Continued from page 3 Another hot topic of late, at the show and online, is bottle reproductions. Chip Cable had a rather decent repro Drake’s Plantation Bitters that was scary at his dealer table. We are covering this online as efficiently as possible and realize that nothing beats seeing examples first-hand and hearing from an expert in that area. We were able to arrange for reproduction authority Jim Bender to bring and display some of his bottles in the display area at Manchester. We will have a video of Jim talking about his bottles posted online and hope that we can arrange a seminar talk at the Lexington National. Did anyone feel like there was not enough time at the show for all the great events? I am pleased to report that your Federation is exploring the possibility of doing away with the one-day public show and going to the two-day expo format. The new shows would be called Antique Bottle Conventions and occur on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They would begin in 2016. This obviously means we need to bring in more people, but it also means having more evenings to stage events. Having the Bottle Battle after the Banquet and cocktail party was a challenge. Elizabeth and I even had a wine tasting after that and I had

to wake up at 4:30 the next morning! We can do it. Think positive. Our shows get bigger and better each year. Oh, these growing pains! During our semi-annual FOHBC board meeting, we covered a lot of ground in the four allotted hours and we held our annual membership meeting in the afternoon. If you did not attend, you can read the notes online at FOHBC.org. It looks like we may be offering lifetime memberships again. I always wondered why this was stopped. I for one, will opt for this. Did you know that former President Jimmy Carter is a FOHBC lifetime member? Congratulations also to Hall of Fame recipients Gene Bradberry and Alan Blakeman, special award recipients Jim and Joyce Rogers, President’s Award recipient Alan DeMaison and all of the bottle club category recipients. Well deserved awards. Stay cool, fall will be here soon. Enjoy your bottles, family and friends. We belong to a great hobby. Support your FOHBC.

It is time to make the Virtual Museum a reality. We are now ready to move forward with the design development and eventual implementation of the FOHBC Virtual Museum of Historical Bottles and Glass. The FOHBC Virtual Museum will be established to display, inform, educate, and enhance the enjoyment of historical bottle and glass collecting by providing an online Virtual Museum experience for significant historical bottles and other items related to early glass. The Virtual Museum will be a digital expression of what one might find in a real ‘bricks and mortar’ museum. There will be galleries, exhibitions, resources and support functions to enhance the visitor experience. The museum will contain, but not be limited to, images of subject bottles and glass, a written description of those subjects with dimensions, and if available, the history of the bottles along with an estimation of rarity. The museum will grow and be expandable.

FOHBC Manchester Board Meeting

by Dave Maryo Western Region Director

Walking into the FOHBC board room in Manchester, New Hampshire seemed like any other small gathering of friends. Board members were greeting each other and catching up on each other’s lives. The FOHBC board is a diverse group with some being businessmen, public servants, religious leaders and professionals. Some board members have been involved with the FOHBC board for many years. They are the anchors that keep us in line with the organization goals set when the FOHBC was founded. Others became involved over the years and bring new ideas that help us guide the organization into the future. The room was nearly full when a few more members arrived and joined in sharing the latest news. When our president, Ferdinand Meyer V, brought the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m., the friendly gathering of bottle collectors suddenly turned into a business meeting. At this point, I could tell by the looks on faces of board members sitting around the room that they are serious about supporting the bottle hobby. After presenting some statistics during his opening statement, Ferdinand directed Alan DeMaison to present an overview of the FOHBC business matters before moving on to other topics on the agenda. One of our first topics was finance. Our treasurer, Gary Beatty, and business manager, DeMaison, reviewed the income and expenses for the year, confirming that the FOHBC is financially sound. Although most people would find this portion of the meeting boring, keeping the FOHBC financially healthy is the only path to support our membership for years to come. The next topic was membership. Alan DeMaison reported to the board that membership has grown to the largest it has been in the history of our federation. Discussions about supporting our membership now and into the future highlighted that the FOHBC will need to change to support our members’ needs in a digital world. The reinstitution of Lifetime Memberships was also discussed. Several board members commented that we now have more ways to

communicate with members than we had when our communication was limited to the FOHBC magazine. Board members are committed to using the latest technology available to our membership. As the meeting continued, our past president Gene Bradberry reviewed proposed by-law revisions regarding Internet communication and misconduct. The proposed revisions to the by-laws were approved by the board. The next topic was our national shows. Manchester show chairman Michael George and co-chair Maureen Crawford joined us to give us an update on the show. It was a nice change from the less exciting business that was covered up to this point. After discussing the Manchester show our convention director, Tom Phillips, presented plans for our upcoming national shows in Lexington, Kentucky and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Board members brought up many ideas to improve future shows. It was suggested that we provide general admissions on Saturdays as well as Sundays and other changes that would improve and lengthen the national shows for our members. We went on to discuss many other topics during the four-hour meeting, but we did not finish the aggressive list of items on our agenda. At noon, the board members agreed to adjourn the meeting for the day and take up the remaining items on the next conference call. The meeting was adjourned and board members left to join their spouses for lunch before the rest of the day’s events began. From my perspective as West Region Director, one of the most important topics from the Manchester FOHBC board meeting was related to better communication with our membership. FOHBC Board members would like more direct communications with our clubs and members to help guide our organization. I encourage all our FOHBC members to get involved, contact their board members, support the FOHBC and improve our organization and the hobby.

Glass Works Auctions is the auctioneer for the show in Lexington, Kentucky next year. I don’t know if that auction will be as good as this one, but Jim said he was working on it and don’t be surprised if it is not even better.

Long tables of glass made the auction preview lot’s of fun.

Where there’s a will there’s a way to leave Donations to the FOHBC Did you know the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors is a 501C(3) charitable organization? How does that affect you? It allows tax deductions for any and all donations to the FOHBC. You might also consider a bequest in your will to the FOHBC. This could be a certain amount of money or part or all of your bottle collection. The appraised value of your collection would be able to be deducted from your taxes. (This is not legal advice, please consult an attorney) I give and bequeath to the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors, 1605 Clipper Cove, Painesville, OH 44077, the sum of $____________ to be used as its Board of Directors determines. The same type wording could be used for bequeathing your collection or part of it, however, before donating your collection (or part of it), you would need the collection appraised by a professional appraiser with knowledge of bottles and their market values. This is the amount that would be tax deductible. Thank you for considering us in your donation plans. Ferdinand Meyer V, President Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors

Membership Benefits The Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors cordially invites you to join a dedicated group of individuals and clubs who collect, study and display the treasured glass and ceramic gems of yesteryear. The Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors (FOHBC) is a non-profit organization supporting collectors of historical bottles, flasks, jars, and related items. The goal of the FOHBC is to promote the collection, study, preservation and display of historical bottles and related artifacts and to share this information with other collectors and individuals. Federation membership is open to any individual or club interested in the enjoyment and study of antique bottles. The Federation publication, Bottles and Extras, is well known throughout the hobby world as the leading publication for those interested in bottles and “go-withs”. The magazine includes articles of historical interest, stories chronicling the hobby and the history of bottle collecting, digging stories, regional news, show reports, advertisements, show listings, and an auction directory. Bottles and Extras is truly the place to go when information is needed about this popular and growing hobby. In addition to providing strength to a national/international organization devoted to the welfare of the hobby, your FOHBC membership benefits include: • A full year subscription the Federation’s official bi-monthly publication, Bottles and Extras • One free ad per yearly membership of 100 words for use for “wanted” items, trade of offers, etc. • Eligibility for a discount at FOHBC sponsored shows (National or EXPOs) towards “early admission” or dealer table rent • Access to a knowledge of the world of antique bottle collecting unavailable elsewhere • Contact information for clubs devoted to the study of historical bottles • A forum for your writings, articles, and editorials regarding the hobby • Participation in the nomination and selection of Federation members for the Honor Roll and Hall of Fame • Federation-sponsored writing, show poster, and newsletter-design contests • Free publication assistance for your book or manuscript • And more... Article Submission Requirements: All Bottles and Extras articles or material need to be submitted on CD (preferable) or an email using a compressed (zipped) file. The file must be created by Microsoft Word, Publisher or Adobe N-Design so the editor does not have to retype the work. High-resolution digital images are our preferred format. Please submit digital images on a CD according to the instructions below. We will accept e-mail submissions only if the image resolution is acceptable. The e-mail or CDs must have only ONE subject per transmission to minimize confusion. Each image must be accompanied by a caption list or other identifying information. Professional-grade equipment is a must to achieve the size and quality image we require. The highest setting on the camera should be used for maximum resolution and file size. Only high quality images will be considered. Please do not send photographic prints or scans of images—the color and quality are generally not up to par compared with digital images or slides scanned by our imaging department. We will consider exceptions for photos that can’t be easily found, such as older historical images. We rarely use slides anymore and prefer not to receive submissions of slides due to the time and liability involved in handling them.
