TEEN VOLUNTEERING

HOW TO GET THEM INVOLVED ‌According to a review published in 2014 by the Institute for Volunteering Research, teen volunteers demonstrate higher levels of well-being, personal development and social connectedness than their non-volunteer peers. This evidence suggests that getting your own teen involved in volunteering will provide them not only a chance to fill out their resumes, but also the opportunity to become happier, more well-rounded individuals.

efits that volunteer work affords them. Research reported on in the 2014 review indicates that teens that do volunteer work have higher self-esteem and resilience than those that don’t.

How to encourage teens to volunteer

One of the best ways to get teens to volunteer is to lead by example. This can mean volunteering yourself when you get the chance, or doing volunteer activities as a family, which has Why teens should the added advantage of promoting bonding and mutual respect volunteer between the family members Volunteering can promote involved. various aptitudes in teens such as leadership and communica- Where teens should tion skills, which will serve them volunteer well in their educational pursuits and on the job market. However, It’s most motivating for young there are also psychological ben- people when they can select vol-

unteer opportunities that align with their passions, interests and ambitions. There are a large number of potential places where teens can volunteer, including: Seniors’ residences Animal shelters Libraries Food banks Community centers It’s worth pointing out that not all volunteering opportunities require a long-term, ongoing commitment. Charity fundraisers like run-for-thecause events and community occasions like the town’s Easter parade often require volunteers for only one or two days. Volunteer experience invariably strengthens a young person’s resume; however, the real value of volunteering is emphatically the positive impact it has on others as well as on the volunteer.

Volunteering opportunities for seniors ‌Studies have shown that volunteering has a positive effect on seniors’ well-being and can even help stave off neurological problems associated with old age, including depression and dementia. If you’re a retiree looking to volunteer your time and skills, here are some ways you can give back to your community: 1. Offer pro bono services. One way to volunteer during your retirement is to use your professional skills to help people in need for free. For instance, if you used to be an accountant, you can volunteer to help low-income families or recent immigrants prepare their tax returns. If you used to be a lawyer, you can offer free legal assistance to groups in need. 2. Support causes you’re passionate about. Take advantage of your retirement years to get involved with activist movements that inspire you. Whether it’s campaigning for political candidates or writing letters advocating legislative changes, you’re sure to find plenty of ways to further the causes you’re passionate about.

3. Mentor children. One of the best ways to contribute to your community is to volunteer to tutor or mentor kids—especially those who may not receive the academic and emotional support they need at home—through local schools and educational programs. Working with children can be a great way to bridge the generation gap while making a substantial difference in a young person’s life. 4. Work with immigrant communities. Volunteer to help recent immigrants acclimatize to life in the United States. You can do things like help with job applications, child care and English language learning, or simply offer support and companionship as families adjust to their new country. For further volunteer opportunities, you can get involved with Senior Corps, a network of national service programs for Americans 55 and older. Find out more by visiting nationalservice.gov/ programs/senior-corps/whatsenior-corps.

Hancock Promise Campaign Passes $3.5 Million in Donations In only two years, the Allan Hancock College Foundation has secured over $3.5 million in cash and pledges to the Hancock Promise Fund, a permanent endowment ensuring the viability of the Hancock Promise scholarship program at the college. The total campaign goal is $10 million, which will ensure that firstyear tuition and fees are covered for local high school students in perpetuity. The Hancock Promise program guarantees that northern Santa Barbara County students can attend the college free of charge their first year immediately following their completion of high school. In the second incoming class in fall 2019, over 1,500 local students took advantage of the program—a 60 percent increase in high school graduates from northern Santa Barbara County coming to Hancock College over the last two years. “The faculty and staff at Allan Hancock College reject the idea that college attainment should be reserved for a select few, based on their family’s ability to pay tuition,”says Allan Hancock College Superintendent/ President Kevin G. Walthers.“We believe that we are changing the odds for our community by offering pathways into careers that allows young people to support themselves and a family on the Central Coast.” “The Hancock Promise is free for students but not for the college,”says Executive Director of College Advancement Jon Hooten.“So, we are raising funds from the communities we serve— from Santa Maria to Santa Ynez—to help fill the gaps and cover the costs of this important commitment to the young people in our region.” Nearly 200 local individuals, companies, foundations, and community organizations such as Rotary and Kiwanas clubs have contributed to the Hancock Promise Fund, including a $1 million commitment from Mechanics Bank (formerly Rabobank). The campaign is on-going as the college’s centennial year approaches in 2020-21. Major contributors to the campaign (with commitments over $30,000) include the Bartlett Family Foundation, the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation, the Mark and Dorothy Smith Family Foundation, PG&E Corporation Foundation, Mary and Ron Nanning, and the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation. Contributors with gifts over $15,000 include AERA Energy, PG&E Company, the Roy and Ida Eagle Foundation, Santa Maria Kiwanas 4 Kids, the Murphy Family Foundation, and Union Bank. In total, fifty-three percent of high school graduates in northern Santa Barbara County this past year enrolled at Hancock College in fall 2019. Enrollments of Hispanic, low income, and first generation students are also up significantly over the last two years.

Promise Student Seeks to Serve Santa Maria Community Lupita Ríos has a big heart for her community, and she’s attending Hancock College to find solutions to the social problems she has experienced firsthand. The Allan Hancock College student was born and raised in northern Santa Maria, and her life followed a path familiar to many families in the area. She attended Robert Bruce Elementary and participated in the Boys and Girls Club after-school programs across the street. As a junior high student, Lupita had an important role model—her oldest sister—who demonstrated by example that college was a possibility for her younger siblings. Witnessing this put Lupita’s life on a new trajectory. Lupita developed into a leader among her 2,700 peers at Pioneer Valley High School. She was elected president of the Future Leaders of America student government organization and helped organize a student leadership conference. She also became an advocate for solutions to social problems facing Santa Maria’s disadvantaged communities. After the 2018

enrollment jump from last year. Additionally, Lompoc and Cabrillo high schools, as well as Santa Ynez Valley Union High School, all saw enrollment jumps this year. “In only two years, the Hancock Promise has thrown open the doors and provided amazing opportunities for hundreds more local students,”says Executive Director of College Advancement Jon Hooten. “As we talk to these inspiring young people, we’re learning that many would not have attended college at all if the Hancock Promise were not available.” First-year student John

When Lupita first heard about the Hancock Promise program and that she could begin college without the burden of paying tuition and fees, she was interested. She signed up for Hancock’s summer classes after high school graduation. She loved the experience so much that she registered as a full-time Hancock Promise student in fall 2018 to major in political science. It didn’t take long for her leadership abilities to emerge at Hancock as well. She is active in student government and serves in leadership positions via various student clubs. Lupita is also becoming

more involved in offcampus leadership. Last spring, she was a volunteer coordinator for the successful launch of the Santa Maria Open Streets festival, and currently serves on the board of Corazon del Pueblo, the new cultural and arts center on west Main Street in Santa Maria. She also worked on the successful city council campaign of Gloria Soto and honored by the Santa Barbara County Action Network for her outstanding contributions to the community.

and providing hope for individual students and their families,”Hooten says. “We must ensure that this promise is permanent and, regardless of the whims of state funding, that our community can continue this promise forever.”

According to second-year student Staci Tilley, the Hancock Promise is saving her thousands of dollars in student debt while she prepares to transfer to a four-year university and study neuropsychology.

To qualify for the Hancock Promise, students are required to have graduated from a local high school, enroll at Hancock for at least 12 units (including a math or English course), complete their financial aid forms, and submit an educational plan to the college.

“Clearly, the funding provided by the Hancock Promise is changing the odds in our community

Major Gift to Benefit Hancock Nursing Programs Allan Hancock College received a generous gift from the estate of the late Barbara Andrastek, a Santa Maria resident who bequeathed $380,000 to the college’s nursing programs.

“We are always deeply moved when a member of the community leaves a gift for Hancock students in their estate plans,”said Executive Director of College Advancement Jon Hooten. “Mrs. Andrastek was never a student at Hancock, but her legacy will live on through generations of nursing students here.” Andrastek passed away at the age of 84 on March

23, 2018. The gift from her estate was placed in a permanent endowment that will benefit Hancock’s nursing programs into perpetuity. The college’s nursing programs currently plan to use the funds to further develop skills simulation and clinical support for students in Hancock’s Licensed Vocation Nursing (LVN), Certified Nursing Assisting (CNA) and Registered Nurs ing (RN) programs. “The generous donation to our nursing programs will be thoughtfully used to promote and support

clinical student learning in the skills lab setting,”said Hancock LVN Program Director and Instructor Bonny Friedrich.“This has been an area of significant need, and the gift will enable the faculty to address this important aspect of student learning.” Hancock’s nursing programs are fully approved and accredited by the State of California and allow graduates to pursue careers in hospitals, clinics, physicians’offices, research study programs, and more.

“Santa Maria is a really hard-working community,” Lupita said.“People don’t always have time to stay informed about what’s going on the city that might affect their lives. I’m going to college to inform, educate, and defend our community in any way that I can.” 00 1

FAMILY SERVICE AGENCY:

HELPING BUILD STRONG FAMILIES More than 1,250 families

in Lompoc and the Santa Maria Valley received intensive case management, mental health counseling, and educational programs for parenting, healthy relationships, and other life skills through Family Service Agency (FSA) and Santa Maria Valley Youth & Family Center (SMVYFC) last year. In addition, FSA-SMVYFC provided more than 8,500 families with information and referrals to community resources.

DID YOU HEAR THE NEWS? Lompoc’s Dorothy Jackson Family Resource Center Relocates To better accommodate the needs of families, Family Service Agency’s (FSA) well-known Dorothy Jackson Family Resource Center (DJFRC) has moved to a larger facility at 646 North H Street in Lompoc. “The Dorothy Jackson Center has been a community resource for over 25 years,” said Program Manager, Ashleigh Erving. “Our new location offers improved facilities for our parenting and healthy relationship classes as well as an opportunity to collaborate with other local agencies.” The DJFRC is the only program of its kind in Lompoc that advocates for families and individuals who face poverty, homelessness, family violence, substance abuse, and unemployment. Through outreach, basic needs support, education, and counseling services, the program empowers at-risk individuals and families to attain self-sufficiency. Santa Maria Youth & Family Center Undergoes Needed Improvements Thanks to funding from the City of Santa Maria, the Youth & Family Center located at 105 North Lincoln Boulevard will get needed facility upgrades, including a new roof and HVAC units. “We are extremely grateful for the city’s assistance,” said Steve DeLira, Deputy Executive Director. “This building has become a trusted community resource for mental health and family support services. These improvements will enhance our ability to serve Santa Maria families.” The Center will remain open through the improvements, which are expected to run through the end of the year.

Ana and her children are managing on their own thanks to assistance from Family Service Agency.

One’s Family’s Story of Resiliency family advocate also connected her to Domestic Violence Solutions and employment resources. After a few months, Ana’s depression decreased and her self-esteem improved as she moved forward with positive actions for herself and her family. FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES include case management, parent education and leadership development. Family-centered, strengths-based case management helps families attain self-sufficiency. TRAUMA-INFORMED

MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING is one-onone therapy that includes crisis intervention as well as treatment for unresolved trauma, depression, anxiety, substance use, and self-harming behavior. GUADALUPE PARENT ACADEMY at the Little House by the Park focuses on parent involvement. About us

Veggie Rescue collects excess produce from local farms, backyards then distributes it directly farmers markets and backyar to schools and organizations serving those in need, at no cost to the recipient. We accept donations.

origins

In late 2010 – armed with a pickup truck – a small but dedicated group of volunteer gleaners and a handful of farmers willing to open their fields filled the first boxes of rescued veggies. By the end of 2011, Santa Ynez Valley Fruit & Vegetable Rescue, or Veggie Rescue as it has come to be known, was officially a Nonprofit Corporation, and had delivered 50,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.

groWtH

As the or organization has grown, Veggie Rescue has nurtured our community in countless other ways. Collaborating with NatureTrack, Veggie Rescue developed Farm Track, where children can get their hands dirty gleaning, learning about how their food grows and how agriculture depends on a healthy environment.

nutrition

Veggie Rescue has a long-standing and popular “Reach in for Nutrition” program at two local Senior Centers. Reach-in coolers were installed at each location and they are stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, ensuring nutritious food is available to those with limited budgets.

Produce delivered since we sprouted through September, 2019: 945,720 POUNDS! Food Budget Savings: $1,515,544.00

The mission of Veggie Rescue is to improve the nutrition and quality of life for community members who are struggling with food insecurity by providing them with healthy, local produce and high quality prepared food, and to work with farmers and local businesses to reduce food waste. To carry out this mission, Veggie Rescue collects fresh fruits, vegetables and prepared food from local farms, farmers markets, backyards and businesses, then delivers this food directly to nonprofit recipient organizations and schools feeding community members in need.

HOPE NEEDS A HELPING HAND Serving children in crisis Children who have experienced abuse or neglect face a frightening, profound unknown. Courtrooms. Foster care. New schools. A revolving door of wellmeaning professionals. All while dealing with the trauma of abuse or neglect. At CASA of Santa Barbara County, we make sure these children don’t face the dependency court and foster care system alone. Addressing an urgent need Children and youth who have experienced abuse or neglect are among the most vulnerable populations in America. A child in foster care may have faced physical, psychological or emotional trauma and years of uncertainty as they wait to go home, be adopted or simply see what happens next. All that chaos has long-term effects. Young people who have spent time in foster care are more likely to face incarceration, homelessness, and unemployment. They are less likely to graduate high school and more likely to be victims of trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Changing a child’s story During a child’s time in the foster care system, he or she might have dozens of social workers, attorneys, therapists, teachers, and caregivers—but will have only one CASA volunteer. For many, their CASA volunteer is the one consistent person in their life.

P: (805) 739-9102 W: SBCASA.ORG SOCIAL MEDIA sbcasa SB_CASA sbcasa casa-of-santa-barbara-county MISSION The Mission of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Santa Barbara County is to assure a safe, permanent, nurturing home for every abused and/or neglected child by providing a highly trained volunteer to advocate for them in the court system.

Our highly-trained court-appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers get to know the child they are assigned to and are by their side, advocating for their best interests in the courtroom and the community. CASA volunteers make sure each child’s individual needs remain a priority in an overburdened child welfare system.

CHANGE A CHILD’S STORY

Helping one child at a time CASA volunteers are appointed by the juvenile court judge to advocate for a child’s best interests. They stay with the child until their case is closed and they reach a safe, permanent home. Volunteers work with legal and child welfare professionals, educators and others to ensure that judges have all the information they need to make potentially life-changing decisions for each child. CASA volunteers are there to change lives at the most challenging time in a child’s life, and they do. Multiple studies have shown that children who have experienced abuse or neglect fare better with a CASA volunteer by their side. They are more likely to find a safe, permanent home, more likely to succeed in school, and half as likely to re-enter the foster care system. Every month, there are more children entering the foster care system who still need the powerful advocacy of a CASA volunteer. With your help, we can recruit, train and support more volunteers to reach more children in need.
