As you likely know, the Diamond Honoree program honors student affairs colleagues and corporate partners that have distinguished themselves in our field through leadership, advocacy, or scholarship. Since its inception, we have recognized close to 400 Diamond Honorees. We gather tonight at this annual event to induct the seventeen members of the 2017 class. The ACPA Foundation exists to support the programs and services of our professional association, ACPA-College Student Educators International. The Foundation does this through the firm commitment of raising funds through a multitude of activities. These activities range from this annual Diamond Honoree campaign, the Speaker Showcase, the Heritage Society, and by fostering close corporate partnerships. Since 1999, hundreds of individuals and programs have been impacted by the generous contributions of people engaged in student affairs work. The ACPA Foundation continues to promote a “giving legacy� within our Association. This is a primary focus of our strategic plan, which was developed a year ago. By contributing to the ACPA Foundation, you join other ACPA members and corporate partners in providing critical funding that supports professional development and leadership programs that help educate our members. Paul Gordon Brown Dr. Paul Gordon Brown is an educator specializing in student learning and development’s intersection with technology, social media, and design. For more than 15 years, Paul has served in a diverse array of student affairs functional areas from entrylevel to senior-level administrative roles and as an instructor in the Boston College and Merrimack College Higher Education programs. Paul currently serves as the Director of Curriculum, Training, and Research for the higher education software company, Roompact, and conducts research on social media’s impact on college student development and identity. An experienced presenter, Paul has given over 50 refereed presentations at professional conferences. He holds a BA in Philosophy from the State University of New York College at Geneseo, an MS in College Student Personnel from Western Illinois University, and a PhD in Higher Education from Boston College. Paul serves on the Governing Board of ACPA—College Student Educators International and as a faculty member for the Residential Curriculum Institute. His latest book is a collaboration with Erik Qualman as a contributing author to “What Happens On Campus Stays on YouTube”–a work that educates college students about the new realities of living online lives.
Jayne Brownell Jayne Brownell joined Miami University in March 2014 as Vice President for Student Affairs. As vice president she leads campus efforts to promote students’ individual engagement and growth, as well as the development of a strong, inclusive community, within a safe learning and living environment. She is also an active participant in all aspects of institutionwide planning and policy development. Jayne has worked in a broad range of areas across student affairs, including academic advising, residential life, leadership development, orientation, student

activities and peer education. Prior to coming to Miami, she served as assistant vice president for student affairs at Hofstra University from 2006-2014. Jayne earned her undergraduate degree at Douglass College, Rutgers University, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in student affairs and higher education at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Anthony Doody Tony Doody has over 20 years of practical experience and oversight in senior leadership positions within Higher Education in the areas of Facilities Management, New Student Orientation, Parent and Family Programs, Leadership and Training, Marketing and Communications, Adult Learning, and Major Events and Programs. He currently serves as the Senior Director of Student Engagement on the five New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses of Rutgers University. Prior to that Tony was the Director of Student Life for the five New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses of Rutgers. Over the last four years, Tony has presented at over twenty universities and national conferences on topics of innovation, digital leadership, technology, and unconventional leadership and has appeared on Higher Ed Live and other online panels speaking on innovation in higher education. He is the recent Innovation chair for the ACPA 2014 conference and serves as co-chair of the ACPA Presidential Digital Task Force. Tony co-hosts a regular show on Higher Ed Live. Tony has also had over 20 years of international corporate training in the areas of executive coaching, leadership development, personality assessment, diversity, presentation skills, generational marketing, digital leadership, conflict resolution, and team cohesiveness.

John P. Dugan John P. Dugan currently serves as associate professor and chair for Higher Education programs and the Undergraduate Minor in Leadership Studies at Loyola University Chicago. Prior to his academic appointment, he worked in leadership education at the University of Maryland and University of Nevada Las Vegas. Two active research projects support John’s scholarly interests. The Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) is a quantitative, international research program examining the influences of higher education in shaping leadership development (www.leadershipstudy.net). The MSL has collected data at more than 300 universities in the United States, Canada, Jamaica, Australia, and Mexico with data representing over 500,000 respondents. The second project is a qualitative, longitudinal study employing both critical narrative and phenomenological methods to understand the influences of identity and power on leadership for social justice across a wide array of career sectors (e.g., medicine, education, non-profit, business). John is the author of 21 peerreviewed journal articles, 12 book chapters, and four books. He is the recipient of several awards including: Research Article of the Year, American Educational Research Association’s Queer Studies Special Interest Group; Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, School of Education, Loyola University Chicago; and Emerging Scholar Award, ACPA—College Student Educators International.
Jennifer Ferrell Jen Ferrell has worked at Keene State College in Keene, NH since 2005. Prior to her time at Keene State, Jen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a Master of Arts degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Jen began work at Keene State as the Coordinator of Student Activities in 2005, and transitioned

into the role of Director of Student Involvement in 2010, providing guidance and oversight for student organizations and activities, student leadership, fraternity/sorority life, community service, and is currently transitioning to oversee the entire Student Center facility and programs housed within its walls. During her time at Keene State, Jen has been a flexible leader and strong advocate for students and staff alike. Jen currently serves as the elected Assembly Coordinator for Coalitions, social identity-based groups for ACPA — College Student Educators International). Jen is a former chair of the ACPA Standing Committee for Women, now known as the Coalition for Women’s Identities, as well. Jen also frequently publishes and presents on topics related to thoughtful programming, connecting programs to social justice issues, and managing change. Jen works diligently to prepare students for graduate level academic work and the transition into professional life, through advising, graduate student practicum opportunities, and job opportunities for undergraduate students.
Deborah Garrett Dr. Deborah Garrett is a motivational, industrious, and dedicated leader committed to student success with a distinguished record of service in higher education. She currently is President of the Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). She also served CAS as Member-At-Large for Outreach on the Executive Committee and as Director to the Board of Directors representing the National Council on Student Development (NCSD), an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges. In addition, Deb served two separate terms as President of NCSD for 2001-2002 and 2005-2006. Other associations she served include ACPA, American Association of Community Colleges, Arizona Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Arizona Community College Administrators, National Association for Campus Activities, and National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. Deb currently serves as the Vice Chancellor for Student Services at Arkansas State University - Beebe, where she is the chief student

affairs officer (CSAO) at a four-campus comprehensive community college. She has been the chief student affairs officer at Ivy Tech College, McClennan Community College, Mohave Community College, and Kaskia College, where she also served as interim president. Through her campus and national service, Deb has provided exceptional leadership to support student learning and development.
Kathy Guthrie Dr. Kathy Guthrie is an Associate Professor of Higher Education, director of the Leadership Learning Research Center, and coordinator of the Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies at Florida State University. Her research focuses on the learning outcomes and environment of leadership and civic education, online teaching and learning, and professional development for student affairs professionals. Previously, Kathy was a passionate practitioner in her roles in student engagement, leadership, and volunteerism at North Central College, Illinois State University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Guthrie is recognized as a mentor, scholar, and association leader. She is the associate editor of the New Directions in Student Leadership series, editor of the Contemporary Perspectives in Leadership Learning book series, editorial board member for the Journal of Leadership Education and the Journal of College and Character, and frequent contributor to today’s most relevant scholarship. Kathy serves as the International Leadership Association’s (ILA) Chair for the Leadership Scholarship Member Interest Group and recently served on the Steering Team for the ACPA 2016 in Montreal Convention as Co-Chair of the 2016 Next Gen conference. She has been recognized by ACPA with the 2012 Emerging Scholar distinction.

Deborah H. Hamilton Deborah H. Hamilton, D.Ed., LICSW, is Visiting Assistant Professor at Salem State University. She worked at Penn State in Student Affairs for a number of years, first as the Conflict Management Specialist in the Center for Conflict Management, and then as Assistant Director of Judicial Affairs. She earned a D.Ed. in Counselor Education with an emphasis in multicultural counseling at Penn State. When she moved to New Hampshire, Dr. Hamilton earned an MSW at the University of New Hampshire and worked in several areas of student affairs at UNH while completing her degree. She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and has been in private practice for the last twelve years. Dr. Hamilton has been a member of ACPA since 1990. She has served as a member of the Standing Committee for Women Directorate, Education Chair of the Commission for Campus Judicial Affairs and Legal Issues, and was a member of planning committees for several national conventions. She has also served several terms as a Trustee Associate for the ACPA Foundation.
Luoluo Hong The eldest daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Luoluo (pronounced “lō-lō”) Hong is a passionate and energetic educator, leader and student advocate. Dr. Hong has held leadership positions on many campuses, and is a threetime Senior Student Affairs Officer, having served in the role at her current institution, San Francisco State University, and for University of Hawaii at Hilo and Arizona State University at West campus. She also contributed in a senior leadership capacity at University of Wisconsin-Madison and Shepherd University. Dr. Hong is a perfect balance of the scholar-practitioner, having served in a number of different faculty capacities in addition to her administrative roles. Luoluo was a tenure-track Associate Professor of Women’s Studies at ASU and was tenured as an Associate Professor in Public Health

Leadership & Education at UH Hilo. Currently, she also oversees her institution’s Title IX, Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation programs. Dr. Hong is a contributor to the national discourse on many issues, having published extensively and served as a presenter or keynote speaker at hundreds of conferences. Luoluo holds a BA in Psychology from Amherst College, a Master’s in Public Health from Yale University, and a PhD in Educational Leadership & Research from LSU in Baton Rouge.
Robert Bradley (Brad) Johnson Dr. Brad Johnson is the Clinical Assistant Professor of Higher Education, M.Ed. Programs Coordinator, and Director of Graduate Studies for the Higher Education program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In addition to teaching, Dr. Johnson coordinates recruitment for Master’s students and assists with coordinating an annual Careers in Student Affairs Conference. Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member, Dr. Johnson worked in residence life for over 20 years at Davidson College, Wake Forest University, and UNCG. In addition to his institutional service, Dr. Johnson has served several state and national organizations, including serving on the executive boards of the North Carolina Housing Officers’ Association and as a twotime president of the North Carolina College Personnel Association. In addition, he served on and chaired a committee on technology for ACPA. Dr. Johnson’s research interests are in the area of LGBT issues in student affairs and integrating theory-to-practice for future student affairs practitioners. He has published articles and chapters on gender-neutral housing, LGBT student suicide, and resident advisors in New Directions for Student Services and the Journal of College & University Student Housing, for which he has also served as an editorial board member.

Lisa Kelsay Dr. Lisa Kelsay has a successful career in higher education, serving in admissions, academic advising, and career services. She’s worked in and taught in the community college setting, most recently as the Assistant Dean of Liberal Arts/Director of Academic Arts at Moraine Valley Community College, for 10 years. Lisa has authored or co-authored five scholarly publications about community colleges. Lisa is dedicated to service to others, serving as a university outreach coordinator, a participant in the Chicago One Brick program, and as a member of Circle K International. Widely recognized for her work, Lisa has numerous accolades to her credit. Lisa has a true zest for life. She can be seen on the silver screen in nationally released movies, or in magazines as Brand Ambassador for Gildan Esprit de She. She involves friends and colleagues in her adventures, including for example, organizing a multi-night post conference Montreal experience culminating in a stay at an ice hotel! Lisa is a hard-working educator, mentor, and leader. She is genuinely caring, nurturing, and empowering, using her optimistic personality to foster development in those with whom she interacts. Lisa is makes the world a better place, simply because she is a part of it.
Amanda R. Knerr Amanda R. Knerr is the Executive Director, Residential Life and Housing at Indiana State University. Knerr is responsible for all aspects of the housing and residential life program. Prior to her current role, Amanda Knerr served as the Senior Associate Director of Residence Life at The Pennsylvania State University. While in this role Amanda was responsible for assisting with the supervision and administration of a comprehensive residence life program housing 14,000 students. Knerr also was responsible for the residence life programs at eight other residential Penn State campuses. This included system-wide responsibilities in the on-

campus student disciplinary process, professional development and training, and assessment planning and reporting. Knerr has been actively involved in ACPA for many years. She has served as a Chair of the Commission for Assessment and Evaluation, chaired the Residential Curriculum Institute for three years, and chaired a committee to develop an Association-wide assessment plan. Knerr has also served on the Institute on Sustainability Committee, was an invited faculty member in multiple years for both the Residential Curriculum Institute and the Student Affairs Assessment Institute. Knerr received her master’s degree from Ball State University and is a PhD candidate at The Pennsylvania State University.
Jason L. Meriwether Jason L. Meriwether is the Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs at Indiana University Southeast. He earned a Master of Arts Degree in Psychology from Fisk University, and recently earned a Ph.D. in educational administration with a specialization in higher education leadership from Indiana State University. In his role as Vice Chancellor, Dr. Meriwether is responsible for leading the Student Services Division, including Financial Aid, Admissions, Career Development, Athletics. Jason has presented at numerous national and regional conferences on topics such as legal issues & liability, retention & persistence, student retention, education & economics, assessment, strategic planning, professionalism & career trajectory, social media, and hazing. Jason served ACPA as a member of the Presidential Task Force on Digital Technology in Student Affairs and the Directorate for the Commission for Student Conduct and Legal Issues. In 2014, Jason was elected to the ACPA Governing Board as Director of External Relations. Jason believes that success in student affairs and enrollment management lies in the ability to adapt to new trends in technology and digital engagement, while staying committed to advocacy for learning through collaboration with faculty and academic leaders.

Amy L. Reynolds Amy L. Reynolds is an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling, School, and Educational Psychology at the University at Buffalo. She is also the Director of Training for the combined doctoral program in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology. Dr. Reynolds received her master’s in student personnel work and her doctorate in counseling psychology from Ohio State University and has been working in higher education as both a staff psychologist and professor for almost 30 years. Her work as a scholar, teacher, and consultant focuses on multicultural competence in counseling and student affairs as well as college mental health issues. She has published over 25 journal articles and book chapters and made over 40 presentations at regional or national conferences. She is one of the co-authors for Multicultural competence in student affairs and Creating multicultural change on campus and is the sole author of Helping college students: Developing essential skills for student affairs practice. Among her awards are: Fellow in the American Psychological Association (Division 17; Counseling Psychology), Outstanding Contribution to the Profession of Higher Education and Significant Research/Publication in Higher Education (CSPA of New York State), and Outstanding Contribution to Multicultural Education Award.
William Spelman Beginning his career in student affairs, Bill Spelman served as the Director of Campus Center and Student Activities at SUNY Alfred, 1967-1973. He was then recruited to develop and oversee the construction of Wilson Commons, the new Student Center at the University of Rochester. After serving 10 years as the Director, Bill was promoted to Associate Dean of Students, where he served six years. During his tenure in student affairs Bill also served in leadership positions for the Association of College Unions International, including a term

as President. In 1991 Bill founded The Spelman & Johnson Firm, a national executive search and consulting firm that focused on identifying and placing professionals for key administrative positions in higher education. Serving as President, the firm was among the first to develop a niche in student affairs. After 13 years he then founded William Spelman Executive Search and expanded the practice internationally and by developing depth and breadth in the range of clients served, as well as positions sought. In 2010 Bill received a Presidential Citation award from ACPA at its annual conference in Boston, which recognized his long term leadership, partnership and sponsorship of professional development programs for student affairs officers.
Case Willoughby Case Willoughby has been a change agent in student affairs organizations for over 20 years, believing that investing in people brings growth to the organization and success to its students. Currently serving as Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Butler County Community College, his prior positions include Director of Advising at Hunter College, Director of Academic Achievement at Hostos Community College, and Class Dean at Columbia University. Previously he consulted on the creation of Columbia’s student affairs division bringing it into alignment with student affairs research and best practices. The ACPA/NASPA Joint Task Force on Student Affairs Professional Competencies, the ACPA Senior Student Affairs Officer Advisory Board, and the Directorate of the ACPA Commission on Two Year Colleges are his most recent service roles. Additionally, Case has presented widely at national conferences and authored book reviews in leading journals. With an Ed.D. and M.A. in Higher Education from Columbia University, an M.A. in Hispanic Civilization from NYU, and a B.A. in Hispanic Studies from Connecticut College, Case’s formal schooling is over, but his education continues.

Eboni M. Zamani-Gallaher Eboni M. Zamani-Gallaher is an affiliate of the Office of Community College Leadership and Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Education Policy Organization Leadership at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Formerly she served as Professor and Coordinator of the Community College Leadership Program in the Department of Leadership and Counseling at Eastern Michigan University. She held prior appointments at West Virginia University, ACT Inc., and Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. She earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration with a specialization in Community College Leadership and Evaluation from the University of Illinois at Urbana– Champaign. Zamani-Gallaher’s teaching, research, and consulting activities largely include psychosocial adjustment and transition of marginalized collegians, transfer, access policies, and women in leadership. Her work includes co-editing Working with students in community colleges: Contemporary strategies for bridging theory, research, and practice and the ASHE Reader on Community Colleges, 4th edition. She has also authored various articles including, Tracing LGBTQ community college students’ experiences, and African American student affairs professionals in community college settings: A commentary for future research. Zamani-Gallaher previously served as president of the Council for the Study of Community Colleges and on the ACPA Commission for Two-year Colleges.

ACPA FOUNDATION Founded in 1994 during the presidency of Charles Schroeder, the purpose of the ACPA Educational Leadership Foundation (501c3 non-profit organization) is “to enhance the student affairs profession and to generate and disseminate knowledge of college students at all levels within higher education” (Article Three of the Articles of Incorporation). The organization is now known as the ACPA Foundation to more concisely communicate its role as the fundraising arm of ACPA - College Student Educators International.
The Diamond Honoree Program Established in 1999, the Dianmond Honoree Program is way for those that care about students – and the research, scholarship, and programs that promote student development and success to help advance our association’s efforts. Diamond Honorees are “Championed” by dedicated individuals who recognize their specific contributions and choose to raise funds in honor of each Diamond Honoree’s outstanding and sustained commitment to higher education through student affairs and student development. Those funds are then utilized to help sustain the ACPA Foundation in its support of the research, scholarship, and programs that advance our field as a whole.
