Kunstenaarstuinen
Tekst: Jackie Bennet
Kunstenaarstuinen describes more than twenty gardens that served as secret refuges, sources of inspiration, studios, and homes for famous painters. From Paul Cézanne's house in southern France to Frederick Childe Hassam in Celia Thaxter's garden off the coast of Maine, USA. Flowers and gardens have often been the first choice for artists when selecting subjects for their work. Claude Monet's garden in Giverny shows how a single garden can be the catalyst for hundreds of great paintings. Sometimes, an entire village becomes the center for an artist colony, as seen in Murnau in the Bavarian hills of southern Germany and in Skagen, at the northernmost tip of Denmark. This book is about the lives, homes, and gardens of famous artists.
These gardens can still be visited today, and visitor information is included in the book.

Fietsend door de Himalaya
A 1,100-kilometer bike ride through one of the most spectacular mountain regions in the world: the Indian Himalayas, in the politically sensitive border area with Tibet. Starting from Shimla, the former summer capital of the British, through the lesser-known regions of Kinnaur, Spiti, and Lahaul, over mountain passes higher than 5,000 meters, to the high-altitude desert of Ladakh. Myra de Rooy cycles through challenging terrain, at high altitudes on bad roads, facing the risk of rockfalls. The breathtaking views and remarkable encounters with the local population make this journey unforgettable.
Fietsend door de Himalaya weaves adventure with inspiring stories of the hospitable mountain people in an awe-inspiring mountain world, and the experience of riding through a vast, empty, and wild landscape.
The fifth book by Myra de Rooy published by DATO; she inspires many with her beautiful stories that convey strength, perseverance, and compassion.

The stories behind the hits
Volume 1: 1965-1984
The first part of a trilogy on 60 years of the Dutch Top 40
Since its first broadcast on January 2, 1965, on Radio Veronica, the Dutch Top 40 has grown into the most influential music chart in the country. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Top 40 in 2025, three books are being published, each covering twenty years of Top 40 history. This first volume of the trilogy focuses on the period from 1965 to 1984. Countless artists and musicians share the stories behind the hits they scored on the Top 40: from Petula Clark, Otis Williams (The Temptations), and Barry Hay (Golden Earring) to Liz Mitchell (Boney M.), John Illsley (Dire Straits), and Robin Campbell (UB40).
This anniversary book also features a number of new and remarkable anecdotes. For example, Matthew Fisher reveals the true inspiration behind his famous organ solo in A Whiter Shade of Pale, and Melanie explains how Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) saved an American helicopter unit in Vietnam. Andy McCluskey uncovers how the Texan blues-rockers of ZZ Top were inspired by OMD's synth-pop, and Steve Porcaro explains why Africa was added as the final track on the album IV Supplemented with personal memories from Top 40 creator Willem van Kooten and Top 40 DJ Lex Harding, exclusive interviews with producer Hans van Hemert and songwriter Billy Steinberg, year-end charts, and many photos, this first volume of 60 jaar Top 40 is not only a must for Top 40 fans but for all music lovers in the Netherlands!
"On January 2, 2025, it will be exactly sixty years ago, and we're still talking about it. To my own surprise. And with a certain degree of pride." – Willem van Kooten
“Nine out of ten people who listened to the radio on Friday afternoons tuned in to the Top 40. Unprecedented.” – Lex Harding

Zwijnestaarten van Ieper
Photography and text: Geert Koevoets
The book Zwijnestaarten van Ieper takes you to the former front areas of World War I. Visual artist and photographer Geert Koevoets has been exploring this poignant piece of history for many years. Two themes that particularly interest him are the devastated landscapes and the infirmaries behind the front lines. After all, the landscape is a reflection of what took place there at that time, and at the infirmaries, soldiers were patched up to return to the front. The landscape was at that time crisscrossed with trenches where the most horrific human dramas played out. It was a war that was completely locked down and did not move forward or backward. For four years, this drama played out in the front area stretching from Nieuwpoort to Basel.
Contributions from: Dominiek Dendooven, Piet Lesage, Diederik van Vleuten, and Marco van Bel Geert Koevoets (1957) is a visual artist based in Tilburg. He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg and then at the Academy in Maastricht, specializing in sculpture. Since 1997, he has become interested in World War I and has created works that depict this theme. In addition to creating sculptures and installations, photography is an important aspect of his artistic practice.
The Ypres Salient, a meandering ridge east of the West Flemish town of Ypres, is especially known for the brutal battles that took place here. The warring parties were separated by a narrow strip of no man's land. On either side, soldiers erected a line of barbed wire barricades as the last protection against an enemy assault. This barricade was constructed using iron rods twisted into the ground. The curled ends, resembling a pig's tail, allowed these front stakes to be screwed quickly and silently into the clay soil. Several loops were made in the above-ground part of the stakes to guide the barbed wire. The Belgians called it Zwinesteerten, the British called it Silent Pickets, and the French referred to it as Queues de Cochon. For Geert, the front stakes are striking artifacts that symbolize the steadfastness of the armies and the senseless bloodshed of frontal warfare.

Drug War Mexico - Narco Violencia
Photography: Teun Voeten
Text: Teun Voeten, Howard Campbell, and Javier Valdez Cárdenas
In 2016, then-President Calderón declared war on the Mexican drug cartels. Many leaders have been eliminated, but the power of the cartels, which have a multi-billion dollar revenue, has not been broken. With 400,000 drug-related murders and 60,000 disappearances in 2024, the Mexican drug war is currently the most violent conflict in the Western Hemisphere.
War photographer and cultural anthropologist Teun Voeten, who has documented conflicts worldwide for 33 years, captured drug violence in powerful images. He photographed the victims, funerals, morgues, police officers, soldiers, and cartel members, as well as the underclass of addicts, homeless individuals, and petty criminals in prison.
As an anthropologist, Voeten recorded a pantheon of narco-saints, some powerful symbols of comfort, others grim idols worshipped by drug lords. He witnessed prisoners immersed in the passion of Christ, families coming together for Dia de Muertos, couples dancing to the music of Mariachi bands, and students protesting against the violence. Featuring essays by renowned Texas anthropologist Howard Campbell and celebrated Mexican writer Javier Valdez Cárdenas, who was murdered in 2017, this photo book demonstrates that Mexican drug violence is a dangerous force that poses a significant challenge to the international world order. To also reach a Latin American audience, all texts are presented in both English and Spanish.
Teun Voeten studied cultural anthropology and philosophy in Leiden. Since 1991, he has covered conflicts worldwide as a photographer and author. He has written books about the underground homeless in New York (Tunnelmensen, 1996) and about the bloody civil war in Sierra Leone (How de body? Hoop en horror in Sierra Leone, 2000), which nearly cost him his life. In 2008, he focused on drug violence in Mexico and created the photo book Narco Estado: Drug Violence in Mexico (2012). He earned his PhD at Leiden University with a study published as Mexican Drug Violence: Hybrid Warfare, Predatory Capitalism, and the Logic of Cruelty (2020). After that, he researched drugrelated crime for the city of Antwerp and wrote DRUGS: Antwerpen in de greep van de Nederlandse syndicaten (2020). In September 2022, his latest book titled Drug van de Duivel: de wereldwijde opkomst van crystal meth was published. Voeten is currently investigating the fentanyl crisis on the American West Coast, from Vancouver to Tijuana.

Photography: Allard Kaai
Text: Pieter Hoexum and A.L. Snijders
In addition to eternal beauty, there is also such a thing as everyday beauty. Fluttering laundry on a clothesline can be beautiful in a very modest and unassuming way. A wall with a blue door, two misaligned windows, an electricity box, and a gate can suddenly form an interesting abstract composition. It is beauty that does not catch your eye immediately, that does not stand out right away. Most of the time, it doesn't attract attention at all; you only see it out of the corner of your eye. As soon as you focus on it, it actually slips away again. It is all the more impressive that Allard Kaai has succeeded in capturing that everyday beauty in photographs.
Allard Kaai (1964, Alkmaar) graduated in 1991 from the Utrecht School of the Arts, majoring in autonomous painting. From 1991 to the present, he has participated in various exhibitions and art projects. His work has been acquired by private collectors and art institutions. Additionally, he has created several documentaries and is active as an art handler in museums. Since 2020, he has fully dedicated himself to autonomous (street) photography. His photographic oeuvre is characterized by striking compositions in urban settings.

Text and images: Thomas Eurlings Foreword: Arthur Japin
A little art Bible of over 500 pages
REVERSE explores the back sides of portrait busts created by Dutch product and interior designer Thomas Eurlings. His fascination arose after seeing a photo of the back of a bust of Marie Antoinette at the Museum of Modern Art in Houston (depicted on the cover). The back, rich in details such as curls, braids, pearls, and ribbons, features a modern silhouette. Eurlings found it intriguing that one could explore these details without anyone looking back, creating both distance and intimacy. Arthur Japin wrote the foreword for REVERSE. "Reverse is unique because it makes us aware of something that has always existed, but now we see it differently. Eurlings invites readers to view art from a new perspective." In REVERSE, Eurlings has curated nearly 200 images in 20 chapters. These vary by periods, materials, techniques, or groups. The oldest bust is of Akhenaten from ancient Egypt, and the most recent is of King Charles III from 1981, when he was still Prince of Wales. Although the book spans many centuries, it is primarily a visual journey that offers a new perspective on portrait busts. Eurlings' introductions provide historical context, insights into materials and techniques, and are complemented by personal observations.
Thomas Eurlings (Leiden, 1983) is a Dutch designer, graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven. His studio, ThomasE. Creations, designs interior products, jewelry, and complete interiors. In addition, Eurlings is an avid art collector with a particular interest in photography. Reverse is his first book, in which he aims to provide a fresh perspective on the concept of the portrait bust. He invites the reader to discover a new dimension in these sculptures, where the back is just as captivating as the front.
