the time he was quick to play down his role in the 2008 success, as he had only been in charge of the station for three months when it won. However, this year yet more improvements and a hard-working, dedicated team of staff has seen it retain the coveted NRA, and Pashley’s been in the chair throughout the year. Typically, he tries to play down his involvement in the achievement: “To win the award twice has been absolutely fantastic and I was so proud for the whole team when we won again. We have worked hard and built on the success of 12 months ago and we will carry on improving as much as we can.” Last year it was another ECML station manager - Phil Crow - who attracted the plaudits for securing two successive winning NRAs for Newcastle in the Large Station category in 2007 (RAIL 576) and Durham, which won Medium Station of the Year in 2008 (RAIL 603). However, friendly rivalry between the two men means that both are determined to walk away with more NRAs in the future: “We’ve spoken about it and we both want to win again - but a bit of healthy competition is good and we get on really well, so it’s all good-natured and friendly banter between us. I’m aiming for the treble here at Doncaster.” The standard of stations on the East Coast has always been high and such competition can only be good for the passengers using the line. Over the past 12 months a number of improvements have been carried out at Doncaster, with the station receiving a repaint and rebranding with new signs. The recent demise of ECML franchise holder National Express East Coast (NXEC) has seen the rebranded station lose the recently applied National Express logos, as the new East Coast name comes to the fore. Doncaster has a staff of 48 and Pashley is incredibly proud that the team works so well together and says there is little turnover. The staff haven’t all come from rail backgrounds and some of the more recent recruits are from different professions - although all have been selected for their experience in customer service. Staffing on the ECML was restructured in the spring, with the aim of making it more customer-focused. This has seen three duty station managers appointed, who work between Newark and Doncaster. These
