Hello & Welcome!

French

Thank you for gathering here at beautiful Lake Eden for the 46th LEAF Festival which weaves together all of LEAF's cultural arts work locally & globally. It is my hope that we are cultivating cultural curiousity, kindness, and magical moments while Trailblazing new paths. Recently, I had the honor to be an Evergreen Hero by 3rd grader Fable who reminds us Why LEAF.... "I've been going to LEAF so long I don't remember my first LEAF. But I DO remember running around, looking at vendors, trying to find mothers day gifts, fairies giving magic life, and cuddling up in a tent, feeling cool, but warm. LEAF has spread wings to my life. LEAF is more than a festival. LEAF Schools & Street brings music and art all over our region and LEAF International is in several countries, connecting cultures & creating community through music and art. LEAF gave a small girl a big life. Thank you Jennifer, Thank you LEAF." – Fable Tomlinson

Love what we do? Consider supporting our year-round programs by becoming a LEAF Member. 100% of MemberSHIP supports LEAF Schools & Streets and LEAF International. Thank you for making this a weekend full of new connections, inspiring creations and joyful celebrations.

Activating cultural arts to create life-affirming, community building experiences - empowering our youth to become global citizens, leaders & agents of positive change.

“I like being able to come to a safe place like Burton Street to play & learn with my friends after school.” – Zion L., Burton Street Community Youth Musician

LEAF PROGRAMS SPARK CHANGE! Opening the door to the LEAF ONEmic Studio at Burton Street, your senses immediately heighten. Whether your gaze surveys the walls draped in the latest graffiti styles of the B-Street DJs, your fingers tap on the MIDI controllers to lay an electronic drum beat or your ears perk up to the rhythmic mixing of a turntable, the studio welcomes you to explore & engage. “Music helps us to truly live in harmony with ourselves,” Nex Millen, ONEmic Studio Manager explains. In addition to the mixed-media exploration at the ONEmic Studio, the Burton Street Recreation Center is home to African Drumming, Hip-Hop Dance, LEAF Instrument Petting Zoo and Easel Rider Mobile Art Lab residencies. Youth have the opportunity to present and teach others about their audio & visual art at LEAF Festival via the EMErgence Tent, check them out! LEAF is grateful & continually inspired by the community leaders that go above & beyond to make cultrual arts a staple of youth education. As James E. Lee, Director of Operations at Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Buncombe County puts it, "We can't change our kids, we have to change the way they're learning."

300+ YOUTH PERFORMING THIS WEEKEND!

Look for this symbol on the Performance Schedule!

WELCOME SPRING VISITING TEACHING ARTISTS!

Twice a year, LEAF invites performing artists from around the globe that are culturally-rooted enough to grace the Festival stage, and mission-oriented enough to lead a Visiting Teaching Artist residency with elementary, middle, and/or high school students in and around Buncombe County. It is an opportunity for youth to take the next step toward becoming global citizens and leaders - onstage and off-stage in their communities. LEAF SCHOOLS & STREETS + BUNCOMBE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SELECTED BY JOHN F. KENNEDY CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS AS A PARTNER IN EDUCATION

u t of 7?

“The arts engage the whole child in creative thinking, collaboration, cross-cultural understanding, and communication. It inspires and transforms students supporting them in becoming life-long learners as well as future citizens.”- Mario Rossero, Senior Vice President of Education at the Kennedy Center.

Buncombe County Schools (BCS) and LEAF Schools & Streets are among just seven teams nationwide selected to join the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Partners in Education, a program designed to assist arts organizations throughout the nation to develop or expand education partnerships with their local school systems. A primary focus is to provide sustainable and robust arts-based professional development for teachers. Teams receive national support from the Kennedy Center through access to Center resources and so much more! Want to learn more about the Partners in Education program? Visit kennedy-center.org/partners, and stay tuned for more from LEAF!

Empowering Culture Keepers, Cultivating Global Youth and Collaborating to Preserve Cultural Traditions in 10 Countries: Bequia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Mexico, New Orleans, Panama, Rwanda & Tanzania.

“The pride the youth express while performing is unquestionably the most touching and humbling part of the whole experience” – Ingville Ceide, Prosjekt Haiti Co-Founder & LEAF International Partner

TRAILBLAZE TO HAITI After overcoming an earthquake in 2010, the loss of a prominent student & friend in 2014, and the devastation of Hurricane Matthew in 2016, LEAF International Haiti is the true definition of TRAILBLAZERS. Despite challenging obstacles, this dynamic group of youth continues to fight for new pathways in educating & celebrating their culture. A real model of perseverance & resiliency! This festival, LEAF International Haiti will be introducing young students to the music and dance traditions of Africa and the Caribbean. By focusing on these rich cultural traditions that has influenced culture in US cities like New Orleans, students will learn about the great diversity of the arts – including Haitian drum and dance, a tradition deeply embedded in the cultural interplay between West African continuity, Caribbean rhythm, and acts of positive resistance.

Want a

deeper experience into the

power of HAITIAN CULTURE?

Dance to Haiti | June 29 – July 7 Visit Haiti with LEAF and be immersed in culture, connection, history, & magic. Culture Keepers & guests will teach, share, & create an extraordinary journey into Haitian culture & arts. Meet LEAF partners – Prosjekt Haiti & Boukman Eksperyman – who are always fun, phenomenal guests. This is a cultural expedition where you will participate in an intense art-focused summer camp while making life-long friends, through hands-on learning.

Merci

LEAF MEMBERS!

Seeing the kids on mandolins was really beautiful. Seeing you all and the passion that you work with made me see Guatemala in a different way. I've travelled all around the world and this was really special.

This year, MemberSHIP has helped to support:

– Tim Haider, LEAF International Cultural Expeditioner

COSTA RICA NOVEMBER 3-9, 2018 Join LEAF on an epic expedition to Costa Rica. Soak up the beaches & waterfalls but become much more than a tourist by traveling deep into the jungle to visit LEAF International program sites lead by indigenous communities.

GUATEMALA JANUARY 2019 Be more than just a tourist in Antigua! Dive deep into the community and visit LEAF International Guatemala music classes in action at the CEDIN school. Embrace the famous indigenous market in the highlands town of Chichicastenango and make a stop at the stunning Atitlan Lake & lakeside village of Panajachel.

LEAF International Costa Rica Culture Keeper Luis Salazar builds a spiritual medicinal school called Namasku, which means to learn traditional medicinal topics. Luis teaches youth & visitors about medicinal methods and natural living. The house is circular because according to Luis, “The energy is fluent when it’s in a circle.” Ji Tara Kri Deka is a book published by Culture keeper Alex Rodriguez. This book of stories & songs that teach the history of the Ngabe culture can be found in 5 different Ngabe Indian territories and 35 schools throughout southern Costa Rica and northern Panama.

LEAF International Ivory Coast Culture Keeper Dramane Dembele teaches youth ages 6-17 daily at the S.O.S. D’Abobo orphanage in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Dramane is utilizing other foundational resources as he continues to rebuild the Djembeso Cultural Center.

 As a business owner that has attended LEAF Festival for over a decade, and having developed an appreciation for LEAF Schools & Streets and LEAF International, I was looking for an avenue that deepened my involvement. Through Business Membership, I had the opportunity to make a larger contribution directly to these programs. If you're a business owner, know that you can make a meaningful impact by supporting LEAF's mission.  – Bill Butcher, Bank Earnings Alliance | Founding LEAF Business Member
