Infrared Reflectography and Photomicroscopy Fine lines of preparatory drawing can be seen in the face. These were followed closely during painting, and can be seen faintly through the surface, particularly in the lips.
The underdrawing in the hand is much more free than that seen in the face, and the position of the fingers has been altered in the final painting.
Edward VI Unknown English artist Oil on panel, c. 1547 NPG 5511
Queen Elizabeth I, The ‘Darnley’ portrait Unknown Netherlandish artist Oil on panel, c. 1575 NPG 2082
Infrared Reflectography This image shows some of the first marks made by the artist, known as underdrawing. It shows that the artist kept quite closely to the drawn design, but made lots of sketchy marks to capture the queen’s left hand and originally intended to position the feathered fan slightly higher.
