Welcome to the 10th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival. Is cúis mór áthas dom an deis seo a bheith agam fáilte croíúil a chur romhaibh go léir anseo le haghaidh an “Cork Lifelong Learning Festival 2013”. Since it started 10 years ago, the festival has become part of the fabric of Cork, eagerly anticipated by many. It offers a huge variety of free events across the city, highlighting all the opportunities there are for learning, whatever your age and whatever your interest. Its motto is Investigate, Participate, Celebrate – and the people of Cork have taken that to heart – participating in great numbers by organising events and attending them. As well as its partnership with Féile an Phobail in Belfast, the festival is reaching out to cities across the world. In particular through representing Ireland on PASCAL International Exchanges (PIE) it is developing connections with other Learning Cities. The co-director of PIE, Peter Kearns, is a special guest at this year’s festival. He will be speaking at a Seminar in Triskel Christchurch on Wednesday, called Cities of the Future, where he will introduce the idea of integrating the strategies of the Learning City, with Healthy City, and Green City, to create a blueprint that fosters quality of life and wellbeing for people in the Cork region.

The festival could not happen without the support of the event organisers and sponsors. In particular a huge effort is put in by volunteers to make the week a success. On behalf of the people of Cork, I wish to formally acknowledge their huge contribution year after year.

When the festival began in 2004, our country was going through a period of economic success, but even then some communities were being left behind. Now education & training are more important than ever, in preparing our young people for the challenges they face & retraining those who sadly have lost their jobs. Our festival gives everyone involved in all forms of learning in the city the opportunity to celebrate and to showcase their activities, and to encourage others to participate. A couple of special events have been organised to mark the milestone the festival has reached: the Seminar on Cities of the Future, which the Lord Mayor mentions, and a Debate on Access to Education & Training in Changing Times. How education & training are delivered in Ireland is changing – one example is the VECs being replaced by Education & Training Boards. The Debate, which takes place in CityNorth College of Further Education in Knocknaheeny on Thursday afternoon, is an opportunity for you to hear about those changes. The event is about access – and is part of a national consultation which will feed into the next National Access Plan in 2104. Among the speakers is a guest from Scotland, Brian Lister OBE, to give us the benefit of his experience. The debate & seminar are just two among hundreds of free events for people of all ages to enjoy this week. I want to thank the organising committee and all the voluntary, community, state and private sector bodies who have contributed to the festival for the last ten years.

SEMINAR and DEBATE Since 2004 the festival has showcased and celebrated lifelong learning opportunities for all ages & abilities in Cork. Last year its organisers broadened its perspective by introducing an annual seminar, offering the public a forum where they can express their views & exchange ideas. This year, to mark the festival’s tenth anniversary, a Seminar and a Debate have been organised.

A message from the Co-ordinator - 10 years on The idea behind the festival is to celebrate learning and in so doing show others that education can be fun. For many, school was not an experience they remember with pleasure. By seeing others just like themselves having a good time while picking up a new skill they may be tempted to try. Attending a course could mean gaining a qualification or maybe not. Joining a class means mixing with others, with people who share an interest with you. It can be the start of something – a friendship, a journey into further education, even a new career.

From the beginning, the festival has been inclusive – welcoming everyone, whatever their ability or background. We haven’t confined ourselves to statutory organisations either – participants come from the voluntary, community & private sectors too. We’ve made a conscious effort to include the disabled, Travellers, older people, the ‘new Irish.’ We’ve built up a relationship with Féile an Phobail, and organised cross-border projects together. More recently we’ve been reaching out to other learning cities across the world.

One of the challenges faced when we started the festival was getting people to understand that it’s not about Adult Education – of course it’s included, but the event is about much more. It’s about changing attitudes towards learning, to getting people to understand that education is not something that only happens in schools and colleges – it starts when we’re born and goes on until we die.

We’re delighted that Limerick and Waterford have joined us in organising similar festivals.

Organising a festival about learning means that (almost) everything can be included. All that’s asked of organisations and individuals is that they run an event (or more) which welcomes the public & that admission is free; and there’s no fee to participate.

During the decade since 2004 Ireland has changed – then it was prosperous, with almost full employment, and the few emigrating by choice. But back then some sections of our society were left behind – many had dropped out of school early or left without qualifications. There was concern that they would not be equipped to face a downturn which, sadly, has proved to be true. During the boom there was work for them on construction sites or in service industries where poor literacy skills, for instance, would not matter. The festival does its best to target those areas of Cork with the greatest concentrations of people without qualifications, particularly through the Community Education Networks.

SEMINAR - CITIES OF THE FUTURE: the EcCoWell Approach The Seminar, on Wednesday morning at Triskel Christchurch, explores how EcCoWell can be applied to Cork. See separate entry for details. The Seminar is designed as a catalyst for ideas that will focus on an International Exchange in September, where cities around the globe will come to Cork to share good practice and learn from each other. Entitled Cities For the Future – Learning from Global to Local, it has been recognised as a Gathering Flagship Event for Cork City.

It will incorporate a conference, a marketplace for ideas, and site visits to the best of our own local initiatives. The Lifelong Learning Festival, working with our partners in HSE Healthy Cities; Strategic Planning and Economic Development, Cork City Council; and Cork Environmental Forum, will host the September event. We will be inviting representatives of cities including Learning Cities connected with Pascal International Exchanges, WHO Healthy Cities, Green Cities, and all our twinned cities and partner cities around the globe.

DEBATE: EDUCATION & TRAINING: IN THE MIDST OF CHANGE – WILL THERE BE EQUALITY OF ACCESS? The Debate, on Thursday afternoon at CityNorth College of Further Education/ Terence McSwiney Community College, Knocknaheeny, is partly about asking questions. Has access to education in Ireland benefited individuals, families and the communities they live in? Have we moved on in terms of improving access routes of entry? Have we increased the numbers of non-traditional learners at third level? Speakers include Dr Mary Liz Trant of the National Access Office of the Higher Education Authority, which is working on the next National Access Plan in 2014, so make sure that you come along and get involved. You’ll also hear from Professor Kathleen Lynch of UCD, known for her work on equality, particularly in education. The debate will also address key issues around the changes currently taking place in how education and training are delivered. Will those changes make access easier, more equal? You’ll

hear from Ted Owens, who is currently CEO of the City of Cork VEC, about some of those changes. To give the discussion an international dimension, guest speaker is Brian Lister from Scotland, who has years of experience in education & its management. NORT &SOUT MURALS

In May last two professional Belfast mural artists, Frank Quigley & Michael Doherty, travelled to Cork with four young unemployed men, drawn from across communities by the Tar Isteach Resource Centre in North Belfast. Here they worked with four young unemployed men from Mahon, identified by Mahon CDP. Together they created the mural inspired by the Titanic, which can now be seen on Horgan’s Quay. This January the young men from Mahon were invited to Belfast to work with unemployed young men on a community mural about the Titanic, their visit sponsored by Belfast City Council. The mural is launched on March 18 by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast. Mural artist Frank Quigley returns to Cork this year to oversee the creation of small scale murals on the Mahon Peninsula Walkway by some young unemployed men from Mahon CDP. Frank will train the young men so they can develop the project - teaching others to paint murals. SCRIBES Scribes has always been one of the most popular events during Féile an Phobail, when writers read from their work in a relaxed, convivial setting. Cork is copying it for the second time, when writers from different communities in the North – Tony Macaulay & Danny Morrison – are joined by Cónal Creedon & Jamie O’Connell. Scribes takes place at An Spailpín Fánac on Friday at 7.30pm – see separate entry.

DOCUMENTARY: TAPESTRY OF COLOURS

On May Bank Holiday 2012, for the second year, a Cork team drawn together by Bernard Twomey of the HSE’s Health Action Zone, participated in Belfast City Marathon. For the first time a team from Belfast took part in the Cork City Marathon on June Bank Holiday Monday – led by Kevin Morrison, Youth Development Worker with Féile an Phobail.

The Social Inclusion Unit at Cork City Council has organised the first screening in the Republic of a feature length documentary exploring the fusion of cultures in Northern Ireland. Its director Zhenia Mahdi-Nau will take part in a Q & A session afterwards. See Thursday 1.30pm for more details.

CURRACHS & OCEAN TO CITY

2012 to take part in the annual Ocean to City race, where one of the teams won the Youth Event! Pádraig Ó Duinnín & Meitheal Mara continue their association with Féile an Phobail. During Féile last August Pádraig gave a talk on traditional boat-building.

Kevin Morrison of Féile an Phobail is making progress with a Boatbuilding Project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It grew out of the currach building initiative we started two years ago when young people from Republican & Loyalist communities spent time in Cork with Meitheal Mara. They started to built two currachs here, completed them in the North, and launched them during Féile that August. They brought those currachs back to Cork in

Cross-border & cross-community initiatives are supported by the festival, Féile an Phobail, Co-operation Ireland’s Cork branch & Cork City Council.

One Book, One Community is a Family Reading Project which encourages reading in DEIS schools in Cork. Now in its fifth year, it involves over 1,500 families, with parents reading the chosen book along with their children. Copies of the book are bought by the Home/ School/Community Liaison Co-ordinators and distributed free to the children to take home to read with their families. Activities associated with the book are organised by the HSCL & teachers in the schools, and parents and others in the local community are encouraged to participate in them.

A BATTY WALK AROUND THE LOUGH The Cork branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust, with Cork City Council and the Cork County Bat Group, offers you a fascinating hour or so. The Honan Chapel at UCC was financed by butter merchants who drew on the Cork countryside to fund an Arts & Crafts revival in 1895, and is filled with riches designed and created by Irish artists and craftworkers. From the inspiring stained glass of Harry Clarke to the mosaics, the metalwork, stone & wood carving & even poetry, each contemporary textile artist has taken their personal inspiration to produce work. Lecture: Recovering a forgotten history of the Honan Chapel. In this illustrated lecture James GR Cronin, of the Centre for Adult Continuing Education at UCC, discusses how the identities of the artists who designed the mosaic floor and the Stations of the Cross in the Honan Chapel were recovered. The Honan Chapel, in the grounds of the university, was built at the zenith of the Irish Arts and Crafts. His talk will suggest reasons for excluding the artists from its official histories written in 1916 and again in 1966, and how recovering their identities was aided by social media in 2006. Seamus Hosey recently retired after almost 30 years as Producer in the Features and Arts Department of RTE Radio 1, where he produced programmes including The Arts Show, The Book on One, The Poetry Programme and Speaking Volumes. He also organised and produced the annual Francis MacManus Short Story Competition which continues to provide a major platform for new and emerging Irish writers. Arising out of his lifelong passion for the theatre, he has chronicled tours by the Abbey and Gate Theatres to Russia, Israel and Broadway in a series of acclaimed radio documentaries. He is a member of the Literary Advisory Committee for Listowel Writers Week.

Cónal Creedon is a short story writer, novelist, playwright, and documentary film-maker. His stage plays include The Trial Of Jesus, Glory Be To The Father, Second City Trilogy. Cónal has written over 60 hours of radio drama and his work has been broadcast on RTÉ, BBC Radio 4 & World Service, and by radio stations in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA. His books include Pancho and Lefty Ride Out, a collection of short stories, and Passion Play, a novel.

Danny Morrison is a writer who lives in West Belfast, and is secretary of the Bobby Sands Trust and chairperson of Féile an Phobail. He was the national director of publicity for Sinn Fein in the 1980s, served time as an IRA prisoner, and is a well-known political commentator in newspapers, and on television and radio. Since the mid 90s he has concentrated on writing & reviewing. Among his books are the novels West Belfast, On the Back of the Swallow, The Wrong Man; All the Dead Voices, a memoir, & Rebel Columns, a collection of articles. His fourth novel, Rudi: in the Shadow of Knulp, inspired by Hermann Hesse’s 1915 novel, has just been published.

Tony Macaulay grew up on the Shankill Road in Belfast at the start of ‘The Troubles’ – an experience which has shaped his life. He has spent 27 years working with hundreds of youth & community groups to build peace & reconciliation at home & abroad. His first book Paperboy is a touching, funny and nostalgic memoir, recounting his days growing up during the harrowing years. In the middle of the turmoil is the upstart with a wicked sense of humour and sky-high dreams, who dutifully goes about his paper round. The sequel to Paperboy is Breadboy – just published.

Jamie O’Connell was the 2011 Writer in Residence at Tigh Filí in Cork and was awarded an Artists Bursary by Cork City Council in 2012. His debut collection of short stories, Some Sort of Beauty, explores issues of faith, sexuality, travel and modern urban culture, through voices as diverse as that of a Jehovah’s Witness father coping with the death of his rebel daughter, the monologue of a woman who abandoned her young family, stark reflections on love and the quiet tragedy of everyday moments. Underlining these narratives is a powerful humanity guided by hope, forgiveness and the redemptive power of art. Jamie now lives in Dublin.w

Jim acts as tour guide on wildlife & cultural tours around Ireland, and gives lectures & workshops on Irish wildlife & the Antarctic. Come to a presentation and demonstration of Special Educational technology by John Phayer and Laura O’Rourke of CIT’s Disability Support Service. You’ll learn about the different types & how they can be used to support SEN students (including Dyslexia and Dyspraxia) with their literacy related difficulties in an educational environment. A selection of them will be demonstrated. John specialises in delivering ICT in SEN courses for primary and post-primary school teachers, and teaching students with Dyslexia how to operate different types of Special Ed technologies. Laura O’Rourke is the Disability Support Officer in CIT and works within the Access Service to increase the participation of students with disabilities & to support them while in Third Level.
