call the Americas.
These extraordinary culture bearers have given us the gift of introducing us to their traditions and arts, blessing and connecting us deeper to the land at Lake Eden while expanding our understanding and curiosity of First Nations and Indigenous Their kind gentle strength and collaborative spirit is a model for the best of humanity. Gratitude to the NEA for leading the support of this project that changed lives and LEAF.

INSIGHTS FROM CFO: LEIGH MAHER | 20 YEARS OF SERVICE!
2023 marked the final year of reinvesting into the organization from the grants received during the pandemic to solidify the long-term health of LEAF Global Arts. The organization was able to fully fund 6 months of emergency reserves while also finding ways to make the savings work positively by establishing a Charles Schwabb investment account with those funds. LEAF was also able to clear out the backlog of customer credits from canceled events which represented the only significant liabilities on the accounts Unfortunately, there was a slight reduction in attendance for the signature events but new marketing strategies are being initiated to bolster revenues going forward The two annual events, LEAF Festival & LEAF Retreat, serve as the primary economic engines for the organization while also providing the largest showcase for the outreach activities being conducted year-round One of the organizational focuses over the next fiscal period is improving the balance between event revenue dependence and other funding sources such as the continued growth of our membership program, attendance increases at the LEAF Global Experience in Downtown Asheville, grants, etc., for long-term stability and health, ensuring LEAF will continue to perform its mission for many years to come.

See all sponsor partners: theLEAF org/partners
years of stretching, reimagining, and sustaining our vision has been possible due to the foundation that was built by our partners. We are dedicated to continuing to forge LEAF’s path forward.
LEAF extends deep gratitude for the generous support of businesses investing in our communities by supporting LEAF’s mission and work. Funding sponsor partners are essential, especially now that LEAF is engaging our community in our mission yearround. Since 2020, we have prioritized shifting from event-based relationships to annual partners This change in perspective disrupted traditional paths, so we are grateful for those who pivoted with us!
In 2023, grants continued to be a lifeline to our mission work. We are grateful to these organizations for their vital support in grants received in 2023: National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), City of Asheville, Buncombe County, Explore Asheville, NC Arts Council, Arts AVL, South Arts, Chorus America, Audrey Love Charitable Foundation, Beattie Foundation, and more. We feel grateful for every opportunity to collaborate and grow our mission as we look toward the future. Thank you for your vital support in LEAF’s mission work to cultivate curiosity, preserve cultures, and promote global understanding!

THE LEAF CULTURAL EXCHANGE FUND
Why? Over the years, cultural exchanges have been the GEMs of LEAF!
The International LEAF Cultural Exchange Fund is dedicated to first travel experiences for young LEAF artists (ages 10-30). Over the years, we have witnessed many “First Travels” beyond their home where these young people are representing their country and culture. These are life-transforming experiences for both the young artists and their audiences
Membership keeps all the International and Schools & Streets programming going year-round These treasured Cultural Exchanges have larger and always unexpected costs (visas, airfare, transport, lodging, and don’t forget food) In this new fund, LEAF not only remains dedicated to helping young artists achieve this dream, but we are now creating the resources to secure and expand the opportunities. Remember your first trips to faraway places? Now imagine being one of the first in your family to ever travel beyond your country and represent your country and culture. That is extraordinary!
Become part of a transformative gift that helps shape a kid’s life. Want to know more? International@theLEAF.org

Each studio offers the opportunity to explore the latest in music technology, equipment, and techniques while honoring the history and progression of music in their respective countries Youth first learn how to completely set up and identify the different features of production equipment, then take creative liberty to explore with beats from around the world and their original compositions, mixing their own songs. These studios serve as a resource for youths/teens sharing their personal stories and using music as a tool of self-expression.

Locals and visitors enjoy educational experiences, field trips, classes, and workshops rooted in music, art, community, and culture.
In the heart of Downtown Asheville, at the historic Club Del Cardo on The Block, we reflect back to the ribbon cutting by Board Chair "Mama" Deborah Bryant "This was my parents' place to come to dance and gather. Now we are back." -Mama Deborah. The pandemic shifted plans, yet that extraordinary moment and LEAF’s leap inspire us forward as we continue to build this experience.
Our lil LEAF Light ⭐ and dear friend Kynzi Cooper departed this world too soon in January 2023. Kynzi embodied a life of radiant love, singing her way through existence with a motto that resonates:
"Laugh, love, live, celebrate our differences.
Reach for the stars…"
Her light was undeniably big amd bright, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. At the age of 10, Kynzi lived a life brimming with joy—big, beautiful, and full of song. Her love for singing at LEAF was infectious, as she effortlessly brought smiles, hugs, love notes, and curiosity into LEAF Global. Kynzi's leadership, especially in encouraging other young talents to step into the world of singing and performing, was extraordinary. She taught others with LEAF as part of the Chorus America grant, and she shared her performance secret; If you are scared...PUT ON SUNGLASSES.
As we navigate the darkness of her departure, we find solace in walking Kynzi's path—embracing her warmth, her keen sense of when a hug was needed, and her enduring bright smile. She remains a guiding light, inspiring us forward through the melodies she left behind.
In our remembrance, we are both deeply saddened and infinitely grateful for having shared a part of Kynzi's life. Thank you, Kynzi, along with the unwavering dedication of your mother and sister, for the gift of this precious time together. Your brilliance will continue to shine, inspiring young hearts to find their voice, their song, their bright star.

**Resident Teaching Artists teach our local youth year-round in our schools & community!
“LEAF Schools & Streets is an organization that is part of the lifeblood of the Asheville community. The work we do with these programs, these centers, is as essential in our city. As teaching artists, we just don’t teach the arts, music or percussion etc. We become role models in a world lacking heavily of role models. We are big brothers & sisters, to little souls in need of someone to look up to. In my work, I have seen the seeds of my teachings stay with my students until adulthood. I always said art, music & dance can heal a community. But more importantly, it’s the heart of the teacher & mentor that truly saves lives & I am fortunate enough to work with a group of good hearts & we all work together to heal & inspire this community. So, to me, LEAF can be summed up in a word: vital!”
INSPIRING STUDENTS TO USE THEIR VOICE THROUGH SONGWRITING:
Through a grant with Chorus America, LEAF resident artist Melisa McKinney worked extensively with local school students to introduce them to local songwriters. With the goal of creating social change through positive youth development, this program has helped youths to understand the power of their voices. While inspiring an understanding of other cultures and encouraging curiosity for creative expression through songwriting, youths are empowered to use their voices to spread a message of empathy, understanding, and inclusion for all people Songwriters included Juan Holladay, Whitney Mongé, Coppa Stone, and others “What is really special to me about this program is that students begin to understand that their own community is rich with culture, and that music and arts are what gives our community its magic.” ~Melissa
McKinney"The kids really enjoyed it a lot! They looked forward to Melissa coming each week and were excited to share in learning! When musicians from the community came in, the students knew they were working with real-life famous musicians, but the students were treated like the rockstars themselves." - Teacher from WD Williams Elementary
2023 VISITING TEACHING ARTISTS: LEGENDS OF THE AMERICAS

"Buncombe County Schools and LEAF Global Arts have been working together for years and expanded their partnership in 2018 by committing to be Partners in Education through The Kennedy Center. Through this partnership LEAF Global Arts and Buncombe County Schools have been able to offer dozens of professional development workshops for BCS staff to learn to integrate the arts into their content area with a focus on global arts. We have been able to expose students to artists from different cultures and countries. Our students have had the opportunity to host these teaching artists in their schools, perform on stage with Grammy musicians, culture keepers, and internationally renowned artists at the LEAF Festival and in their schools. Finding a bridge to help students see the impact music, dance, and art has on a culture and on people not just in WNC, but globally, is an important element of the programming. Students are able to grow as musicians and artists, make connections between content areas, and see the beauty and dire importance that the arts have on humanity."

Easel Rider and ULEAF recognize the power of cultural arts as a vessel for community building by strengthening intergenerational and cross-cultural relationships, empowering individuals, and strengthening leadership from the local community outward In 2023, we had a blast doing weekly classes with the Christine W Avery Learning Center, holiday programs at the Grove Arcade and Lake Julian Festival of Lights, and various camps with our local community partners. It was great to train a few new Easel Rider community artists for LEAF Festival in October, and to add a visual arts exhibit in The Barn to feature student work and teaching artists Tarah Singh and Kelsey Long.
We're looking forward to all of our possibilities in 2024, and are so grateful for our amazing sponsors! A special thanks to Devil’s Food Beverage Company and The Mule for being a parking spot for the Easel Rider when it isn’t in motion!
Unfolding LEAF (ULEAF) fosters pathways of access, inclusivity, and community-building through collaborative events in neighborhoods, community centers, public parks, and even private functions. ULEAF kept unfolding in 2023 for communities all across Buncombe County and Black Mountain. We made lots of repairs and gave lots of love to the stage, unfolding for musicians and artists to showcase their talents for years to come We love to provide a place for people to perform that is affordable for all.

ALEN STONE | TUXTLA GUTIÉRREZ (CHIAPAS), MEXICO
Alen Stone is a Chiapas native with strong Mayan roots. His passion for creating art began 20 years ago with graffiti and Hip Hop culture. Alen wanted to represent his culture and heritage, so he fuses Mayan influences with his graffiti. Alen chose the jaguar as the centerpiece for it is the state symbol of Chiapas. The majestic creature inhabits the mountainous region in great numbers. The jaguar is a symbol of Mayan warriors and revered by many indigenous cultures throughout Mexico. The fans are folkloric symbols of Chiapas connected to the traditions of Alen’s people. This piece is a dedication to Mayan culture and the wonderful people and traditions of Chiapas.
WAHNETAH TOINEETA | CHEROKEE FIRST NATION
Embodying the spirit of the Fall LEAF is "Grandmother Spider," a magnificent hand-drawn piece by the gifted Cherokee artist Wahnetah Toineeta. Here's a little story to draw us into the fall web. Deeply intertwined with Cherokee creation myths, Grandmother Spider is considered to be the sacred bringer of stars and light into the universe. "This year, we aimed to exalt and pay homage to First Nations, Indigenous, and LatinX communities as we journeyed through the captivating theme of ‘Legends of The Americas’ embracing the depth and beauty of this exploration. At our Spring Retreat, we planted seeds of discovery and learning. Many of the spring artists such as Angela Gladue and John-John Grant of Cherokee returned for Fall festival with their awe-inspiring groups where they continued building relationships and celebrating the fullness of this exploration.” ~Otto
LEAF Retreat is pure magic—perfectly sized, perfect place! Retreat was a cherished pivot and discovery during Covid. With just 1,500 attendees, it embodies a small, rejuvenating, and enriching experience reminiscent of oldschool community gatherings. Gratitude permeated the retreat, starting with appreciation for the land and a traditional ceremony by Danza Azteca Chichimeca. We planted seeds of Legends of the Americas and celebrated the elements—earth, sky, water, and fire. The event fostered a sense of community and cultural exploration across generations. LEAF Retreat was a space for listening, learning, dancing, and dreaming together. It served as a platform for cross-pollinating ideas and igniting creative visions. The closing ceremony, featuring LEAF International Guatemala and Dance of Hope of Uganda, showcased the power of Cultural Exchange. Sixteen youths from each country, despite language differences, shared lodging, food, and music—an embodiment of the best of the world. These kids represent our future and their music is our heart. LEAF Retreat is an experience that encapsulates the essence of community, cultural exchange, and hope for a better world.
“I’ve been a lot of places. The depth and array of cultures and people at LEAF here is REAL and so GOOD.”
~Bill Summers, The Headhunters
We are grateful to Greg Lucas making LEAF a destination on The Headhunters on their epic 50th Anniversary Tour, and Greg & Annie’s Wedding Celebration “Greenie” Tour.

BURIAL FAMILY JAM | AUGUST 13
SUMMER 2023 FINALE’ AT BURIAL
It was a delight to step into Burial’s place and create a family day in new ways! The summer culmination celebration was dedicated to uplifting youths and showcasing the talent inspired by our LEAF Schools & Streets summer camps held at LEAF Global in Downtown Asheville. Under a gorgeous, cloudless sky, families and friends gathered at LEAF & Burial Beer’s “Family Jam” at the super funky South Slope We saw a lovely showcase of youth talent singing, playing instruments, dancing, and gymnastic level dynamics Good people bonded, bodies moved to the beat, we were charmed and awed by superb performances, amazing food and drinks were enjoyed, fun arts and crafts were explored, and great booths of fun-tastic goods were on display. Artists included the sparkling dancers of the Carolina Diva Diamondz, LEAF Talent Showcase led by Melissa McKinney, the B-boys and B-girls of Atlanta's Rockwell Dance Academy along with all star Grafitti artists and Fuego AVL Dance Crew. A super shoutout goes to the artists who graced our stage, DJ and lead tech Edwin Guerra, our awesome MCs, our resident teaching artists, volunteers, and the hardworking LEAF and Burial Staff. It was a lovely community gathering!

LEAF GLOBAL ARTS FESTIVAL
51ST | OCTOBER 19-22
LEGENDS OF THE AMERICAS
LEAF Fall Festival, hailed as “THE BEST LEAF EVER,” brought much-needed #LEAFLove. Historic Lake Eden welcomed global families, friends, and artists for a celebration of cultural connection through music, dance, immersive healing, and poetry experiences. LEAF encapsulates the essence of WNC and global cultures while creating a playful "Camp life" atmosphere. The multigenerational community, marked by kindness and cultural curiosity, encourages connecting to the BEST of oneself, others, and the world
“My favorite moments were a vibrant blend of sights and sounds, global rhythms, traditional regalia alongside whimsical costumes, and the passing on of dance moves from pros to young students. It was a parade of puppets, stilt walkers, and humanity at its very best.” -AM
“This festival is a testament to the passion, dedication, and teamwork of pure hearts. It transcends cultural boundaries, emphasizing the sharing of stories and fostering of connections, with countless smiles, shared laughter, and bonds formed. A heartfelt THANK YOU until the next one… - Otto Vazquez, Artistic Curator

LEAF Values Equity. Moving beyond being inviting and inclusive, we are creating an equitable organization where anyone can bring their culture and values and engage in truly mutual relationships. We create space and opportunities for various communities to express their VOICES in their ways. At LEAF, we seek to include people from a vast array of neighborhoods, including those not “seen,” and ensure that these communities are able to use their gifts and values in meaningful ways. Striving toward being equitable is a journey; one that we will continue to be aware of, openly learn about, and seek to understand. On this path, we seek the outcome where an organization is truly equitable and there can be transformation, with openness, of the organization, the work, and the communities. Different groups share power and shape the culture, leadership, and results.
LEAF Equity Guiding Principles
Eliminating inequities begins with us.
1. Treating everyone with dignity, respect, amd non-judgment.
2. All LEAF ambassadors (staff, board, teaching artists, team leaders, partners, etc.) are representative of the communities we serve across the organization.
3. LEAF examines systems within to ensure equitable learning and participation.
5.
4. Policies, procedures, and funding are aligned with LEAF’s core values & mission.
