I recently caught an interview with Katy Perry where she was asked about her inspiration for writing her hit song “Firework.”

She said that she wanted everyone to know that each of us has a spark, and it’s up to us to turn it into fireworks.

This personally resonated with me, especially hearing it on a day when I felt fizzled out and a little sorry for myself. I immediately looked up the lyrics and felt so uplifted and reminded that… “You don’t have to feel like a waste of space…you’re original, cannot be replaced…”

Nesting Newbies is an original! Lea and I aren’t following any prescribed rules for publishing a magazine. For us, it’s not about telling others what to do and how they should live their lives— no—it’s about sharing a little bit of ourselves, as well as others’ creativity, in the hope that these will ignite your own inner sparks. Let’s all go forth and claim lives!

or their 1920s bungalow, Julie and Christian Sartwell wanted a kitchen that would be modern, but with a period feel. Because it was such a small space, they needed to use every inch wisely and were determined to make the home as eco-conscious as possible. The designers, Melissa Nierman and Gina Viscusi Elson, listened and helped make it happen. They opened up a kitchen nook, laundry room, and two small rooms to transform the space into a classic cottage kitchen.

“Some of my fondest childhood memories are being with my dad in the kitchen cooking our family’s version of Mexican food,” recounts Chef Lea (Gonzales) McIntosh. “I think everyone has some tasty traditions that get passed down from generation to generation. And many times they are adaptations of cultural recipes that over time become a unique part of a family’s heritage.” For Chef Lea, the Gonzales family enchiladas—which she calls “gringoladas”—and tacos are legendary!

Crispy Shredded Beef Tacos Serves: 3 to 4

Level:

TACOS: 1 (12-ounce) can roast beef with gravy preferred brand: Hereford or Libby's substitute: leftover roast beef

cups canola oil white corn tortillas

TOPPINGS: 1 pound Colby-Jack cheese, shredded Âź head iceberg lettuce, shredded 3 ripe medium tomatoes, cored and diced sour cream & taco sauce for garnish 1. In a large shallow saucepan, over medium heat, bring the canola oil to frying temperature (approximately 350 to 375 degrees).

2. Meanwhile, in a medium-size skillet, over mediumhigh heat, simmer roast beef while continuously stirring, until the meat is shredded and all liquid is completely evaporated, about 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

3. Spread tortillas out on flat surface. Spread 1 heaping tablespoon of cooked beef in a line down the center of each tortilla, across the grain.

4. One-by-one, lightly fold filled tortilla by bringing the top ends together. Hold top ends together with fingers or tongs and fry bottom end until firmly shaped, about 30 seconds. Gently set down into oil, and fry both sides until lightly golden and crisp. Remove from oil, lightly shake to allow excess oil to drain and place on a serving plate covered with paper towels. Serve warm with your favorite taco toppings.

Fry Note: Use a tortilla as an alternative for testing the oil temperature, by dipping the edge into the oil. If it bubbles and pops, then it is ready!

“Our family created these recipes in the ’60s when it was popular to serve frozen TV dinners and eat canned vegetables,” laughs Lea. “So today it may seem shocking, but we used canned Roast Beef with Gravy in our tacos.”

Gringoladas Serves: 4 to 6 1 1 1

pound ground beef teaspoon salt fresh ground pepper to taste (28-ounce) can red chile sauce, preferred brand: Las Palmas

pound Colby-Jack cheese, shredded white corn tortillas (2¼-ounce) can sliced black olives, drained cup green onions, sliced cup sour cream (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. In a medium-size skillet, over medium-high heat, thoroughly brown the ground beef about 10 to 12 minutes; season with salt and pepper to taste. Drain cooked beef to remove excess fat and place in a bowl. Add green onions and black olives to cooked beef; set aside.

3. In a large shallow saucepan, over medium heat, bring chile sauce to a slow simmer. One-by-one, dip each tortilla in the warm chile sauce to slightly soften and bring to 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture down the middle of each tortilla. Add about 2 tablespoons shredded cheese. Roll the filled tortilla up against the grain and place seam-side down.

4. Pour the remaining warm red chile sauce over top of gringoladas; cover with remaining shredded cheese.

Bake about about 15 to 20 minutes, or until cheese is melted and sauce bubbles. Serve warm with sour cream.

Las Palmas was originally created in 1922 by Rosa Ramirez, a housewife living in Ventura, California. Her sauces were so popular with her friends, family, and neighbors, that she was encouraged to grow beyond her own backyard and founded the Ramirez & Feraud Chili Company. Morphed into Las Palmas, the company has grown from those humble beginnings, and it now has the biggestselling Mexican cooking sauce in the U.S.!

“When it comes to dessert, everyone in my family begs my

my grandmother Suzanne’s famous cheesecake,” says Chef Lea McIntosh. “I really wanted to carry on this family tradition and was so happy to discover that it originated in an issue of Bon Appétit magazine!”

Lea’s grandmother clipped the recipe Cheese Cake Doucette by Chef Richard Doucette from an October 1974 Bon Appétit magazine…before Lea was born!

“Back then, there weren’t food processors, so she had to beat the ingredients for 20 minutes—imagine that!”

Fascinated by discovering Grandma’s recipe source, Lea dug a little deeper to learn its origin. “The magazine was doing a story on Vintage Inns of New England, including their histories and signature recipes. This cheesecake comes from the historic John Hancock Inn in New Hampshire (now known as The Hancock Inn). I was really excited because this inn dates back to the late 1700s, during President Washington’s first year in office.

Who knows, maybe George slept there?!”

those options are chocolate, graham cracker, or shortbread. “This cheesecake will be delicious no matter which crust you choose,” says Lea. “My grandmother Suzanne opted for the traditional graham cracker crust, of course, and my aunt suggests that a buttery shortbread cookie crust is the way to go. Me? A dark chocolate cookie crust is calling my name!”

Chef Lea wants you to have all three crust recipes, so you can try them all and see which one your family oohs and ahhs over the most!

CRUST: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a food processor with fitted grater attachment to make the perfect coarse cookie crumbs. Transfer crumbs to a medium-size bowl; add sugar, melted butter and use hands to thoroughly combine. Press moist crumb mixture evenly onto the bottom and sides of 9-inch springform pan, leaving about ½-inch space from top of pan. Bake crust in oven for 10 minutes. Let crust cool for 10 minutes before filling.

Serves: 8 to 10 Level: CHOCOLATE COOKIE CRUST 1 (9-ounce) box Famous® Chocolate Wafers 1/2 1/2

cup (1 stick) butter, melted cup granulated sugar

CREAM CHEESE FILLING 3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened, 4 1 1 1/2

cut into quarters - preferred brand: Philadelphia whole eggs cup granulated sugar teaspoons pure vanilla extract

SOUR CREAM TOPPING 1 2 1

pint sour cream - preferred brand: Knudsen tablespoons granulated sugar teaspoon pure vanilla extract

4. Place prepared crust on a foil covered sheet pan; bake in oven for 10 minutes. Let crust cool for 10 minutes before filling.

5. In a food processor with fitted blade attachment, mix cream cheese, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract; blend for 30 seconds, remove lid, scrape sides, then continue to blend until completely smooth, approximately 1½ to 2 minutes more.

6. Pour cream cheese filling into prepared crust; bake for approximately 1 hour, or until lightly golden, puffed, and center moves slightly. Remove from oven; set aside and immediately prepare sour cream topping.

2. Use a food processor with fitted grater attachment to make the perfect coarse crumbs. Transfer crumbs to a medium-size bowl; add sugar, melted butter and use hands to thoroughly combine.

7. In a small bowl, combine sour cream, sugar, vanilla extract; pour on top of baked cheesecake and use a spatula to lightly, evenly spread sour cream topping.

Return cheesecake pan to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from oven; transfer cheesecake pan onto a wire rack to completely cool.

3. Press moist crumb mixture evenly onto the bottom and sides of 9-inch springform pan, leaving about ½-inch clear space from top of pan to crust.

8. Refrigerate cheesecake for 24 hours to set. Note: Do not remove cheesecake from springform pan until ready to cut and serve.

The Philly Cheesesteak is one of the nation’s most iconic

(and delicious) sandwiches. And according to Bryan Mason, “If you’re Philadelphia born and bred, nothing says ‘home’ like a cheesesteak.”

“Bryan put me to the test,” says Chef Lea. “He’s a real Philly cheesesteak fanatic. And although I’ve never been to Philadelphia, I promised him that I could cook a cheesesteak that would make his heart sing and his stomach happy! He and I cooked together and made sandwiches to order for my crew after a long day of filming.”

With her ultra-thin sliced beef, authentic rolls, and correct technique for melting the cheese and mixing it with the meat…Bryan agreed that Lea’s cheesesteak could have come from one of his favorite Philadelphia hot spots. A native’s seal of approval!

Fortunately for the rest of us, we have Chef Lea McIntosh’s signature cheesesteak recipes.

Mix cheese into meat and peppers.

What’s up with the roll?

According to native Philadelphian Bryan Mason, authentic cheesesteaks start with Amoroso’s Hearth Baked Philly Rolls. “It’s really your first ingredient for making sure the sandwich you’re getting is the best,” he says. But it’s difficult to get your hands on Amoroso’s unless you are in Philadelphia, so Chef Lea found the perfect alternative.

“Just pop open a can of Pillsbury Crusty French Loaf, and you’ll have fresh-out-of-theoven rolls that are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside…the perfect combo for a cheesesteak.”

Who put the HOT in Lea’s Buffalo Blue Philly?

“Just the right aroma. Just the right kick. Just the right sret ingredient,” claims Lea. “Frank’s® RedHot® Buffalo Wings Sauce is just the best for a hot and spicy, mouthwatering, eyetearing experience.”

2. Add onion slices, pepper slices; cook for about 1½ minutes, or until lightly caramelized.

3. Scrape the beef-onion mixture to the center of the skillet, then place two slices of provolone cheese around the beef mixture, directly on the skillet surface. Wait about 30 seconds, when the cheese begins to melt and bubble, quickly stir the melted cheese into the beef and onions.

4. Serve hot on crusty roll. Wipe the nonstick surface clean and repeat the steps to make the next cheesesteak.

NOTE: Prepare one sandwich portion at a time to get the best ooey-gooey results.

Philadelphia is full of cheesesteaks…there’s really nowhere in the city that you can’t get one. But as a native, I can tell you that not everyone makes it right. So, here are my top places to find an eat-worthy cheesesteak:

#1: Pizza Shops MY FAVORITES: PAPA NICK’S PIZZA IN OLNEY AND TONY JR’S IN CENTER CITY Pizza shops in Philly are a thing of beauty, because, with rare exception, pizza is the least of what they have to offer. They make just about everything…especially cheesesteaks. Newbies may want to stick to the basics, but for the adventurous (like me), pizza shops offer all kinds of variations, like the pizzasteak with toppings like pepperoni and bacon.

#2: Food Carts MY FAVORITES: 18TH AND WALNUT, DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM RITTENHOUSE SQUARE PARK I know what you’re thinking…but this is about history.

proceeded to ask her if she’d create a party…not just any party…but a little girl’s birthday party (sans the princess; we’ve nothing against fair maidens mind you, but come on! Disney holds the patent on princess).

For this challenge, Kelly shunned themes altogether and pulled out her magic wand to design a party inspired by a color palette and patterns.

My goal was to present a party with an updated, preppy look using a bold black, white, and grassgreen palette,” says Kelly. I incorporated a couple

of patterns throughout—Swiss dot and lattice—and created a simple girl silhouette for some extra charm and appeal.”

Kelly designs all the graphics, so every detail—invitations, centerpieces, banners, signs, stickers, cake toppers, etcetera—has a crisp, coordinated look.“I aim to create parties that are visually appealing to both children and adults,” says Kelly. Appealing? Stunning is more like it.

Repurpose a piece of furniture from your home to use as your dessert table. Bookshelf… wardrobe…or in this case, a console—it adds

instant interest.” Kelly framed the console with handmade pom-pom garlands that she draped like curtains. It adds that perfect touch of whimsy. An enlarged girl silhouette, featuring the birthday girl’s name, is a focal point that draws the eye’s attention and then leads it down to view an emerald candyland!

“I used all white serving pieces and glass jars to keep the look consistent. The green candy really pops!”

Kelly carries the party theme throughout the treat offerings. Couture sugar cookies are printed with her designs on top, cupcakes are adorned with custom fondant toppers, and brownie bites get a dollop of vanilla frosting and coordinating toppers. Greenand-white candies in apothecary jars are displayed with handmade labels and black-and-white polka dot ribbon.

Kelly created a chic dessert bar using her customcoordinated graphics, glass apothecary jars, and oodles of sweet treats!

I love creating table settings that are geared for children, but have adult elements. For this party, I made custom tablecloths using white denim with

a black and white Swiss dot ruffle hem edged with a grass-green trim. The napkins are made from the same Swiss dot fabric and trimmed in white rickrack.” Kelly pulled in the party’s signature green using silverware and tumblers she found through Pottery Barn Kids.

For the centerpiece, Kelly wanted to make something easy to recreate. “I embellished simple white pots from IKEA with large black rickrack trim. I put two on each table, filling one with wheat grass and the other with a pink floral pomander.” (Notice how Kelly cleverly added an unexpected burst of pink!) A centerpiece stick was inserted into each vase—one a monogram, the other a silhouette. A coordinating banner and pom-pom garlands hang overhead. Our favorite detail? Individual chair place cards—each chair has a silhouette tag personalized with each guest’s name tied to the back with a polka dot ribbon.

“

With the dessert table trend being so popular, it takes some pressure off of having to come up with a party favor. Children (and adults) love filling up

containers with sweets from the candy table to bring home.” Kelly recommends focusing time and energy on creating darling packaging for them to use. For this party, she embellished white tins with polka dot ribbons and stickers of the modern silhouette. She displays the tins on a sideboard with a few of the elements from the dessert bar and table settings, along with a framed note thanking everyone for coming to Charlotte’s birthday party and inviting them to enjoy taking home some treats.

At this beautifully executed event, sweet Charlotte is the only princess taking center stage, and with Kelly’s expert help, she’s able to make every guest feel like royalty. Another well-planned, stylish soirée from the Well-Heeled Hostess!

Interpret this look:

 Keep it clean and modern. Kriste used white, rectangular-shaped platters she found at CB2 and spray painted them black. These provide a clean and organized base for a table display of sweet confections.  Pick a color theme. “Stick with it and don’t vary from it. This will keep the table crisp and modern.”  Create a focal point. “The three-tiered graphic, black-and-white cake was our focal point, flanked by fuchsia carnation balls on black cylinder vases. You can achieve a similar presentation with an urn of branches, a tiered cake, or a large floral display.”  Take advantage of wall space. “If you have wall space, take advantage of it with wallpapered panels of plywood, flag-style garland, or streamers.”  Go for symmetry. “Keep all the same candy together, and organize the different varieties in a straight line, like soldiers. Make sure that you have a balance of the same colors on each side of your focal point.”  Be abundant! “Be certain that all of the platters look full and inviting.”  Pay attention to details. “Create little tags for jars. Use decorative ribbon. Line platters with gift wrap. Make the ordinary extraordinary through your attention to detail.”

CHIRP! “Plan ahead by creating a mock setup in advance of your event,” advises Kriste. “Use Post-it Notes on your platters to label the items, and set up everything ahead of time, so it won’t be too overwhelming the day of your event. Focus on coming up with a fun design you will be proud of!”

Interpret this look:  Play with light! Use acrylic, metal, and other reflective materials on your table and up-light them for a very dramatic effect.  Use natural fibers to bring in textural elements and softness to the space.  Acrylic cubes play with the light, allowing it to pass throughout the space, making it feel larger than it is.  The handcrafted prism-like pendant is purposely over-scaled to add strong visual impact.  The student team designed the table and created it with Plexiglas from TAP Plastics.  Add a personal touch by crafting your own linens. Here Galina Georgieva used a string with acrylic fabric paint to make a pattern and then silk-screened the design onto the linens.

to create a new Emerald City table setting that’s sparkling, over-thetop, and glamorous! This is pure escapism…leave the black-andwhite world behind for an evening of just pure imagination.” —LILY YEUNG

Interpret this look:  Don’t be color-phobic. “The Emerald City was all about the reflection of courage and heart, and embracing the mind through lively colors.”  Let your imagination run wild! Mix various vibrant colors together, and they will work together tastefully. Add loads of embellishments, giving your guests something to “ooh and ahh” over.  Be whimsical. Set a theme that evokes fun childhood memories, and you’ll have an atmosphere of hope and happiness!  The handcrafted prism-like pendant is purposely over-scaled to add strong visual impact.  Add flourishes. Use a plain tablecloth and attach your own handmade rosettes. (Search the blogosphere for DIY assistance)  Make an Emerald City centerpiece. “Use cylindrical glass containers in varying sizes, LED lights, and green Water Gels. Fill the containers with water and add green food coloring. Then use green Water Gels as a sustainable base for submerging the lights.

When complete, the lights will appear as though they are floating.”  Rent! You don’t have to purchase every prop, chair, tablecloth.

I wanted to do a traditional place setting with unconventional objects— turtles as plates, wood goblets as glasses, and feathers and twigs as utensils. Interpret this look:  “This table is whimsical and fun…and not too fussy. I designed an abundance of desserts made completely from flowers and included topiaries made from Yigit’s signature macaroons. To keep the focus on the brightly-colored sweets, I used all-white furniture and tableware.” —BILLY COOK

Interpret this look:  Get crafty! Arrange flowers in ice cream dishes, tart pans, and leftover cupcake liners. “Arranging flowers in pie pans and cupcake cups felt a little ridiculous, but the results were mouth-watering!”  “We made larger cakes by hot gluing fresh flowers onto oasis forms, and the topiaries were made with Styrofoam cones featuring Yigit’s incredible French macaroons.”  “Guests’ first names were lettered on place cards using sugar letters like the ones our moms used to decorate birthday cakes when we turned six!”  Find a weathered door from a salvation yard to use as your dining table.  Give each guest a sweet treat to take home. “After making guests sit among all of the faux treats, I felt they needed something real, too. Yigit made chocolates that we presented in small, white gift boxes, so everyone left with their just desserts!”

should foodies focus on when setting up their kitchens?

C O N S I D E R YO U R D A I LY U S AG E The kitchen layout is super important. If you really love to cook, then don’t fall victim to designing your kitchen around your holiday usage—the one or two days a year when you have a huge crowd to consider. Think about how you use your kitchen every day and work on a layout that will make cooking in it ideal. If you’re in a two-cook household, then think about how you tend to get in each other’s way now, and come up with plans to avoid it, like having prep and cleaning areas opposite from the stove.

“We live in a flat in an historic Stick-Eastlake-style Victorian in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. It’s a typical Victorian in many ways . . . long and narrow, high ceilings, and lots of architectural details.”

Sarah’s first challenge was, what to do with a bowling alley entry? “Like so many Victorian homes in San Francisco, it was separated by a wall when the original home was divided into smaller flats.” Her solution is brilliant. She cut a flea-market-find table on the diagonal and mounted it to the wall.

Its “ghosted” effect makes the entry appear wider, and from a practical standpoint, it’s narrow enough to allow passage, just big enough to hold outgoing mail, and a small enough surface not to become a clutter magnet.

“Along the long hall, I make a joke of its monotony by displaying stills from Monty Python’s Ministry of Funny Walks.

There isn’t really much else to do in this corridor other than amuse ourselves with similar antics…while dodging, Harvey our marvelous mutt, or our two year old flying by on his scooter!”

combination of comfy and cultivated. She extended the ceiling paint color onto the walls and used simple molding as a chair rail from which she hangs four photogravures by Jane Grossenbacher. She painted the walls underneath the molding a creamy yellow.

Both techniques bring down the height of the room, making it warm and cozy, yet light and airy, too.

The furnishings feel collected over time and are eclectically elegant in their mix of both modern and classic lines. “I used comfortable, but not overly large, upholstered pieces; an antique-mirror; glass-top coffee table; a white rug to visually expand the floor space; and a chandelier and long drapes to draw the eye upwards to make the most of the dramatic ceiling height.”

Sarah’s not afraid to get her hands dirty and sees possibilities in others’ castoffs. “I found the corner cabinet on the street. It was stained Pepto Bismol pink and covered with old stickers. I was inspired by Chinoiserie furniture, and painted it dark brown, highlighting the edges with gold paint. I added hidden lighting to the shelves, and now use it as a bar cabinet and display piece that takes up a very small footprint in the room.”

The Wing sculpture was on Sarah and Chris’ wedding registry list and, when left unpurchased, Chris gave it to Sarah as an unexpected surprise for their first Christmas together.

The living room opens into a space that needs to serve multiple functions: guest bedroom, piano room, kids’ playroom, occasional home office, and somewhere to store the books of two English Lit graduates! Pocket doors allow for privacy and an organized closet with shelves for toys, rails for guests’ clothes, and a pull-out desk that’s accessible when necessary.

Before The MeTaMorphoSiS: Sarah’s living room is a lesson on how easy it is to update a room when you are longing for a change. “Small changes, such as throw pillows, color tones, plants, and floral arrangements, are easy and

“Our multi-purpose piano room plays on contrasts in several ways—the white objects against the dark brown bookshelf mimic the piano keys, the charcoal on paper in the artwork, and the black-and-white Fornasetti prints on the end tables. Sarah, now a proud mum to Theo and Miles, transformed the previous “Gentleman’s Study” into a charming nursery by repurposing many of the pieces originally in the space. She turned the antique Asian chest into a toy box and added fabric to the glass front doors of the cabinet for discreet diaper storage. She pulled in fun striped fabric for curtains, and swapped out the rug for a graphic overscale-handwriting design that is much more contemporary. She painted the walls orange and created a mural based on the Dr. Seuss book Oh the Places You’ll Go! (To personalize, Harvey, the family dog makes an appearance among the animals.)

“I wanted to avoid the stereotypical nursery look and color scheme, so I went with orange and red. Theo, my two year old, probably likes his room, but I truly believe that nurseries are for parents, especially tired, semi-nocturnal parents who need simple practicality and a comfortable, cheerful place where they are also happy to spend a lot of time.” nestingnewbies.com

The dining room and kitchen are the last rooms at the back of the flat. “I always wanted to do a room with very dark walls, and rather than experiment on a client, I decided to do it in my own dining room.”

The dark walls work, because Sarah’s dining room has plenty of natural light, and the white wainscoting helps to give the black a break. The glass-and-chrome dining table and sparkly chandelier also help to bounce light around the room.

What Every Toddler Room Really Needs

ACCORDING TO JENNIFER DELONGE...

EVERY TODDLER ROOM SHOULD INCLUDE: • Multipurpose storage—functional storage is a necessity. Young children grow quickly, and so do their collections of toys, books, and artwork. Make sure everything can be easily accessed and then tucked away when not in use.

• Overhead light on a dimmer—perfect for middle-of-the-night checking (and as a soft nightlight to keep the bogeyman at bay).

• Comfortable glider—you’ll be spending lots of time in the room, too; so, make sure you really love it, and it works comfortably for you and your body type.

• Soft carpet or rug—Tummy time, train building, crawling…and other sorts of floor time are so much more yummy this way!

• Memories on display—Every tot needs to be surrounded with notes of love and personal photos. It will teach your children to cherish moments and help them look back and recall fun family happenings.

Inspire Creativity!

T

he best way to nurture creativity and foster its development is to expose our children to all forms of art and encourage them to get involved!

When you expose your children to different forms of art—from drawing to visiting museums to making sticker collages—you’ll be amazed at how they always learn something new. The next time they sit down to draw, you might see one more detail added to their superhero picture or they might now love to paint on an easel, when before they didn’t understand it. Children are sponges, and exposing them to new forms of self-expression is important to building their own personal sense of creativity. I believe it sets them up for becoming great students in school, too!

Hands-on involvement is the key to success! Let your children build their own collages using photos from places you’ve traveled. Make sure that their personal spaces have a way to showcase all their drawings…and just watch your child beam!

Always be sure to show your own excitement for their artwork, and let them know how proud you are of their creativity. You’ll empower your children beyond measure.

A

What are your most important earlycareer experiences that transformed you into the designer you are today?

My time spent working at Conover Restoration on Martha’s Vineyard was transformational. I did everything from gutting the walls to lacing the last piure frame…each step was crucial to making the design vision a reality. Prett y much every life and work experience after that has been vital to getting to ere I am today.

In your online bio, you speak of turning all your life experiences into inspired design…please share what you mean by “inspired design”?

A home should tell the story of your life. Every pie should be inspired by something and/or inspire you. Otherwise, at’s the oint, really?

You’ve been covered in all the major décor magazines…how does it feel to see yourself and your work in the biggest and best glossies?

It’s an amazing honor and accomplishment to be rognized. At the end of a proje, I usually think about at I could have done differently, at I could have done better, and I scrutinize every detail. So, it’s nice for someone to ariate a proje for at it is. It’s so great to hear that others like it!

You were also on Trading Spaces, one the most popular DIY décor television shows ever—what did that do for your career?

This took me in a different direion. I didn’t have time to take on clients for many years. It was a “turn ‘em and burn ‘em” design life. Trading Spaces was very different from real-life interior design work, ich involves endl lead times and completion dates. It was nice (in a way) to be able to see a finished proje so quickly…and then move on to the next design challenge.

How have you grown as a designer since those days on television?

I’m embarrassed by how some of the projes turned out on that show, but very proud of others.

It was always so frantic, heic, and crazy! You had an idea, toed it up in the air, and erever the pies fell is how it ended. I’ll never forget one of my first episodes…the sorority episode that had 2000 square feet of nothing to work with.

The design in my head was fantastic—a very “Vosges Chocolates” idea—but the results were far from my vision!

It’s difficult to compare a job I would do for myself or a client versus at I did on Trading Spaces.

The design concepts were good, but the results were always iffy bause of the budget and time constriions. In general, though, I’d say my design has bome much more organic.

The Laura Day Living webazine, your latest web(venture), is hot! How is it working out for you?

I love working on every iue and putting it all together. It’s a completely different way of designing and editing, but it’s so rewarding en the iue is finally ready! I think that this transition from paper to computer is a very cool thing, and it will just take a ile for everyone to get used to it. It’s definitely more green…ich is great! I’m proud to be part of the first few online magazines, and it will be so interesting to see ere this all goes from here.

You’ve said that your goal is to “inspire others to see their homes in a different light, take a risk or two, and find a fresh life design.” Tell us how you’ve taken a risk…or two…when it comes to your own home décor.

Well, I have a giant, sparkly chocolate donut hanging above my fireplace! I personally like a more tranquil backdrop with a little bit more arive art, so that’s ere I go out on a limb. But everyone should find their own lace for daring design!

Now that you are a mom, how have you changed the way you approach designing a home?

Everything needs to be washable and able to camouflage stains! I tend to buy a lot of things in duplicate, so if one has to be washed, I have a spare. I think more about not having sharp corners. I never thought that I’d do without a coffee table in my living room, but it just works so much better for us without one. So, I gu I would say that I am much more laid back about it all!

What advice do you have for “newbie” moms who want happy children AND a beautiful home?

I personally like a more tranquil backdrop with a little bit more aggressive art, so that’s where I go out on a limb.”

It’s hard not to end up with a living room that looks like a toy store, but at the end of the day (after the kids go to bed), have some easy lace to put the toys away. A storage ottoman as the coffee table is a great way to put everything away quickly, lus it’s a safe pie of furniture for the middle of the room—no sharp corners : ) It makes it easier if you choose fabrics with texture and in colors that will hide those inevitable spills.

But if one must have ite, then just make sure the covers are removable and always buy two (as I mentioned already), bause one will most likely always be in the wash.

Something else that really stuck out as really changing for me was the amount of “stuff” I had within reach of little hands. My “curiosities” got the better of my little curious one, and I had to rethink how I displayed things.

Organizer: It’s best to write down measurements, color choices, and other items to remember in your organizer so that it’s readily available. This prevents making unnecessary mistakes…and purchases.

Lip gloss: I still want to be pretty : ) iPAD: Since I am a blogger, there are times when I am shopping that I might notice an item that triggers a memory—something that I saw in an inspiration photo or on a blog. I usually go to my iPAD or cell to confirm, make an informed decision, and keep on shopping.

Camera: I take photos of anything and everything that’s blog worthy. I love sharing what I find with my readers!

Jeans/Sweats: I wear good, comfy jeans or stylish sweats when I am décor shopping. I may have to crawl, lift, or dig. (You never know.)

reating stylish vignettes in your home can truly be the finishing touch. Use things you already have or seek out things you like that will cohesively fit together in a small space.

For example, the sun mirrors above the chair—I’ve had the one on top for a while, and a year or so later I found the one underneath knowing that both mirrors would work well together. Mixing metals also creates visual depth. The silver glass lamp and candle sticks complement each other without looking too “matchy-matchy.”

Consider repurposing an old piece of furniture by painting or reupholstering it. Choose colors and fabrics that draw you into the space. And, finally, no space is complete without a few decorative objects.

Books you love…an intriguing piece of art…a sparkly piece of quartz…or a little statue will certainly catch attention!

Lately, I’ve found myself endlessly inspired by a sea of costumery. After all, who says the only month of the year for dress-up fun is October?

ur tiny little country produces designers—such as Marcel Wanders, Viktor & Rolf, Droog, and Moooi—who are famous across the globe. Today I’d love to introduce one of my favorite designers: Piet Boon.

He is a renowned furniture designer based in the Netherlands. His design work is clever, timeless, and durable.

His unique and robust design style shows a contemporary signature that’s also timeless. In addition to his furniture work, he has branched out into interior design at home and abroad. On the island of Bonaire, he has designed unique beachfront villas that are sophisticated and chic.

Tips to Beat Clutter Chaos Gail Gray illuminates the art of decluttering.

Clutter seems to multiply faster than eas in the summer heat. Why do some homes seem to be on top of clutter and others seems to be swimming in it?

Routines, strategies, and choices are tools that those who live organized have added to their toolboxes to beat clutter. Staying on top of your clutter with simple solutions will prevent chaos from ruling your roost.

Solution #1: Take Time to Make Time Taking the time to clean up after yourself will save you time in the long run. The more you put this off, the longer it will take to handle. Think of cleanup like an unwashed casserole dish that was left overnight. You will end up soaking and scrubbing for much longer than if you had just washed it before you went to bed.

Solution #2: Have Your Must Do List Make a list of things you must do on a daily basis to keep up your home. Things like making the bed, doing the dishes, and even cleaning the trash out of your car will help you stay on top of clutter with little effort. The neater your home is, the more you will want to keep it that way.

Solution #3: Be the Mail Maven Accumulated paper is the biggest complaint from professional organizers’ clients. Mail is how most paper comes into the home. Papers that come into the home require decision making. Postponing your decision making will leave a pile of clutter behind. Be decisive!

Solution #4: Set a Schedule

Solution #5: Set Boundaries Boundaries are limits we can set for ourselves and our loved ones. Rules like “one in, one out” and “only handle it once” are mantras many organized people live by.

Also, assigning “homes” for your items will establish a boundary, defining where they belong. No more digging through drawers looking for a flashlight in the dark! You will always know where to find things; but, most importantly, you will know where to put them away.

The more routine we have in life, the less mental effort we exert to deal with it! If you set a cleaning schedule for the week, month, and year, your home will stay clean with little effort. Don’t wait until you have a mound of clothes on the floor of your closet before you get the laundry done.

Clutter doesn’t have to take over. Staying on top of simple tasks will keep your home running smoothly.

Since most of us live beyond her personal reach, Camila offers virtual e-decorating services for color consults, room layouts, and design plans. We put her to the test, asking her to design a room for a 20-something moving into her first apartment with no roommates! Camila says that adding the striped fabric as piping on the two dining chairs will create an even more polished designer look. She even suggests using the David Hicks fabric as piping on the x-benches for the same high-end results.
