National House Directors Conference

Long Beach, California June 21-24, 2012

Conference

Overview WHY ATTEND? Since 1992, we have hosted the National House Directors Conference. The conference helps house directors improve their skills and efficiency while becoming more aware of the value and importance of their roles. Because house directors provide a safe, constant, and stable home for students within an environment that supports both academic and experiential learning, parents, alumni, house corporations, and the university administration are reassured and student retention is increased. At the conference, house directors will learn to create appropriate and effective relationships with their many constituencies (students, parents, alumni, faculty, vendors, and house employees). The goal of the conference is to provide house directors with unique and comprehensive skills and knowledge that encourages teamwork, leadership, fraternal values, and effective use of resources while supporting the shared mission of fraternities/sororities and the university. Conference participants will develop skills in problem-solving, communication, resource allocation, and facility management and will leave the conference with a better understanding of issues and trends affecting higher education. Attendees will also connect to a network of colleagues who can be relied upon for support and assistance throughout the school year.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The conference provides the perfect professional development experience for house directors, potential house directors, house corporation officers, fraternity and sorority headquarters staff, and volunteers who work with house management.

Educational

Programming SCHEDULE SNAPSHOT

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

The opening session begins Thursday, June 21, at 2:00 p.m. Dinner will follow the afternoon educational sessions and the opening keynote speaker.

Dr. Scott Carter Parents are one of the most important players in a fraternity or sorority during their son’s or daughter’s undergraduate education. Consequently, house directors must understand what makes parents “tick.” Utilizing resources is a key component in an operation where resources are scarce. Conference participants will learn how to develop relationships and include parents as part of the team.

All of the educational programs on Thursday and Friday are specifically designed for house directors and house corporation officers. Friday morning sessions will give priority to risk management and legal issues. On Friday afternoon, participants and guests will enjoy lunch and a scenic tour of Long Beach. Saturday, participants are divided into two groups to experience a full day of programming designed for either house directors or house corporation officers. Saturday also includes our networking luncheon and time with our strategic partners who help make the conference possible. Sunday, all participants will be immersed in strategic planning and goal implementation to maximize the knowledge being taken home. The conference concludes with a final opportunity for networking at our closing brunch.

Caitlin Roberts, M.S. “Fraternal values” is a term tossed around by many people. But what exactly are these values? Fraternities and sororities are values-based organizations but rarely do we examine our own personal values. How do personal values mesh with the values of the fraternity or sorority we work with? This session will help participants identify their values and how to live those values every day. David Westol, J.D. Legal and risk management issues are especially applicable for house directors and house corporation officers. Westol will cover topics ranging from defining FERPA to hazing prevention to personnel management issues.
