Hello Again March 20, 2013 A few years ago I was introduced to Garrison Keillor, the host of the Prairie Home Companion – not in person but through his national radio program along with his friends and childhood neighbors in his imaginary village of Lake Woebegone, Minnesota. Since that intro, we have attended one of his outdoor summer concerts, complete with his formal black suit and red sneakers, and have grown to be regular listeners of his Prairie Home Companion radio program. Garrison appears to have an unusual knack to create, find and play unusual musical pieces, poetry and other little comical ditties. His almost real Hillbilly country program about Lake Woebegone seems to send me down memory lane to my childhood village, a sort of for-real Lake Woebegone. His Prairie Home Companion group will be at Tanglewood just prior to the 4th of July this year. We did not have Garrison’s beautiful Lake Woebegone. We had to settle for the Cherry Valley Creek with a few favorite swimming and fishing holes. Every curve in the creek created its very own playground. We didn’t have the powder milk biscuit plant. We did have church and the ladies’ community club dinners and programs. For our one-upmanship on Lake Woebegone, we did have our own one-of-a-kind wonderment which Lake Woebegoners had to live without – Floyd Dean, our all-around fix-it man. Likeable, loveable country character and charmer. Master of off-color jokes, the latest in gossip and questioner supreme. His wardrobe everyday remained unchanged: a gray striped engineer’s cap, gold-rimmed glasses, gray bib overalls, red handkerchief hanging from a rear pocket with a dollar watch in his bib pocket attached to a leather strap. On rainy days only, he wore red ball barn boots – you know, the kind with the white soles. All of the kids, dogs, and men folk were drawn to Mr. Floyd. He could be generous, on occasion, while poking in an additional chaw of Red Man or BeechNut chewing tobacco. He would hand over the package – even to us kids, then laugh. Floyd, with his blacksmith shop, offered a constant amusement-gathering place for us kids. He entertained mostly boys while he repaired and often rebuilt farm machinery, car and truck body repairs; sharpened hand, crosscut and bucksaws; formed horseshoes and U-bolts, along with harness repair.
An occasional crank on the bellows’ handle kept colorful sparks heading upward, with music provided by a hammer striking on the large anvil, which sat on an old tree stump next to the forge.
The following two pictures are examples of homes built in yester-year in this valley – our valley. Just a glance will show the owners and builders loved this area and believed in the ability of this area to grow and stay prosperous.
Early every other Saturday morning we would hang around his blacksmith-machine shop watching, listening, wondering if we should bother him to say we needed a haircut. Sunday was only one morning away and we didn’t even dare to think about attending church and Sunday School without having our pants freshly pressed, shoes shined, along with our hair properly groomed - which included white walls around and above the ears. It didn’t seem fair all the girls had to do was comb-brush-tie their hair in pigtails with a white ribbon and act pretty. “Well,” I say, “who says life is fair?” Eventually the music from the hammer and anvil would stop and he would announce – “Time for hair cuts.” Another 25 minutes would go by and we would parade over to the back door of his house. Floyd would set his chaw of tobaccy on the window sill (he’d place the cheek-puffing cud on the window sill for a later chew) – spit out the remaining tobacco and juice and lead us through the kitchen into his living room complete with a barber chair, combs-brushes, straight razors, and hand clippers. Then he became the village barber. A few minutes later and 25 cents lighter, we would charge out the front door and head for home. That was our very special time – if everything had gone alright during the past week, we would get our 5 cent weekly allowance. Sometimes I would save my 5 cents for a week until the next Saturday and buy a bottle of 5-cent Pepsi-cola and a 5cent package of cupcakes. They couldn’t have had such a delight in Lake Woebegone. Years later when Floyd Dean passed on, Barnie Snyder, with Floyd’s old chair and hand clippers, became our barber, right next to a chunk stove in his living room. No mirrors, just a big yellow cat in Barnie’s favorite over-stuffed chair. When the haircut was over, he would quickly pass a handheld mirror around our head and declare, “Looks good to me!” I remember someone complaining about Barnie’s 25-cent charge. He said he did not have as much experience as Floyd Dean and should not charge as much. Can this question be asked without bending someone’s nose? Have we, the majority of the adult residents of the Mohawk Valley, lost our ability to dream, plan, and act?
Our president, Mr. Obama, has said over T.V. that he will not cut back on funding any programs unless taxes go up. I believe he really means he will not cut back on spending even if taxes go up. What do you think? Taxes should go up…..? Or not……? My question is – if a family is nearly broke and living on borrowed money, how can they get out of debt by paying more taxes and not backing off with their spending? When we spend what is not already ours, how can the future improve? Spring is getting ready to be sprung. Soon the snow will leave and springtime flowers will share their beauty. All four seasons share their special happiness. Springtime is my favorite, when everything in God’s creation comes alive. The Bible reminds us to be thankful in everything. Say hi to your neighbor. Turn the other cheek. Make yourself happier – attend church on Sunday. Thanks for supporting the Pennysaver through your readership.

by David Uffington How accurate is your credit report? Consumers are allowed to get a free copy of their credit report each year. Chances are that most only send for it when a problem arises with a loan or a hike in insurance rates. A better tactic is to send for the report annually and check it closely for accuracy. Look for errors about whether your bills have been paid on time, if you’ve paid more than the minimum payment, and your percentage of credit availability used. All of these affect your credit score. The Federal Trade Commission recently completed the fifth segment of its ongoing study
about the accuracy of consumer credit reporting by the Big Three: TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Here are some of the things the FTC discovered: • Five percent of consumers had a seriousenough error to cause them to have to pay higher interest for loans and insurance. • One in five had an error on at least one report. • One in four had errors that could affect their credit score. • One in five had an error that was eventually corrected after it was disputed. • Four out of five who disputed an error had a modification to their credit report. • One in 10 had a
change in their FICO score after the errors were corrected. • One in 20 had a FICO score change of more than 25 points; one in 250 had a change of more than 100 points. Nowadays, it’s important to check for someone else’s name on your report. This information often is at the very end under an “Also Known As” section. If your name is Thomas J. Smith and you’ve never opened a line of credit with “TJ Smith” or “Tom Smith” and you see an alternate name on your reports, beware that someone might have been using your credit or there might be a conflict between files. Dollars and sense the FTC, call it at 877FTC-HELP (877-3824357). The Big Three reporting agencies are: TransUnion, 800-916-8800; Equifax, 800-685-1111; and Experian, 888-3973742 Scrutinizing your credit report once a year and then disputing any errors is the best way to keep your FICO score as high as it legitimately should be. Get your reports (from all three agencies) at AnnualCreditReport.com, or call 877-322-8228. In some states you’re allowed two free reports per year. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

If you have a chronic condition like hypertension or diabetes, a carefully planned diet can have a significant impact on managing your symptoms and improving your health. During National Nutrition Month®, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages consumers to develop a healthful eating plan that is centered on personal health concerns and “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day.” “While many people understand the role diet plays in overall health, you can actually prevent and manage specific diseases by eating healthfully, as well,” said registered dietitian and Academy spokesperson Angela Lemond. “For instance, eating heart-healthy foods can help lower high blood pressure, which reduces
the risk of both heart attack and stroke. Even if you do not have high blood pressure, eating a heart-healthy diet reduces your chances of heart disease in the future,” Lemond said. “A healthy eating plan that keeps health concerns in mind will also incorporate individual needs including personal nutrient requirements, food preferences, lifestyle and level of physical activity,” Lemond said. She offers tips to “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day” while also preventing and managing some of the most common food-related medical conditions: Hypertension and heart disease • Balance calories with physical activity to manage weight. • Increase the variety of nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables,
whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products and seafood. • Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars and refined grains. Diabetes “To successfully manage diabetes, you need to understand how foods and nutrition affect your body,” said Lemond. “Good health depends on eating a variety of foods that contain the right amounts of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats, as well as vitamins, minerals, fiber and water.” • Eat meals and snacks at regularly scheduled times. • Eat about the same amount of food at each meal or snack. • Choose healthful foods to support a healthy weight and heart
including whole-grain breads, cereals, pastas and rice; vegetables and beans; fruits; lean meat, fish, poultry and tofu; low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese and yogurt; and healthy fats like olive oil. • Carbohydrates affect your blood sugar more than protein or fat. Keep track of the amount of carbohydrates you eat to ensure your blood sugar stays in good control. Food allergies and intolerances “When foods are cut from your diet, you may be short-changing yourself on important vitamins and minerals,” said Lemond. “A registered dietitian can help ensure you get the nutrition you need for your health and lifestyle.” • Learn about ingredients in foods. Eggs, wheat, milk and other food allergens often are
Factors that might hurt a home’s value Nowadays, homeowners looking to sell their homes know it’s not as easy to do so as it might have been a few years ago. A struggling economy has made it difficult for many homeowners to sell their homes for a price they’re comfortable with. But the sagging economy is not the only thing can make it difficult to sell a home. In fact, a host of other things, some obvious but some not so obvious, can hurt a home’s value as well. • Location: A home’s location is arguably its best or worst selling point. A home in a great location won’t be as difficult to sell as a home in a bad neighborhood. But location goes beyond a neighborhood’s reputation, especially in recent years. Homeowners who live in a neighborhood or development with many foreclosures might find those foreclosed properties are hurting their own home’s value. Lots of foreclosures could negatively affect a neighborhood’s reputation, which might make a home within that neighborhood less attractive to prospective buyers. • Appearance: A home’s appearance is another obvious variable that might affect its resale value. Homeowners might want their home to reflect their own individuality, but that’s not going to help when the time comes to sell the home. If the exterior paint is out of the ordinary, then it might be wise to choose a more traditional or conservative color before erecting the “For Sale” sign out front. The same goes for a home’s interior. If the interior design is especially unique, a more traditional interior decor might help the home sell faster. • Size and style: Another thing to consider when selling a home is its size and style. A home that stands out on the block might be an attention-grabber, but that’s not always attractive to prospective buyers. For instance, a colonial sitting in the middle of a street filled with contemporary homes will stand out, but likely for all the wrong reasons. It will likely appear dated and out of place, which is something buyers might not want. In addition, if the home is considerably larger or smaller than the surrounding homes, then this could hurt its value. • Non-conformity: In many ways, conformity is not considered an admirable trait. But when selling a
home, conformity could make the difference between a home selling quickly or remaining on the market for months if not years. When shopping for a home, buyers often shop in certain neighborhoods and towns and might see many different homes within a given ZIP code. Homeowners with homes that don’t conform to others in the area might find it difficult to sell their homes. For instance, homeowners trying to sell a two bedroom home in a neighborhood filled with three bedroom homes might notice their home’s value is not as high as that of surrounding homes, regardless of the neighborhood or how similar the home’s exterior is to surrounding homes. • Age: Older homes might have character and a sense of nostalgia, but appraisers take age into consideration when determining a home’s value. And buyers tend to lean toward newer homes for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the feeling that newer homes have far more modern amenities than older homes. When it comes to a home’s value, there are a host of things that could ultimately increase or decrease that value in the eyes of prospective buyers.
called by other names. Food companies specify on product labels if any major allergens are contained in the food. • Read labels carefully. Manufacturers might change ingredients of products without notice, so double-check ingredient labels every time you buy a food, even a familiar one. • Talk with your day care, school and workplace. Make sure school faculty and staff are aware of your child’s food allergies and that they know how to respond to adverse reactions your child may experience. Similarly, inform your coworkers of allergies you have. Some people are familiar with food allergies and know what to do if a person has a reaction; others may not and will need your help in keeping your risk for exposure low. Obesity • Establish a new balance between calories consumed and calories burned through physical activity. • Include fiber-rich
foods like fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains, which offer plenty of vitamins and minerals without plenty of calories while keeping you feeling full longer. • Watch portion sizes to help manage calorie intake and cut back on empty calories from added sugars. “No matter which health concern you have, you need a registered dietitian on your team who will work with you to put together a daily meal plan that takes into account your food preferences, level of physical activity and lifestyle,” said Lemond. As part of this public education campaign, the Academy’s National Nutrition Month website includes a variety of helpful tips, games, promotional tools and nutrition education resources, all designed to spread the message of good nutrition around the “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day” theme.

Easy ways to boost home value Though the housing market might not be booming, there are still buyers out there looking for a place to call their own. Some potential sellers might prefer a patient approach to selling their homes, choosing to do so when the market rebounds and homes regain some of their lost value. Other sellers might not have a choice and must make due with selling in a lackluster market. Regardless of which category you’re in, there are easy ways to boost your home’s value. Making minor changes to a home can add to your asking price, whether you’re putting your home on the market this week or waiting for the market to rebound. The following tasks might not take much effort, but they pay dividends. • Work on the yard. An appealing lawn is still a great way to catch a prospective buyer’s eye. When a home
boasts a lush lawn and well-manicured trees, it’s hard to ignore that For Sale sign out front. If landscaping has proven an Achilles’ heel in the past, make an effort to take better care of your property in the months ahead. It doesn’t take long for even the most neglected lawn to rebound from disrepair. By the time you feel confident to put that for sale sign out front, you might just be putting it up in a lush lawn no buyer can resist. • Upgrade appliances. Prospective buyers won’t be thrilled if they walk into a home and see outdated appliances. Some might even feel older appliances indicate a homeowner who cared little about appearances and might begin to wonder if there are any additional areas that might have been neglected around the house. Stainless steel appliances in the kitchen and even new fixtures in the bathroom are aesthetically appealing and tend to excite buyers. Homeowners who aren’t immediately putting their property up for sale can gradually upgrade their appliances to lessen some of the financial toll such purchases take. • Replace the carpet. A clean carpet might make a world of difference to a home’s inhabitants, but a new
carpet will be more appealing to prospective buyers. Choose a neutral-toned carpet that will boast a more universal appeal. • Paint the home. A fresh coat of paint or new siding is always attractive to prospective buyers. If your home hasn’t had a new coat of paint in awhile that might make buyers feel the home is musty or old. Many buyers judge a book by its cover, and sellers want their home’s exterior to be as attractive as possible. Homeowners can also paint rooms inside the home to give it a fresh and welcoming feel. • Clean up around the house. A cluttered house will almost certainly repel buyers. Buyers want a home that’s roomy and well kept, but clutter creates the opposite impression. Organize the closets to make them appear more roomy and clean up any areas that have become cluttered — consider temporarily renting a storage unit to house excess stuff from closets. Basements or utility closets might be handy for storage, but they should be open and clean before hosting an open house. The less clutter a home has, the more spacious it will appear and the more money sellers can likely demand for the home.

(StatePoint) — If you’re considering buying a home, some experts think you should get a move on it. Interest rates are at 65-year record lows and national home prices have finally hit bottom and are on the rise. Despite what you may be hearing, loans are available for those with good credit histories, stable income and sufficient savings. But don’t jump right in unprepared. Whether you’re a seasoned buyer or a newbie, there are strategies that can help you throughout the home-buying process: Stick to your budget Determining how much “home you can afford” depends on several factors, including your annual gross income, credit history, current mortgage

rates and the amount of your down payment. In today’s market, you can expect a down payment to generally be between 5 to 20 percent of the purchase price for a conventional mortgage. Lenders recommend that your mortgage payment (principal, interest, taxes and mortgage insurance) be less than 28 percent of your monthly gross income. Before looking for a home, consider calling a Department of Housing and Urban Developmentapproved housing counselor for free and confidential financial assistance. Avoid borrowing pitfalls Unscrupulous lenders can damage your credit and cause you financial hardship. Here are some ways to avoid becoming a victim: • Say ‘no’ to easy money. Beware if someone claims that your “credit problems won’t affect the interest rate.” If a solicitation is really appealing, get it in writing and seek
a second opinion. • Talk to several lenders to find the best loan. • Know if the loan offered to you charges a fee if you pay it off early. If it’s a requirement of the loan, ask about other products that don’t contain this type of penalty. • Ensure documents are correct and complete. Beware of anyone offering to falsify your income information to qualify you for a loan. Never sign documents that have incorrect dates or blank fields. • Ask for written estimates that include all points and fees. When you get to the closing table, if any fees or charges differ from what was previously disclosed, delay closing until all terms are understood. • If you’re taking equity out of your property, only take the minimum. Equity typically builds slowly over time, so it’s important to try to preserve it. • If you’re not sure, don’t sign! Get advice first from a reputable
consumer credit counseling agency or housing counselor. Know the mortgage process Mortgages are serious long-term financial commitments. Selecting the right mortgage may make a big difference in your monthly payments and overall cost of your loan. To determine the best term for your personal situation and one that aligns with your financial goals, talk with your lender or financial professional for guidance. More home-buying tips can be found at www.FreddieMac.com. The prospect of making such a big investment can be intimidating, especially if you’re a first time homebuyer. Do your research, reach out to the professionals, stick to your budget and be sure you’re ready to take on the financial responsibilities of being a homeowner.

Five must-haves for your new truck (BPT) — With a brand new truck decorating your driveway, you’ve probably got plenty of ideas of how you’re going to use it for towing a boat, transporting large and heavy loads and conquering rugged terrain. Or maybe you just want to feel powerful while driving it down the road. But before you get too comfortable, think about what could make your truck even better. What can you add that will help your truck last longer, handle more tasks and look even stronger? Here are the five must-haves
for all new truck owners to add to their vehicle. 1. Mud flaps — This detail is both a decoration item — show some style with a powerful diamond plate pattern or cheer on your favorite sports team everywhere you drive — and a safety item. Mud flaps help prevent your truck from throwing moisture and rocks back at vehicles following you, and they also help to keep the back end of your truck cleaner — so other drivers can see you in inclement weather. 2. Protective bedliner coating — A spray-on
truck bedliner will give the bed additional protection from corrosion and abrasions, resist damage from chemicals and water, and keep objects stored in the bed from slipping and sliding around during travels. With this protective coating, your truck bed will look good for years to come. 3. Tie-down equipment — What is a truck better
for than transporting large and heavy objects? Equip your new truck with tie-down anchor points and straps or ropes so they’ll be handy whenever you need them. Be sure to attach the anchor points at strategic places in the bed or along the bed rails so you can secure both large and small loads. 4. Tool box — Just like the tie-down equipment,
you never know when you’re going to need a tool while you’re out and about with your truck. Sometimes the tools are for the truck itself — lug nut wrench, jack, screw drivers, etc. — but a wide assortment of tools can come in handy for many other uses as well. 5. Cover — For better fuel mileage with your new truck, install a hard or roll-up cover over the
bed to help give the truck better aerodynamics, and to help protect what’s stored in the bed from the elements. Some covers are lockable, allowing you to securely store more valuable equipment as well. With these five musthaves, your truck is now ready to handle any task you assign to it, with plenty of power.
What you need to know when buying a used car (NAPSA) — Buying a used car is becoming an increasingly common practice. In fact, it’s estimated that just over three used cars are now purchased for every new one sold. However, just because many people do it, doesn’t mean it’s easy to find the used car that’s right for you. Fortunately, doing a little homework before buying can keep a driver on the road to safety, savings and satisfaction. To help, here are a few tips from the experts at AutoTrader.com and OnStar: • Consider purchasing a certified preowned vehicle: Certified preowned vehicles usually come with extended warranties and have been thoroughly inspected before being sold. • Make sure the vehicle you’re considering is functional for everyone who will be traveling in it: If searching for a used family vehicle, bring the whole family on an extended test-drive to make sure everyone is comfortable with the vehicle. If you have small children, make sure child safety seats fit and can easily be installed in the vehicle. • Purchase a vehicle history report report and have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic: By taking both of these actions, you will reduce the chance of unexpected issues later on down the road. • Ask about promotional programs: Many manufacturers offer specific incentives to purchase their used vehicles. For instance, buyers of used GM vehicles equipped with OnStar are eligible to receive a threemonth free trial of its Directions & Connections package. • Secure your financing in advance: Because used vehicle loans can vary when it comes to interest rates, visit a bank or credit union before making a final decision so you can be sure you’re receiving the best interest rate. • Don’t negotiate price based on what you want your monthly payment to be: Monthly payments can always be lowered to fit your budget by extending the length of the loan. Negotiations should be made based on the price of the car, rather than the monthly payment. • The sale process continues past the acceptance of an offer: After both parties agree upon an appropriate price, dealers usually will offer extra accessories and services you might not be interested in. Be sure to stand firm and make it clear that you are not interested in paying more than the previously agreed upon price. For more information on OnStar, visit www.OnStar.com. For more information on AutoTrader, visit www.AutoTrader.com.
