Santa Maria Elks Recreation, Inc. - Elks Rodeo and Parade The Elks Recreation, Inc., first formed as a Foundation in 1943, remains committed to its original goal to support youth organizations in the Santa Maria Valley and surrounding communities and to award scholarships to deserving applicants. Benefits from Elks Rec, Inc. contributions are evident throughout the community in the numerous facilities and programs affected, including swimming pools, a youth center, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, year-round recreation centers, basketball courts, athletic equipment, and scouting programs. All efforts related to the Elk’s Recreation, Inc.—the coordinating of activities and fundraising—is the result of volunteers, more than 1,300 who work on 60 different committees. Current plans are in process for our 71st Annual Rodeo.

Queen Contest Still the Primary Fund Raiser! The Queen contest, begun in 1947, remains the single most important program for raising funds for youth recreation. Area non-profit groups and organizations will select a young lady as their queen candidate to represent them, in conjunction with the 71st Annual Elks Rodeo and Parade, May 29 to June 1, 2014. Excited to return as Elks Queen Contest Chairman, Peter Sterling served as Queen Chairman from 2000 – 2005. He says, “Queen Candidates serve as ambassadors for the groups at many community and Rodeo events.” The Parade will feature the Queen Float—including former Queens—and many community youth groups. Over $10,000,000 has been raised in past years and has been returned to the various youth

groups represented. “This year the grand prize will be announced soon,” says Sterling, and the groups participating will share in the proceeds of the contest, which will begin with the traditional Queen and Rodeo Kick-off Dinner, Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge. The Queen Candidates must be between the ages of 16 – 21. No horsemanship or rodeo experience is required, and western outfits will be provided. “Any non-profit group can enter a candidate, even FFA groups,” says Sterling. Service groups such as Altrusa, Rotary Club, Lions Club, veterans’ associations, etc. are also encouraged to consider sponsoring a candidate. For information, contact Peter Sterling at 805-568-6809.

PCPA — Celebrating 50 Years Anniversaries are always times to celebrate the best of the past while we aspire to and work toward the brightest possible future. This season we continue the tradition of bringing the best of the established theatrical canon together with sparkling new work, to edify, entertain and enlighten our community, as we have for the past five decades. While we celebrate the history of the theater, all of us recognize that the goal has never been to create a “celebrated history.” The tremendous history of PCPA is an outcome of the fact that for 50 years the theatre has

been intensely consumed with a commitment to the present. The theatre enables us to simultaneously reflect and recognize that we live in the now. It’s an art form that requires your presence and inspires your future. Theatre is inherently visionary, present and future oriented, rather than retrospective. Your professional conservatory theatre is truly golden – refined through the fire of experience, rich in value, weighty, dazzling, beautiful to behold and of enormous worth. The full value and great legacy of the theatre

will ultimately be in the creation of an art-full future. We continue our commitment to that legacy by crafting work today that builds a tomorrow enriched by art and illuminated by artists. Toward a brighter tomorrow, Mark Booher Artistic Director

Valley Haven Valley Haven provides an active day program for seniors who are socially isolated, medically frail or may have some dementia. Our program provides socialization, supervision, respite for caregivers and improved quality of life. Many times, families do not realize that their parents or grandparents have grown older and are no longer able to care for themselves as they once did. With the small communities that we live in, oftentimes children have moved away and our seniors do not have family close by to help care for them. With their families far away, there is no built in safety net for these seniors. Valley Haven can help! We have locations in both Solvang (688-8052) and Lompoc (733-9459) and are ready to help make the difficult task of caregiving a little easier.

OUR NEW LOCATION IN LOMPOC AT 502 N. THIRD STREET WILL BE OPENING SOON AND WILL OFFER EXTENDED HOURS AND SERVICE 2 SATURDAYS PER MONTH

VTC Enterprises The official mission of VTC Enterprises is to assist youth and adults with disabiliƟes or other limitaƟons in choosing and achieving their life goals. While it’s a compact phrase describing a big job, we are indeed fulfilling that mission by offering personalized programs that get at the heart of what really makes a difference to the people we serve. At VTC we strive to truly understand individual strengths, interests and needs in order to provide the best services possible. Ac vi es in our Quality Life Services (QLS) program take place both on facility and in the community. Individuals have

the opportunity to increase their independence within a full balance of areas such as communica on, social interac on, health and safety, leisure and crea vity, cooking labs and housekeeping, basic job skill development, and community access and involvement. Many skills are reinforced through technology by par cipaon in iPad classes and a computer lab. Our Integrated Work Services (IWS) program is completely community based and has a stronger focus on employment. Everyone who par cipates in IWS spends part of their week working at a local business. Other ac vi es are designed to assist

individuals in mee ng their highest poten al within their own community by strengthening social skills, achieving competency in the use of public transportaon, and developing skills to deal safely with people and situa ons in a community se ng. We also have many op ons for those who want to concentrate solely on employment or the development of prac cal job skills. There are opportunies to train or work in a variety of se ngs and situa ons at VTC and other businesses. Some examples include catering, retail, food service, packaging, stocking, janitorial, and landscape maintenance. There are many possi-

bili es beyond those men oned here, and we are always working to develop new and exci ng employment opportuni es. What we’ve shared here is but a general descrip on of what goes on at VTC Enterprises. Behind this brief overview are layers of experience in helping the people we serve to build the lives they envision for themselves. To learn more about what we are doing, or about what we can do for you, please contact us or visit our website at www.vtc-sm.org.

Thank you for your support! In 2012 VTC’s Quality Life Services moved into the new building that you, the Santa Maria Valley and surrounding communities, helped make a reality.

Solvang Friendship House has been warmly supportive of elders and their families since its founding in 1978 by Dr. Lou Netzer, a long-time family practice doctor in the Valley. His vision was a home-like environment for the elderly who were frail but not needing the service provided in a nursing home setting. For over 35 years , Solvang Friendship House has provided quality residential and Alzheimer’s care in a safe, charming and homey environment. Our New Life Enrichment Day Program makes Solvang Friendship House’s special environment available to non-residents, offering a respite (time-off) for caregivers and a life –enriching experience for elders. Very affordable, only $8.50 hour, and flexible, the day program includes many features including transportation, personal care assistance, grooming and shower assistance, health monitoring, extended hours and Saturday service to name a few- meeting the needs of seniors who are frail or have memory impairments. Solvang Friendship House also provides respite care for families looking for a short term stay or an occasional helping hand with a loved one. Respite care is ideal for people who need care for a few days, a week, or as long as a month. Whether you need help recovering from a hospital stay or injury, or are the caregiver in need of a little break, our Respite Care program is here for you. Also available is a resource library on various Alzheimer’s disease topics and Solvang Friendship House partners with the Alzheimer’s Association to present lectures/workshops on caring for your aging parents, new advances in Alzheimer treatments and facilitates a bi-monthly Alzheimer’s support group. Behind the friendly smiles is a well trained staff, committed to providing quality care, treating all as

family, respecting the uniqueness and dignity of each resident. Solvang Friendship House is an Eden Registered Home, our entire staff at every level of the care spectrum is committed to creating a warm, loving home using the principles and practices of The Eden Alternative. We share The Eden Alternative’s belief that the most effective care happens when there is a partnership between the caregiver and the care receiver. Just as in a family, close relationships are grown by having the elders and care partners make daily decisions together such as the daily routine, what to eat, what to spend their doing, when to celebrate and what to improve. In partnership with The Eden Alternative, Solvang Friendship House is transforming into a place where elders come to live and thrive -- something we all want for our loved ones, and eventually for ourselves. Solvang Friendship House is grateful for the ongoing generous community support of our home. Community support enhances our ability to continue the expansion of programs and introduce new services to meet the everchanging needs of the seniors in our community. Community support has enabled Solvang Friendship House to be known for its affordability as well as its high standard of excellent personal care. Solvang Friendship House commends all family members who are caregivers for an elderly loved one or with Alzheimer’s disease and understand the frustration, guilt and sadness that families experience as a loved one progresses through the disease and needs more care than the family can provide. The Solvang Friendship House is here to assist families dealing with Alzheimer’ disease and welcome the families to stop by and/or call for more information or support.

is a Non-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community that has Been Helping Seniors for Over 60 years. Atterdag Village helps seniors remain independent and active by providing a wide variety of services freeing residents to spend their energy on things in life that bring them joy. Our assisted living and memory care offers residents additional, personalized services with a professionally trained staff, available 24-hours a day. The Atterdag Care Center provides round the clock nursing care including long-term care and shortterm rehabilitation for individuals recovering from surgery or an illness. Our staff is well known for their compassionate care and physical therapy department that helps patients regain their strength and independence. The Endowment Fund was set up to provide financial assistance to residents in need. Donations of every type—annual and planned giving, charitable remainder trusts, donations made in memory of a family or friend, as well as donations made in celebration of the birthday of a loved one—help residents who have outlived their resources live in dignity and achieve the highest quality of life. The Atterdag Village kitchen prepares food for Meals-on-Wheels and the Solvang Senior Center, which is often the only nutritionally balanced meal many of the elderly in the valley will eat each day. With our eye towards the future and the high demand we will face as the Baby Boomers age, we have established a Master Plan providing more options and amenities. In 2014 Atterdag Village will break ground for a new assisted living building, aquatics center, fitness room, community center and nine two-bedroom, two-bath cottages. From the very active senior to those needing round the clock nursing care Atterdag Village is a beacon of hope to our aging population and we offer a sincere and heartfelt thanks to all who support our cause.

“Give to those things you really believe in.” Lola Dority is 92 years young. A retired librarian and lifelong lover of books, she donates her time and money through the Allan Hancock College Foundation to the college’s library to buy children’s and popular reading books. There are also beautiful books for family reading, and for parents to share with their children. Lola's gifts for the library are meant to instill a love of reading beyond the classroom. Lola’s advice on giving: “Find something you have a great deal of passion for and support it. Give to those things you really believe in. My passion is books.”

A message from the Allan Hancock College Foundation: Lola has chosen to be generous with her estate during her lifetime. That way, she can see what her giving accomplishes, and that brings her a lot of joy. As a result, she has left a lasting legacy to Allan Hancock College and our community. When you give to the Allan Hancock College Foundation, you invest in students. By investing in students, you make one of the most effective, long-term investments in our community, and you help ensure that it will continue to be a wonderful place to live and work.

several hours on the phone advocating for Hailey. Susan was able to postpone Hailey’s visits with her parents until further investigation had been done.

The problems facing children in Santa Barbara County are acute. One in five children is living in poverty, domestic violence reports are growing, and public resources are shrinking. We at CALM (Child Abuse Listening Mediation) are raising our voice about the needs of our children throughout the County. Now more than ever, we need support from you – our community supporters, volunteers, corporate partners, and generous donors – so that we may continue to address the critical needs of the growing population that we serve.

Later that day, Susan met with “Tanner” and “Andrew,” two young boys whose mother recently lost her life to cancer. Susan helped the children say goodbye by saying a prayer for her, writing letters to her on balloons, and releasing the balloons into the sky. That is one day, one therapist. Every day at CALM, a child’s life is changed. This community has the opportunity to engage with CALM to help heal and prevent child abuse. A day in the life of a CALM therapist easily demonstrates the range of work we do at CALM. Take “Susan,” a therapist in CALM’s Santa Maria office, who began her day recently with “Adriana,” a 17-year-old mother of an infant. Adriana suffers from postpartum depression and confessed to Susan that, while she loves her baby and wants to be a good mother, she has been incredibly stressed and has had thoughts of harming her child. Susan supported Adriana by helping her make a safety plan for moments of intense stress, teaching her relaxation skills, and aiding her in contacting a doctor who specializes in treating depression.

Get Involved. Be An Advocate. Raise Your Voice. To learn more about CALM, please visit www.calm4kids.org.

Next, Susan met with “Hailey,” a 5-year-old living in foster care. Hailey was scheduled to have her first visit with her biological parents the following day. However, during her meeting with Susan, Hailey revealed that she had been sexually abused by one of her parents. Susan spent the next

CASA of Santa Barbara County The CASA Solution

22 — Community of Giving 2013 — Lee Central Coast Newspapers

Every Child’s Right A child has a right to feel safe, loved and cared for. An undeniable right to learn and grow and become the person they are destined to be. To be treated as human beings, not possessions. To thrive. In our society the stewardship of a child’s rights rest primarily with family. But too many families are in crisis, and too many children are lost in the process. Because of that, in our country right now, nearly 425,000 children are separated from their families— a surprisingly disproportionate number of whom are Native American, Latino and African-American. Over the course of any year 660,000 children go through the child welfare system. More than 600 hundred children right here in Santa Barbara County are part of that system through no fault of their own. A system full of well-intentioned people trying their best to place children in what is hoped will be better circumstances. But it is, after all, just a system—and an overtaxed one at that. In our county 20 cases of children in peril can come before a single judge before he’s halfway through his Monday. Too often a child can be placed in a different home from his sisters or brothers. Too often a single child can move to three or five or even more foster homes in merely a matter of a year or two. Too often a child can languish for years without finding a stable home, only to ultimately “age out” of the system.

Our solution to such injustice begins with a single volunteer. Not just a mentor or a special buddy. This volunteer is a court appointed special advocate, a “CASA volunteer.” Someone specially trained to know what is in a child’s best interest, and how to get those interests met by the system. Someone who knows how to help a child through this time of great vulnerability. A deeply committed adult. A person who will fight for this child, against all odds, against power, against bureaucracy and shortsighted agendas. Fight until that child understands that he has a right to believe in himself. Fight, until she can understand and advocate for her own inalienable rights. To live a life of destiny, rather than fate. Today, more than 75,000 CASA volunteers are spread throughout 955 local and state programs around the country. Last year in Santa Barbara County, we had 284 of these local heroes advocating for 319 children. Because of CASA volunteers nationwide, more than 2 million children have found their way to a safe home—with an adoptive family, extended family or returned to their birth parents when it is safe to reunify. CASA is the only program of its kind. In the child welfare and family court systems, it is nothing short of a revolution. Everything is built around one child and one adult advocate for that child. The CASA solution has been proven.

Nobody needs to invent a new technology or method to achieve success. We know what works. Success is now a question of scale. Right now, more than 40% of the children in foster care and family court system in Santa Barbara County do not have a CASA volunteer to represent their best interests. That’s hundreds of children who don’t have the kind of hope only a CASA volunteer can provide. We can change that. CASA of Santa Barbara County is committed to a simple but powerful vision: helping to change the world for every abused and neglected child in our community by 2018. We will need your help to accomplish this goal.

Our Commitment With a CASA volunteer, a child is half as likely to languish in foster care, and that much more likely to find a safe, permanent home. Your support helps us expand our local programs, and recruit and train volunteers. Join us as a donor, or become a CASA volunteer and advocate to ensure abused and neglected children have their rights protected, and their future is bright. Lift up a child’s voice. A child’s life.

The People for Leisure And Youth, Inc. — PLAY, Inc. The People for Leisure And Youth, Inc. (PLAY Inc.) is a non-profit public benefit corporation committed to promoting public welfare and education through the acceptance of contributions for use in enhancing, maintaining, and promoting the recreation, leisure, and parks services offered by the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department. These services offer a multitude of personal, social, economic, and environmental benefits. So what does that REALLY mean? The non-profit organization, PLAY, Inc. was formed in 1997 to enhance recreation and leisure services in Santa Maria. By hosting fundraisers, soliciting direct contributions, and writing grants, PLAY, Inc. has created the means to provide scholarships for individuals and families for programs and classes offered by the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department; such as sports, arts and dance classes, summer camps, and much more.

24— Community of Giving 2013 — Lee Central Coast Newspapers

In addition to the tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships, PLAY, Inc. has provided many new playgrounds in City parks, sponsorship and financial support for many City events such as Concerts in the Park, Autumn Arts Grapes and Grains, and Dia De Los Muertos Festival, new technology, gaming, and exercise

equipment at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center. Also provided, new interactive inflatables used by the Recreation and Parks Department and community agencies during special events, the “Rec and Roll” portable stage, equipment and furniture for the Elwin Mussell Senior Center, support for Special Olympics of Northern Santa Barbara County through equipment purchases, travel expenses for athletes, and their uniforms, and is the fiduciary agent for the Santa Maria Police Activities League (PAL); plus funding for the mobile arts program Art A La Carte, the fundraising and purchasing of the new Christmas decorations that light up Broadway, and a City Christmas tree that creates smiles and reminds everyone about the spirit of Christmas. PLAY, Inc. believes that: Youth that are holding a paint brush, participating in a sport, visiting fun and welcoming environments, and participating in constructive activities led by caring adults are less likely to drop out of school, do drugs, or commit crimes. Families who participate in affordable, fun, and enriching programs together create a strong community by creating a relationship that is built on a foundation of trust, love, and respect; and adults and seniors who

participate in the activities and programs tend to live healthier and longer lives than those who are sedentary. The funding for scholarships, equipments, and events are all made possible through grants, fundraisers, and contribution from businesses, foundations, and people like you. If you are interested in learning more about PLAY, Inc. or to make a contribution please call (805) 925-0951 ext. 263, visit the website at www.santamariaatplay.org, or follow PLAY, Inc. on Facebook www.facebook.com/playinc .
