We hope you have enjoyed these stories and we thank you for making our community a better place to live.”

Charlie Male / 3 Years Ragdoll and Maine Coon Our cat Charlie is a perfect spokes cat for rescued pets everywhere because he is proof that the adoption system works! Charlie’s prior family thoughtfully and lovingly gave him up hoping that he would be adopted. When my family met him we knew he was ours the minute we laid eyes on him! He has been kind, playful and loyal since we brought him home and speaks to us with his big blue eyes. He also loves our dogs! Charlie has brought happiness into our lives, because he has filled an empty place in our hearts that we never knew was there!

Taloolah

Rocky

Female / 9 Years Domestic Short Hair

Male / Silver Years Maine Coon

Taloolah was a feral cat I fed at the high school where I taught. She came for the food, but wouldn’t let me near her. She started flirting with me, though, sitting up on the drinking fountain and looking at me, really making eye contact. When the winter holiday approached, I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her for several weeks without food, so I decided to trap her and bring her home. She went for the trap within 5 minutes! She adjusted quickly to being a pampered housecat. Today she is the friendliest of my cats. Everyone loves her!

Yo! Rocky here - and boy am I glad my human found me at the shelter. I’ve been around the block a time or two, and I don’t walk and move around so good ... but when I saw my human - I just knew if I kept at her heel and gave her my famous ‘Silver Fox stare,’ I could have a new home. It worked, I’ve got some cool digs, gaining strength and my mane is filling in. Now I want to help my other fur buds find a human of their own.

Brady

Male / 1.5 Years Domestic Short Hair

Male / 3 Years Ragdoll

Monkey showed up at our home one night and ran inside when we opened the door. None of our neighbors claimed him. He has a heart murmur but the vet said it is a mild one. He is named Monkey because he gets into EVERYTHING! He climbed on top of our flat screen TV. He opens cabinets and drawers. He pulls our clothes of our dresser drawers. He is teaching the older cats naughty tricks. He is fun and very loving. He loves to chase the laser, hang with his fellow rescues and chase Lillie all over the house.

Brady is very personable. And a real talker. He talks when he wants something to eat or even when asking permission to sit with me in my chair. A real charmer, quite the talker and loves people.

Alan

Tiny

Male / 9 Years Russian Blue

Female / 6 Years Tuxedo Cat

Hi! I’m Alan, named after the infamous BBC prairie dog. (https://youtu.be/ SNfQda8ceGs) My current roommate found me at the Woods Humane Society where I was living a solo-bachelor life in my very cool cat condo, which I scored because I was too energetic for the other cats. (I have a scar to prove it.) I have to say, after the papers were signed, my roommate scored, too -- not only am I incredibly handsome, but I have the unique ability to fit on any lap despite my 30-lbs physique, can carry a full-on conversation, and know how to tell time...according to my food schedule. I also really like listening to NPR, which makes me the best rescue pet ever. And there are more like me! (Even if they didn’t want to hang out with me at the Society...)

Let me paint you a picture of my studio kitty...my girlfriend adopted a rescue cat and called me. You have to see her sister!” November 4, 2013, we took one look at her and she was purrfect except for her name, “Wednesday”. My folks had a tuxedo cat 50 years ago. My Mom started filling out the paperwork immediately. I said, “Are you sure?” She replied, “Yes, that’s Tiny!” We brought her home to my Dad and they bonded instantly. My Dad has since passed but we treasure Tiny everyday.

Mr. squeaks

Libby Vierra

Male / 14 Years American Short Hair

Female / 11 Years American Short Hair

He was adopted from Santa Maria human society last January. He is 14 and has tons of energy. He wakes up his human every day, walks on a leash and enjoys playing in the boxes the wine comes in. He is a very special senior kitty.

Libby is the queen of rescued pets. At 5 weeks old she was rescued from a parking lot and came to live with me. 11 years later she is quite the diva. She spends her days basking in the sun, sleeping and waiting on her human, yeah that’s me, to feed and play with her. She lives quite the life now, but knows not all pets are as lucky. She would be honored to be their Spokescat!

Marcalene

Emma

Female / 7 Years Tortoiseshell American Short Hair

Female / 13 Years Norwegian Forest Cat

Marcalene was being given away in front of a grocery store and was the last of her litter. She’s posing here with her best friend Thor . She was weaned too early and doesn’t get along with other cats but does enjoy cleaning Thor’s ears and hanging out with him. She’s an avid lizard huntress and is the sole reason there’s a lizard catch and release jar always around in our house.

I adopted Emma from your shelter last October. She was 12 years old and had been there for nine months. Thanks to your wonderful staff she was available to adopt. I think Emma is a perfect example of why people should adopt a senior pet. She’s loving and playful and gets along very well with my son’s cattle dog. I feel very fortunate to have found her.

Conor

Rufus

Male / 7 Years Lynx Point

Male / 18 Years Siamese Mix

Conor was named Hunk at the Santa Maria Animal Shelter when we adopted him. We changed his name to an old family name (Conor McDermott, 10th Century Chieftan in Co Roscommon, Ireland). He is a very friendly cat, and the elderly lady a few doors down looks forwards to his visits for cat treats.

He is proof that indoor cats live full, happy, long lives. He is still very active and healthy. He’s my best friend.

Luci

Pepper

Male / 1 Year Domestic

Female / 2 Years Calico

Luci was adopted by us as a kitten when no one else could care for him. He’s turned out to be an amazing character. He’s full of drama and very vocal. He loves to fetch rubber bands.

We adopted pepper when she was just 3 months old . She is an incredible hunter and protector of children . She follows us down to soccer practices and watches for hours.

Midnight

Skyline

Female / 3.5 Years Mixed

Male / 1.5 Years Tabby

Midnight was rescued with her brother from Santa Ynez Valley Humane. She is 24 pds and very happy, fat and sassy to say the least. She is 3 and 1/2 yrs old and very well loved and loves to lounge in “her” chair. She sleep with a small blue bear and carries it from room to room all the while meowing while its in her mouth. She wants you to know she is coming with “bear”.

We rescued Skyline from a pet shelter when he was two months old. Skyline can relate to other pets looking for their forever home. He wants every animal to know that there is a loving family out there, and that every animal deserves to be loved.

Kitty aka Flower

Snickers

Female / 1.5-2 Years Brown Tabby

Female / 15 Months Domestic Short Hair/Mix

We were told she was rescued from a kill center in Bakersfield by the Santa Maria Humane Society and we adopted her at Petco in Santa Maria this February. She is the sweetest cat and has done a excellent job training “us” to cater to her every desire!! Absolutely love her. A pleasure to come home too.

Adopting Snickers from the Santa Maria Humane Society has enlivened our home with warmth and love. She has been a delightful addition to our family. Please consider adopting a pet to fulfill that void in your life.

Bentley

Bailey

Male / Years Ragdoll

Female / 15 Years Ragdoll

Bentley is the sweetest and most affectionate cat in the world. He believes that if more people would bring pets into their lives, they would be happier and the world would be a more purr-fect place for all of us!

Bailey was adopted from the Humane Society in Santa Maria, California and has been our loyal friend since. She has a mellow personality and is very beautiful. She has gracefully endured our moves from California to Florida, back to Santa Maria, then to Texas and back to Santa Maria again. She has been a sweet addition to our lives.

Twig

Bug

Female / 1.5 Years Domestic Short Hair

Female / 1.5 Years Domestic Medium Hair

Twig aka Zena came into our lives after I had visited with her several times while volunteering at our beautiful state of the art Santa Maria Valley Humane Society. Not only is Twig beautiful but she is a unique kitty, as she loves to play fetch with the ball and will dribble it along the floor like a soccer pro. My husband and I love her companionship, playful and sweet personality.

Bug aka Izzy formerly a guest of the SMVHS is a constant companion, full of curiosity and playfulness. She loves playing in the water with her paws and likes to drink from the faucet. She has the sweetest way of mewing to communicate with us. She welcomes all of our guests or newcomers and takes an interest in them throughout their visit. She’s a sweetheart!

Panda

Male / 4 Years Domestic Short Hair

Male / 5 Years Domestic Short Hair

Sir Purr (black male) and Daisy (tabby female) are littermate rescues from SMVHS. Sir Purr is a perfect spokescat because he is a loving and grateful kitty. He purrs loudly, makes biscuits and plays fetch to show his gratitude. Daisy was not adopted at the same time and missed her brother tremendously. About a month later, I had to reunite them and they are nearly inseparable to this day.

Panda was a resident at SMVHS who knew how to pick his people. I planned on adopting a female kitten but this little boy decided to be super frisky and grab a hold of his future grandpa (my Dad) from the top of a cat tree. It was love at first kitten ambush. He has since unexpectedly lost his grandpa so is an extra special part of the family. He loves to talk but kind of honks instead of meows. He loves being around humans and being part of any conversation!

Ozzie

Layla

Male / 8 Years Domestic Short Hair

Female / 13 Years Domesic Long Hair

Ozzie was rescued from a field when he was ~8 weeks old, but looked only 3 weeks old. He weighed less than 2 lbs. But today he is a healthy beautiful cat. Ozzie is dignified and refined with graceful long legs and soulful eyes. Although he is shy, everyone who meets him (including other cats) loves him because he is so sweet and gentle. Ozzie is the perfect spokescat because he epitomizes how a scrawny emaciated kitten can grow into a beautiful, loving, and truly precious pet.

Layla was the older cat at the animal shelter very mellow. We arrived and she stepped out of her cage onto my son’s wheelchair. We went in for a kitten, but we got Layla who was 10 years old. I’ve always had dogs but Layla showed us how loving and awesome cats were. We later adopted 2 more cats. Layla enjoys relaxing in the house and in the sunlight.

Gumbo

Neptune

Male / 15 Years Domestic Short Hair

Male / 2 Years Cutest Tabby Ever!

Gumbo is the perfect Spokescat for rescued pets everywhere because he was rescued as a baby kitten with a broken tail, respiratory problems, and bad teeth. When I first saw him as a 10 month-old at the Humane Society, he reached his paws through the cage, gave me a silent meow, and my heart was smitten. He has given me and my family more joy than I can imagine, and in many ways, he saved me. Although he’s an old boy now with some teeth removed and that bent tail, he loves people, plays fetch, and enjoys everyday of life.

Our little family moved to Santa Maria in 2016 to start a new life, and Neptune has been the glue to our family since we adopted him two years ago. It was love at first sight! He gets lovingly wrapped in a blanket in his kitty tree when he sleeps all day, and he gets to roam in the hood with his neighbor cats each night. He responds in affectionate purrs and drools. Life is good for our little tiger, so we spoil him with scarves, espresso, and trips to Paris (via photo editing software). Notre chat, notre amour!

Cali

Monet

Female / 1 Year ?

Male / 15 Years Flame Point

Even with unusual markings they are all beautiful inside and out.

Monet may not be an artist, but he has any talents. He exhitits dog-like behavior, and usually comes when he’s called. He loves people, which makes him a good judge of character with his “cat scanning” methods. Monet was found wandering near the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Ivan in 2004. We adopted him when he was about 7 months old. He later moved 2200 miles to become a Cool California Cat. (He has since lost his Southern “meow.”) Monet is a “serious” cuddler in our family, and like a fine wine, he just gets better with age.

Teddy

Pita

Male / 10 Years Tuxedo

Female / 3 Years Ragdoll

Teddy was abandoned as a kitten but after he found his hooman daddy he developed quite the personality. He has serious language skills, and they have long, intellectual conversations every night while daddy reads the news with Teddy stretched across his lap. Teddy is especially interested in stories about environmental and wildlife protection.

Pita has a unique personality. She lives with three dogs and hates all of them! Pita loves hanging out on top of the turtle cage. Pita’s mother was dropped off at a ranch in an unfortunate state. She and her siblings were born there. Pita looked very different from all of her black and white siblings.

Riley

Bill

Female / 4 Years Short Hair

Male / 9 Years Short Hair

Riley was found as a kitten abandoned at the Nipomo library and has been a great addition to our home. She is a no nonsense kind of gal who lets you know who and what she likes and doesn’t like, while keeping her kitten like playfulness.

Bill was a stable cat who thought he was Bronco Billy and could ride the horses with and without riders. He needed another occupation, so joined us. He is the top cat around here, and has become the dog whisperer for our new rescue Hula, who is now learning the mysteries of the feline world.

Smokey aka Sir Wellington

Sunny

Male / 5 Months Turkish Angora

Male / 2 Years Domestic Long Hair

Mr. Sir Wellington was adopted by our family from the Santa Maria Humane Society! He is the perfect spokesman because he’s friendly, outgoing, and the ladies like him! He’s a mover, groover and will capture anyone’s heart. He was a shelter favorite because of his fun loving personality! Sir Wellington says, “Save your wallet and open your hearts because us adopted pets will be your best friend.”

I was recently adopted from the Santa Maria Humane Society so I have a very good understanding of what it’s like to be a lonely pet looking for my forever home. I would like to be the Spokescat because I am a good public speaker who meows all the time! I will get my point across to save my shelter friends lives.

William and Kate

Pita

Male / 5 Months Stray

Female / 3 Years Ragdoll

Rescued from being turned in to an overcrowded kill shelter in LA. Had no idea they were so stunning. I just knew standing in line nothing was coming out. They were strays fed by a tenant. They now have a lovely home and their Royal name came true for them.

Pita is a very spunky cat. She lives with 2 other cats and 3 dogs. She loves to watch the fish and the turtle in the tank all the time!

Lillie

Bullseye

Female / 4 Years Domestic Short Hair

Male / 4 Years Orange Tabby

Lillie was abandoned at night in our area. She and her brother found a home with us. She has a flaw in her eye that does not effect her vision. Lillie has one blue eye and one green eye. Her brother is Bullseye, who was hit by a car before finding our home. Both are healthy and happy now.

Bullseye and his sister Lillie were abandoned near our home. He was hit by a car before we found him on our porch. He lost half his knee cap and the pads on his foot. He had to have seventeen staples applied to close his back leg alone. The vet said he was the most gentle cat they had ever treated. He was in his casts for two months and became very spoiled. He and his sister Lillie now have a safe and secure home. They bring us joy and laughter every day. Please rescue a shelter animal.”

Austin

Pirate

Male / 2.5 Years Grey Tabby Mix

Male / 10 Years Tabby

Austin was one day old and was very sick when we got him. He would have been put down that day had he gone to the pound. We took in Austin, his litter mates, his mother and his aunt. The vet treated all of the cats based on the sickest one. They all survived. Austin is a very sweet and social boy. He loves everyone and is not shy. He is really big and has very unusual markings and blue eyes. His only bad habit is that he loves to tear up toilet paper and run with it.

Pirate was born in a flower pot on our property. He was born with only one eye but that does not slow him down. He is a feisty little guy but not a fighter. He is very brave and funny. He likes to wear hats. He jumps straight up in the air while walking around like he’s attached to a bungee. He hangs out with us while we work in the yard. He was named by our dear late friend and neighbor, Darrel McGee. Please rescue a needy pet like Pirate. He brings us joy and love every day.

Duke

Spokesdog

Male / 4 Mixed I adopted duke from a shelter and found out he was adopted and returned by the same family twice. Duke is the smartest most easy going dog I have ever had and for the life of me I don’t know how anyone could give him away. It’s taken years to gain his trust and I’m so glad to be his doggy mama!

2019 Contest Entries Murphy

Chiquita

Male / 11 Years? Chow, Spaniel, Bit Bull, Chihuahua, Poodle, Blue Tick Hound

Female / 10 Years Chihuahua

Murph was on his last day at a kill shelter and was rescued by The Dexter Society. He is the kindest soul. Everyone he meets says that he is special, but then all our furrends are special! He has his own website to promote adoptions also, www.Furrends. org

When Chiquita was a puppy she was abused by the people who had her. They gave her drugs and treated her badly. She was rescued from from these people and adopted.by my brother before she was one year old. She had a very happy and healthy life with him. I adopted both her and her daughter when my brother passed away. I am making sure they are happy and healthy”

Jake

Katie & Betty Boop

Male / 7 Years Golden Retriever

Female / 3 Years King Charles Cavaliers

Jake was from an accidental litter. He is very kind to his human friends as well as the other dog and three cats he lives with. He allows the cats to clean his ears even though you can tell he doesn’t enjoy it. Always the gentleman (gentledog) he never barks at other people when on walks and always lets kids pet him. He even tolerates when one of his best human friends Titus puts hot wheels cars on his back and for a short while is transformed into a fuzzy trailer.

They were both rescues and have adjusted to new environment well. They are smart and loving and enjoys socializing at dog parks.

Male / 7 Years German Shepherd Mix Zeppelin was a feral dog that was found in the mountains of Ventura 4 years ago. It took a woman 3 months to catch him and it took me a day to realize he was meant to be mine. Zeppelin has been through so much - being shot, hit by a car, and running wild - and he remains a tough dog to this day. He’s gone from a fearful dog to a sweet, goofy, playful, water loving, and mom loving dog. Never give up on your rescues, their love is all worth it in the end!

https://smvhs.org/adopt/

The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is open for adoptions Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Visit in person to meet our animals, or search our website for upto-date animal profiles.

Male / 4 Years German Shep/Pit Bull/Husky/Rhodesian Mix but he’s Handsome!

8

| Friday, October 4, 2019 | 2019 Spokesdog & Spokescat | Santa Maria Times

Miss Luna is the perfect Spokesdog for rescued pets everywhere because she was the result of an accidental litter of an unaltered female and a stray. She came to us as a rescue before being left at a shelter at 10 weeks old. Luna has been vaccinated, chipped, and spayed at the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society. She is an advocate for spaying and neutering of all pets!! “Do not breed, rescue instead!” Love, Luna Terrones

Mr. Hercules is the perfect Spokesdog for rescued pets everywhere because he himself is a rescue pet! We found a man in a parking lot with a litter of unwanted puppies found on his land. He was “getting rid of them”. Hercules has been chipped, vaccinated, and neutered at the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society. He is the member of a loving family who proves that “unwanted” can turn into “can’t live without” when you rescue a pet. “Rescue dogs Rule!” Love, Hercules Terrones

Casper

Pike

Male / 14 Years Terrier Mix

Male / 10 Years Lhasa Apso

Casper is a fun loving dog who likes to go hiking, sightseeing and traveling with me. We have been to carmel, santa cruz, Morro Bay, San Francisco , Santa Barbara .

I still remember the first day I layed eyes on Pike at DAWG (Dog Adoption & Welfare Group) in Goleta, CA.. It was love at first sight! He is the biggest love bug. His favorite pastimes include eating (just about anything), giving kisses and toe licking (that’s right... he loves to lick your toes!). He is such a happy boy & always gets lots of attention at the doggie park (from fellow canines & humans). Love is fur-ever!

Saura

Maverick

Female / 2 Years Olde English Bulldogge

Male / 2 Years Husky Mix

Saura’s the perfect spokesdog because she entered our lives after the loss of a long time fur baby and has kept us on our toes ever since. Saura loves humans and fellow dogs. She’s friendly, loyal, devoted to our family and loves the outdoors. We love and recommend the SMV Humane Society, they helped spay and chip our girl. Thank you for your consideration.

Maverick makes the best out of each situation he is in. He was happy during his time at the Santa Maria Humane Society and loves life in his furrever home. As a spokesdog he would like to draw attention to a scary issue. Xylitol poisoning. A couple months after being adopted, Maverick ate a bottle of melatonin pills which contained deadly (for dogs) xylitol. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener used in many sugar free gums, peanut butters, and other common human products. He is a survivor of xylitol poisoning. Maverick would like every dog owner to check labels to save dogs.

Maverick

ROO Thomas

Male / 2 Years Husky Mix

Female / 7years Cattle Dog Mix

Maverick makes the best out of each situation he is in. He was happy during his time at the Santa Maria Humane Society and loves life in his furrever home. As a spokesdog he would like to draw attention to a scary issue. Xylitol poisoning. Maverick would like every dog owner to check labels to save dogs.

This is a painting created by me/owner of our amazing and goofy cattle dog ROO. She sees the world as a wonderous place and loves all thing furry and person. A socialite and a sprinter”

Coco

Lily

Female / 7 Years Pomeranian Mix

Female / 1 Year Rottielab Mix

Coco lived in the Fresno streets in the past. She was taken into a foster family and lived with many other dogs. She now found her home in the central coast where she can visit the beach often and loves to run in the sand while greeting other dogs and humans. She has her Pomeranian mix roommate to hang out with all day. She loves to jump into laps to be pet and get belly scratched. The most friendly dog you’ve seen who’s always smiling.

Lily was a rescue from a large litter. It was love at first site! From the moment we put her in the car she was attached to my 6 year old daughter. She followed her to the bathroom and everywhere else from that day forward. She is a big part of our family and we can’t imagine life without her! It is possible to make a difference in the life of an animal that needs rescuing. More importantly it will change yours for the better!

Emmy

Male / 1 yr Australian Shepard, Min Pin, Beagle mix

Female / 11 English Bulldog

Frankie was rescued from a hoarding situation as a puppy. We adopted him at 2 months old and he has been the best puppy ever!! He has a great personality and loves every dog he meets!!

Emmy would make the perfect spokesdog because she came from a troubled background of dog fighting and was able to be saved and given a second chance at a happy life with a loving home and family. She, like many of the animals in the humane society, didn’t hate the world for the actions of some horrible people. She was able to trust in people again and enjoy a family that loves her no matter of her past.

Bella

Khloe

Female / 11 mos Corgi/German Shepherd

Female / 7months Husky Mix

Bella is a free spirited, very smart pup, and everybody is her friend! When we adopted her, we learned that she had already been in 3 different homes. She immediately stole our hearts, and we are committed to giving her the love and patience every animal deserves.

She was adopted at just 6months old and has been nothing but happy and playful and a great addition to our family. She loves running, eating apples and talking!

Harley

Jack

Female / 22 months Rhodesian Ridgeback

Male / 2 German Short Haired Pointer

Harley is one amazing Rhodesian. She loves everyone and is super strong and athletic but extremely gentle. Harley enjoys playing and running, but lounging in her teepee is her all time favorite place to lounge. Her love for all people makes her so special and such a sweet girl to spend time with... not to mention Harley is a georgeous girl that gets lots of attention when out for a walk or playing at the dog park.Hope Harley wins the hearts of all by being chosen for the spokesdog for rescue pets everywhere!

Since Jack has been rescued he has explored and learned so much! He has truly realized his full potential through exposure to bird hunting, hiking and swimming!

China

Roscoe

Female / 5 months Yorkshire Terreir

Male / 7 White German Shepherd

She listens well, has a great personality and is the smallest, biggest watch dog!!

Roscoe was rescued from Lompoc CAPA so as a rescue himself, he wants to help others. He’s smart, good looking, and so very loving. He is my guard dog and protects his rescue sisters Daisy and Belle (a dog and cat).

Sierra

Hana

Female / 10 Lab/Pitbull

Female / 10 Cocker Spaniel

Sierra was adopted from the County Animal Services shelter by our family when she was 5 months old. She’s a wonderful family dog and is so sweet. Even at 10 years old she continues to be a fun, playful dog! She loves our 3 year old daughter and is very gentle and sweet with her. She is an example of the wonderful dogs available for adoption every day!

I received Hana from a couple parting ways when she was 2 years old . She is a perfect Spokesdog because she has accepted her new life and moved on to become a beautiful loving dog. Great with all kids and other dogs. She loves chasing balls, riding in the motorhome and camping.

We adopted Herbie from the Santa Maria Humane Society 1 year ago. He is an amazing example of why you would want to rescue a dog. He is super sweet, smart and very, very cute! His favorite past time is hanging out at tasting rooms people watching on the patio. Herbie is dedicated to advocating for shelter animals everywhere we go!

Bodie is a gentle giant, Who loves making friends everywhere he goes. While he loves making friends with adults, and other dogs, his heart belongs to the children in his life and those he meets during outings. Before he came into our lives he was homeless, emaciated, and full of parasites. Bodie’s original owners were homeless and had their children removed for neglect. it was said that he was the children’s caretaker. His love, playfulness, and protective nature make him the perfect spokes dog for the Humane Society. We are thankful to have him in our lives.

Dixie

Max

Female / 2 Years Chihuahua

Male / 1 Year Bearded Collie Mix

Dixie was a scared little doggie very quiet and timid until we brought her home her little personality came out she used to be afraid of car rides now she can’t wait to go she really is a cute little sweet girl

He has the right personality for a spokesman

Spencer

Bailey

Male / 13 Years Dalmatian

Female / 8 Years Boxer/Springer Spaniel

Spencer was found loose on the streets of San Diego in 2007. He kicked around in the Animal Control system until he was fostered to Monterey County Dalmatian Rescue where we adopted him from. He is our faithful, beloved Spotty Dog, and he is doing his best to help raise two energetic Dachshund puppies as the Big Brother.

Bailey was born in West Virginia and rescued by her pack family in the winter of January 2011. She quickly rose to the ranks among her countryside companions as the alpha female, chased delivery truck drivers and hunted small game for her own delight. Bailey came with her pack family to California and now relishes her twice daily walks and occasional off leash sprints for exercise. Bailey has come full circle and lived life in every setting and every season. Now she prefers to share love with everyone, except other females, still at the top of her game, retired.

Valentino

Emma

Male / 10 Years Shih Tzu

Female / 13 Years English Springer Spaniel

He is a charmer. Everyone falls in love with him at first sight. He welcomes and treats kindly the many senior dogs we have rescued! He’s athletic and knows how to relax. He has no idea how handsome he is. He is a head turner and greets you with a head tilt that melts your heart.

Emma was given up once, but found her happy home. She is mature yet plays like a puppy, and she loves her second family more than anything (except Chuck It!).

Clover

Sophie

Female / Probably 14 Years, now passed Little White Dog

Female / 10 Years Shih Tzu

Clover was a horribly abused and a neglected stray suffering severe corneal abrasion making cataract surgery not an option. She was emaciated and later fell victim to seizures. She spent the last two years with us recovering to be the well fed and good looking little girl in this picture getting several drops to alleviate the discomfort and going on fun filled walks and runs and enjoying the other dogs in our family who sensed her needs. She loved her last two years and is a testament to the needs and power of rescue and love.

While it’s true Sophie hasn’t really ever had a bad day, she certainly has a gift of looking out for all the other dogs. She alerts us when a dog is left behind a door. She makes sure the little deaf dog comes with us to feed the fish or eat. She’s has a naturally vigilant heart. For the people in the house, she’s the first in our laps and has a very therapeutic effect on us. She’s a treasure.

Roco

Female / 12 Coton

Male / 2 yr Toy Poodle / York

Rays is a rescue dog from a reputable breeder. She has spent some time in the breeders house and has been fed and treated well. She has had many beautiful puppies and I adopted her when she was 10. She is now getting the attention she craves and deserves. She is an example of a dog who makes a wonderful pet for a Senior who literally wants a best friend. She loves her new home her canine friends her walks and rides in the car. She is a wonderful breed and I call her my best friend.

We adopted our dog at SMVHS instead of taking a offer from a neighbor for a new puppy because we visited animal shelters and saw how many dogs and cats needed a home. Now he is part of the family and play/love him everyday and glad we visited these shelters first.

Sierra

Eddie-Blanco

Female / 4 Greyhound Shepherd

Male / 8 years old Bichon/Maltese

Sierra was rescued through Old Yeller Rescue Ranch. A Facebook fund raiser was established to rescue her mom and 7 siblings from a dangerous situation in New Mexico. She is the runt of the litter and has eyes that look into your soul. She would be a good Spokesdog because she has a gentle appeal that draws everyone to her. She is a living testament of a better life with a forever home. She would be honored to be selected. We appreciate the support this event brings to dogs like Sierra. She’s a peach!

Eddie is very outspoken as he displays daily as a loyal protector. He is so loving, caring and a support pet to our family. If I feel down, I just have to look at his little face and he lifts my spirits. Wherever we go, Eddie goes. He is right there by our side and is very much an important part of our family.

Pebbles

Charlie

Female / 4 Years Malti/Poo

Male / 3 Lab Mix

She herself is a rescue. She is a very loving pet and she means the world to our family.

Charlie came to us through SMVHS one year ago. He went from skinny, backyard boy to healthy, happy, beach-going best friend. He loves the ball, his family, dinner time, his doggy pool, his cat buddy (also a SMVHS veteran), cuddling and his growing pile of bark box toys. We could not be happier and it’s all thanks to SMVHS and their hard work in finding a perfect fit and generosity in giving this good boy a better life.

Benicio

Pinkie

Male / 6 years old Siberian Husky

Female / 8 Mut

Benicio has his own rescue kitty and would encourage others to find happiness too.

Pinkie was rescued by my dad after she was tired, thin and dehydrated. She was abandoned and left to fend for herself. She has learned to love and has been loved and become a part of our family.

Baxter

Dottie

Male / 11 Goldendoodle

Female / 9 years Rat Terrier Dachsund mix

Baxter was raised by my mother and given to my family and is living a full life. He has enriched our lives on a daily basis. With 2 knee operations under his belt, Baxter enjoys nothing more than letting his hair blow in the wind.

She is the love of our life. We adopted her when she was 6 years old and while we do not know what her past life was like, we do know she is now happy and healthy and loves camping and walks on the beach.

Bert

Cramer

Male / 9.5 Years Miniature Schnauzer

Male / 3.5 Years Border Terrier MIx

Bert was found wandering the streets with another Terrier mix in McAllen, TX. He was 11 pounds, burnt orange in color, partially hairless, bony, flea-bitten and scared to death when we began to foster him. Once he was well enough, we were able to adopt him. He is now a strong, robust, and beautiful companion. Sounds like a great representative for a wine to me!!

Cramer was found in San Antonio, TX. He was alone and scared. When we adopted him, we knew it would take some time-just like a fine wine. After 5 months, much care and love-he is now a sweet, full-bodied and robust addition to our family.

Shakima

Clover

Male / 4.5 Years Doberman

Female / 1 Year Boxer

I’m not a rescue but my mom rescued 3 cats and another dog from Santa Ynez Humane Society. One day I looked out and saw him in the wine cask and ever since he is in there at least once a day or more. He takes his bones in with him and has even been know to bury his bone in there for later. What better picture for a wine label?

This is Clover Girl. She was rescued from a shelter in Santa Maria in March 2019. She was found abandoned in a field near Telephone Road in Orcutt. She’s the perfect Spokesdog because even though she had a rough beginning, she approaches everyone with a smile, as you can see. Everyone who meets her falls in love with her. She has a great story and motivates others to explore rescuing as an option. Everyone says she was lucky to find me, but I was the one who lucked out on finding her. Clover’s favorite activity: Visiting wineries to sniff grapes!

Monty

Midna

Male / 2 Years Basset hound

Female / 4 Years Border Collie mix

Monty’s momma, Polly, was hit by a car. Through basset hound rescues she came to Daphneyland Basset Hound Rescue Ranch in Acton, California. The rescuers at Daphneyland didn’t know Polly was pregnant. They thought her distended tummy was from poor nutrition. When Polly was on the grooming table, she had her first puppy. Polly went on to have 11 more, sadly because of being hit by the car, only five survived. Monty is one of the five. Monty is a perfect spokesdog because he shows that any breed you are looking for can be found at a shelter.

Midna had been adopted twice and returned to the shelter before she found her forever home with me. Her previous adopter claimed she was aggressive and too energetic; due to being crated all day long with no outlet for all the pent up energy. I was warned that she also had the proclivity to jump 6ft fences. All of these things would have deterred most people but, like most shelter pets, I felt that Midna just needed some tender loving care and a chance to prove herself. I wouldn’t trade my time with her for anything in the world.

Kaylee

Georgia

Female / 8 Years Pitbull

Female / 4 Years Mixed Breed

We found Kaylee wandering Santa Maria 7 years ago, and even after reporting her found and posting about her through every avenue available, no one ever came to claim her. It seemed that she’d never been in a house before and didn’t know what to make of the toys offered. She has proven to be a wonderful dog and fantastic friend, changing some of the attitudes of people she’s met and their misconceptions about bully-type dogs. Kaylee is a testament that you shouldn’t judge a dog’s personality based on breed alone.

Georgia is full of love, loyalty, and curiosity. She alerted us quickly and loudly when her senior canine companion, Midnight, found himself immobile (his dew claw became stuck in his collar). Georgia leapt into action without hesitation. She is a canine hero.

Nero

Pete

Male / 9 Years 9 Months Labrador Retriever

Male / 10 Years Bichon Mix

Nero is a career change dog from Guide Dogs of America. We didn’t know when we adopted him, he was actually going to be rescuing us!

Pete was at SMHS for 10 weeks recovering from neglect. He’s a stellar individual, conscientious of others, strong willed, and has been schooling Yubitza, another SMHS former resident since picking out of the line-up a couple of years ago. Pete takes his time, is patient with children, and is incredibly grateful as are we to have him in our forever home. Pete stops into see Denise when he’s heading through Santa Maria, because he’s grateful. We are blessed to have this fine gentleman in our midst; the perfect Spokes Dog.

Jasper

Female / 5 Spanish Water Dog Mix

Male / 7 Australian Cattle Dog/Border Collie Mix

Yubitza is a model character; almost. She’s a bit of a Diva but in a good way. We are pretty sure she was dumped... for biting a child. She’s gotten her confidence back, shows other dogs how to play on the beach, is always friendly and grateful for love and respect. Her favorite thing to do is to walk and run on her beach. She is a good example of how caring for others and accepting being cared for can produce a genuine adoration for adoptions. We’ve adopted several animals over the years, Yubi is a catch... and she’s confident.

My beach-loving, frisbee and ball-obsessed, Idaho transplant is a rescue dog himself! In 2015, I adopted Jasper from the Idaho Humane Society when he was just three years old. From the time he came home, he’s brought nothing but joy and good fortune. He even lead me to my significant other; we met at the dog park here in Orcutt. Jasper is proof that dogs of all ages (puppies, adults, and seniors alike) can bring joy and love to someone’s life. All dogs deserve to find a happy home!

Mike Wazowski

Radar

Male / 8 Chihuahua

Male / 14 Rat Terrier

Mike has been living the shelter life for a while now, and has the scars to prove it. Yes, he lost an eye, but that hasnot slowed him down & he’s still a happy pup. Mike is one of those Chihuahuas who thinks he’s the size of a Rottweiler & has the attitude to match. But, he loves people & other small dogs. As of this writing, Mike Wazowski is still looking for his forever home. He is a favorite of the volunteers at SMVHS & that is why he is the perfect Spokesdog.

Radar adopted us :0) at the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society. His name is fitting for him because he is deaf, and when he feels he has lost track of anyone in our family, he finds the room you’re in, sticks his head in the doorway, looks at you, then leaves! Radar is an example of bravery and determination, as his sister passed away in the shelter. He picked himself up after being very down, and realized that he had found a family that would love him unconditionally. He is a senior, he is deaf and he is just perfect!

Stella

Hairy Porter

Female / 3 Mini Poodle Chihuahua Mix

Male / 5 Labrador Retriever

Stella found her forever home 3 years ago. She was a Valentine’s Day gift to her original owner, they were promised a hypoallergenic maltepoo but due to horrible allergies they had to quickly rehome her. Soon after, we met, and she’s been by my side since! We recently moved to Orcutt, and her favorite past time is hanging out at Presqu’ile getting pets from all the staff and guests. Her smile in this photo on the vineyard says it all! She is proof that even if your first family doesn’t work out, the right one is waiting for you!

“Porter” was raised as a service dog for a Navy veteran, but found himself in foster care when his owner passed away. He had gained a lot of weight during the time his owner was ill, and had been diagnosed with epilepsy prior to that. His medications made it difficult for him to walk. He needed a forever home that could provide the exercise, medical care and love he needed. He is now in great shape after getting regular walks; his seizures are well managed with medication. He is proof that second chances are worth the effort!

Oreo

Dexter

Male / 8 Shih Tzu

Male / 7 Corgie/pug

Oreo is a rescue from SMVHS, he is an example of resilience and strength. He was abandoned and survived horrendous weather conditions. He is adorable and his character and doggie personality are the best.

First, he is a rescue from woods, here locally. Second he is sweet, gentle and loving. He is cute and gentle. Yet very protective of me and our areas. Only barks when needed. Obeys what he is told...most of the time. Of course he has his own personality. And what personality doesn’t come with a little attitude. He truly is an ideal dog. Second, he saved me. Long story short, I wouldn’t be the man I am today if he wasn’t with me. The sad thing is, several years ago he broke his back halfway down. Of course at the wrong time in life. And if it wasn’t for some wonderful luck. We we’re both saved and he was fixed and he is now here with me every day. So why wouldn’t he be the best spokesdog? He had a hard life and not only got saved, saved his owner. And continues to make friends. And always has them leaving with a little smile.

Tyler

Vixen

Male / 8 Schnauzer Shih Tzu

Female / 6 Doberman Pincher

He was rescued from a kill shelter by an organization started by Jimmy Durante’s daughter and 3 other horse trainers. My daughter rides and chose him because I was a mess when Gracie from the SMHS died. Tyler was a nervous wreck so nervous and crazy. In 2 months he calmed down and now is a love bug. My other dogs make him feel welcome and he loves his big yard and sleeping on our bed. We love him.

She rescued us! Vixen is a tripod living her life to the fullest!

Audrey

LaLa

Female / 2 Years Queensland Heeler Mix

Female / 12 Years Havanese

Audrey is a rescue dog from the SLO Animal services . After losing my previous Queensland Heeler dogs to cancer I wasnt ready for a new dog right away, but after seeing another Red Heeler(mix) at the shelter I decided to go check her out. The shelter staff brought out a Blue Heeler mix pup along with the Red Heeler mix and the Blue Heeler pup and I formed an immediate connection and I adopted her. She goes with me almost everywhere and loves to go camping with the family.

LaLa was raised in a reputable kennel and not mistreated. He had some litters but the vet said she was in amazing health when so adopted her at age 10. She was quite frightened at the ordinary noises in a normal household but now is a 5 footer. She is never more than 5 feet away and she steals everyone’s heart because she is so incredibly cute. Ooo La La

Biscuit

Sis

Male / 12 Years Cockapoo

Female / 3 Years Rottweiler, Labrador, Shepard

Biscuit was adopted in 2011 but he rescued us. He is a protector, cuddler, companion and bacon connoisseur. He provides joy and compassion on a daily basis. He enjoys walks, truck rides and popcorn.

Sis was rescued from Santa Barbara Humane Society. She was sent to SB from Houston after Hurricane Harvey. She was a stray in Houston and was going to be euthanized but was save by a small rescue Adore. She is the sweetest most loving and happy dog.

Charlie

Maggie

Male / 3 Years Pit Bull

Female / 11 Years Tiny Toy Poodle

Charlie is the perfect spokesdog because he came from a rough beginning and now he is thriving! He came from the Santa Maria Animal Center and was dognapped but thankfully returned! He then had a wonderful foster family before I got him. He was very scared and insecure when he came to live with me, but his resilience has been amazing! He still gets nervous around strangers and loud noises, but has made and continues to make progress! He loves other dogs and is living his best life as a winery dog in Santa Maria!

Despite her small size, Maggie has tracked down and rescued abandoned kittens that our family brought in, bottle fed, and found homes for. She is even mama to one of them, a beautiful male tuxedo that we kept and named Bubba.

Hula

Sully

Female / 5 Years Lab Cross

Male / 9 Years Mastiff/Rottweiler Mix

Hula was adopted from the Santa Barbara HS shelter after spending time in the Fresno and Santa Maria shelters. She is a sweet and wonderful dog who deserves her third chance and we are happy to have her join our family.

Sully is a cancer survivor and a gentle giant rescued at the golden age of nine. A recent addition to our family he spends much of his days watching over our family and snuggling up to his people any chance he gets. Sully is a perfect representation of second chances and a heart full of love. Our hope is that he will be a lesson to all to consider giving a senior dog a home. He has taught us the true meaning of golden years.

Naomi Hood

Elliott

Female / 7 Years Long-haired Dachshund/Chihuahua Mix (Probably)

Male / 7 Years Westie-Mix (Probably)

Once a Chi-wiener puppy with epilepsy was born at a Rescue in Los Angeles. The woman who ran the Rescue asked her friend in Santa Maria to adopt the puppy because she was afraid no one else would want a special-needs dog. This friend immediately drove the 160 miles to retrieve the pup she immediately loved. True, Naomi had seizures for several months, but her new Mama held her and kept her safe every time, until Naomi’s meds were sorted out and she became seizure-free. Now Naomi lives happily while her Mama holds her just because they love each other.

Once there was a lonely, bedraggled little white dog at the Animal Shelter when a lady came in seeking a buddy for her Chi-wiener Naomi. She knew immediately that this dog would be perfect, and she named him Elliott after her favorite Cancer Center nurse. Elliott keeps Naomi company so neither of them gets lonely, and he loves his humans -- sitting on their laps and sleeping in their beds. Even though he was already six, Elliot has learned basic commands and the rhythms of the household. Adopt a Rescue Dog. They just might make the perfect addition to your

Flea

Charlie

Male / 5 years Am. Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever Mix

Female / 3 Kings Charles Cavalier

Flea was adopted from the county shelter in early 2014. This photo captures a rare moment of quiet reflection--he is a perpetual goofball! A perfect representative for bully breeds and mutts everywhere, Flea’s only mission in life is to spread joy and laughter. Flea is sweet, energetic, and sympathetic. Despite his intimidating stature, he captures hearts wherever he goes with his sense of humor and handsome face. My absolute best friend ever for 5 years, Flea can remind the public that a rescue pet is the truest friendship a human can experience.

Charlie lives with 2 other dogs and 3 cats. She is very energetic! She’s very loving, affectionate and LOVES to cuddle!

Toffee

Bella

Female / 11 years 3 months German Shepherd

Female / 1 1/2 Husky Mix

Toffee is the perfect example of how dogs live in the moment despite their circumstances, we are her third home. For the last 10 months we have fought to slow the decline of her back legs with underwater treadmill & acupuncture. Unfortunately, we are starting to lose the battle. Despite the changes Toffee experiences, she just finds another way to get up & walk, she never stops trying. The wheelchair allows her to get a better workout by walking farther while providing some support. She has taught me to focus on what I can do, not what I cannot.

Meet Bella! Bella was brought to SMVHS after being evacuated from a Ventura county shelter during the wildfires last fall. We adopted her just a few days later and she is now a full member of our family! She comes everywhere with us, and even has her own Instagram (@bella_the_husky0215). If you are thinking about adding a new furry member to your family, make sure to check out your local shelters :)

Great reasons to adopt a senior pet

Male / 11 yo Terrier Mix Bob is a GREAT dog. We got him from a rescue organization when he was about 4 months old. We discovered that it makes him happy to wear hats and have his picture taken. His first hat was a beret and even years later it brings him joy. It may seem a bit odd, but if you met him you would see it is true. He loves to go on walks, hang out with his cat and dog housemates, ride around on a golf cart and speak his mind.

Take care of their teeth: oral hygiene for cats and dogs

15

Just like humans, dogs and cats can have dental issues that affect their health. Your pet’s mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria, so it’s important to take care of their teeth. As soon as you adopt your pet, start brushing their teeth regularly. It may take a few weeks of training, but most animals get used to it quickly. Be sure to use toothpaste made for dogs or cats though, because human toothpaste with fluoride isn’t safe for them. You should also offer your pet lots of treats, toys and hard, crunchy foods that are designed to maintain their oral health. Some signs that your pet has dental issues include teeth with yellow or brown buildup, red and swollen gums, bad breath and difficulties eating. Be sure to have your pet’s teeth professionally cleaned by a veterinarian. A proper cleaning involves a full scaling and removal of plaque and tartar under general anesthesia, which can’t be performed by a groomer. Your pet can’t tell you if they have a toothache, so do them a kindness and take care of their teeth by feeding them hard kibbles, brushing their teeth and taking them to the vet regularly.

Santa Maria Times | 2019 Spokesdog & Spokescat | Friday, October 4, 2019 |

Heading to the local animal shelter to adopt a pet? Don’t look past the animal with soulful eyes and a grey muzzle. Here are some compelling reasons to adopt a senior pet instead of a young one. • They are what they appear to be. When you adopt an older cat or dog, you won’t be surprised about their eventual size or coat colour. What you see is what you get! Their personality will also be fully developed and is unlikely to change. • They (usually) come pretrained. You won’t need to spend hours teaching them how to act around people or where to go to the bathroom. Often, older pets have lived with a family before and know how to behave. • They love their downtime. While older cats and dogs still need their exercise, a senior pet will be happy to spend most of their time napping by your side. • They’ll be grateful. Senior cats and dogs seem to know intuitively that they’ve been given a second chance in a loving home. This translates to a deep bond with their new owners. Often, older cats and dogs are in good health and have many years left to enjoy. Unfortunately, they’re the least likely to be adopted from a shelter. By welcoming an older pet into your home, you’re not only gaining a loyal companion, you’re saving them from an unhappy life in a shelter.
