LEGO® Education
Learn it provides a range of services based on LEGO Education Solutions. We are Ireland’s only authorised provider of LEGO Education, something which we are very proud of. As you might expect, LEGO Education are very protective of their brand. We have been working with them for the past two years to bring our LEGO Education classes/camps/workshops to Ireland. We have undergone weeks of training with LEGO Education. Members of our staff are qualified LEGO Education trainers and our owners, Ross & Pauline are soon to become Master Certified trainers, of which there are only a handful in the world.
LEGO has been around since the 1930’s and for the first 25 years it produced wooden toys. The first plastic LEGO brick was produced in 1958 and those bricks still connect with LEGO bricks made today… The name LEGO is formed from the Danish words “LEg GOdt”, which means to “play well”, in later years it was discover that “LEGO” in Latin means “I assemble” or “I put together” LEGO Education was founded in 1980 in response to demands from teachers and childcare practitioners looking to use LEGO products in an educational setting. Today LEGO Education supplies educational solutions for children aged 1 ½ to 16+ years and currently employs over 1000 people. LEGO Education’s mission is to “Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow”, with the range of LEGO Education Products that mission is in motion on a daily basis.
Our range of LEGO Education workshops for schools provide a great day for students that they will remember for years to come. Our workshops are educational, fun, promote teamwork and are full of exciting challenges.
Workshops We offer a range of in school Workshops. Our qualified staff will come to your school, lots of LEGO in hand, to run some fun packed workshops for your students.
Junior & Senior Infants Our Early Learning workshops are suitable for Junior and Senior Infants. School Start themes are based on LEGO Education kits using Duplo bricks. As children build and test their models, they explore the ways in which familiar objects work. They experiment with concepts such as force and motion, balance, stability and buoyancy.
3rd & 4th Class Our Machines &
Mechanisms workshops are suitable for 3rd and 4th Class. Our workshops help students deepen their understanding of how forces can affect motion and explore concepts of energy. Students build complex mechanisms and use them to make accurate observations, measurements and records; and even design their own solutions.
5th & 6th Class 1st & 2nd Class Our WeDo™ (Junior Robotics) workshops are suitable for 1st and 2nd Class. Our WeDo workshops enable students to learn, construct and use the motion and tilt sensors along with the drag and drop software to bring their models to life...
Our Mindstorms® workshops are suitable for 5th and 6th Class. With LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education students can build robots and use software to plan, test and modify sequences of instructions from a variety of real life robotic behaviours.
Planning your School Visit There are a number of ways we can organise a visit to your school. Every school is different and each of our Workshop packages can be tailored to meet your needs. We can run multiple workshops over the course of one or more days so that every class in the school get’s to participate or we can run longer sessions for 1 - 2 classes spanning over the course of a day.
Workshop Themes 2011/2012 Junior & Senior Infants:
1st & 2nd Class:
60 min - Early Machines & Mechanisms:
60 min - WeDo (Junior Robotics):
Spinning Top
Penalty Shoot out
Children build a spinning top and launcher and learn how gearing and balance will affect it’s motion.
Children build kickers & keepers and learn about sensors, motion, calculating distance, predictions and have a penalty competition.
Measuring Car Children build a push car and learn how to measure distances and see how gears works.
Spinning Top Children build a motorised spinning top, using sensor to control the motor and learn how gearing can increase and decrease speed.
The Alligator Children build a alligator, learn about gears and pulleys and how to use a motion sensor to automate the alligator.
3rd & 4th Class:
5th & 6th Class:
75 min - Machines & Mechanisms:
90 min - Mindstorms:
Trundle Wheel
Robotic Car Course Challenge
Children build a trundle wheel to measure distances, use the wheel to measure areas of surfaces, using fractions to calculate distances. Modify wheel to measure longer distances.
Children build a motorised car, they will learn about measuring rotations, finding circumferences and plotting. They will then program their car to complete one of our courses.
Land Yacht
Bumper Cars
Children build a land yacht and learn about how the surface area of the sails will effect how the yacht travels, children will calculate surface areas and work out the optimum area for the perfect sail.
Car Challenge Children build a measuring car, the challenge is to modify their car to travel the furthest distance. Children learn about weight and friction and its effect on vehicles.
Children will build a motorised car and design a bumper to mount to it. Using touch sensors they will program their car to react when it hits an object.
Workshop requirements In order to make our workshops run as smoothly as possible we do have a number of recommendations and requirements. Class Sizes: The ideal class size for each workshop is 20 children or less. While we can accommodate more, the students will get more from the workshops with classes of these sizes. Our maximum class size is 25 students, for lager classes we recommend splitting the class into two separate workshops or run longer workshops. Location: Ideally we will be located in one room for the duration of the workshops, children will come from their classes to us to partake in the workshops. This way we can set the room up for the duration of the workshops and save on time between workshops. Projectors/Whiteboards would be a bonus as we do have slide shows/demos we can show the students. We also require power points in each room as we will be using laptops for certain workshops.
Booking We can cater for all schools, we can run workshops for the whole school or specific classes. For further information on what we can do for you feel free to contact us at info@learnit.ie or by phone at 01 - 5240004.
