ARTS Writing Poetry Workshop In this ongoing, upbeat workshop, you will receive feedback on your poems and learn to provide constructive criticism as part of a community of writers. You’ll develop a deeper appreciation of poetic elements through studying the work of accomplished poets. Playwriting I Theatre tells stories using actors with powerful objectives, living in specific moments in time. Explore the many ways playwrights create interesting truthful characters and dynamic stories using the language of the stage: words, movement, light, sound and silence. This interactive class includes both sit-down writing exercises, and up on your feet work, so please dress comfortably. Writing a Short Memoir Turn your life experiences—dramatic and everyday—into a powerful short memoir. If you’ve wanted to write about your life but don’t have time to tackle a book project, this class is for you! Tell the story of your life in bite-sized chunks. This class will lead you step-by-step through writing a short memoir piece: from selecting and reflecting on your experience, to writing and publishing your story. Creative Writing: Comedy Hone your funny bone in this class for writers of all levels to learn and practice the fundamentals of comedy writing. This course will cover the basics of writing humor for an array of genres, including short stories, plays, film and poems. Through close readings of influential and contemporary humorists, and plenty of in-class exercises, students will refine their comedic timing, plotting and style. Students will also be asked to share their work with the class. Bring us your wacky quarantine adventures, your absurdist slam-poetry, your political satire! Dazzling Drafts: Fiction Works in Progress Hone your story ideas and refine your writing skills in this handson class for fiction writers. Attendees will get support during the writing process and learn how to give and receive helpful feedback, plus have class time to work on specific problem areas. In-class assignments will help strengthen scenes and better develop characters, helping writers move forward on their draft. Class will also cover basic fiction techniques and rewriting/editing tips. Designed as an open forum to improve works-in-progress and ask questions about writing and publication. Write Your First Book

This course will help both beginning authors and those who need a nudge with a book underway. Rather than focus on how to write a specific genre (memoir, non-fiction or fiction), the course will include: how to know a good book idea when you meet one, deciding how to tell your story, plotting an arc, the importance of re-writing and weekly exercises to get you writing and keep writing. Also, insider information on both traditional publishing and self-publishing and how to get an agent (and if you need one) will be covered.
