My year of rest and relaxation

We have all walked into an English bookstore and seen its horrendous “#BookTok”section, riddledwithpoorly written YA romance and recycled storylines. It is somewhat rare that an actuallygoodnovelfindsitswaythere, butOttessaMoshfegh’s2018novelMy YearofRestandRelaxationmanagedto not only have a strong resurgence in popularitythisyear, butalsocaptivatea criticalaudience.Thisbookisdefinitely notforeveryone;itsviolentlanguage, and oftenrepulsiveimagesmaynotbesuited fortheaverageadolescentreader(oreven the average adult reader), but I firmly believeitisaworkofart.

Thisstoryfollowsawealthywhitewoman whosetsouttosleepforayearwiththe help of a gradually increasing dose of prescription drugs. The novel is very blunt, very straight-to-the-point, and extremelyjarring.Therawdepictionof such a flawed character makes for an extremelyinterestingread.Sheincessantly looksdownuponthosesheencounters, particularlyherclosestcompanions, and evencomparesherselftoKateMoss. She affirmsherwealthandselfishness, aware thatsheisa“badperson”,forlackofa betterterm, butdoesnotseemtocare, incredibly self-aware in an almost repulsivebutcompellingway.

This completely unlikable protagonist leadsustoreflectonhowauthorschoose theircharacters, andifthisbookcould haveanegativeinfluenceonnaiveand easilyinfluencedreaders.

Manyyoungpeople, especiallywiththerise offace-level,basiccritiquesofmedia(or evenlackofmedialiteracy)onsocialmedia, tend to take things at face value, not examiningthingsfurtherthanwhattheysee. Protagonists are classically likable, an incarnationofwhatoneshouldstrivetobe. Youngreadersareoftengreatlyinfluenced bythemediatheyconsume, tryingtotake on characteristics of the characters they deem “cool”, so could writing horrible, problematiccharactersnegativelyaffectthe naive? On the other hand, why should authorscareabouthowtheirbookcould possiblybeinterpreted, especiallywhenits subjectisascompellingandoriginalasthe bookathand?

13
- Laia B

ThewayMoshfeghherselfaffirmsher geniusisalsoveryinterestingtoexamine. Couldheroffensivecharactersbeasortof “self-insert”,awayforhertoexpressthe hatredsocietyprohibitsherfrommaking explicit?Shereferstoherownwritingas “likeseeingKateMoss[defecate]”.Her fascinationwithdisgusting, tabootopics isbewitching,Ihaveyettoseeanother author write so vulgarly, and yet, so beautifully.

The novel came out in 2018, and although, afteritsresurgenceinonline popularity, may now be considered a basic, so-called “female manipulator” work, arecentrereadingofitinspired me,nottogoonayear-longbender,but toputmythoughtsintowords.

Although I haven’t read any other of Moshfegh’sworks,Idefinitelyplantoin the future and urge you to read this wonderfulnovel!

“The notion of my future suddenly snapped into focus: it didn't exist yet. I was making it, standing there, breathing, fixing the air around my body with stillness, trying to capture something a thought, I guess as though such a thing were possible, as though I believed in the delusion described in those paintings—that time could be contained, held captive.”

The bright outlook for Fusion Energy

On December 16, 2022, at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, researchers went about their daily tasks, checkingifallsettingswereinplace. They thenpointed192powerfullasersatavery smallamountofHydrogenisotopes.Witha power of 2.05 megajoules, they fired it. Immediately, thedeuteriumandtritiumatoms reached unimaginable temperatures. The pressure built up. Each atom attempted desperately to repel each other with the electromagneticforce.Everythingseemstobe stable.Evenso, thelaserspushedonruthlessly untiltheatomscouldn’tstandthepressure anymore.Forabillionthofasecond, therewas a spark. The fusing of the atomic nuclei created3.15megajoulesofenergy,generating about50%moreenergythantheamountthat wasinitiallythere.

Foryears,scientistshavesoughttocreateanet gainofenergyfromfusionwithfewsuccesses. Butthisisthefirsttimethatfusionisprovento besustainable.

Fusionistheideaofcombiningatoms. With immenseheatandpressure, scientistshopeto combinethemandendeavortocapturethe energy produced in the process. However, combining atoms isn’t an easy task. One exampleofnuclearfusionalreadyexistsinour solarsystem:thesun. There,it’stheimmense pressureatthesun’scorethatcausesfusion. Since that kind of pressure cannot be reproduced, scientistsopttouseheat—about fourtofivetimesashotasthesun’score. In otherwords, wearetryingtocreateasunon earth.

However, whilesoundingterrifying, fusionis saferandcleanerthananyotherenergysource. Withfusion, therewon’tbeextrawastesuch ascarbondioxide.Withit, therealsowon’tbe Fukushima-type accidentsthatwillaffecta cityorcountryforthousandsofyears.Fusion is also extremely effective. One gram of material is enough to produce the energy needed for one person for 60 years in a developed country. Furthermore, there will alwaysbeenoughmaterialtouseasdeuterium canbeextractedfromwaterandtritiumwill beformedduringfusion.

Decades ago, fusion technology was consideredtobeinfeasibleduetotheextreme conditionsneeded.Inadditiontothat, many thinkthatfusionwillbetooexpensivefor many consumers given the success of the project. However, more recent views have been more optimistic. According to the WashingtonPost, fusioncancomeasearlyas 2030whichistheyearthefirstfusionenergy plant will be built if everything goes as planned.
