This was evidenced mostly on my blog. I thoroughly researched into my chosen briefs to help me develop a better understanding of what I was being asked to do. This was undertaken mostly in the form of researching online, looking into past and current examples of things such as book covers, packaging and also investigating themes and motifs that I was incorporating into my work.

Evidenced in sketchbook and on my blog in the form of roughs, mockups and developmental imagery. The process of using roughs has helped me to come up with more ideas and expand on the work that I was producing. Mock-ups have allowed me to visualize what the product/outcome would look like and allow me to see how everything fits together.

Evidenced on my blog and design boards. I feel that the standard of work I have produced for this brief has been of a high standard for the most part.

Submitting to briefs set outside of the course has helped me develop my presentation skills in terms of design boards and final illustrations.

Evidenced on my blog. I feel that organization and communication have been a key part of this module, especially in terms of the collaborative brief. Working with someone else has taught me how to manage my time more effectively around other people and in turn how to organize my time and workload around different briefs that run alongside each other.

At the start of this module, I had no experience of working to briefs that were set outside of the course and had no experience of submitting work to competitions. I was excited at the idea of being able to pick and choose my own briefs to work on for this module as it allowed me a bit of freedom to decide what kind of thing I would be working on. At the same time, having to complete an allocated amount of briefs, all with different submission dates, was quite overwhelming and I found myself struggling with time management at some points throughout the module. Apart from the struggle to manage different projects running alongside each other, I feel that this module has helped me become more capable of dissecting a brief and has helped me to further learn about working within certain constraints such as layout, size etc.

I feel that I’ve learnt a lot through this brief, not necessarily in terms of developing my illustration skills but more in how I respond and work around different briefs set by different people. I feel that I am now more confident in looking at a brief and dissecting it to make sure that I fully understand what is being asked of me.

I also feel that I’ve developed my collaborative skills massively during this module. Working with other people isn’t something that I’m used to or really that keen on but as it was mandatory to this module, I knew it was something that I’d have to come to terms with. Working with a Graphic Design student has helped me understand more about their practice and how this can work in conjunction with my own. I feel more confident in putting my ideas forward to people, and also more confident in just working with other people.

My communication skills have definitely developed because of this as I’ve had to work around and talk through disagreements and differences in opinion that my collaborative partner and me occasionally had. All in all we produced a good standard of work and I believe this was mostly down to good communication skills on both sides.

In terms of what went well, I feel that the fact that I managed to submit to all but one competition brief is an achievement in itself. I was really stressed with managing a lot of different deadlines at first but I feel that I managed my time quite well and in turn completed the work in time for the individual submissions. I feel that as much as Illustration Friday seemed like a waste of time at some points, it’s helped me become a bit more confident with digital processes and techniques, something that I had already highlighted that I wanted to improve on this year. Using Illustration Friday to practice digital skills meant that I was confident to use digital media to complete the OhhDeer greetings card brief. I feel that for me, this is one of my more successful outcomes. I am really happy with the image that I produced for this brief, although it was only a small one, I feel that it was executed to a professional standard and using media that I am still learning to use. I was also really happy with my outcome for the Penguin Design Awards. I enjoyed working around a piece of text and identifying themes and imagery that I could translate into illustrations for the cover. I used a range of print processes from 504 to help develop my imagery and then edited this on Photoshop to produce my final design.

In terms of what didn’t go well in this module, I don’t think there is too much that I’m unhappy with. I struggled with the collaborative aspect of this module, due to me not really working with someone on a project before.

Communication skills on both sides sometimes lacked and this meant that some weeks we struggled to meet up or that the brief we were working on sometimes took a back seat due to other commitments. I’m also disappointed that I didn’t submit to Batsford on time. This was due to the stress of other modules on top of this one, my own lack of organization and simply not realizing in time that the submission deadline had passed. To alter this, I will make sure that I effectively keep on top of different deadlines and submission

dates in the future.

I feel that something I will be able to apply to other modules and projects is definitely the communication skills I built on during the collaborative brief. I still think that I would personally prefer to work on briefs on my own, as then I only have to organize myself and my own time, but I can see how working collaboratively can improve and further my own practice and therefore it is not something I will shy away from as much in the future. Time management is usually a huge downfall for me, but I feel that on reflection, I managed this module quite well in comparison to previous modules. I didn’t end up submitting late or last minute to any of the briefs except for Batsford, so I feel that the organization skills I’ve picked up from this module, including keeping on track of blogging, using more to-do lists to track progress and just generally keeping track of time and the workload I have, will help me massively in the future when organizing my time.
