COLLECTOR’S LOFT
Curvaceous shape creates a bold juxtaposition between old and new
The meandering walls frame an open a space that privileges long perspectives, with more sheltered corners and niches nestled in the curves. In this hybrid space exhibition areas merge into the living areas; a floating exhibition wall blends into library shelves on one side and into a display case on the other side. The client as collector had sought a space in which he could live comfortably while interacting with the many paintings, objects and books he has brought together over the years. The loft aims to merge life and art by facilitating these daily interactions, and by making clearer his own unusual way of seeing. Located approximately 15 minutes outside of Palma de Mallorca in an exclusive community called Son Vida, the eponymously named Casa is an example of design poetry in motion. The completion of this home marks the arrival of third millennia architecture on the island of Mallorca. The task at hand was straightforward: take a very un-extraordinary existing Mediterranean villa constructed in the 60s and transform it into something extraordinary. The 800-square meter luxury villa transgresses the constraints of site and context, redefining luxury architecture as it is typified by the traditional and prolific Mediterranean and Tuscan styles otherwise found on the island.

Spotlight: Concept: “Casa Son Vida 1 aims to redefine the notion of the luxury villa by moving most of the paradigms of luxury towards a more contemporary and forward-looking expression of architecture and technology.” -Sebastian Knorr, tec co-founder and design director.
Spotlight History: The collector and the architect became acquainted when Ben van Berkel was involved in the unrealized renovation and expansion of the Wadsworth Atheneum. Soon after the collector spoke of his intention to have a house designed by his new friend, the architect. Over the years, the pair regularly visited possible sites for this new house in the suburbs of Hartford. In a phone call to Amsterdam in the early spring of 2007 the collector announced he had bought a loft space in Manhattan. The architect finally received his commission: not for a house, but for a home for the collector and his art and books.

The designers had to merge the front part of the space being close to the exterior of the building with the back zone by “reducing depth of space while keeping the panorama.” They wanted the overall look to be an Escher-inspired space but had to deal with complex acoustic and ventilation issues, meaning they had to find a way to mix Inside, the primary space at Instalaçao is a long corridor. The pedestrian bridge with a width of twelve meters connects the French National Library and the Bercy park. The new footbridge maintains the coherence of this unusually open Parisian space by reaching across the river in a single, continuous span, without intermediate supports. Two arches constitute the geometry of the bridge, the tender form answers to the strictness of the architectural environment. These arches are structure and pathfare at the same time.

WEBB BRIDGE
“The hardest thing to learn in life is which bridge to cross and which to burn.” – David Russell, Scottish classical guitarist
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA The bridge comprises two distinct sections: the 145m long existing structure and a new curved 80m long ramped link. The ramp takes up level changes and creates a point of arrival at the south bank. Both are joined seamlessly, with an emphasis on volume and containment within the curved and sinuous form. There are two main components to the bridge: the deck/ belly of pigmented concrete screed on steel box beams and the containing baskets or ribs of circular and ovoid hoops which encircle the bridge deck.

At the hottest spot in the most important alley of decoration in the city: alameda Gabriel Monteiro da Silva there was the only empty plot left. The client rented it and commissioned the architect to come up with a very low budget design, something that could be assembled quickly, respecting the existing trees. The idea was to use discarded containers, to reuse a readymade object, a leftover of the actual intense commodities exchange. The project was organized inside two tunnels of containers, taking advantage of the linearity of its inside spaces, and a double height hangar attached to it, a contrasting cubic volume. Huge polycarbonate sliding doors connect the store with the city and an inner garden.

HWCD Associates This annex for the Pompidou Center in Paris, is to be built in Metz as a complex including an art museum and theater. By locating a large roof in the park, and by opening the glass shutter faรงade around the perimeter, a continuous transition of the interior and exterior space is created. The roof is made from laminated wood in a hexagonal woven pattern composed in the form of a Chinese bamboo-woven hat. This large wooden roof is covered in a Teflon-coated fiberglass membrane and allows soft natural light to filter into the interior. The main galleries are a series of 90mx15m cantilevering rectilinear tubes that float above the ground, and their glass window ends point in the direction of the cathedral and other monuments of the city.

The tea house is organised in asymmetric cubes on a lake. From the exterior, the bamboo courtyard is a cubic form with a variation of solids and voids. The strong verticality becomes more apparent at night when the teahouse lights up to illuminate the surroundings. The simple form illustrates the congruent blending of architecture with nature. Moreover, the natural materials such as bamboo and bricks provide sustainable sensibilities. The pocket of voids improves natural ventilation within the bamboo courtyard while the thick brick wall retains heat in winter, reducing the dependency of mechanical heating and cooling system.

This project reinvents the typology of the urban townhouse on a typically narrow infill Manhattan plot. By radically reconfiguring the organization and façade of the building, open loft-like living spaces find privacy from the street behind a four-storey vertical library. The conventional plan and section were redefined with the stair and elevator core pushed up against the street façade, instead of running along one of the party walls. The front façade engages the street with a custom water-cut aluminum rain screen with brickshaped openings relating to the solid bricks of its neighbors and panel joints corresponding to the neighboring building stories. During the day, it appears as a flat, patterned mass, marked off from the adjacent houses by the tall glass slots on either side. At dusk, this impression wanes as the glow from the horizontal slit windows and the vertical glass slots animates the street façade.
TOWNHOUSE DESIGN
GLUCK+
Townhouse P6 on Caroline-von-Humboldt-Weg 14 is a five-floor urban residential home with a height of 19 meters located on a lot that is only 6.50 meters wide and 35 meters deep, i.e. measuring only 227 square meters. The residential concept is based on the “stacking” of three different styled duplexes, each measuring approximately 120 square meters. The appearance of the whitewashed house is dominated by three window axes with nearly room-high French windows edged in delicately profiled pilasters. The central entrance is enhanced by the folded wall and presents a generous entrance invitation in conjunction with the front yard. This provides the individual residency in the center of Berlin with a truly urban physique – in harmony with the scale of the metropolis.

The office takes the form of an aerodynamic tube, with a long window on one wall that extends into part of the ceiling. Acting as both a window and a skylight, the glass wall floods the office with light, eliminating the need for artificial lighting during the day. The window is lined with the employee’s desks, giving them an eye-level view of the forest floor. Falling leaves, animals, and wildlife pass by, creating a shifting forest landscape that changes throughout the day. Employees can also look up into the tree boughs and sky through the curved part of the glass casing.Half of the building is submerged into the earth, which provides an excellent degree of insulation. A stone staircase leads down into the office, which has sturdy lower walls of brick. Shared desks line the bunker, which glows with spherical lanterns and desk lamps when illuminated at night.
This building houses the cooperative bank Rabobank Nederland. The company selected Sander Architecten from of a group of twenty to create and supervise the execution of the entire interior design. The client required a new design for the offices that would support new ways of working. The design needed to emphasize cooperation between employees and teamwork. The workspaces are tailored to suit specific activities: group and one-toone meetings, or a place to write a report with maximum concentration. Architect Ellen Sander sought to create space that would ‘flow’ naturally. The busiest routes automatically formed around the cores with the lifts and staircases, beyond which more peaceful zones naturally emerged. Vertical partitions were avoided so that the horizon would always be visible. The meeting pavilions are made from washi paper and paperboard, creating a distinctly tactile experience.

Folkwang Library was conceived as a monolithic body built atop the level base of an old rough stone wall. The design concept for the building is based on the idea of the ‘museum showcase’: An exterior shell protecting the valuable contents within. The functional areas are grouped around the reading room, which lies at the centre of the building. The book shelves are arranged in strict order around this
The library was designed to offer a wide range of services flexibly to a large number of customers. This imposing building provides a gateway to the new information age. The design of the building’s interior is based on an aligned series of openings in the ceilings. Three distinct apertures and the main staircase form a series of spaces serving as a basis for the ambiance of the interior, the functional zones as well as the architecture of the façade. The
room, thereby lending scale and structure to the building as a whole. There are two entrances to the library: The main entrance is from the courtyard via a flight of external steps, designed to approximate the style of the entrances to the other buildings leading off from the courtyard. The library’s other entrance on the Klemensborn serves as an emergency exit.

architectural concept of the façade directly reflects the functional solutions of the interior. The facilities have been divided into functional zones with the aim of facilitating the use of the library and its services. This will, in turn, support and facilitate the learning process. The apertures are encircled by walkways and the information zone, which is, in turn, surrounded by the collections zone.
