Portal Design Overview As an exercise in large-scale web development, we worked as a “class development team� to design a communications portal for all design students at UNL. The primary goal for this site is to create a one stop source for (in the order of importance): jobs, internships, news, events, resources and ideally to foster a design community. A core concept we will be focusing on is UCD or user-centered design. User-centered design is a design philosophy that puts the user of a product, application or experience at the center of the design process. In UCD, a designer strives for a detailed understanding of the needs, wants and limitations of the people who will use the end product and then makes design choices that incorporate this understanding. UCD requires that designers not only analyze and foresee how users engage but also test their designs.

Initial Design Feedback Colleen gave some helpful feedback on these initial pages when we had a one-on-one critique in class. Here are some of the things she said I should work on: Home Page: Who is the large picture of? Make this more clear possibly by a more clear connection to the article below. Perhaps have a rotating image for the main large image? Add more categories to be displayed on the Home Page. Maybe less Jobs, more questions and other things. Jobs Page: New content-don’t use same jobs as home page. Show internships! More tips? Sub-navigation--how to get to tips page/other pages. More effective buttons.

Answers of 8-10 were classified as the student liking the idea or thinking it was a good idea.

Conclusion The feedback and surveys helped me see what students really want and I changed my design accordingly. I think the survery was very helpful and wish we would do more feedback in this manner! I learned though, that it isn’t too hard to make a survey and tabulate numerical data, then analyze it, and let it affect your design.
