My Fathers Version My father made the preparation for every outdoor adventure almost as good as the adventure itself. He spread out the gear all over the living room, draping it over chairs, covering the floor. He pored over maps and guides with me and my sister late into the night. We talked through what we needed, might need and what we could live without. The anticipation and meticulous planning made every trip larger than life. Leave No Trace—my father’s version of it—was always part of the adventure and was embedded into every experience. It became part of my life, not just in the outdoors but, more philosophically, how I like to live my life. This intimate relationship with Leave No Trace is also threaded into my work, my volunteerism and, most importantly, my family. Even though my son is now in college, we continue to share great adventures. I hope I have imbued in him some of my father’s irresistible spirit of adventure in all things as well as the outdoor ethic that I believe is more relevant with every passing day. On the following pages, please enjoy Leave No Trace’s 2014 Annual Report. Also take note of the organization’s work, beginning this year, to bring Leave No Trace to every park and every kid in the country. Your role continues to make it possible, and I extend my greatest appreciation for your involvement. Thank you,
Jason Madlung | REI 2014 Chair, Leave No Trace Board of Directors

Hot Spots The Hot Spot Program, a key component of the Leave No Trace in Every Park initiative, raises community awareness and brings solutions to popular natural areas around the country facing heavy recreational use and consequently, the threat of harm to trails, parks and open space areas. With solid Leave No Trace education, programs and volunteer action, future damage to Hot Spot areas can be mitigated.

Leave No Trace In The Outdoors The Center published “Leave No Trace in the Outdoors in 2014 with partner, Stackpoke Books. Leave No Trace in the Outdoors is the most current, comprehensive, science-based book on minimum impact recreation available. With an initial print run of 10,000 copies, the book has experienced far-reaching distribution and broad support from land managers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Stock Video Series The Center shot a video series with the US Forest Service covering Leave No Trace techniques for the recreational use of stock. The finished video series will offer essential training for stock use in both front-country and backcountry recreational settings. The goal is to provide the basic skills necessary to minimize stock impact, and to illustrate different equipment, techniques, and practices for riding environments around the country. The US Forest Service intends to release the video series during the second half of 2015, and it will serve as an excellent complement to existing Leave No Trace information for stock users.
Mountain Biking Ethics Card 2014 marked the development of the Mountain Biking Ethics Reference Card. After working with various field experts, the Center is proud to add this much requested and needed component to our broad cache of Leave No Trace educational materials. 10
Grand Canyon National Park Messaging Grand Canyon’s classic rim-to-rim trails provide one of the quintessential national park experiences. While designed to accommodate large numbers of diverse user groups, park staff have observed a number of impacts related to high-use levels in recent years. Particularly during peak visitation periods such as on weekends in the spring and fall, impacts to park resources, facilities, and visitor experience, have been documented. Abandoned gear, litter, improper human waste disposal, and a lack of trail courtesy are some of the issues noted by both park staff and visitors. With these impacts in mind, and concern that rising popularity in endurance day hiking and trail running is exacerbating these issues, an interdisciplinary group of park staff began addressing the problems by working with Leave No Trace. When teaching people about Leave No Trace, an important piece to convey an understanding of why Leave No Trace practices are effective at minimizing impacts to the landscape. For example, outdoor enthusiasts need to know why sticking to durable surfaces protects trailside plants and minimizes trail widening and why hanging food, trash and smellables keeps wildlife wild. Recent research further emphasizes the importance of providing the why behind the Leave No Trace principles.

Marine Corps Marathons
14
The Center worked with the Marine Corps Marathon to develop marathon-specific Leave No Trace information. Though the Center has created information for large events over the years, this is the first time Leave No Trace has been tailored for marathons. Due to the size of the Marine Corps Marathon (30K participants), Leave No Trace was a logical fit. Portions of the marathon take place on National Park Service property, proving a strong connection between Leave No Trace and existing National Park Service minimum impact efforts.
Backcountry Snow Sports The Center developed Leave No Trace information for backcountry snow sports enthusiasts – skiers and snowboarders. Though the Center has information for winter recreation, there was a demonstrated need for additional information for those who spend time in the backcountry during winter including ski and snowboard touring and overnight stays in maintained facilities such as backcountry huts. Numerous partners in Vermont took part in the effort including the newly formed Vermont Backcountry Alliance, Catamount Trails Association, Green Mountain National Forest, Green Mountain Club, Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation.
Cairns Longtime Appalachian Mountain Club volunteer, Pete Lane, contacted the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics about a growing problem found along trails in his home state of New Hampshire – alteration of, and sometimes damage to, cairns. Cairns are intentionally constructed stacks of rocks that mark trails and guide hikers in the mountains above tree line. Leave No Trace created a working group to develop and review Leave No Trace information specifically focused on cairns.
Burning Man Ethics Longtime Leave No Trace supporter and partner, Burning Man, worked with the Center in 2014 to strengthen their Leave No Trace program for the Burning Man Festival. The refinement of existing Leave No Trace information for the festival as well as the development of new sciencebased information will provide more effective festival outreach. Burning Man worked with the Center to produce ethics cards specific to the festival, which will be widely distributed to over 61,000 people at the 2015 Burning Man festival.

Leave No Trace
in Every Park In 2015
To solve the problem of a lack of comprehensive Leave No Trace programs in our parks, forests and protected areas, the Center embarked on the multi-year initiative, Leave No Trace in Every Park. Leave No Trace #InEveryPark takes many forms from public education initiatives, social media campaigns, interpretive materials, staff and volunteer training, on site education, Junior ranger programs, Leave No Trace Hot Spots, and much more. Leave No Trace Hot Spots support #InEveryPark by raising community awareness about popular natural areas around the country facing the threat of irreversible environmental damage. The Center’s education team supports the program, as does its Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers who travel throughout the country providing public education about

for every
kid Leave No Trace for Every Kid is a multiyear initiative to extend Leave No Trace education to every kid who spends time outside. The first step is The National Youth Initiative consisting of:
1. Developing and delivering comprehensive, standardized
curriculum for outdoor youth programs. 2. Creating and delivering Leave No Trace Certification for camps that increases the collective, positive environmental footprint of the youth and camp experience. Further formalizing Leave No Trace education among this important demographic will increase the number of children and adults that learn vital Leave No Trace skills and principles, ultimately improving the care and quality of our natural world.

“I look to these concepts to solve many of the current issues at our parks. We need to be teaching Leave No Trace to all who come to our parks. If everyone is familiar with the concepts we would not need to post rules. Leave No Trace, it does not get any more simple than that. -Tama Cassidy

“Leave No Trace teaches adventurers a simple responsibility: enjoying the outdoors with others’ enjoyment in mind as well. It allows the new outdoor enthusiast a guided introduction to preserving the very land we love to roam. It allows the veteran enthusiast a way to explore as hard as he or she may desire without a single crumb to retrace.” - Jill Fineis
