Pruning grasses and other April gardening tips by Charlie Nardozzi, Horticulturist and Leonard Perry, UVM Extension Horticulturist Pruning back ornamental grasses, getting patio containers ready for planting, and starting dahlias indoors are some of the gardening activities for this month. If you left your ornamental grasses intact last fall for their fall and winter effect, and for seeds for birds, you can go ahead and prune them back to a height of about 6 to 12 inches. If you remove the old growth before new growth starts, and don’t cut back too close to the ground, you won’t risk damaging new sprouts when they emerge with warm weather later in spring. Add prunings to the compost pile, but the thick stems of some grasses should be shredded or cut up first so they’ll decompose more quickly. When planting large containers for the deck or patio, save on soil by creating a false bottom. Most of the plants you’ll use don’t need more than about a foot of soil depth for their roots, so put some empty plastic soda or water bottles in the very bottom, then cover

with landscape fabric or a piece of cardboard cut to fit to keep the soil from eroding. Plastic pots turned upside down also work, as do coarse and inexpensive wood shavings. Some use those Styrofoam packing “peanuts” (put in plastic bags so they’re easily handled and contained). To control annual weeds in the lawn, spread corn gluten meal with your lawn spreader when forsythia are blooming. That’s when many weed seeds, such as crabgrass, are germinating. It’s a safe, organic option for preventing the germination of weeds, and it provides a small dose (maybe 9 percent) of nitrogen fertilizer. The best controls for weeds, however, remain a good soil conducive to growing grass, and proper lawn culture. While safe and environmentally friendly, corn gluten products can be expensive with such a demand now for corn-derived products from corn syrup to ethanol. A 20 to 25 pound bag, depending on product, may treat 1000 square feet of lawn or beds, and cost around $30. This means to treat a quarter acre lawn, you may need to spend $300

or so. Like all “pre-emergent” weed killers, corn gluten will keep seeds from germinating. So make sure any desirable flowers or vegetables have germinated, and have “true” leaves, before applying around them. Get flowers sooner on dahlias by potting up tubers and growing them indoors until it’s warm enough to plant them outside. Pinch the growing tips when they get 6

inches tall to keep the growth short and stocky for easier transplanting into the garden. Keep them in a cool place, such as garage, so they don’t grow too fast. To get a head-start on fresh greens, sow seeds in a large, shallow container. Keep the container outside during the day and bring it in at night if the temperatures dip below freezing, or protect it in a cold frame. A window

box with colorful greens is not only ornamental, but makes for easy picking and protection from hungry rabbits. Woody perennials differ in the way they should be cut back in spring. If butterfly bush has died to the ground, cut the dead stems to the ground. Otherwise just shorten them by about one third. Cut back Russian sage, rue, and artemisias to about 8 to 12 inches from the

ground. Don’t prune lavender until new growth appears, and then just shorten the stems by about one-third. Heather should be lightly pruned to remove the old flowers and the tips of the shoots, but don’t cut back to brown wood, stay in the green. Wait until rose shoots and leaves emerge to prune, in order to know what stems died and which are living.

Hello Again April 3, 2013 Have you seen your first robin of the season? Who needs a calendar to know when springtime weather is just around the corner? We country folks have our own way of knowing. For example, the Parkside Restaurant in St. Johnsville is already open. As you know, Parkside is one of the favorite watering holes and they are open seven days each week. This year, they are offering some new specials. Grandma, along with Gramps, is still digging Granny’s roadside eatery out from under the winter snow. They may be open before you read this. If you can’t wait, bring a snow shovel and a strong back. If they are not open, I will buy you all the soft ice cream you can eat and none after they open. Maybe I should explain why I will not buy you soft ice cream at Granny’s. This Hello Again column is now read in over 20,000 homes with an average of over 3.5 residents in each home. That’s well over 70,000 ice cream eaters. I may be slow but am neither rich or Santa — as you know he drives a big red cattle truck during the warm weather season. We have not poked fun at the clergy or church-goers in several months, so it must be their turn. I believe even the good Lord enjoys a harmless joke once in a while. This little bit of chatter was told to me as true. The former owner of the Daniel Green Slipper Company in Dolgeville enjoyed his summers at his camp near Otsego Lake, played golf at the Ryerson-Otsego golf course, and attended church in Cooperstown. A fellow golfer — known to all as Coach — also played golf and ushered at the same church. So that you will better understand this chatter, while Coach was a good golfer and a grand guy, he was also quite deaf. One Sunday while ushering and passing the collection basket, he handed the basket to our Dolgeville friend. Due to his deafness — he did not realize how loud his voice was and with the church in near silence — he said in a loud voice, “You can do better than that.” You can take bets that everyone present knew they both were in church that day. It may be the best homily ever remembered.

In keeping with our church collection basket chatter, it was told that a little tot along with his Dad watched while the ushers were passing the collection plates. When the usher stopped at the little fellow’s pew, in a rather loud voice said, “Don’t pay for me Daddy. I’m under five.” So we think we are a better educated, more advanced society with more and better benefits than those of yester years? I have a photocopy of an envelope mailed by the war department to Charles Walter Vosburgh of Palatine Bridge, NY dated April 18, 1919. The paid postage was one cent. Citizens could mail a 1st class letter for one penny and now we have to pay nearly a half buck. Are we advancing backwards? In the issue of February 16, 2013 we published a list of the men and women from this area who served our country in

the so-called war to end all wars: the World War. Charles R. Vosburgh of Palatine Bridge graciously allowed us to copy the honorable discharge papers of his grandfather, a World War I veteran. I believe his father was the Montgomery County sheriff.

our family history in America is basically only four generations old. We love America but we are as Irish as Paddy’s pig. Wouldn’t it be interesting to learn the family names now living in our valley? Whose family name was part of our list of those who served in the first World War, second World War, and even the Civil War?

One good deed deserves another. If you are in the market to buy hay or straw, give Mr. Vosburgh a call: 518993-3749. I’m sure he will be able to help.

This yarn is proof that it’s tough to beat apple pie. It seems that a Sunday School teacher was teaching her young class about heaven and hell. She said, “All of you students who want to go to Heaven say ‘I’.” Little Johnny Alone was mute. When his teacher asked, “Johnny, don’t you want to go to Heaven?” he said, “When Grandpa drove me to Sunday School this morning, Mom was baking a couple of apple pies.”

I found it very interesting to learn that the Vosburgh family name and the Nellis family branched from a common tree, or at least had common ancestors. It would be an interesting study to learn of the connections of the families living in the Mohawk Valley. For example, who was related to whom? In my case,

This afternoon while writing Hello Again, I had an interesting visit with a lady who says she has used her body as a human guinea pig/laboratory to study the affects of food as it pertains to her own health. She said she is 72 but in my opinion she talks, thinks, walks as a 30 year old. I should have asked her — “If some food does not seem to agree with you — is your body trying to warn you? Could it be causing more damage than you ever imagined? For example, one of my favorite dressings for a meat sandwich is mayo. My stomach has a continuing argument with mayo. Is it possible that it is causing some serious problem unknown to me?” Sunday to Christians will be the most important day of the year. The Bible teachers and I believe the day we call Easter, Jesus willingly obeyed God the Father, allowed his earthly human body to surrender to death on the cross so that we who believe will be forgiven of our sins, and will enjoy eternal life with him. Naturally this is a personal decision one must make — to believe in Christ or not. I do not suggest you have to — I just wish you would. Watch for the little red bike — when the robins come back, so will the bike — wave hello and may God bless you, your family, and friends.

Renovating an old orchard by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University of Vermont Perhaps you have property with some old apple trees, or perhaps you had a fruit tree orchard that has suffered from years of neglect due to other priorities. You’re faced with a decision if you want to make changes — should you get out a chainsaw or hire a tree service for such removals, or should you try and save the trees? If the latter, how should you begin? If you want to renovate an orchard, first assess which (if any) trees are worth saving. Follow a few simple pruning practices slowly over a few years to reclaim desirable trees. When deciding which fruit trees to save in a neglected orchard, keep in mind that a small number of well-cared-for trees will be far more productive and much more satisfying than a large orchard of even partially neglected ones. Those with good tasting fruit (even if small) are candidates to save. Their trunks should be solid

and firm, not hollow on the inside, nor falling apart. A worthy tree to save should have one trunk, not multiple ones growing in clumps (usually arising from “suckers” or offshoots of the original trunk, which may have died). If trees are evenly spaced apart, they were likely those planted and not seedlings that came up randomly. A few such trees from seedlings may be worth saving if they have good fruit or are ornamental. Trees worth renovating should have a good branching structure, with good lower branching, and of a good height and habit. Those either too tall (over 18 to 20 feet high) or short, or lopsided, or straggly (perhaps lower limbs were browsed off by animals), would be difficult to reclaim. Finally, consider if the trees are important either historically (they may be antique or heirloom cultivars seldom seen) or sentimentally (as in being planted by a relative). Once you’ve decided which trees to work on

saving, follow these steps. 1. Remove unwanted trees. These are ones that bear no fruit or none desirable, are too close together, are from seedlings, are weak and just too old, or are weedy — either fruiting or oth-

“water sprouts” will sap energy the main tree needs to regrow from subsequent pruning. 3. Burn or chip tree prunings to avoid keeping around any diseases. 4. The first year, lightly prune trees anytime, re-

first, so start gently. Prune whole limbs off, don’t just “head back” or prune the ends. Remove any old fruit. Check the soil pH or acidity (kits are available from your local Extension office and many complete garden

ers. 2. Remove sprouts arising from the base of trees you want to save. These

moving broken, diseased, or rubbing and crossing limbs. An old tree won’t tolerate severe pruning at

centers). Correct, if needed, to 6.5 to 7. Fertilize lightly in spring as with 100 pounds of dried ma-

nure spread evenly, or lightly with an organic complete fertilizer, or 5 to 7 pounds of 5-10-10, or similar. Then, in early summer, thin fruit when the size of marbles so that they are at least 6 inches apart, and only one in a cluster. Mow or mulch around trees during summer. Remove any “drops” (those fruit that fall off naturally in June, and during fall). Rake leaves up in fall. 5. The second year, when trees are dormant but temperatures above freezing, thin out some limbs to allow more light into the center, removing whole limbs. Remove weak or very old limbs first. Proceed with other culture as in the first year. 6. The third year, prune similar to year two, only more heavily. Follow culture as previously. 7. Finally, in subsequent years, prune normally with normal culture. More details on such culture to grow apples successfully can be found in the book The Fruit Gardener’s Bible.

by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University of Vermont Raspberries and blackberries are the two most common bramble fruits — those shrubs with edible berries, and generally with thorns. Although fairly easy to grow, there are a few cultural tips and pruning techniques which will help you to harvest not only a crop of fruit, but a bountiful one of beautiful berries. If you’re just planting a berry patch, make sure to choose cultivars (cultivated varieties) hardy and suited to your area. This is especially true if buying online from distant nurseries, or you live in a colder part of the north. Many cultivars of red, and fall-bearing yellow, raspberries are hardy through most of the north country. Be aware that red raspberries generally bear one crop in midsummer, but some that are often called fall or everbearing have two crops — one in summer and one in fall. This is important in how they are cared for. Black and purple rasp-

berries are generally less hardy, so look for hardier selections such as ‘Bristol’ or ‘Jewel’ black raspberry, and ‘Brandywine’ or ‘Royalty’ purple raspberry. Upright blackberries are generally the hardiest types, with the trailing and thornless ones generally less hardy. Some of the hardiest to USDA zone 5 (-10 to -20 degrees F average minimum in winter) include ‘Darrow’, ‘Illini’, and ‘Kiowa’. ‘Chester’ and ‘Triple Crown’ are somewhat hardy, semi-upright or trailing types. Once you’ve chosen and obtained your brambles, plant in a welldrained soil in full sun. As they like to spread, allow plenty of space and don’t plant near flower or vegetable beds. Best is an area where you can keep rows mowed. Amend the soil with plenty of compost prior to planting. If you’re planting bare-root plants, cut tops back to a couple inches above the ground after planting. If planting rooted plants in pots, don’t cut back. Space plants 2-feet apart in rows (farther

apart for trailing blackberries). Rows should be about 6-feet apart for raspberries, and perhaps 10-feet apart for blackberries. Often trailing blackberries need cross pollination between cultivars in order to fruit (so buy more than one), but most brambles are selffertile and will produce fruit just with the aid of bees (so you can have just one cultivar). Water well for the first few weeks, if little rain, until plants are established. If you have fertile soil you may only need compost at planting. Testing the soil with kits from your local Extension office will yield results on how much fertilizer and lime, if any, to add. Otherwise, use about 2 to 3 pounds of a low analysis, organic fertilizer such as 5-3-4 per 100 linear feet of row or a liquid fertilizer of your choice. Apply this again about a month after planting. Mulch with an organic material such as wood chips, straw, or shredded bark. In spring of the second year for raspberries, cut back to a couple inches

high all plants that didn’t grow vigorously the first year. This encourages maximum cane growth for a big crop the following year. Add to the mulch, and apply fertilizer as in year one. Fertilize two-crop cultivars again in mid-summer. Then, in fall of year two, cut tops of plants back so canes are about 4 feet tall. This makes a stiff plant that doesn’t fall over in winter’s snow and wind. Install a fence or other support if you didn’t already. This can be as simple as two strands of smooth wire on each side of the row between stakes, to keep future canes from falling over. In spring of future years, add fertilizer and mulch, as last year, to your raspberries. Trim out any broken canes. Spray with a fungicide according to label directions if you spot any evidence of spur blight, and reapply if needed in early summer. If young beautiful leaves in spring suddenly turn yellow, and the canes die, this is likely spur blight. During summer, keep plants watered if insufficient rain during the 3 to 4

weeks prior to harvest. Remove any wilted tips which are likely from the cane borer, a common pest. Cut off just below the two circles you see on the cane near the tip where you’ll often find the larvae inside, living and dining. Another common pest on this and other members of the rose family in summer is the Japanese beetle. Simply knock off into a pail of soapy water. If using traps for them, place far away from your berry bushes. The traps have powerful attractants, and beetles will feed on your plants before getting to the traps. Milky spore is useful on the beetle grubs only in warm climates. A recent pest causing great concern on soft fruits, including brambles, is the spotted wing drosophila. Late season fruits appear more vulnerable than those in summer. Like a fruit fly, this vinegar fly is so named as it is attracted to vinegar. So one control, and means for monitoring for this pest, is to hang plastic cups among your plants with apple cider vinegar. Use 32-ounce cups with several holes in the sides, and cover on top. Use a couple drops of dish detergent, which helps flies sink into the vinegar. The spotted wing drosophila first arrived on the west coast in 2008 from Asia, and has rapid-

ly spread east and into the northeast, thanks mainly to human transport of infected fruit and plants. The flies lay eggs in ripening fruit, which hatch into larvae in the ripe fruit. So one way to prevent this pest is to cover bushes before fruits ripen with a very fine mesh netting or fabric row cover, as used on vegetable crops. Anchor well to the ground. Pick fruit right as they ripen, and remove any old or dropped fruit. Look for organic sprays containing either spinosad, pyrethrin, or azadiractin (from the neem tree), and apply as appropriate and as listed on the label. In fall, cut one-crop raspberries to ground level and remove all the canes (“floricanes”) that bore fruit that season. These tend to be more woody and brittle, and lighter in color. Cut out all weak canes, and thin remaining first-year canes (those that did not fruit, the “primocanes”) to 6 inches apart. These will be the canes that bear fruit the following season. Cut back remaining canes to 4 to 5 feet high. If you’re growing two-crop cultivars just for their fall crops, you can cut all their canes back in late fall to a couple inches high, as they’ll bear fruit on canes produced the following summer. With the right care, you should get at least 10 years of harvests from your berry patch, often more, with first harvests the second year. Figure on one to two pints per mature plant, depending on cultivar and culture. For 4 people, depending on preference and uses, a guideline might be to plant 8 blackberry plants, 40 red raspberries, and 10 yellow or fall-crop raspberries. With such a patch you should have plenty for freezing (easy) and jams, in addition to fresh eating. If for fresh eating, choose several cultivars that ripen at different times. If for processing, you might choose ones that ripen at the same time for ease of handling. More details on culture of these and less common brambles such as dewberries, loganberries, and boysenberries, can be found in The Fruit Gardener’s Bible, by Lewis Hill and Leonard Perry.

NHTSA unveils ‘SaferCar’ app for iPhones Free mobile app provides real-time info to help consumers “Buy Safe, Drive Safe, and Stay Safe” WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a new iOS app for iPhones and iPod Touches that will provide real-time vehicle safety information to consumers from NHTSA’s SaferCar.gov site. NHTSA’s SaferCar app allows users to search its 5-Star Safety Ratings for vehicles by make and model, locate car seat installation help, file a vehicle safety complaint, find recall information and subscribe to automatic notices about vehicle recalls. NHTSA will also give developers real-time access to the data that powers this app through an Application Programming Interface (API), enabling them to integrate these data into new and existing apps and empowering consumers with important safety information. Millions of consumers already rely on these data to inform their purchasing decisions on popular automobile review sites; now they’ll be able to access these data in real-time.

“Safety is our highest priority, and we’re always working to find new and better ways for people to access SaferCar, one of the most popular programs on our website,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “This app takes advantage of the latest technology to ensure that consumers have the realtime information they need to buy safe, drive safe and stay safe.” The new SaferCar app gives consumers immediate access to key safety information to help them make informed decisions, with features including: • 5-Star Safety Ratings: Consumers considering vehicle purchases can look up crash test ratings and compare them across different makes and models. • Recalls and Complaints: App users can stay on top of safety issues for vehicles they already own. Consumers can register their vehicles to be notified by NHTSA if a safety issue is discovered. The app also makes it simple to submit complaints to NHTSA regarding possible safety prob-

lems with a particular vehicle. • Help Installing Child Seats: The app helps consumers ensure their most precious passengers ride safe. Users can quickly get driving directions to the nearest child seat inspection station and get assistance to properly install their car seats and boosters. •Safety Headlines and Alerts: App users can receive important news and information from NHTSA, as well as recall notices and push notices on their recorded vehicles. The announcement is just the first phase for the SaferCar app for iPhone and iPod Touch devices, which can be downloaded from Apple’s iTunes Store. Development is also underway for a version compatible with Android devices. The launch of the NHTSA app is part of ongoing efforts by the nation’s chief automotive safety agency to make it easier for consumers to access and submit information about important vehicle safety concerns. Earlier this year, the agency also updated re-

sources on its www.SaferCar.gov website to enable consumers to quickly locate information on specific safety defect investigations, complaints and vehicle recalls. The app launch coincides with the release of the NHTSA Application Programming Interface (API) — a new way to pro-

ly protecting privacy — has been a priority for the Obama Administration. The release of NHTSA data as an API is a continuation of that commitment. NHTSA intends to release an online course to teach developers how to use the new APIs. S o u r c e : www.nhtsa.gov

Put your tax refund to work; invest in your vehicle How will you spend your tax refund? Another flat-screen TV? An iPad? Clothes? The Car Care Council has a better idea for your money: spend it on your second biggest investment, your car. “Whether it’s an oil change, replacing brakes or new belts and hoses, that periodic repair bill is a drop in the bucket compared to monthly payments on a new car,” said Rich White, executive director Car Care Council. “The bottom line is that a properly maintained vehicle is safer, more dependable, more fuel efficient, less polluting and more valuable. The smartest way to get a solid return on investment is to keep your car through what we call the ‘Cinderella Era.’ It’s that period of time after the payoff when your car is still in great shape and needs only modest repairs.” With proper care, the typical vehicle should deliver at least 200,000 miles of safe, dependable performance. The most common maintenance procedures and repairs to keep your car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term value involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires and air conditioning. The council also recommends an annual tune-up and wheel alignment. “Last year, the average tax refund was nearly $3,000. By simply allocating a portion, or the equivalent of just one new car payment, consumers could cover an entire year’s worth of basic maintenance and live happily ever after with their current vehicle,” said White. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.
