INTERACTIVE DESIGN Brief To design a productivity app - looking at existing apps in the market and seeing where loopholes exist and where there is a market for a new app that can tackle the challenges its predecessors did not resolve. Concept The colours were kept to red, purple and a natural beige colour. The icon design consisted of the notion of wrapping gifts, which was applied throughout the entire app design. Resolution The app is geared to people who have problems buying the right gifts for people and are time-poor, the app provides them with ideas and places to buy gifts in their locale.

FLASH WEBSITE 2012 Brief To design a flash website that would showcase our work and act as an introduction of ourselves to others. Concept I took a illustrative approach, giving the website a personal touch. The theme of “high tea was utilised throughout the pages in the links and different animations such as flying birds and blinking eyes were also used to show the technical skills of my flash knowledge. Resolution The website includes a loading page, home page, biography page, portfolio page (including my typography and design journals, illustration, web design and graphic design pages), contact page and extra links page.

PACKAGING DESIGN Brief To design tea or coffee packaging that uses Spicers paper and two printing embellishments. Concept I wanted to create a tea box that would have a different tea for different moods, so I chose a selection of classic and popular black teas - Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Russian Caravan and Chai. The colours chosen pertain to their essence and the patterns relate to themes and images associated with the tea’s origins. Tea can change your “state”, hence “state” tea for any mood. Resolution The four small cubed tea boxes are contained within a larger cubed tea box to keep them neat and preserved, printed on CORE Bleach Board in 325GSM. The tea bags are wrapped in individual envelopes adding extra protection.

Kenyan and Assam black tea, aromatic, strong, high tea, patriotic, British rich, robust.

PERSONAL WEBSITE 2011 Brief The aim of this project was to create a personal website that would contain a portfolio of our work to date, a biography and a case study of an example of one of our works. Concept After exploring many different ways of approaching this website, I settled upon a concept revolving around the ocean, moon phases, night time and mermaids. I wanted to create something that was different and visually interesting while maintaining all the necessary functionalities of a website. Resolution Upon completion of this project, I had overcome some challenges that came with the scripting side of creating a website and by teaching myself to try and fix the problem I became more patient and willing to see a problem through to the end instead of trying to avoid it.

INTEGRATED RESEARCH PROJECT Brief To create a campaign that responds to and promotes bringing the greenery back into the city of Adelaide, through collaboration with the 5000+ organisation. Concept My focus was on greening up Adelaide through green roofs placed on bus shelters and potentially on buses and coming up an advertising campaign that reflects this. Resolution My solution was applied to a website, identity, bus stop shelter posters and other posters to be placed around the city.

Different logo concepts for the “Choose Your Roots” green roofing Adelaide campaign.

Possible visualisation of the application of a green roof on a bus shelter.

INDEPENDENT PROJECT #2 Brief To design three covers for publications of Shakespeare’s plays, taking a play from each of the genres (history, tragedy and comedy). Concept I was inspired by flowy, bold lines for the illustrations, combined with heavy text and textured paper, reflecting both new and old approaches to Shakespeare. Each cover consists of one character that is central to the play. Resolution The three novels were mocked up with 70GSM bond paper for the text block with a title page for each book as the first page, wrapped with the cover which was printed on a textured 300GSM Canson paper.

MAGAZINE DESIGN Brief To design a magazine that reflects a magazine of your choosing. Concept I based my magazine layout on Frankie Magazine, which is my favourite magazine. I used my own text, illustrations and photography to make it feel personal and heart-felt. Resolution The magazine consists of a cover plus seven spreads consisting of various articles and images.

To create a publication house, designing their logo, a stationery package, nine book covers, chapter spreads, title pages and one index page. Concept The logo was made to look rustic, and aged like it had existed for a long time and had seen many different events. The browns and yellow were carried throughout the stationery, including a star constellation map which carried on the theme of travel and exploration. For each book cover, I chose particular imagery and themes from the text to create the cover images which carry a part of each illustration in each component of the book spreads. Resolution In my stationery package, I included a bookmark as this was appropriate for a publishing house. The book components consisted of nine covers, nine chapter spreads, three title spreads and three contents spreads (for each genre) and one index spread.

PERSONAL IDENTITY 2012 Brief To design an identity and application of this identity to stationery and promotional items. Concept I looked at my personality and things that represented me, especially in the form of specific traits that I wanted to portray my identity and the way I approach the design process. This was reflected in the hybrid animal, made up of a deer (swiftness), owl (intelligence), fox (cleverness) and rabbit (creativity). Resolution I created a basic stationery package including business card, envelope and letterhead, as well as a bookmark, CD case and label, stickers, poster, postcards and a deck of cards. Forms consisting of an invoice, client brief and time sheet were also designed.

PROFESSIONAL COMMISSION Brief To respond to a client brief set by lawyers Fishers Jeffries and design a Seasons Greetings card. Concept I wanted my approach to be as fully illustrative in approach as I could make it. I looked for inspiration locally through native flora and fauna, choosing the galah and rainbow lorikeet to represent the festive season, and a Christmas bell flower. Resolution The card would be specially treated with laser cutting or a die cut to bring out the shape of the bird’s flight. One side retained simplicity, allowing the other side to be bold and bright.

MAJOR PROJECT Brief To design an iPhone app, website and interactive poster that helps inform consumers about the presence of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in packaged food. Concept The logo was designed first, which would set the colour scheme and style of the app design. Blue and yellow represented the GM corn image well, and the typeface Nevis suited the unbiased, informative context of the logo. The colours were applied with grey shades in the final app design. Resolution The app is designed to be marketed to iPhone users and those who want to make conscious decisions about what food they choose to eat. Each design solution is linked.

TEN THINGS I’VE LEARNED ABOUT BEING A DESIGNER Brief To design promotional posters for designer Katherine Hall’s design forum at UniSA, with the title of “Ten Things I’ve Learned About Being a Designer”. Concept The focus of the designer as a multifaceted being is embodied through the notion of spectrums created through the set of ‘10’ numerals, splayed in such a way that they create the idea of building upon previous experiences and skills. Resolution The outcome consists of a series of posters at A0, A2 and A3 dimensions, plus an animated .GIF.

C

The era of this particular Monograph was the 1970s and the architecture style was Brutalism architecture, so attention was paid to these key themes and hence was adhered to by using filters over all the images to age them and provide a ‘retro’ feel, whilst choosing the cover typography to two typefaces, Microgramma and Eurostile, for their extensive use in publications of that time and their Brutalist feel. Resolution The final Monograph was printed and bound, with 20 copies for distribution.

POSTER FOR TOMORROW Brief To design a poster that represents “A Home for Everyone”, delving deeper into the concept of a home and considering the social, cultural and political factors affecting the core issue of ‘home’. Concept The “scraps” poster specifically targets the audience from a viewpoint of foot wastage, trying to position them to consider their lifestyle choices and the way they purchase and consume food each day, each week. The “Earn Your Dough” concept’s message

is intended to target the concept of promoting change within ingrained lifestyle habits relating to food wastage and consideration of those less fortunate. Resolution Two posters were designed and submitted to the competition, based on the same concept. Printed posters to the size 50 x 70 cm were used for presentation purposes.

ISTD “SOUND BITES” Brief To respond to the sound recordings of British accents an dialects from the British Library with a communicative design, with a key focus on typography. Concept The focus was centred around developing a ‘fun’ novelty guide for tourists and travellers to the British Isles, who speak English but may be unfamiliar with the colourful variety of English spoken in different regions of the country. Resolution The outcome resulted in a box containing both a map of the British Isles sectioning the dialect regions, with the itineraries located on the back of the map. Each itinerary focussed on each specific region chosen (Kent, Lancashire, Devon, Cornwall, Yorkshire and Norfolk). Each region is colour-coded and set in a different typeface to distinguish one from the other, and patterns were developed which related to the specific region focussed on. The main booklet containing a story developed from the sound recordings is folded up and attached to an envelope which is designed to resemble an airmail envelope, reflecting the ‘travel’ theme in the underlying concept.

EPIPEN INSTRUCTION DESIGN Brief To produce clear, concise and easy to follow visual instructional designs for the product designed to treat diabetic and hypoglycaemic patients. Concept Using simplified vector illustrations, I explored applying them in various formats to influence how different steps could be read and interpreted by the viewers, placing emphasis on specific actions. Resolution A series of different orientations and formats were submitted, giving the industrial designers a range of choices to apply to their individual product designs.

SHORTLISTED

LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION Brief

To develop a visually, conceptually captivating and thoroughly researched design which responds to the key theme of home grown in a three-dimensional table centrepiece format. Concept The final concept chosen for this project relates back to the theme of Home Grown through the papier-mâché eggs. A series of eggs at various sizes were developed, with a variety of levels of thickness in the layers of tissue paper applied. The ‘babushka’ doll concept was also incorporated, with smaller eggs placed inside the larger eggs, reflecting the concept of security—being enveloped in a warm, inviting space. The pattern used further reinforces the idea of growth and being wrapped in a safe environment Resolution The final solution was one of the designs chosen to be showcased in the Home Grown Ball on the 23rd of November, 2013 .

BEFANA ANIMATION Brief To illustrate screen captures based on the story of Befana, the Italian Christmas witch, which would become an animated short forming part of a TV Christmas special. for the ABC as part of an internship. Concept The animation briefly captures the story of the Befana witch - the four key frames illustrated were illustrated to match the voice-over explaining the story to the audience. Resolution The i initial keyframe sketches were presented for analysis before adapting these illustrations into the final vector frames that would be used in creating the final animation.

SHORTLISTED

PEACE POSTER Brief To design a visually exciting, well-thought through poster that reflects the values and legacy of the Graham F. Smith Peace Foundation. Concept I have focused on looking at the legacy of the Peace Foundation through it’s namesake, Graham F. Smith. The concept of my poster is centred around Graham’s quote, using multicoloured tessellation pattern as a representation of the “building blocks” of people that have contributed to the values and construction of the foundation through its lifetime. This pattern has been applied to my illustration of Graham as a reflection of his inspiration for his life and dreams - a visual depiction of his life’s work coming to fruition through the foundation. Resolution The final printed A2 poster was displayed among other posters in the Peace Foundation Exhibition which was held on May 2, 2014. The poster was also part of a silent auction on the launch night.

MAPS AND MEANINGS Brief To develop an invitation (both digital and physical), poster and dust-cover to promote the launch of Dr Julie Nichols’ thesis book, stemming from the aforementioned title. Concept The concept focussed on melding both medieval European and Southeast Asian cultures together in a traditional T-O map format, frequently used in Medieval cartography. The patterns used pertain to the different iconography and imagery used in each respective culture. I also drew inspiration from medieval illustrations and infused their stylised qualities into the design. The invitation utilised a variation on the Turkish map fold, a specific fold that creates an interesting pop-up effect when opened. This interlinked with the patterns and the lines marked on the invitation. Resolution The final deliverables were an A2 poster to be displayed at the exhibition, a digital and printed invitation and a book dust jacket.

DINI CLOTHING Brief The client wanted illustrations featuring her clothing , using hand-drawn illustrations and watercolour. The brief was open so I constructed my response according to this. Concept I referenced the designer’s style of clothing, which emanated a very boho, 90s grunge vibe that was carefree and comfortable. There were a lot of metallic textures and mix and match sets. I used natural elements such as crystals and mushrooms and incorporated them with my illustrations of the models wearing her clothing. Resolution This project resulted in a series of illustrations featuring the client’s logo, as header images. I provided a range of illustrations to promote her label’s upcoming website and blog.

POSTERS FOR SIGHT

SHORTLISTED

Brief To produce a poster that focuses on raising awareness for blindness and loss of vision caused by diabetes for the Poster For Sight competition, run by Sight For All. Concept Just a Spoonful of Sugar? uses the wholesome image of Mary Poppins linked with the famous line “just a spoonful of sugar”–however, her eyes are missing to connect the concept to blindness, while the spoon of sugar containing eyeballs links to diabetic-related vision loss. Don’t Cut Ties’ key message is “don’t cut ties with your eyes”, which is symbolised by the metaphor of the sugar sprinkled scissors, representing the mismanagement of blood sugar levels and poor diet; the frayed rope symbolises the slowly degrading vision loss. Resolution Both posters are targeting audiences with diabetes already and how they can prevent the development of diabetic retinopathy. The posters were produced as print-ready and are A3 sized.

CONCEPT CHOSEN

Brief To produce and identity and associated promotional material for a campaign that calls men to question their attitudes towards the subject of violence against women and profiles male champions who support raising community awareness about shifting blame from victims to perpertrators. Concept Turning Tables focusses on the concept of switching attitudes in order to change behaviours in the target demographic, as illustrated by the circle formation created by the joined hands–men helping other men to combat the issue. Alpha focusses on the key tagline ‘rise above the pack’ as a link between men and animal packs and their patterns, with the wolf’s face used as a role model and a leader

VISUAL ARTS CATALOGUE Brief To produce an exhibition catalogue for the Visual Arts graduates— including the cover and layout—to the theme and title Encounter that can also be used for marketing and advertising purposes. Concept My concept links the theme of metaorphosis and growth through use of hand-generated illustrations of flora and butterflies. The illustration also symbolises the diversity of the various skills of the graduates. To differentiate the three covers for the different degrees, I have zoomed up on the illustration, relating to grotwh of knowledge. Three separate covers were designed for DBVS (Book 1), DMAD/DGAD (Book 2) and DHVS (Book 3). Resolution

The final designs utilise a spot varnish in place of a printed image on the cover, creating a textured, subtle finish while the inside spreads mimic this effect through use of the textures set on a low opacity in the background. For the purposes of this spread, I have included my chosen final three covers to show.

One night, I dreamed about falling down from the sky into a very deep chasm. Then I woke up, «i i` Þ iÞià > ` vi Ì Ã iÌ } ÛiÀÞ ÃÌÀ> }i° Þ L `Þ Ü>à y>à } Ü Ì ÃÕ } Ì LiV>ÕÃi of something sticking to my skin. These things were like something metallic. I didn’t know what I had become but I didn’t care. I wanted it to last forever. I wanted someone to put their hand on my skin to feel the roughness, the contact, and the pain of the cut of my sharp scales.

The sublime beauty of the invisible, elementary particle world around us is awe-inspiring. Its perfect balance and sub-atomic scale makes it one of the most fascinating dimensions of the universe. In this photographic series I am exploring the beauty of the sub-atomic world, a world we interact with on a daily basis though it remains invisible to the naked eye. Taking inspiration from the classical physics work of Michael Faraday and the romantic ideas of the sublime, this series seeks to travel through the underlying beauty of our universe.

The story of four mates getting together to invent Hahn Superdry was encapsulate visually through use of the four sensory coaster placeholders, which alight when all four have drinks placed on them concurrently. Resolution The final prototype was printed on foamcore and laser cut to resemble a bar table (not to scale) and an accompanying animation was created to demonstrate the interactive function.
