While you’re making plans for your next camping getaway, use our handy checklist to ensure you have all the gear packed and on hand to make your outing comfortable and enjoyable.

GETTING YOUR RV READY FOR WINTER It’s late autumn and you’ve come to the sad realization that RVing season, at least in Manitoba, has come to an end. Unless you’re heading south to warmer climes, it's time to park the RV for the winter. Here’s a quick checklist to ensure your valuable investment weathers the winter, ready to hit the road next spring. Check the tires and inflate them to the recommended pressure. If parking your RV on asphalt, place plywood under the tires to prevent oils in the asphalt from reacting with the rubber. Give the exterior a good wash and apply a good coat of wax. Your RV's exterior paint job can fade from exposure to sunlight, even in the winter. Clean and wash the vehicle’s interior surfaces and storage compartments. Be on the lookout for food residue that could be a temptation for insects and other pests. This is a good time to look for holes and cracks that need filling. To prevent mould from forming, leave cabinet doors open and allow the interior to dry completely.

Check for cracks and tears in the exterior and roof. Apply patches and sealants. Don’t make it easy for rodents and other pests to gain entry or nest in the RV. Cover exterior openings, such as vents and pipes, with screen or mesh. Put some rodent traps in the RV just in case. And remove any potential nesting matierals, such as newspapers, clothing and towels. Remove any items from the RV that could freeze. Run RV antifreeze through water lines. Reduce humidity and the resulting musty odours by leaving the roof vents open (with vent covers in place). Place a box of baking soda in the refrigerator. Remove the RV’s batteries and store them in a warm, dry location. In addition to making sure any gas appliances are turned off, turn off the RV’s gas supply valve.

Pull down the daylight window shades to prevent fading of interior fabrics while still allowing some light to enter the interior to discourage the growth of mould. If you’re not storing your RV indoors, consider a breathable fabric cover to allow for air flow and reduce mildew from forming under the cover.

TIPS FOR STRESS-FREE MEALS Food is an important part of the camping experience. We all have memories of a favourite camp meal, cooked over glowing coals and enjoyed in the open air. If you’re the designated camp cook (self-appointed or otherwise!), you’ll want to maximize the amount of time you spend having fun and minimize the amount of time you spend doing meal prep. Here are a few things to consider. 1. Start with a plan. Determine how many meals you’ll need, and how many people you’ll be cooking for. Choose your meals based on how much time you want to spend cooking. If you’ll be on the go most of the time, simpler meals are in order. 2. Be food safe. Foods can spoil quickly in the summer heat. Choose items that store and travel well. 3. Not every meal needs to be a cooked meal. Preparing a meal over the campfire takes time and patience. Don’t overdo it. Plan some grab-andgo dishes, preferably prepared in advance (see #5).

6. Freeze some of your meals. If you don’t have access to a camper/ RV refrigerator, prepare and freeze foods to increase the time they can be stored in your cooler. Eat the most perishable foods first. 7. Don’t forget the snacks. Between meals, when you’re out hiking and adventuring, you’re going to get hungry more quickly. Pack your favourite nuts, dried fruit and trail mix. 8. Don’t forget the equipment. Use our handy checklist on page 7 to ensure your camp kitchen is well-stocked.

4. Take the season and weather into account. You'll look forward to coldplate meals on hot summer days. For the shoulder seasons, with cool mornings and evenings, hot foods will be welcome. Soup, anyone?

5. Prep what you can at home. Chop the veggies, cook the bacon, and boil the pasta. You’ll invest some time upfront getting ready, but you’ll appreciate the time you save later.
