Conference Overview WHY ATTEND? Since 1992, we have hosted the National House Directors Conference. The conference helps house directors improve their skills and efficiency while becoming more aware of the value and importance of their roles. Because house directors provide a safe, constant, and stable home for students within an environment that supports both academic and experiential learning, parents, alumni, house corporations, and the university administration are reassured and student retention is increased. At the conference, housing professionals will learn to create appropriate and effective relationships with their many constituencies (students, parents, alumni, faculty, vendors, and house employees). The goal of the conference is to provide house directors with unique and comprehensive skills and knowledge that encourage teamwork, leadership, fraternal values, and effective use of resources while supporting the shared mission of fraternities/sororities and the university. Conference participants will develop skills in problem-solving, communication, resource allocation, and facility management and will leave the conference with a better understanding of issues and trends affecting higher education. Attendees will also connect to a network of colleagues who can be relied upon for support and assistance throughout the school year.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The conference provides the perfect professional development experience for house directors, potential house directors, house corporation officers, fraternity and sorority headquarters staff, campus professionals, and volunteers who work with fraternity and sorority housing management.
SCHOLARSHIPS We are pleased to continue to offer the S. Shelley Sutherland Scholarship. In honor of Shelley, a longtime leader in the fraternal community, these scholarships are specifically designed for those participating in the Fraternal Housing Conference. Conference Tours PRE-CONFERENCE TOUR Magnolia Plantation and Gardens | June 19 | $60 Join us for a beautiful tour of the Magnolia Plantations and Gardens! This excursion includes admission to the beautiful historic gardens, a narrated tram tour, and a walking tour of the plantation house. Founded in 1676, Magnolia Plantation operated as a rice plantation for almost two centuries. The gardens were expanded in the 1850s by Reverend John Drayton. He was the first to bring the romantic style of gardening to the plantation and laid the foundation for the gardens as they are today. Learn about the fascinating history of the Magnolia Plantation in its orientation theater, then be sure to check out the historic gardens, petting zoo, and the conservatory. We will also embark on a 45-minute narrated nature tram tour of the plantation. Guests will learn about the story of Magnolia Plantation while gaining exposure to the extensive flora and fauna of the wildlife refuge. Alligators, turtles, herons, egrets, and other native animals are often viewed in abundance! Enjoy a guided tour of the elegant Magnolia Plantation House. See the columned porch and extensive collection of Early American museum-quality antique furniture on the family plantation that dates back ten generations. You can also visit the lovely gift shop. End the experience with a delicious boxed lunch. Includes: Admission fee to historic gardens, conservatory, petting zoo, antebellum cabin, and the orientation theater; a narrated nature tram tour of the plantation; and a guided tour of the Magnolia Plantation House. Conference Registration Registration Information
The registration fee is $540 and includes all educational programs and materials, the AFLV House Director Manual for first-time attendees, the opening dinner, two lunches, and the closing breakfast. Also included is the tour of Charleston. Travel and hotel costs are not included in the registration fee; lodging reservations should be made directly with the hotel. Your guests are welcome. Their special conference rate is $290 and they can join you for all conference meal functions and the city tour. During the educational sessions, guests can spend time at the hotel. here are many amenities at the hotel and it is conveniently located near the scenic downtown Charleston Historic District. Guests will be provided with an information packet about transportation and activities to do in their free time. Guests are also welcome on the pre-conference and post-conference excursions at the same fee as conference participants.
First-Time Participants Orientation
First-timers are invited to attend an optional orientation session on Thursday, June 19, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. There is no charge to attend this session, but participants are asked to RSVP in advance for proper planning. More information is online: www.housedirectors.org.

AFLV allows substitutions of delegates; therefore, the general policy of AFLV is that there will be no refunds for registration fees or cancellation of unpaid registration fee related invoices. However, there may be times when extreme situations arise that are out of the control of the delegate(s) or schools. In those rare situations, the individual may request a refund or registration fee invoice waiver in writing. Requests for refund or waiver submitted after ten days from the conclusion of the conference will not be considered. Registrations after May 17 will be charged the late rate and are subject to space availability.

REGISTRATION DEADLINES To receive the Early rates, register by April 4, 2014. For the Regular rate, register between April 5 and May 16, 2014. Any registrations on or after May 17, 2014 will be charged the Late rate.
Hotel & Travel Information Travel into the Charleston International Airport (CHS). First--time attendees will begin sessions at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 19. All other attendees should arrive prior to sessions beginning at 4:00 p.m. To get to the Charleston Marriott from the airport, taxi stands are available outside baggage claim. The typical cost is $40-$50 one-way. Shared-ride shuttles are also available at a less expensive cost and can be found near the taxi stand. The conference will end Sunday, June 22, at 12:00 p.m. Departing flights should be booked after 3:00 p.m. that day for those not attending the Post-conference trip to the Bahamas. Post-conference trip attendees will return from the cruise to the port at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, June 27. A bus will then transport participants from the cruise to the airport. To allow for enough travel time, departing flights on Friday, June 27 should be booked after 1:00 p.m. The conference will be held at the Charleston Marriott, located just minutes away from the Charleston historic district and waterfront. Hotel room rates are $159 per night for a single or double occupancy room, which includes complimentary internet access.
