Welcome to Dauphin! Rich history and culture, inviting outdoor spaces, award-winning sustainability initiatives, progressive active living and transportation, and endless recreation opportunities. These are just a few of my favourite things about Dauphin. 2020 was a remarkably difficult year—people across Manitoba were forced to cope with a new normal: provincial public health orders, travel bans, economic strains, and impacts on our mental health. Now, due to the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus)

pandemic, many of our attractions and businesses are operating with reduced hours and events have been cancelled or postponed. They say “home is where the heart is”, so why not take this opportunity to rediscover your own backyard in 2021! Dauphin is a warm community, fortunate to be nestled between a provincial and national park. ADVENTURES NORTHGATE DAUPHIN TRAIL SYSTEM MULTI-USE IN EVERY SEASON

Northgate Dauphin is a 26-km system of stacked loop, multi-use trails featuring sections for mountain bikers, hiking, trail running, and areas to gather and take in the scenery of Riding Mountain National Park’s beautiful “North Escarpment”. The main trailhead area is situated on the border of the national park, only seven minutes south of the City of Dauphin, on Highway 10. Here, at Northgate, visitors will find the Co-op Community Family Trail section—a great place to hike, bike, and play, which also connects to trails or varying and increasing difficulty within the system. The trailhead also features parking, modern washrooms and five new micro cabins available for booking! Continue to page 6 for more information.

Five all-season micro-cabins are nestled at the trailhead and make a perfect home base for your outdoor adventure. Each cabin is 100 square feet with a bunk bed (double + single mattress), Wi-Fi, table and two chairs, nightstand, clothes hooks, and a private driveway. RIDE THE REGION HyLife Back Forty Multi‑Use Trail Park 1

The HyLife Back Forty Multi-Use Trail Park provides fun for all ages. It is located at the north end of Neepawa at 50°14'31.6"N 99°26'48.3"W. The 5.1 km course involves increasing levels of difficulty, a pump track, and a wooden feature track. The Park is surrounded by a walking trail. The Trail Park is open year-round with opportunities for cycling, fat biking, walking/running, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The natural grade plus man-made hills combine short technical climbs and descents with table tops and jumps. Technical features include drops, table tops, wall ramp, boulders, logs, and berms. Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP) 4

RMNP has over 400 kms of trails for hikers and mountain bikers. While most of the hiking trails are single use, a good portion of the extensive trail system is designated as multi-use. Just a short drive from Dauphin, several trails can be accessed from park roads, including Highway 10. Thanks to the efforts of several local volunteer organizations, many trails are open to cross-country skiers and backcountry skiers during the winter months. RAINBOW BEACH PROVINCIAL PARK On the southwestern shore of Dauphin Lake, Rainbow Beach Provincial Park is the perfect spot for an afternoon, evening, or weekend getaway from a bustling life. The park is situated 24 kilometres east of Dauphin on PTH 20 and features swimming and recreation for kids and quiet nights by the lake for parents. Enjoy scenic walks along the shore, build sandcastles, and frolic along the sand bars that provide a safe and interesting swimming area. The beach and picnic areas with fire pits, playground area, ball diamonds, horseshoe pits, and hiking trails contribute to the outdoor experience, while the seasonal canteen, and modern washroom and shower facilities provide added comfort. A separate dog beach and both spacious and private campsites

throughout the park are ideal for quiet family get-togethers. The water bodies of Crooked and Crawford Creeks flow within the park, with a boat launch and meandering pathways by the channels located just west of the campground. The nearby Dauphin Lake Golf Club offers a diversion for the avid golfer with a full-service club that’s great for a rainy-day meal. See page 18 for more information. It is a favourite of the locals to watch the sunset near the silhouette of Riding Mountain National Park, while listening to the sounds of the abundant local wildlife! Come check out Dauphin Lake this summer and take in a sunset, and a free show from the legendary northern lights of Manitoba!

Fishing Regulations for Dauphin Lake (2021 Angler’s Guide) Dauphin Lake including that portion of the Mossy River to municipal road 107 west and all inflowing tributaries— the walleye/sauger limit is 4 and all walleye between 45 cm and 70 cm must be released. All inflowing tributaries and those parts of Dauphin Lake within 1 km of their mouths are closed to all fishing, including dip netting from March 1 to and including May 8. The remaining parts of Dauphin Lake remain open in March and are closed to all fishing from April 1 to and including May 8.

PARKLAND PADDLING CLUB

The Parkland Paddling Club (PPC) is a great resource for local paddling knowledge and training opportunities. Take an introductory course or hone your skills with a specialty clinic or private instruction. Winter doesn’t keep this club down—sign up for classes in our local Kinsmen Aquatic Centre! Recreational, sea kayaking, and whitewater—this club does it all. Meet up with other locals for a weekday club paddle or organize a group experience through the Community Outreach Program. Whatever works best for you, the PPC is here to help you get out on the water this summer! FAMILY-FRIENDLY PADDLING The Dauphin area presents many opportunities to enjoy nature in a canoe. Moon Lake, Clear Lake and Lake Audy in RMNP offer many quiet moments for watching sunsets and wildlife. Many of the creeks and rivers in the area are navigable especially at the beginning of the season. Be careful of sweeps and water levels. Duck Mountain Provincial Park also possesses beautiful lakes and owns a couple of short overnight routes. The Parkland is an ideal place to introduce your family to recreational canoeing. Visit Clear Lake Marina for rentals of kayaks, pedal boats and stand‑up paddleboards. Clear Lake has been deemed the “Best Lake in Western Manitoba” and offers crystal clear views of the lakebed and aquatic life in some areas. Clear Lake Marina is seasonal and carries a full stock of rentals and safety gear for paddlers and boat rentals. Visit them at clearlakemarina.ca

MANDATORY INSPECTIONS are required for all watercraft, including motorboats, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and inflatables entering RMNP waters. This includes Clear Lake, South Lake, and all outlying lakes (Deep Lake, Lake Audy, Moon Lake, Whirlpool Lake & Lake Katherine) as well as all streams and rivers. This service is free of charge and watercraft passing inspection will receive a permit from Parks Canada. GOLF Dauphin Lake Golf Club. This 18‑hole, 1,610 yard, par 70 course with a rating of 69.8 is on the beautiful shore of Dauphin Lake. A challenging course known for its rolling and slightly tiered greens, the Dauphin Lake Golf Resort course has narrow fairways, numerous trees and shrubs, plus sand and grass bunkers, with water hazards on several greens. Amenities include a Pro Shop, lessons, driving range, reservations, a licensed restaurant and lounge with outdoor patio, club rentals, power or pull cart rentals, and equipment repair. Camping is just two minutes away at Rainbow Beach Provincial Park. Under new management. WATCHABLE WILDLIFE Tips For Viewing Wildlife In The Region • Respect the habitat in the area. Your visit to an area should be low-impact (leave no trace of yourself). Carry out any refuse with you, and refrain from damaging any habitat. • Feeding wild animals can be dangerous to both human and animal and is also illegal. Be sure to keep food away from all wildlife and preserve the authenticity of the experience. • Be aware that your sound and/or scent may frighten an animal and make viewing difficult. Move slowly and quietly and try to travel downwind from where you expect to find an animal. • The opposite of the previous tip is true when travelling in an area inhabited by dangerous animals. When travelling through bear country (or anywhere else where you might encounter a potentially dangerous animal, such as a moose), carry a noisemaker, such as a bell, or speak or whistle as you travel. A surprised animal feels threatened, and may react to your sudden appearance in a hostile manner. • Your two best tools are timing and patience. Find out what season and what time of day are best for viewing the desired animal. Then settle yourself in, out of sight, and watch, wait, and enjoy. • When pulling over on roads, pull as far as possible off the road and onto the shoulder, and set the hazards of your vehicle on. Be aware of traffic before you pull over!

Hunting Licenses Licenses are required for all big game and most game bird hunting. ANGLING Fishing is a favourite pastime in the area because of the many wonderful lakes for people to cast a line.

Ice fishing opportunities in the Dauphin area are endless, with Dauphin Lake being one of the best drive-to walleye fisheries in Western Canada. With the multiple access areas on the lake and seven river systems feeding it, the walleye fishery has been very popular in attracting anglers from many outside areas, as well as local anglers. With stringent conservation measures in place, this fishery remains very healthy. A one-hour drive to the northwest,

Duck Mountain Provincial Park is home to many multi-species lakes. There you’ll find all the trout species including rainbow trout, brown trout, speckled trout, splake, lakers, arctic char, and on the edge of the mountain, tiger trout. Besides the trout, many lakes also contain walleye, perch, and pike. The lakes in the Ducks are also very popular for open water boat and fly-fishing opportunities with a lake to explore every few miles. Whether you are into angling, both open water and through

Dauphin Lake Dauphin Lake is a trophy walleye fishery with fish weighing 1.4 to 1.8 kg (3‑4 lbs) or more! Try your luck catching northern pike and Master Angler walleye. A number of boat launches are available, and Rainbow Beach Provincial Recreation Park offers camping and swimming. Dauphin Lake is a shallow lake, so take care when boating. (map R18)

Duck Mountain Provincial Park A number of great fishing lakes and rivers can be found in this park, all within a one‑hour drive. Try East Blue Lake, stocked with trophy rainbow trout, splake, and lake trout or West Blue Lake for walleye, lake trout, brown trout and perch. Fish Child’s Lake for lake trout, northern pike, splake, walleye and perch. Elk Lake is a small lake with northern pike, perch and walleye. Try Gull Lake for stocked brook trout, rainbow trout, splake and lake whitefish, and Laurie Lake for lake trout, brown trout, splake, northern pike and perch. Fish for stocked bass and trout in Perch Lake (catch and release, electric motors only). Shilliday Lake

is stocked with rainbow and brown trout (electric motors only). Walleye, northern pike, perch and smallmouth bass can be caught in Singuish Lake. Beautiful Lake is a trophy rainbow and brown trout fishery however you may find walleye on occasion.

Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP)

The lakes of RMNP are open to fishing but are subject to separate rules and regulations. A Manitoba Angling License is not valid in RMNP. Moon Lake, south of Dauphin in the northeast section of RMNP, is a quiet lake with northern pike and perch. Motorized boats are permitted, but must be carried to the lake (approx. 300 m /1,000 ft).

Vermillion Reservoir Located on the northern boundary of RMNP close to Dauphin, the Vermillion Reservoir is stocked with smallmouth bass, and walleye. It is a great place for fly‑fishing and catching Master Angler smallmouth bass. The record catch at Vermillion Reservoir was a 58.42 cm (23") smallmouth bass, caught on August 10, 2003. Only electric motors may be used. (map R27)

Uncle Bob’s Kid’s Trout Pond Looking for a great place for kids to learn the great sport of fishing? Grab your rods, pack a picnic, and bring the family to Uncle Bob’s Trout Pond, located south of Dauphin off Highway 10. The man-made pond was donated to the public and managed by Intermountain Sport Fish Enhancement (ISFE) around 1990 and features picnic tables, a kitchenette, and non-modern washrooms. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout for shore fishing only and is open to the public from May to September. Catch and release is encouraged. Children 15 years and under must be accompanied by an adult to fish here. Directions: Travel 3 km south on Highway 10. Turn east on Rd 143 N for 6.7 km. At the intersection, head north on Rd 107 for 0.75 km. (map R20)

WATSON ART CENTRE The Watson Art Centre is a beautiful heritage building located directly across from the historic CNoR Station. The Watson has been around since 1905 and has held many “jobs” (town hall, police station, jail, fire department, library, and more) before focusing on the arts. The Watson is a hub where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to take in phenomenal entertainment and training in all facets of the arts including dance, pottery, music, theatre, painting, and quilting. One can come here to take in a play, enjoy live music or comedy, shop from local artisans and crafters at one of many craft sales held throughout the year or even taste exotic food and drink! The historic building is in great repair and is a culturally significant meeting place for all who reside in the Parkland region. The Watson has drawn full-house crowds for nationally and internationally recognized acts such as Doc Walker, Desiree Dorion, The Trews,

Prairie Oyster, 54.40, and The Sheepdogs. It has also brought amazing up-and-coming talent to Dauphin, including Madison Violet, Nathan, Imaginary Cities, Ray Bonneville, and Romi Mayes. In addition, the Dauphin and District Allied Arts Association makes great efforts to support local acts by offering them a forum to be seen and heard. Audience members from larger cities are always impressed by the building’s ambience. Dauphin is blessed to have this unique venue and the many volunteers who work so hard to put on the shows and activities for the appreciative audiences and participants.

Art at the Watson The Dauphin Art Group helps artists pursue the development of their artistic skills in a supportive group setting while connecting them with the arts community in Dauphin and the Parkland Region. Creating art is a richly rewarding inner journey in which artists explore, experiment, play, and translate creative ideas into visual reality, progressively learning, developing and better understanding their chosen tools, techniques, style of expression, and

ultimately themselves. The weekend workshops (instructor-led), mini-retreats (no instructor), and studio access provided by the Dauphin Art Group gives artists the time, space, and resources to focus on their art. PARKLAND RECREATION COMPLEX Dauphin’s Parkland Rec Complex is a regional hub for sports, conferences and other major events. With a capacity of nearly 2,800 in the Credit Union Place arena, there are several events held annually, at the Home of the Dauphin Kings. The arena features a second floor with a 211-metre rubberized walking track perfect for training in the off-season. The complex also features the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre with wave pool, zero‑depth entry, four lanes for swimming, 12‑person hot tub, birthday party area and waterslide. Steps over is the curling rink with an upper 140‑seat viewing lounge, used often throughout the winter months for bonspiels. The Rec Grounds also feature the Rotary Arena, ball diamonds and the DMCC Fairgrounds which is home to the annual Dauphin Agricultural Fair. In the winter months, be sure to check on the status of the outdoor skating rink.

The Aspen Lodge provides a spacious room of more than 5,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 200 guests in a banquet‑style setup. Renovated in the summer of 2011, the space provides a fresh and clean feeling and its neutral colour palate allows event organizers to easily decorate to meet their needs.

CREDIT UNION PLACE (CUP) Credit Union Place is the newest part of the Parkland Recreation Complex located at 200-1st Street S.E. Entrances to Credit Union Place are at the west end of the Parkland Recreation Complex, north entrance off of 1st Ave. S.E., and from the parking lot located on the south side of the facility. Credit Union Place is a multi-purpose entertainment facility that provides Dauphin with a great venue in which to host a wide variety of sporting events, trade shows and entertainment events. Credit Union Place is also the home for the Dauphin Kings Junior “A” Hockey Club of the MJHL. The CUP Arena offers an 200’ x 85’ NHL ice surface with “C” bowl seating for 1763, an additional standing room concourse for 247 and has a wheelchair seating area. There are two concessions, one in the CUP and one in the lower concourse, bar services, washrooms and raised media and sound rooms.

The Strilkiwski Contracting Viewing Lounge is located in the upper concourse and overlooks the event floor. The 40-person meeting/viewing area is directly linked to the Aspen Lodge and is equipped with an in-house sound system, phone lines, DSL internet and server. The Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy Walking Track is a two‑lane, 211.5 metre oval rubberized walking track located on the upper concourse and is open year-round for running and walking. The track is wheelchair accessible. Credit Union Place offers on-site food and beverage services. Two full‑service concessions are located in the facility, one on the main floor and the second on the upper concourse. Permanent and portable liquor services are operated by Dauphin Recreation Services under the Spectator Activities License agreement of the MLCC.

DAUPHIN MEMORIAL COMMUNITY CENTRE GROUNDS

The Dauphin Memorial Community Centre (DMCC) Grounds is home to the annual Ag Fair hosted every July long weekend and the annual car show and derby hosted every summer. The DMCC grounds are situated in a park‑like environment with green space a priority for all development, and house the following facilities: • Four minor baseball / softball diamonds and concession storage building • One senior baseball diamond with a concession / announcer building and batting cage • One sale barn and three pole barns for a total of 217 stalls complete with electricity, lights and water • One 16-stall livestock wash rack located at the west end of the barns

TREMBOWLA CROSS OF FREEDOM Historical Site & Museum National Heritage Site, Provincial Heritage Site This historic site and museum honours the first Ukrainian Catholic Liturgy celebrated in Canada in 1897. Nearby, on a bend in the Drifting River, stands the provincially designated St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church (c. 1898) preserved as the first Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada. Other historic buildings include a grotto, monuments, a pioneer home, and a school displaying artifacts from an early Ukrainian settlement. Originally a wooden cross was built at the site to commemorate the pioneers’ freedom in a new land. Following research by a historian, the history of the first Cross of Freedom in Canada became known and a permanent granite cross was unveiled in 1966. SELO UKRAINA The Ukrainian Folk Arts Centre & Museum operates and maintains a museum and festival site to provide an environment for the awareness and preservation of Ukrainian heritage and culture. The facility, known as “Selo Ukraina”, is located 12 kms south of Dauphin. The museum continues to develop an authentic historic experience, allowing visitors to imagine the life of early pioneers to the region. The heritage village features many unique buildings including a church with original bell towers, one-room

school house, general store complete with many artifacts from the 1930s – 1960s, shoe repair and blacksmith shops, and a community hall filled with exhibits. The site is home to the Ukrainian Musicians Hall of Fame which is filled to the brim with interesting items. There are three older farm houses on-site, uniquely furnished to pioneer era and a “summer kitchen” featuring several clay bake ovens used extensively during the Ukrainian festival.

CNoR STATION & DAUPHIN RAIL MUSEUM

The Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR) was opened to Dauphin The restored station contains commercial offices and the in 1896 by MacKenzie and Mann as part of the Lake Manitoba Dauphin Rail Museum, open during the summer months and Railway and Canal Company’s route to Winnipegosis. otherwise by appointment. The railway was the reason Dauphin as we know it today was established, and the major investment in such a significant station by 1912 was a measure of the importance of the railway in the region’s growth, in large part due to the arrival of immigrants by rail. The station was vital to rail operations into the 1970s. Thanks to a major restoration completed in 2001, after the building was rescued from threat of demolition, the station has become an architectural landmark in Dauphin and a designated Manitoba Heritage building. Pratt was the architect of both the station and nearby roundhouse, and drawings are available. The active rail line is still used daily by CN freight and VIA passenger service to Churchill. VIA travellers form a significant group within the many visitors to the station and museum. From the earliest days, formal gardens enhanced the station grounds and were part of the attraction for travellers. The museum houses pertinent artifacts, photographs, and other information about the more than 100 years of rail operations in the region. The museum holdings include a PSC‑type caboose, and one can see the turntable and roundhouse nearby which is now the base for the city public works operations. Dauphin rail operations in 1954 are the inspiration for a large HO scale model railway layout. It is the focal point for younger visitors and the many school groups that visit, which often combine a short trip on VIA with a visit to the museum. THE HISTORIC UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION National Heritage Site, Provincial Heritage Site Constructed between 1936 and 1939 by volunteers during the peak of the Great Depression, this splendid church features the early Kievan style of Eastern Byzantine architecture. The state‑of‑the‑art skate park facility has come into being through the efforts of many people and organizations in our community. Its history began in 2000 when George Graham, a young skateboard enthusiast, brought together resources and youth to get things started. Those early years consisted of wooden structures that were utilized indoors at the Dauphin Rec. Centre. A small board of volunteers consisting of Judy King, Sherry Birss, Dave Bloomfield and Tammy Laurie worked hard to keep the seasonal facility operational. Gradually those structures fell into disrepair. However, the passion for a permanent skateboard park gained momentum. In 2006 the Healthy Dauphin Committee, lead by Bill Hart, began a concerted effort to develop a plan for a skateboard park. Many meetings were initiated with local and provincial government representatives, along with Dauphin Rec. Services and volunteers, who saw the need for a permanent facility. Dauphin Neighborhood Renewal Corporation provided funding for a feasibility study. The search for a location began. In 2009 a public meeting was held at the Lion’s Den to consolidate all the interest in planning and constructing the park. Out of that meeting a committee was established under the leadership of Rod Carberry. The City of Dauphin provided the land for this location that was purchased from CNR. The Province of Manitoba, in cooperation with MLA Stan Struthers, provided substantial funding. Costing over half a million dollars, this park is made possible by the generous donations of many organizations and individuals in Dauphin. We now have a permanent multi‑use facility for skateboarders, bikers and snowboarders. It will take its place as one of the most utilized recreational facilities in Dauphin. D‑Town Plaza is an excellent recreational asset that will provide a sustaining legacy to the visionaries and enthusiasts who worked together to make it happen. Submitted by Bill Hart

Since 1990, Dauphin’s Countryfest has kicked off the Manitoba summer by welcoming country music stars of the past, present, and future to our unique outdoor amphitheatre nestled on the edge of Riding Mountain National Park. LIVE MUSIC and the festival experience are to Canadians what sunshine is to summer. Now more than ever, we all need festivals, and festivals need you. Dauphin’s Countryfest is ready to take back the July long weekend, and our next festival will feature the best and brightest in Canadian talent – what we’ve all been craving! Dauphin’s Countryfest is a not-for-profit organization that consists of a 12-member volunteer Board of Directors and a membership of more than 2,500 loyal supporters. Organizers credit over 2,000 volunteers who work tirelessly each year providing essential services for the festival weekend, while in turn fundraising for their respective community organizations. In addition to various contributions, Countryfest pays out approximately $150,000 each year to local community organizations that provide services for the festival. Dauphin’s Countryfest won Festival or Event of the Year at the Manitoba Country Music Awards from 2015 to 2018, and today are proud to sponsor the award. As well, Dauphin’s Countryfest was a finalist at the prestigious Canadian Tourism Awards in 2013, nominated for Tourism Event of the Year. The festival received the 2012 Philanthropist of the Year Award and the Community Appreciation Awards in 2011, and 2020 from the Dauphin & District Community Foundation, given to individuals or businesses showing the true spirit of philanthropy and giving. Dauphin’s Countryfest will not take place in 2021. We look forward to seeing you in July 2022!

We continue to persevere through the uncertain times ahead to plan our 2021 Festival celebrations, be it a live or virtual festival.

DAUPHIN AGRICULTURAL FAIR JULY 1 - 3, 2022

The Dauphin Agricultural Society Fair is a three-day long event involving over 60 directors from the Dauphin and surrounding communities. Originally starting mainly as a livestock event, it has now evolved into a weekend the whole family can enjoy! The fair features a full midway by Select Shows, livestock such as horses, cattle, and sheep, and an indoor kids play zone that provides activities for all ages including a petting zoo and educational agricultural games. The home living section is for the canning lovers, photographers, artists and everybody else to explore their talents and the popular outdoor Demolition Derby is the ideal show for the adrenalin lovers and thrill seekers. The Dauphin Agricultural Heritage Display showcases years of pictures and stories for the history buff in the family to discover. The fair site is conveniently located just behind the Parkland Recreation Complex with ample parking, washrooms, and vendors for food and drink all weekend. The Dauphin Agricultural Society Fair would not be possible without the hundreds of community volunteers who contribute to its success over the last 129 years. DAUPHIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE STREET FAIR JULY 29, 2021

Don’t bother trying to drive through downtown Dauphin on the Thursday before August Long Weekend; we have a party going on! From sunrise to well past sunset, the Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce hosts the Annual Street Fair & Dance. This is the hottest little party of the summer which takes place in a shutdown section of Main Street Dauphin. Start the day off with a pancake breakfast, listen to live music throughout the day and finish the evening off with a refreshing beverage or two in the beer gardens. Kids of all ages will have a blast in Nonstop Neighbourhood kids zone which is put on by Dauphin Neighbourhood Renewal. This area is full of activities and games where the fun doesn’t stop! Feel like doing a little shopping? Take a stroll through the vendor section which never seems to end. The Agriculture Heritage Club will take you through a blast to the past showing off their antiques and farming relics. But don’t think we forgot about the food! Feel free to loosen your belt for lunch and supper with the vast food vendor area. You can enjoy your favourites and we’ll guarantee you’ll find some new ones!

ROTARY LOBSTERFEST KITCHEN PARTY DRIVE-THRU EDITION

A fundraising initiative of the Rotary Club of Dauphin, the Lobsterfest Kitchen Party: Drive‑Thru Edition is an annual event that's been modified this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Tickets are available online at dauphinrec.com, and lobster (pre-cooked and chilled) will be available for pickup on Saturday, June 5, at the 8th Avenue Hall parking lot. DAUPHIN’S CULTURE DAYS

LAST WEEK OF SEPTEMBER ANNUALLY Dauphin Culture Days is part of a national celebration of the arts, typically occurring the last weekend of September, though in Dauphin, the celebration happens throughout the month. A local committee of arts enthusiasts coordinate and host a wide variety of activities, encouraging creative expression and learning, ranging from theatre, dance or musical performances, to art installations, spoken word or film. Dauphin’s Yardfringe is a keystone event of Dauphin Culture Days. On the last Saturday of September, the communitywide event transforms local yards and public spaces into venues for artistic performances. Yardfringers mainly travel on bicycle as a group to watch or participate in a selection of unique presentations, showcasing the great talent and special features of the community. HOCKEY NIGHT IN DAUPHIN Come out and watch the Dauphin Kings! Barry Trotz, Blaine Stoughton, Butch Goring, Ron Low and the list goes on. The Dauphin Kings have a deep hockey history and it continues to this day at the outstanding Credit Union Place located in the Parkland Recreation Complex in Dauphin, Manitoba. The Kings started in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in the 1967‑68 season and have since won the league seven times and taken home the prestigious Anavet Cup twice with two RBC Cup appearances.

The Kings, however, are about more than just hockey. They’re about giving back to the City of Dauphin and surrounding areas. You’ll see the Kings at a number of great community events during the year, and throughout the hockey season the team takes part in the Dauphin Friendship Centre’s Hot Lunch Program at local elementary schools, and much more!

The MJHL regular season runs from late September until the beginning of March. In the past, the Dauphin Kings and the City of Dauphin have hosted a number of high-end hockey events including the RBC Cup and CJHL Prospects Game. The teams is always competitive and exciting to watch.

Interested in checking out the Kings? Game nights at Credit Union Place feature a lot of interactive activities for fans. The world-famous Ukrainian Night happens each January and is more than just a hockey game, it’s a party! LOUIS RIEL DAY AT FORT DAUPHIN FEBRUARY 21, 2022 Join the Fort Dauphin Museum the third Monday in February as they recreate history with demonstrations, traditional food and clothing, and plenty of entertainment! Sidenote: Louis David Riel was a Canadian politician, a founder of the province of Manitoba, and a political leader of the Métis people of the Canadian Prairies. He led two rebellions against the government of Canada and its first

post‑Confederation prime minister, John A. Macdonald. Riel sought to preserve Métis rights and culture as their homelands in the Northwest came progressively under the Canadian sphere of influence. Over the decades, he has been made a folk hero by some Canadian groups and is celebrated annually on the third Monday in February.

DAUPHIN ART GROUP The Dauphin Art Group is one of the oldest ongoing groups at the Watson Art Centre. Dr. Vernon Watson, whom the facility is named after, was the first to offer painting and drawing instruction to people in the area in the 1960s. The Dauphin Art Group is a not-for-profit organization that encourages the development of arts within the region. Artist-instructed workshops are organized for those who want to expand or refresh their skills for painting, drawing, and other visual arts media. Workshops encompass a variety of media including oils, acrylics, watercolour, pen and ink, charcoal, graphite, how to use/mix colours, and set up your palette. Try your hand at various mediums and

take on a lifelong hobby that is good for the soul! Members of the group have access to the art studio and can come and go as their time allows. Membership is $60 annually, due in January of each year, and workshop fees are due upon registration. DAUPHIN POTTERY & CERAMICS CLUB The Dauphin Pottery and Ceramics club is a community group that provides instruction and a place for people of all ages to create and showcase ceramics and pottery. The club has been in existence since 1967 and currently has a studio in the basement of the Watson Art Centre. There are several kilns, wheels, and many moulds for the members to use. Classes and workshops are offered in a variety of techniques. Membership cost is reasonable and allows members to work at their own pace and convenience. The fee covers the use of the studio, the equipment, and firing of their pieces. Supplies are the responsibility of the individuals and group activities are pre‑arranged as needed. PARKLAND WOMEN’S CHOIR The Parkland Women’s Choir grew from conversations while traveling back to Dauphin from Cantata practice in the winter of 2015. At that time, there was a lack of choral singing for women in the workforce in the area. More than 20 women joined the very first practice and they have since grown to over 40 women! The choir prides itself on the high standard of performance that has been reached in a short period of time and the fun they have performing for the residents in the Dauphin community.

Multi-Purpose Senior Centre and local personal care homes, Christmas parties, Christmas caroling, hosting “A Taste of Christmas” and several evenings of music supporting their local food bank. They are often heard singing together with the Keystone Chorus and a trio called Stringed Harmony.

KEYSTONE CHORUS Dauphin’s Keystone Chorus celebrates their 49th year in 2021! Annually, the traditional barbershop-style group sings four-part harmony and hosts various concerts throughout the community, performs for various establishments, and is the local source for the “singing Valentine”. THEATRE AMISK

Dauphin and surrounding communities have had a long, deep tradition of amateur theatre. From stage performances by Dauphin Dramatic Society in the mid‑1920s to the formation of Dauphin’s Little Theatre in 1930, came the official incorporation of Theatre Amisk of Dauphin in 1982. Theatre Amisk continues to flourish and offer an array of 1-3 act plays, improv, musicals, classes and workshops. This non‑profit community group provides both entertainment to the public and training to its members. Theatre Amisk is also a member of the Association of Community Theatre (ACT) Manitoba. Since 1979, ACT has held an annual provincial festival during the first weekend

of May. Dauphin’s members have attended, performed and hosted this festival. In 1995, the improv troupe Theatre on the Edge was founded by several Theatre Amisk members. Since then different members have been successful in learning and performing many improv productions in Dauphin and other communities. Theatre Amisk usually meets annually in the fall and spring to review past productions, and to plan future productions, classes and workshops. DAUPHIN’S COMMUNITY BAND

Community Bands have been a part of Manitoba’s heritage for more than a century. The Dauphin Community Band and Jazz Band, originally known as the Dauphin Boy’s Band, dates back to 1903 and has been a part of Dauphin’s community since its beginning. Fast forward to 2021, both ensembles continue to rehearse and perform throughout the Dauphin community and surrounding areas. The bands are made up of community members of all ages and all abilities. The Dauphin Friendship Centre (DFC) is a local non-profit charitable organization that offers programs and services not only for residents of our area, but also to those who are visiting us from near and far. The primary services visitors to our community access through the DFC include: • Free use of telephone for local calls and free long distance calls if relating to employment, health, or education issues; • 24-hour free Wi-Fi access; • Free use of computers for internet access during regular business hours; • Free faxing, printing, and photocopying for education, employment and health reasons (otherwise there is only a small fee); • Free videoconferencing capabilities for those who can’t completely leave work at the office; • Made-in-Manitoba items for sale including handcrafted items, moccasins, Indigenous art as well as supplies for making some of these items; • Tourist information including local maps and directions to your destination;
