CASE STUDY

Major Retail Organisation Takes a Novel Approach to Build a Security Recruit-&Train Programme with NonSecurity IT Professionals An American multinational retail company, with over 300,000 employees, looking to overcome the major market gap of attracting skilled cyber security professionals

CHALLENGE: Like so many organisations trying to recruit skilled cyber security professionals, this major retail organisation investigated innovative ways on how to hire and retain talent in the challenging space. They undertook the novel approach to build talent (vs. buy it) by recruiting outside of the organisation that assessed well with technical aptitude but did not have formal cyber security work experience or training. They knew they needed to invest in a programmatic way to educate/train peripheral (non-security) talent to become security professionals -- a key driver in recruiting talent.

SOLUTION: This organisation originally thought they could handle their client’s need with on-demand training alone, and then engaged Learning Tree to develop a plan to complement their client’s on-demand approach. Learning Tree then helped them build a diverse and hybrid repeatable programme that consists of: •

Learning Tree Instructor-led training (Security, Windows, Linux, Networking) —75%

On-Demand training (Pluralsight & Learning Tree) —10%

Client’s own internal classes (Agile, Office, Teams, Client Culture) —5%

Cyber Security Coaching & Support/Coordinated Hackathon—10%

Utilised technical aptitude assessments with client’s internal vendor and then utilised Learning Tree technical assessments posttraining to confirm readiness.

It’s rewarding to be involved with this innovative training programme, I got consistent feedback from the cohort participants directly and in the chat pod as they engaged with me and their peers, such as ‘applying practical knowledge and anecdotes supports our learning and makes it more relatable and engaging’. They would also ask questions about something that would come up later that day, or the next day, or the next week, or a few courses into the future. That’s a great sign, them seeing the big picture and putting the current material into the right place. This is why guided learning has a higher success rate to meet the programme objectives.” - Bob Cromwell, Authorised Learning Tree Course Instructor on this Client Program
