PASSIVE EDUCATION Types of Passive Education Passive programming can be beneficial as it supplements throughout the environment reminders and support of what you are ideally communicating in person. Passive education is more than bulletin boards. Here are other creative ways to reach members in your house community: • Cause a Stir: If members can take coffee to-go or use stir sticks, consider placing stickers on the coffee sleeves or small tags on the stir sticks. You can do this with reminders, an important fact, or just words of support and encouragement. • Placemats: Paper placemats can be printed very inexpensively. Just place your message on an 11x17 pieces of paper and distribute in place of placemats at a meal. Idea: For stress management, make your placemats with an adult coloring book print. Place markers and colored pencils at the table and help encourage a little decompression during the meal. • Stall Talk: Consider individual bathroom stalls and have a member assist in posting relevant information to the back of the bathroom stall doors. • Table Set Up: If you are able, have a table set up outside the door to your apartment. This can be used for ongoing arrangements of educational and social information. Consider having an ongoing game of scrabble or Apples to Apples going with house members as they pass by. • Consider your own environment: The options are endless based on your own house community.

Are adjustments needed? Consider in what ways you can work with the chef to share positive feedback or to consider other meal options. • Connect with your sophomore house members. Check in regarding how they are doing and progress they are making. See the information regarding the Sophomore Slump. • Maximize the beginning of the year and how open individuals are to new relationships and connecting. • • • • • • • • •

28

Fraternal House Directors Conference

THE SOPHOMORES Guide to the Sophomore Slump They are no longer excited first-year students but also are not called upon and looked up to as juniors and seniors. Often sophomores can be considered the forgotten class. There is much on the mind of a sophomore and many ways they are learning, growing, and coming into their own. You can be of help with this development as a House Director. Common questions and concerns of sophomores can be as follows: • Social Connections: Have I really found true friends? Whom can I count on? How am developing deeper relationships? Do I feel connected to campus? All of these are important questions. Your knowledge and experience with the house and campus can be invaluable to those who are figuring out their way. • Career Concerns: Choosing a major and pursuing a career path are becoming of greater importance. And for some, realizing that what their parents may have wanted them to pursue does not line up with their desires. Your wisdom and caring for the important questions on their minds can go a long way. • Future Goals: Ask about their future goals and plans. Even just talking it out can help lead to greater discernment and discovery.

In what ways can you utilize presence in those spaces to work toward your community goals?

Is there a process, procedure or policy that needs your TLC? This could be something you have seen that doesn’t seem to be working well or is clunky in practice.

February Goals House Director Focus Area Go back to your goals for the year. What will you focus on for this month?

February Action Items: • Make a list of who deserves recognition in the house. This could be due to making additional contributions, providing assistance, or otherwise creating a positive atmosphere. Determine a way you can lift up their good work. Examples could include a thank you note, special recognition at a house meeting, or letting the chapter president know. • Cold temperatures plus less excitement than the start of the fall term can make February particularly difficult. Consider what ways you can look out for the wellness and well-being of house members. • Identify if any steps needs to be taken to prepare the house facilities for spring break. • • • • • • • • • •

Fraternal House Directors Conference

May Goals House Director Focus Area Go back to your goals for the year. What will you focus on for this month?

May Action Items: • Enact end of year closing procedures as applicable. • Identify a plan for how to support members in moving out. Remember that for some this is their first time experiencing this. Consider use of bulletin boards and other spaces to provide reminders and assistance as members prepare to moveout. • Support final exams. Adjust bulletin board and passive education to reflect preparation for final exams and encouragement. • Determine any last steps you want to take to help end the year on a high note. • • • • • • • • • • •

END OF YEAR REFLECTION Consider the following questions: What are you particularly proud of that you accomplished this academic year?

What surprised you?

What did you not get a chance to accomplish? What got in the way? Assess if this is a goal you could continue for next year.

Did your vision for the house community become a reality?

What would you change or adjust going forward?
