THE LOVE STORY
COVER ARTWORK BY MICKEY SUMNER
Leave Out Violence was created in Montreal in 1993 by Twinkle Rudberg, whose life was forever changed by one senseless act of violence. In 1972, Twinkle’s husband was stabbed to death while trying to help a woman who was being attacked for her purse. The attacker was a 14-year-old runaway boy who was homeless, under the influence of drugs, and recently had joined a gang. In response to this tragedy, Twinkle created LOVE to help identify and focus on the causes of teen violence – neglect, isolation, lack of mentorship and domestic abuse. Since its inception in 1993, LOVE has helped more than 40,000 youth with programs from coast to coast in Canada. LOVE launched programs in 2003 in New York City, in 2007 in Israel, and recently launched a program in Uganda, Africa.

He also created promotional pictures for his artist friends, such as Blondie, Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Talking Heads, for whom he shot the cover of “Psycho Killer”. His photos have appeared in numerous biographies, including Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, William S. Burroughs and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His work currently appears in three documentaries: “Jean-Michel Basquiat —The Radiant Child,” “Blank City” and “William Burroughs: The Man Within.” He resides in Palm Beach, Florida, and is working on a book of photographs, “Life From Alphabet City.”

Working in the tradition of Henri Matisse, Brandt has adopted beauty and realism as his concerns. Brandt has managed to bridge the gap between the masters of the Western tradition, Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, Pierre Bonnard, Max Beckmann and Willem de Kooning. Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Warren Brandt is a painter whose styles stemmed from the cubism of Paul Cezanne as expressed by the Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning and became simplified in form, and more clearly representational as in the form of Henri Matisse and the Post Impressionists while incorporating the bold strength of line of Max Beckmann and the noted German Expressionists. Brandt’s simply curvaceous line, precious gobs of paint and elaborate studio set-ups reflect on those artists he much admired. His is an earthy celebration of the abundance of things. What is so ingratiating about Brandt’s work is how much he loves it, loves paint, loves his cluttered studio. Brandt studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League and then served as an official portraitist in the Army during World War II. On the GI Bill, he attended Washington University in St. Louis and was a student of Max Beckmann and Philip Guston, while keeping close ties to the Abstract Expressionists in New York.

His most successful works have been the word paintings featuring oversize, three-dimensional text painstakingly integrated into vintage landscape reproductions. The message of the paintings is often thought provoking and almost always humorous with Wayne pointing a finger at vanity, ego and his memories of the South.

I love good graphic novels like “Fun Home”, “Maus”, and “Persepolis”. The rest can pretty much go to hell. I am working on a graphic novel that will probably take YEARS to finish. I have been a professional cartoonist and illustrator for over 25 years. I have written and illustrated five books, and my cartoons and illustrations have appeared in publications too numerous to mention. I also wrote the first episode of “The Simpsons,” and an episode of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” but when that turned out to be not how most TV shows got written, I lost interest. I am almost finished with a screenplay I have been working on with my writing partner and glamour technician. Mimi’s work has been actively published since 1982.
