GIAN LUCA GENTILI BEYOND VISIONS

Gian Luca Gentili, born in Rome in 1963. Architect, artist, designer with a passion for life and surf. A man with more than just one vision... “Painting by Gian Luca Gentili is an explosion of colors, a celebration of life, that fully reflects a playful personality and a great psycho-physical strenght of the artist” says The Wall Street International. Visiting one his show is engaging. A true experience involving all senses. Gentili’s art is vibrant, friendly, symbolic, trasgressive, sincere, appealing, unconventional and sexy just like him. Art curator Sveva Manfredi Zavaglia met him during “Steamworks Animal Farm”, Gentili’s last solo exibition in June at De Masi Showroom in Rome.

SMZ: What is your relationship with art? Where does it come from?

world of the Steamworks and in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. A revelation.

GG: My relationship with art…well, I have been drawing since the very first moment my dad gave me a pencil.. I was 3 years old. As a professional architect I had to focus on my work, and I drew essentially only for my clients, till 9 years ago when I finally started “working” on myself… surf lessons have been a key to find balance (physical and mental) and to find the energy to start this new artistic challenge. It was like falling in love with art again… painting warms my heart.

SMZ: How important is the human element?

SMZ: What is Steamworks? GG: It’s a project started 2 years ago. I’m very attracted by old fashion objects, forgotten items like old pocket watches, old copper engines, top hats, Taits, .. while researching I found myself in the enchanted

GG: The human element is the key to understand my research but the beastial element is even more important. The animal instinct is what leads me. SMZ: Your artworks are powerful and sometimes filled with strong images. Do they speak about your interiority? GG: Yes, definitely SMZ: How is your routine? Are you afraid of being bored? GG: I do not have a routine, I never get bored. I love what I do, no matter if it involves architecture, design or art. Nice food, the sea, surifing ..life is stunning and I truly have no idea of what boredom is all about. SMZ: How did your collaboration with Le

Dame Art Gallery start and what are your next projects? GG: We met by chance and it was love at first sight! We have many projects together, including an exhibition in London soon. SMZ: One last thing ... Gian Luca Gentili ask yourself a question and tell us the answer. GG: Well, the question is “why do I paint?” Because it is’a

privilege. My message in a bottle would be: painting is joy, it is love for life. So, enjoy it! We don’t need more pain, I see people suffering every day and that’s why I go upstream, I don’t want to depict the pain .. the world has already plenty of it... I want to share a vision where men and animals are strange figures transcending time and reality.
