The Club is dedicated to both firearm and archery safety with training programs, led by certified instructors, for new sports enthusiasts. These programs include a women’s only firearm safety class and, of course, a certified Range Safety Officer is always on duty when the club is open.

Founded in 1928, the Bainbridge Island Sportsmen’s Club is the oldest community organization on the Island. This historic island institution is nestled on 17 acres of old growth forest in the middle of the Island. The Club provides members, their guests and the visiting public with access to a pistol range, rifle range, archery range, youth fishing pond and a well-used clubhouse.

Our Stewardship

Our Community Among the Club’s “Best Practices” standards management activities are: n A redesign of the pistol range that significantly reduced the noise profile of the range and an EPA compliant best practice mechanism for trapping and recycling lead.

The Club understands its responsibility as caretaker for precious island resources: old growth forest, the earth from which it has grown and water quality. To that end the Club works closely with all levels of government to ensure we conform to state-ofthe art environmental land use management methodologies, including remediation guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH].

n A voluntarily suspension of the Rifle Range to redesign it for improved safety as well as noise and lead management. The new range will feature limestone trenches and ground cover to filter out lead ions and compounds. Between range cleanups, it will incorporate sand traps and a berm cap to minimize rainfall leaching and other impacts on the range. New sound mitigation strategies will also be deployed. n R egular acid content testing, lead “mining” and lime treatment of the Trap Range. Thousands of pounds of lead has already been mined (and recycled) and our system of tracking trap shots allows us to know exactly when it is time to test, clean and treat the range again. n A high berm and fence plus our vigilant Range Officers on our Archery Range ensure that arrows do not leave the property. Certified Instructors instill best practices in all newcomers to this sport emphasizing safe shooting practices.

As a member of the community for almost 90 years at our present location, most islanders know where we are located. When new residents contemplate a move into our neighborhood it is important that their realtor apprise them of our Club and our activities.

In fact, we schedule the least number of active range hours of all Kitsap County Sportsman’s Clubs. We are very strict about enforcing those limited and specific use hours. And we are flexible. On a neighbor’s request we even closed our ranges for a wedding celebration!

That said, our new range designs will follow modern design protocols to minimize sound impacts on the neighborhood…and we have and continue to install sound mitigation panels throughout the range. For example, when we reconstructed our pistol range with sound deadening panels, the perceived sound at the intersection of New Brooklyn and Sportsmen’s Club was significantly reduced.

Of course, we welcome all visitors and encourage open, civilized dialogue with all our Island neighbors.

Bottom Line: We live here too and want to be around for the next generation of islanders!
