LEAVE OUT VIOLENCE

LOVE NEW YORK Executive Director: Clayton Evans Program Coordinator Erica Reade Volunteer Program Assistant: Debbie Ross Staff: Irene Jacobs Gina Stevensen Youth-Alumni/staff: Vicki Gomez Robert Feldman Violence Prevention Committee youth leaders Emmett Asensi Daniella Brito LOVE-Central Youth Board Representatives: Daria Fantaci Emmett Asensi Jayna Tapnia

ABOUT LOVE LOVE is a not-for-profit, grass-roots, youth-driven organization. We educate and empower youth, ages 13 to 19, who have been witnesses, victims or perpetrators of violence – in all of its forms – to stop this destructive cycle in their lives and in the lives of others. LOVE’s Media Arts and Leadership programs provide a supportive environment in which youth can safely examine the violence they have experienced. The programs include photography, jour nalism and videography which serve as vehicles of expression, communication, and education. Using these tools, LOVE youth then reach out to their peers to articulate the impact of violence on their lives and on their communities. In New York City since 2003, LOVE’s Youth Leaders have reached thousands of children and youth through presentations and outreach to schools, community centers and group homes. For more information:

THE LOVE STORY LEAVE OUT VIOLENCE was created in Montreal in 1993 by Twinkle Rudberg, whose life was forever changed by one senseless act of violence. In 1972, Twinkle’s husband was stabbed to death while trying to help a woman who was being attacked for her purse. The attacker was a 14 year-old runaway boy who was homeless, under the influence of drugs, and recently had joined a gang. In response to this tragedy, Twinkle created LOVE to help identify and focus on the causes of teen violence – neglect, isolation, lack of mentorship and domestic abuse. Since its inception in 1993, LOVE has helped more than 40,000 youth with programs from coast to coast in Canada. LOVE launched programs in 2003 in New York City, in 2007 in Israel, and this Fall launched a program in Uganda, Africa.

In the spirit of what LOVE is, we would like to highlight and thank those who have made this night an occasion to celebrate and to look forward to every year. Without the help of these selfless, wonderful people this auction wouldn’t happen. Not only have they volunteered this year but most have volunteered EVERY year for the past 7 years since we created the auction. We thank them most profusely for asking some of the most talented artists in the world to donate to artworks, for sacrificing nights mounting the auction, for sending out invitations to the world, for spending days creating materials, editing, designing, printing, and above all for embracing the LOVE youth and supporting their efforts to make the world a better place. With LOVE, Linda & Claudia Co-Presidents LOVE U.S.

Vicky Gomez, LOVE YOUTH LEADER EMBRACE ME 16X20 MINIMUM BID: $100

Life is full of hardships and pain. Your vision may be blurred and centered on everything else but the sun is always shinning. It is always behind the mess and it’s left to the wise to acknowledge its constant existence. Photography is a conversation I have with the world, one that is personal but which I sometimes share. I am intrigued by nature’s beauty and I love enjoying Gods’ creation :) Life is tough so I like being able to stop time and hold it in my hands (if only for a while). And poetry, well that’s when you hear me speak.

SILENT AUCTION

Alyanna, 18 FREE LOVE 9 X 12

FREE LOVE

PRICE: $150

My name is Alyanna, and I love all types of arts. To me idea is important.

The best ideas start from raw thoughts. Essentially, art expresses my thoughts in their most natural form of matter. This photo, besides being a captured memory when hiking with my sister, reflects a moment of unity. A 100 foot peak of the ground, someone drew on the ground “free love” with an arrow pointing outwards into open space, bordering the river. We may never know each other, but every person who steps onto that trail, including me, is united but the curiosity and ambiguity given off by “free love”.

SMOKE TO ME

My name is Kaitlin and I am 16. My interests are music and pop

culture. I like to notice the details that make the world so diverse and complex. In this photo, smoke to me, has always been a beautiful thing. People don’t realize the amazing nature of its movement. As it is released into the atmosphere, it expands, turning into different shapes and patterns slowly, and I thought this photo was a perfect way to illustrate that to people. The black background against the white smoke highlights the abstract and unique nature that I find so fascinating about smoke.

Laure Leber has focused her lens on her subjects with an exceptional commitment and grace that reminds us how a medium can transcend genre to become art. Working within a community of underground artists in New York since the mid-Eighties, Leber has produced a body of work that is not about well-known art stars but rather about voices central to the scene yet marginal to the market. Her portraits, ongoing unfolding histories that in many cases now span decades, are as much about the nature of creativity as they are about the idiosyncratic personalities in front of her lens. excerpt from Paper Magazine by Carlo McCormick

Writing in The New York Times, Charles Hagen said, “What distinguishes Mr. Levinthal’s work is his interest in emotionally charged historical material. But the real force of his images comes not from his choice of subjects but from the way he tells their stories.” In 1997, the ICP in NY presented the retrospective “David Levinthal Work from 1977 to 1996.” His work is included in numerous museum collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum, and the Menil Collection.

WOOD 16X20

VA L U E : $ 5 0 0 MINIMUM BID: $100

VA L U E : $ 1 0 0 0 MINIMUM BID: $150

Anna Williams was born in Richmond and studied photography at the University of the South. It was there that visiting professor Owen Butler told her: “If you want to shoot, start assisting.” So she moved to NY and converted a tiny East Village bathroom into a darkroom while assisting some of the top studio photographers of the time. A few years later, she was out on her own, and was recognized by PDN’s 30 under 30 for her work. Since then, Williams has been shooting for clients such as Martha Stewart Living, Real Simple, Food & Wine, Target and Williams-Sonoma. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, daughter, and son.

Dan Winters’ unusual celebrity portraits and striking photo essays have appeared in The New Yorker, Los Angeles, New York, Rolling Stone, Vibe, The New York Times Magazine, W, Texas Monthly, and Time, among other publications. He was the recipient of the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Photography and a First Place World Press Photo Award. In 2003, he was honored by Kodak as a photo “Icon” in their biographical “Legends” series. His photos are in the permanent collection at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. He lives in Austin, LA, and Savannah, Georgia, with his wife and son.

PHOTOGRAPHY AUCTION 2012

SEND A YOUTH TO LEADERSHIP CAMP "I've come to think that the true beauty of camp, is the way everyone is accepted, everybody's strengths are appreciated and their flaws vanish, and bonds are built within those few days that are stronger than bonds that had time to develop for years. The friendships that you made last year, grow stronger, and the new friends you make are new bright faces and personalities that just add to the majesty of it all, as everyone's troubles and worries disappear, we start to appreciate the simpler things in life. And that's why leaving so hard, once you view paradise, it's nearly impossible to leave. But back home, in the real world, where things are tough and reality can hit you like a ton of bricks, you just gotta hold on to the close relationships you built with people at camp, and use that energy to persevere and possibly change the hostile environment around you, even if it's one person at a time."
