Fáilte chuig an 11ú Féile Buanfhoghlama Chorcaí.

Welcome to the 11th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival

Cuireann an fhéile éagsúlacht mhór imeachtaí saor in aisce ar fáil ar fud na cathrach, ag cur béime ar na deiseanna go léir atá ann don fhoghlaim, is cuma cén aois tú . Is é mana an fhéile, agus tá muintir Chorcaí tar éis é a thógaint chun croí, ná Iniúchadh a dhéanamh, Páirt a ghlacadh agus Ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar - - agus ghlacann líon mór daoine páirt innti trí imeachtaí a eagrú agus freastal orthu . Is mian liom an inchur déanta ag gach duine aonair, gach grúpa agus gach eagraíocht dá rath a aithint. Agus is iad muintir Chorcaí atá freagrach as a rath. Chomh maith lena chomhpháirtíocht le Féile an Phobail i mBéal Feirste agus le Féile Buanfhoghlama Luimní , tá an fhéile ag síneadh amach ar fud an domhain. Le linn an deichiú fhéile anuraidh tugadh eolas dúinn ar EcCoWell - an smaoineamh ar chomhtháthú ar straitéisí na Cathrach Foghlama, Chathair Sláintiúil, Chathair “ghlas” agus Cathair na h-eacnamaíoch Inbhuanaithe chun treoirphlean a chothaíonn caighdeán beatha feabhsaithe dár bpobal a chruthú. Is faoi bogadh thar theorainneacha agus daoine a spreagadh chun obair ar fud earnálacha chun tairbhe gach duine é EcCoWell. Cosúil leis an fhéile, Is faoi chuimsiú é. I mí Mheán Fómhair, ar ócáid Suaitheanta an Tostal, chuir EcCoWell fáilte roimh os cionn 250 toscaire ó thar lear agus ar fud na hÉireann chun taithí a mhalartú agus foghlaim óna chéile. Thus Comhairlel Cathrach Chorcaí Fáiltiú Cathartha dhó chun seo a aithint. Táimid an- bhródúil as ár féile, atá ag ardú próifíl Chorcaí go h-idirnáisiúnta, agus é ag oibríu i dtreo bheith ina Chathair UNESCO Foghlama. Ní fhéadfadh an fhéile tarlú gan tacaíocht lucht eagraithe an ócáid agus na h-urraitheoirí flaithiúil. Go háirithe, tá iarracht mhór déanta ag oibrithe deonacha chun go n-eiróidh leis. Thar ceann mhuintir Chorcaí , ba mhaith liom aitheantas a thabhairt go foirmiúil ar a thréaniarrachtai thar na blianta.

The festival offers a huge variety of free events across the city, highlighting all the opportunities there are for learning, whatever your age. Its motto is Investigate, Participate, Celebrate – and the people of Cork have taken that to heart – participating in great numbers by organising events and attending them. I wish to acknowledge the contribution made by every single person, every group and every organisation to the festival’s success. It is the people of Cork who have made the Lifelong Learning Festival what is has become. As well as its partnership with Féile an Phobail in Belfast & with the Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival, the festival is reaching out across the world. During the tenth festival last year we were introduced to EcCoWell - the idea of integrating the strategies of the Learning City, with Healthy City, Green City, Economically Sustainable City to create a blueprint that fosters an improved quality of life for all our people. EcCoWell is about moving beyond boundaries and encouraging people to work across sectors for the betterment of all. Like the festival, it’s about inclusion. The EcCoWell Conference in September, a Flagship Gathering event, welcomed over 250 delegates from overseas & all over Ireland to exchange experiences and learn from each other. Its success was honoured by City Council with a Civic Reception. We are very proud of our festival, which is raising the profile of Cork internationally as it works towards becoming a UNESCO Learning City. The festival could not happen without the support of the event organisers and generous sponsors. In particular a huge effort is put in by volunteers to make the week a success. On behalf of the people of Cork, I wish to formally acknowledge their huge contribution year after year.

Comhairleoir Cáit Uí Fhlannachaidh Ardmhéara Chorcaí

Cllr Catherine Clancy Lord Mayor of Cork, Festival Patron

A Chairde,

A Chairde,

Fáilte romhaibh go léir chuig ár Féile Foghlama 2014.

Fáilte romhaibh go léir chuig ár Féile Foghlama 2014.

We are very proud in Cork to have a festival of lifelong learning, and we are delighted that the festival has been recognised over the past 12 months as a model of best practice internationally.

Táimid an- bhródúil i gCorcaigh féile Buan – fhoghlama a bheith againn, agus tá ríméad orainn go bhfuil an fhéile aitheanta thar na 12 mhí anuas mar mhúnla dea-chleachtais idirnáisiúnta.

This recognition is due to the combined efforts of all involved who have made the festival such a success, from humble beginnings to become an event that includes 500 events and involves as many as 10,000 people. The festival continues to grow, year after year, and this year is no different. I would encourage as many of you as possible, even those that are busy with organising their own events, to get out and participate in as many events as possible during the week. It is a unique opportunity to try something new, to meet others involved in learning, and to enjoy the experience. 2014 is a significant year as for the first time City of Cork VEC is replaced by Cork Education and Training Board, which was established in July 2013. Cork Education and Training Board now encompasses the former City of Cork VEC and the County Cork VEC, with the Training Division of the former FÁS, all under a new umbrella. It is an exciting time in education and training. As one of the ‘parents’ of the festival with Cork City Council, we are looking forward to the opportunities that this change will offer. I would like to acknowledge the ongoing commitment of all of the people that make the festival happen, our co-ordinator Tina Neylon, the steering committee chaired by Willie McAuliffe, the sponsors and partners of the festival - but most of all the people on the ground in the various organisations and communities of the city and surrounding areas. The festival is your festival and its success is your success. Comhghairdeachas arís.

Is mar gheall ar iarrachtaí comhcheangailte na daoine go léir atá páirteach ann an t-aitheantas seo, ótosach umhal go dtí an lá atá inniu ann le 500 imeachtaí agus 10,000 duine páirteach ann. Leanann an fhéile ag fás , bliain i ndiaidh bliana, agus tá an bhliain seo éagsúl fresin. Ba mhaith liom an méid díbh agus is féidir a speagadh, fiú sibh atá gnóthach le bhúr n-imeachtaí féin a eagrú, bheith rannpháirteach agus freastal ar an méid agus is feidir dos na h-imeachtai i rith na seachtaine. Is deis uathúil chun iarracht rud éigin nua a thriail, chun bualadh le daoine eile a bhfuil baint acu le foghlaim, agus taitneamh a bhaint as an taithí.. Is bliain shuntasach mar don chéad uair VEC Chathair Chorcaí in ionad Bord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Chorcaí agus , a bunaíodh i mí Iúil 2013 2014 . Bord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Chorcaí Cuimsíonn anois an iar VEC Chathair Chorcaí agus Coiste Gairmoideachais Chontae Chorcaí, leis an Rannóg Oiliúna an iar FÁS, ar fad faoi scáth báistí nua. Is tréimhse spreagúil in oideachas agus oiliúint. Mar cheann de na ‘tuismitheoirí ‘ na féile le Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí, táimid ag súil go mór leis na deiseanna go mbeidh an t-athrú a thairiscin. Ba mhaith liom aitheantas a thabhairt do thiomantas leanúnach gach ceann de na daoine a dhéanann an fhéile a tharlóidh , ár comhordaitheoir Tina Neylon , an coiste stiúrtha faoi chathaoirleacht Willie McAuliffe, na urraitheoirí agus comhpháirtithe na féile - ach an chuid is mó de na daoine ar an talamh sna eagraíochtaí agus pobail éagsúla na cathrach agus na ceantair máguaird. Is í an fhéile do fhéile agus is é a rath ar do rath. Comhghairdeachas Imeachtaí an Téarma.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CO-ORDINATOR The festival has established many crosssector links over the years so it was easy to bring representatives from Healthy Cities, Cork Environmental Forum, the Economic Development Unit at Cork City Council, and the education sector together to hear about EcCoWell from our Australian guest George Osborne two years ago. EcCoWell was developed by Peter Kearns of PASCAL International Exchanges (PIE), which emerged from work done on lifelong learning by the OECD - we’ve been a PIE member since 2011. EcCoWell is not about spending more money – it’s about being more efficient, by building on areas of common interest between sectors. EcCoWell is about integrating ecology, economy (Ec), community, culture (Co), well-being, lifelong learning (Well) to make life better for all. Last year Peter introduced EcCoWell to Cork during the festival at a seminar in Triskel Christchurch which lead up to one of Cork City’s Flagship Gathering events in September EcCoWell: Cities for the Future: learning from the global to the local.

Féile Buanfhoghlama Chorcaí

It was an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with over 250 people from overseas and from all over Ireland, north and south, and to learn from each other. We were thrilled when its success was honoured with a Civic Reception in December.

Find out more: EcCoWell Cork hosts an Open Networking Event from 10am on Wednesday – see separate entry. Look at www.eccowellcork. com hosted by Blacknight Solutions, festival sponsors.

But that’s not all – as a result of the success of the festival and our involvement with EcCoWell, we are flying the flag for Cork overseas. Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Lorraine Kingston, and myself were guests of UNESCO at its first International Conference on Learning Cities in Beijing, China last October. More than 550 delegates attended, representing 160 countries - we were the only Irish. With a delegate from Finland, I represented Europe on the Drafting Committee for the Beijing Declaration on Building Learning Cities, which was adopted at the conference’s conclusion. Councillor Kingston was invited to be vice-chair at the Closing Ceremony. Our festival & EcCoWell initiatives were also much admired at the PASCAL Cities Learning Together conference in Hong Kong in November which Denis Barrett, of Cork ETB & our organising committee, was invited to attend. The consensus there was the unique role played by the continued growth of the festival, with the resulting support across sectors and communities, leading to the development of a ‘culture of learning’ in Cork. Other cities are keen to learn from and collaborate with Cork – which can only by good for all of us. Cork now needs to build on this success by taking the next steps in the strategic development of this world class ‘city of learning’ identity. Tina Neylon Festival Co-ordinator

Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is pleased to support the 11th Cork Lifelong Festival. QQI very much welcomes the new national developments in Further Education and Training. In particular, the early establishment of the Cork Education and Training Board (CETB) from the former County Cork and City of Cork Vocational Education Committees and the former FÁS Training functions within Cork City and County. QQI looks forward to working with Cork ETB in these exciting developments in the area of further education and training. We also encourage the development of regional clusters of education which will see University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology work with the further education community in the county in ensuring enhanced

opportunities for lifelong learning. The QQI mission is to promote the enhancement of quality in Ireland’s further and higher education and training; to quality assure providers and to support and promote a qualifications system that benefits learners and other stakeholders. QQI is also charged with maintaining, developing and reviewing the National Framework of Qualifications which, since its establishment in 2003, has formed the basis of a more flexible and integrated system of qualifications with the national objective of moving towards a ‘lifelong learning society’, one in which learners will be enabled to progress their existing learning or take up new learning opportunities, at chosen stages throughout their lives.

NORTH // SOUTH In 2009 Cork’s Lifelong Learning Festival formally twinned with Féile an Phobail in Belfast. That relationship continues to flourish and it is gratifying to see it develop beyond the two festivals.

MURALS Since 2011 when the Mahon Men’s Art Group worked with four artists from Belfast on the mural in the car park next to Blackrock Castle, the mural project has continued. The Mahon group painted a mural just off the Falls Road in Belfast during Féile that year, which incorporates Cork’s coat of arms. Relationships established then continue and expand. On Horgan’s Quay a mural inspired by the Titanic was created in 2012 by young unemployed men from Mahon working with their counterparts from North Belfast, under the direction of professional Belfast mural artists, Frank Quigley & Michael Doherty. The young men from Mahon were subsequently invited to Belfast to work with unemployed young men on a community mural about the Titanic, their visit sponsored by Belfast City Council.

Féile Buanfhoghlama Chorcaí

During the festival this year mural artist Frank Quigley is in to Cork to oversee work on murals on the Mahon Peninsula Walkway by young unemployed men from Mahon CDP. Anyone interested in watching them work or who wants to learn about the project should contact Viv Sadd at Mahon CDP 435 9070 You can also visit the Mahon Men’s Art Group’s Studio on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday this week to meet them - see separate entries.

MARATHONS Gradually Cork’s City Marathon is creating links with its Belfast equivalent. HSE’s Health Action Zones on the northside of the city together with the Churchfield Trust worked together in 2013 to increase the participation by teams from Cork in Belfast City Marathon, where they were looked after by Féile an Phobail.

6

That welcome was reciprocated when Kevin Morrison, Youth Development Officer with Féile, brought two relay teams to Cork City Marathon last year. As Kevin says: “It’s all part of forging a partnership, which takes time to develop.”

CURRACHS & OCEAN TO CITY Kevin Morrison leads Boats Without Boundaries, a project at Féile which grew out of the currach building initiative begun three years ago when young people from Republican & Loyalist communities spent time in Cork with Meitheal Mara. They started on two currachs here, completed them in the North, and launched them during Féile that August. They brought those currachs back to Cork in 2012 & 2013 to take part in the Youth Event at the annual Ocean to City race. Through funding from the UK’s Heritage Lottery Fund for Boats Without Boundaries, they have built two Lough Neagh cots this year, which they launch in May. They’ll be competing again in Ocean to City. And they are planning a youth regatta in Belfast Docks in 2015 when the Tall Ships will be there. The relationship between Meitheal Mara, its Founding Manager Pádraig O Dúinnín & Féile continues. To learn more contact: Cathy Buchanan Meitheal Mara 431 6813 or Kevin Morrison, Féile an Phobail Youth Co-ordinator (South 028) (North 048) 903 13440 Pádraig O Dúinnín gives a talk about Meitheal Mara & Naomhóga Chorcaí on Thursday in An Spailpín Fánac at 7pm – see separate entry.

SCRIBES Cork now has its own Scribes, one of the most popular events during Féile an Phobail, It’s an event when writers read from and talk about their work in a relaxed, convivial setting. For the third time, Cork runs Scribes during the festival, bringing writers from different communities in the North together with local writers. Scribes takes place at An Spailpín Fánac on Friday at 7.30pm – see separate entry.

Cross-border & cross-community initiatives are supported by the festival, Féile an Phobail, Co-operation Ireland’s Cork branch & Cork City Council.

One Book, One Community is a Family Reading Project which encourages reading in DEIS schools in Cork. Now in its fifth year, it involves over 1,500 families, with parents reading the chosen book along with their children. Copies of the book are bought by the Home/School/Community Liaison Co-ordinators and distributed free to the children to take home to read with their families. Activities associated with the book are organised by the HSCL & teachers in the schools, and parents and others in the local community are encouraged to participate in them.

This year’s books are: in Knocknaheeny/Hollyhill/ Churchfield/Sunday’s Well – Now by Morris Gleitzman and The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler for preschoolers; in Farranree - The Ghost of Grania O’Malley by Michael Morpurgo. All welcome to a lecture, followed by a discussion with the future Initiative. The legacy of Pádraig Mac Piarais is hidden, he is portrayed as ‘God like’ - an idealist beyond reality - but he was a man whose ideas were grounded in practicality. He understood both the material needs of the nation & its spirituality. In his own words: “There is only one way to appease a ghost. You must do the thing it asks you. The ghosts of a nation sometimes ask very big things; and they must be appeased, whatever the cost.” In his lecture Diarmaid Ó Cadhla will be asking: Are we a people who remain haunted by ghosts? Tea/coffee provided.

THE FREE UNIVERSITY: ACE AT UCC PUBLIC LECTURE PROGRAMME 3pm – 4pm

SUSTAINABILITY & PROGRESS

Féile Buanfhoghlama Chorcaí

Dr Edmond Byrne, School of Engineering, & Dr Ger Mullally, Department of Sociology, UCC, explain contested views of Sustainability & Progress in a presentation entitled Building Adaptability, Resilience & Creativity into Complex Social Systems. Today the values of efficiency, control & growth have been central to a particular conception of progress, stemming from a reductionist & monist view. It sees the optimisation of social & technical systems as a result of a linear march towards perfection. An alternative view of system sustainability is as an evolutionary process amid ever changing flux. Using the example of controversies around energy infrastructure development in electricity in Ireland, their lecture considers how we might rethink sustainability & progress to address the increasing complexity & emergent challenges of the 21st century.

He asks who is being served by such growth: India has more billionaires than the UK & Japan combined; but is criticised by the UN for having some of the highest child malnourishment rates in the world. 5pm – 6pm

FROM SLAVERY TO PRESIDENCY: AMERICA’S BATTLE WITH RACISM Anthony Angelini of ACE explores issues of race through the prism of the anti-slavery movement in America in the 19th century. The Civil Rights movement of the 1960s & the election & re-election of Barack Obama will also be discussed. His illustrated lecture also looks at the social situation & the impact of literature, art & film in breaking down barriers between black & white. Lecture Series continues until Friday.
