Santa Maria Noon-Time Rotary A Proud History of Community Service

The Rotary motto of “Service Above Self ” is well established in The Rotary Club of Santa Maria, which, as the oldest Rotary Club in Santa Maria, has the longest legacy of community service providing service in the Santa Maria Valley for 97 years. Sponsored by the Santa Barbara Club and chartered in 1922, the club has sponsored the San Luis Obispo Rotary Club in 1923, Lompoc Rotary in 1925, the Guadalupe Rotary in 1940, the Santa Maria South Rotary Club in 1973 and Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary in 1984. The club’s first meeting was held at the Santa Maria Inn, and the club continues to meet there on Tuesdays at noon. The Rotary Club of Santa Maria also sponsors St. Joseph High School Interact Club which was established in 2006. The club is also working to create additional Interact Clubs at two local high schools. The Rotaract Club for young professionals was sponsored by our club and this year President Molly Schiff is working to build membership through fun , fellowship and exciting service projects. Our club is an avid “End Polio Now” supporter, with generous contributions donated annually to Rotary International’s Polio Eradication Initiative. The Initiative has inoculated 2.5 billion people against this crippling disease since 1988 and has reduced the number of countries with polio cases down to two in 2019, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Many local non- profit agencies and Rotary

International service efforts are supported by community members annually at the annual Sips and Sombreros fundraising dinner which has raised over one million dollars . Supported by club members this year’s event honored Susan Righetti with the “Don Melby Business Ethics Award”. The event benefited Family Care Network. According to the club’s president Cynthia Schur, the club’s fundraising events have surpassed one million dollars supporting many local service projects as well as organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, CASA of SBC, Good Samaritan Shelter, Santa Maria Public Library Foundation, Camp Fire Central Coast, Allan Hancock College Scholarship Foundation, and numerous others. The historical Rotary Club of Santa Maria boasts a strong link with Cecil B. DeMille, who, while filming “The Ten Commandments” in Guadalupe regularly attended club meetings at the Inn. His affection for the club led him to ask his Hollywood prop department to make a Rotary Wheel for the club, which he presented to club members. This wheel now sits in the Santa Maria Historical Museum. The Rotary Club of Santa Maria is a proud co-sponsor of the Christmas Parade of Lights, working with the other Rotary Clubs in Santa Maria and Nipomo for several months to assure that all logistics are managed efficiently.

Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary Season’s Greetings!

Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary wishes the Santa Maria Valley a joyful holiday season. May the light of Christmas fill your families with an abundance of happy cheer. Since 1984, Rotary’s vision has been “Service above Self.” Our dedicated Rotarians work with an array of non-profits in the area, including supporting veterans and military personnel. We also partner with other local Rotary groups. Together we are committed to education, volunteering, and fundraising for the greater good of the community, which results in the dissemination of tens of thousands of dollars into the community each year. All in all, we have donated over $1 million since our inception. Whether it is helping a Special Olympics athlete succeed, seeing a child experience their first Christmas parade, or a displaced resident being fed at the local shelter, needs are met and dreams, big and small, are realized every day due to the selfless commitment to service that our diverse members routinely exemplify. For example, our club alone provided $31,000

December 2019

in scholarships this year to high school seniors with aspirations for higher education. But Breakfast Rotarians are not only dedicated to local causes; we are internationally-minded and driven, too. Clubs are committed to the improvement of health, sanitation, and education in villages and cities around the world. Rotarians from Santa Maria and Nipomo have traveled, for example, to Africa and India to immunize children from Polio; we’ve built schools and free health clinics in Mexico. Presently, we have partnered with multiple US Clubs to help build new schools in rural Guatemala, and more. Our world is a small one. So, be it local or global, serving together to improve the lives of friends, new and old, is at the very heart of Rotary’s vision. This year marks the 25th annual Parade of Lights. The Breakfast Rotary Club volunteers countless hours to help ensure that our community feels the warmth, joy, and hope of this holiday season, year after year. We look forward to seeing you and your family!

Santa Maria South Rotary Holiday Greetings

Each year, the holiday season seems to get busier and busier, and it’s easy to get caught up in the parties, the presents, and the hustle and bustle. However, the true meaning of the season always comes back to giving. Humorist and author Peg Bracken once said: “Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.” As members of Rotary Club of Santa Maria South, we strive to embrace that message and mission of giving year-round. In April, we held our annual Run/Walk for Mental Health. Because of the support of our community, we were able to donate $6,000 to Growing Grounds Farms, an organization that works to realize personal growth for individuals with mental illness though vocational training. Over the summer, our Club hosted another ShredFest event, where community members could bring documents for shredding. There was a small fee for the service, but many also made donations to the Club. This October, in conjunction with our Halloween Party, we held a wine raffle, where two lucky people walked away with a 24-bottle collection of local wines. Through the generosity of those who purchased tickets, raffle sales this year totaled over $3,000, all of which goes directly to fund our communityservice projects. Every December, we host a meeting with some special visitors, including 10 children from the Santa Maria Boys & Girls Club and one who makes the long trek from the North Pole. After dinner, the children can have their picture taken with Santa and receive presents, which are donated by the Club members. In addition to these events, we regularly serve in other ways. On Monday mornings, our members volunteer with Showers of

6 | Santa Maria Christmas Parade of Lights ~ 25th Anniversary

Blessing, which provides showers, haircuts, clothing, and supplies to the poor and homeless. We also collect food donations for the Santa Barbara Food Bank and the Santa Maria Rescue Mission. Our Club’s impact reaches beyond Santa Maria, too. We continue to partner with a Rotary Club in La Paz, Mexico, to support the local villages and schools by providing water filtration systems and delivering school supplies and textbooks as well as raising funds to help provide school uniforms, a necessity for school attendance. Rotary Club of Santa Maria South meets on the first three Mondays of each month at the Santa Maria Inn. The meetings begin at 6:00 p.m., but many members meet beforehand at 5:30 p.m. in the Tap Room for a glass of wine and the chance to socialize and network with other members. Additionally, each meeting features a speaker, whose talk raises awareness about what’s going on in the community and informs about issues and developments affecting us. Rotary, at its core, is a grassroots organization. We believe that, when we come together, we can make a difference in our communities and even across the globe. Our aim is to give our time, to raise money, and to reach out to build a better community and world and, by doing so, fulfill the Rotary motto: “Service above self.” If you are interested in learning more about our Club or if you want to join us, please contact Peter Garcia at peterleandrogarcia@ yahoo.com or check out our website (https:// www.santamariarotarysouth.org/) or our Facebook page (https://www.facebook/ santamariarotarysouth). Wishing you and your family and friends a joyful Christmas and a wonderful holiday season!

Nipomo Rotary Family, Fun and Fellowship

Season’s greetings from the Rotary Club of Nipomo! With many good wishes for the holiday season and the coming new year! Rotary Club of Nipomo meets on Wednesday mornings, 7:00 a.m., at the Butterfly Grille in the Trilogy at Monarch Dunes community. Though we meet early, you won’t find us half-asleep! At our meetings you’ll enjoy a lively and friendly atmosphere where you’ll feel welcome to join in the fun. Throughout the year among our service projects, there are also many social gatherings to celebrate fellowship and to include family in our Rotary activities. You will discover that our club is composed of outgoing and friendly individuals of many professions and backgrounds – all united in our purpose of “Service Above Self.” This service takes many forms, but perhaps most recognizable is our renowned Barbeque Team. Fundraising is served up as tasty Santa Maria-style barbeque when we collaborate with local non-profits to benefit those in need in our area. By partnering with local schools, 4-H programs, Operation Rescue, and many other organizations, we have raised thousands of dollars to benefit numerous segments of our Central Coast community. An outstanding example of this collaboration has been our Winner Winner Fundraiser, a reverse drawing, barbeque dinner, and auction, that this year benefited the Nipomo High School Theatre Department. Both groups work tirelessly to make this a successful event with its appealing auction items, delightful dinner, and an exuberant live performance by the high school ensemble. Service to youth is a special concern to our club as we award multiple scholarships each year to local high school graduates who plan to continue their higher education or to attend vocational school. In conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of the Five Cities area, Rotary Club of Nipomo has co-sponsored a literacy program for the past several years, giving the gift of a personalized book to all third-grade students in Nipomo. We assist at the Nipomo High School Renaissance Pancake December 2019

Breakfast, making pancakes for those students receiving special academic recognition. Our club also has sponsored an Interact Club at NHS, participating in a beach clean up day with those students, as well as sponsoring their attendance at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) in Ojai. Rotary, of course, would not be complete without its component of International Service. Our club has donated to many Rotary projects abroad, providing monetary support to clubfoot operations in Honduras as well as clean water projects in Baja California Sur. We have sponsored students to attend school in both Uganda and Mexico, and we have donated to the eradication of polio, with Rotary International’s End Polio Now efforts. We have in the past also participated in World Immunization Days to support that same cause, and some of our club members have traveled to India to provide vaccinations to the children there. Chartered in 1997, Rotary Club of Nipomo has many longstanding, continuing and completed projects. Our yearly golf tournament fundraiser is an event not to be missed! It is an important element in our ability to support and sponsor many of the projects mentioned here. In recent years, we have constructed the Paul Teixeira Rotary Bandstand at Nipomo Regional Park. We have planted trees at that same park as well as sponsored our local Little League. We have supported the Dana Adobe and the Nipomo Senior Center. We provide assistance at the Paul Teixeira Nipomo Community Thanksgiving and at the Nipomo Recreation Association’s Kids Day in the Park. We host community blood drives and hold a recognition dinner for our local first responders. And of course, the Rotary Club of Nipomo participates in the Christmas Parade of Lights and Canned Food Drive. We are so pleased to be a part of this parade in its 25th year – may each year continue to grow and thrive for this joyous holiday event!
