INTRODUCTION

The goal of the organisers prior to the first edition of “144 – A Matter of Honour” in July 2016 was clearly defined: Creating a unique and extraordinary golf event! The biggest golf tournament in Europe, consisting of 1,200 amateurs from all nations and all handicap classes, competing in their teams in the “Ryder Cup of Amateurs.” Similar to the Ryder Cup, the famous team competition between the USA and Europe in which there is no prize money, “144” is all about honour. The prizes, with a total value of 70,000 euros, are not intended to go to the winning teams themselves, but rather to promote the respective club’s internal student and youth teams. What an excellent idea to promote young talent!

An exciting, spectacular and unique idea became reality: Within 4 years, the event has grown to a number of over 1000 participants, which was fully booked in 15 minutes. Moreover, the media echo was also an impressive proof of the strong pull of the event concept. Participants and sponsors were both thrilled by the inspiring, emotional event. Since 2023, three tournaments will now be held annually, in Malmö (Sweden), Bad Griesbach (Germany) and in Carinthia at the Lake Wörthersee (Austria). And for 2024 another “144” is planned in Bogogno (Italy).

THE STORY LOCATIONS

With “144” one of the most extraordinary golf tournaments in Europe was launched after many years of planning. For the first time ever in the history of amateur golf in Europe, over 1,000 players from all nations and all handicap classes will compete in their teams at the “Ryder Cup of Amateurs. ”

Bad Griesbach is therefore the ideal venue for ”144”. In addition to the Beckenbauer Golf Course, where the Porsche European Open was held in 2015 and 2016, there are other top-class golf courses available: the Porsche Golf Course, the Allianz Golf Course Brunnwies an the Uttlau Golf Course. Three of them are designed by Bernhard Langer.

Kärtnen (Region of Carinthia) Lake Wörthersee

The beautiful region of Carinthia/Wörthersee, with the three golf courses KGC Dellach, Golfclub Wörthersee-Velden and MoosburgPörtschach, was the first abroad venue of the “144“ tournament in 2020.

The region is a perfect location with its touristic opportunities and breathtaking lakes. Here both golfers and leisure lovers get their money’s worth.

THE EVENT

Teams consisting of 8 players compete over 3 days in a kind of „Ryder Cup Matchplay“ mode. An unprecedented tournament organisation, spectacular golf supporting programs, a central event location and emotional party nights create a unique atmosphere – the golfer becomes part of a large golf event with a very personal charm.The target group is golfers between the ages 30 and 55 who are interested in sports, competition and fun. People who love this sport and will continue to invest a lot in it.

“144“ is the perfect combination of a charity event and a youth promotion program for golf.

Eight players start as a team and fight together to promote their own student/youth teams. Together with the Cleven Foundation and the “fit4future“ project, “144“ has set itself the taks of guiding students between the ages of 12 and 15 to golf.

Why “144“

“144“ is a combination of numbers you won‘t forget. “144“ stands for 144 golf holes per day that a team has to play. 18 holes x 8 Players = 144 golf holes

And the most important thing is that Euro 144,- is also the exact starting fee, which each participants has to pay.

A starting fee, which is far below the regular green-fee prices and yet includes a handful of extras such as food supplied throughout the courses, tee presents, starter “polo shirt“ etc.

However, this is only possible through the close cooperation with the Carinthia Tourism Board.

The Dunes Course

The 18-hole Dunes Course was designed by former US Masters Champion and Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer, in association with European Golf Design. Set in diverse topography with spectacular sea and river views, tall dunes divide some of the holes adjacent to the golden beach. Inspired by the character of the natural landscape, much of the contouring mirrors the rugged outlines of the distant mountains.

Close to the sea, there is a links-like feel, adding to its unique style and playability; further inland it reflects a more typical Greek landscape of olive and citrus groves. Several holes run along a small river that meanders through the site and there are large undulating greens, wide fairways and steep-faced pot bunkers.

The course is designed to provide an exciting challenge for all golfers, measuring from a little more than 5,000 metres from the front tees to almost 6,018 metres from the back tees with a par of 71.

It features a full-size driving range and a short-game practice area, an impressive clubhouse including Flame restaurant, a designated members’ lounge and an exclusive pro shop.

The Bay Course

The second signature course to open at Costa Navarino, The Bay Course plays to a par of 70 and is a little shorter than The Dunes Course at 5,422 metres from the back tees. Situated a few minutes’ drive away and offering an alternative set of challenges, the layout was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Jr. and places a slightly greater emphasis on strategic play and positional golf. The idyllic setting runs through foothills and right alongside the historic Bay of Navarino. Most tees offer breathtaking sea views and the course twists and turns through three (Seaside, Canyon and Grove) distinct natural landscapes, providing striking contrasts that create a dramatic and memorable round.

The earth-sheltered clubhouse at The Bay Course, opened in 2019, showcases a unique design and blending harmoniously into the natural landscape.

Covering more than 2,000sq.m. the clubhouse has a premium location, benefitting from spectacular views over the Bay of Navarino and the stunning Bay Course which meanders through the undulating and diverse landscape of the lush Messinia region.

International Olympic Academy Golf Course

Designed by two-time Masters champion and Ryder Cup legend Jose Maria Olazabal, launched in partnership with the International Olympic Academy and the Hellenic Olympic Committee, International Olympic Academy Golf Course plays around the western part of the Navarino Hills area and benefits from having over half its holes along the ridge of the hill overlooking the Bay of Navarino. The front and back nine are distinctly different in layout. The front nine circles the southern portion on softly undulated terrain and leads through old olive groves in typical Greek landscape, while the back nine plays along the edge of the cliff and provides spectacular sea views. The par-72 layout measures 6,351 metres and provides a good challenge for top players and regular golfers. Precision over length is rewarded on several holes and long-hitters, if too aggressive off the tee, will find themselves under pressure a few times.

The golf course plays very fair for mid to high handicappers, with multiple forward teeing options, roomy bail-out areas to play safely around hazards, and bunkers that, despite their formidable appearance and strategic placement, are not too deep. Wind can be quite a factor on the course.

The Hills Course

The Hills Course is located on the eastern side of the Navarino Hills property and is perhaps best described as a scenic golf journey through nature. The course fits seamlessly into the land and, along the way, passes old olive trees, ancient rock walls and stunning ravines that carve deep into the Kinigou Hills, also designed by twotime Masters champion and Ryder Cup legend Jose Maria Olazabal. The course has five tee boxes per hole, one less than on the IOAC, and measures 6,251 metres from the back tees. Undulation is more of a factor and the scenery is vastly different. Only once, on the fourth tee, can you catch a glimpse of the sea, but the visual sensation is still dramatic, with mountain tops, long valleys and stunning rock formations.

The 18 holes offer a good balance and variety, from doglegs to uphill and downhill holes, long par fives, short par fours and challenging par threes.

Additionally, myriad strategic options await you and provide a good test for creativity and course management. The Hills Course gives you a fair balance between risk and reward and bail-out situations and puts a premium on strategy and shotmaking over power.

Designed by the American Robert von Hagge, the Circolo Golf Bogogno stretches over two championship 18 hole, par 72 courses and combines technical features of a high standard with the breathtaking natural beauty of the place: 220 hectares of uncontaminated terrain that include woods, lakes and streams, a majestic view over Monte Rosa and a mild climate.
