Hello Again, March 16, 2013 A few years ago I was introduced to Garrison Keillor, the host of the Prairie Home Companion – not in person but through his national radio program along with his friends and childhood neighbors in his imaginary village of Lake Woebegone, Minnesota. Since that intro, we have attended one of his outdoor summer concerts, complete with his formal black suit and red sneakers, and have grown to be regular listeners of his Prairie Home Companion radio program. Garrison appears to have an unusual knack to create, find and play unusual musical pieces, poetry and other little comical ditties. His almost real Hillbilly country program about Lake Woebegone seems to send me down memory lane to my childhood village, a sort of for-real Lake Woebegone. His Prairie Home Companion group will be at Tanglewood just prior to the 4th of July this year. We did not have Garrison’s beautiful Lake Woebegone. We had to settle for the Cherry Valley Creek with a few favorite swimming and fishing holes. Every curve in the creek created its very own playground. We didn’t have the powder milk biscuit plant. We did have church and the ladies’ community club dinners and programs. For our one-upmanship on Lake Woebegone, we did have our own one-of-a-kind wonderment which Lake Woebegoners had to live without – Floyd Dean, our allaround fix-it man. Likeable, loveable country character and charmer. Master of off-color jokes, the latest in gossip and questioner supreme. His wardrobe everyday remained unchanged: a gray striped engineer’s cap, gold-rimmed glasses, gray bib overalls, red handkerchief hanging from a rear pocket with a dollar watch in his bib pocket attached to a leather strap. On rainy days only, he wore red ball barn boots – you know, the kind with the white soles. All of the kids, dogs, and men folk were drawn to Mr. Floyd. He could be generous, on occasion, while poking in an additional chaw of Red Man or BeechNut chewing tobacco. He would hand over the package – even to us kids, then laugh. Floyd, with his blacksmith shop, offered a constant amusement-gathering place for us kids. He entertained mostly boys while he repaired and often rebuilt farm machinery, car and truck body repairs; sharpened hand, crosscut and bucksaws; formed horseshoes and U-bolts, along with harness repair. An occasional crank on the bellows’ handle kept colorful sparks heading upward, with music provided by a hammer striking on the large anvil, which sat on an old tree stump next to the forge. Early every other Saturday morning we would hang around his blacksmith-machine shop watching, listening, wondering if we should bother him to say we needed a haircut. Sunday was only one morning away and we didn’t even dare to think about attending church and Sunday School without having our pants freshly pressed, shoes shined, along with our hair properly groomed - which included white walls around and above the ears. It didn’t seem fair all the girls had to do was comb-brush-tie their hair in pigtails with a white ribbon and act pretty. “Well,” I say, “who says life is fair?” Eventually the music from the hammer and anvil would stop and he would announce – “Time for hair cuts.” Another 25 minutes would go by and we would parade over to the back door of his house. Floyd would set his chaw of tobaccy on the window sill (he’d place the cheek-puffing cud on the window sill for a later chew) – spit out the remaining tobacco and juice and lead us through the kitchen into his living room complete with a barber chair, combs-brushes, straight razors, and hand clippers. Then he became the village barber. A few minutes later and 25 cents lighter, we would charge out the front door and head for home. That was our very special time – if everything had
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • March 16, 2013
Page 7
gone alright during the past week, we would get our 5 cent weekly allowance. Sometimes I would save my 5 cents for a week until the next Saturday and buy a bottle of 5-cent Pepsi-cola and a 5-cent package of cupcakes. They couldn’t have had such a delight in Lake Woebegone. Years later when Floyd Dean passed on, Barnie Snyder, with Floyd’s old chair and hand clippers, became our barber, right next to a chunk stove in his living room. No mirrors, just a big yellow cat in Barnie’s favorite over-stuffed chair. When the haircut was over, he would quickly pass a handheld mirror around our head and declare, “Looks good to me!” I remember someone complaining about Barnie’s 25-cent charge. He said he did not have as much experience as Floyd Dean and should not charge as much. Can this question be asked without bending someone’s nose? Have we, the majority of the adult residents of the Mohawk Valley, lost our ability to dream, plan, and act? The following two pictures are examples of homes built in yester-year in this valley – our valley. Just a glance will show the owners and builders loved this area and believed in the ability of this area to grow and stay prosperous.
Our president, Mr. Obama, has said over T.V. that he will not cut back on funding any programs unless taxes go up. I believe he really means he will not cut back on spending even if taxes go up. What do you think? Taxes should go up…..? Or not……? My question is – if a family is nearly broke and living on borrowed money, how can they get out of debt by paying more taxes and not backing off with their spending? When we spend what is not already ours, how can the future improve? Spring is getting ready to be sprung. Soon the snow will leave and springtime flowers will share their beauty. All four seasons share their special happiness. Springtime is my favorite, when everything in God’s creation comes alive. The Bible reminds us to be thankful in everything. Say hi to your neighbor. Turn the other cheek. Make yourself happier – attend church on Sunday. Thanks for supporting the Pennysaver through your readership.

Dollars and sense
by David Uffington How to Avoid Scams on Craigslist Most consumers are looking for bargains, and many cruise the Internet looking for low prices. While it’s possible to get good deals online, it’s also possible to be pulled into a scam, whether you’re buying or selling. Scambook (www. scambook.com) — billed as an online resolution platform dedicated to getting justice for consumers — has taken a close look at one popular national site, Craigslist (www. craigslist.org). Craigslist offers free online ads broken down by category and city. Ideally, with Scam-book’s list of caveats, you won’t need its resolu-
tion services. These tips can apply to nearly any website that lets people sell directly to others. • Trust your instincts. If an ad seems phony, don’t pursue it. • Stay local. It’s a red flag if someone makes up excuses about why they can’t meet, or why they want you to ship something. • Don’t get involved in cashier’s checks, money orders or wire transfers. Deal in cash only. If it’s a large amount of money, meet in a bank. • Use a counterfeitbill detection pen. You can get one for a few dollars at an office supply store. • Don’t use online escrow. These sites are typically run by scam-

Answers to this week’s puzzles
mers. • If buying, be sure to see the goods in person before you commit. At the same time, if someone wants to buy something you’re selling without even seeing it, beware. A scam is coming. • Beware of job scams. Chances are it’s an attempt to extract personal data from you. Visit the job’s location before you supply any information for a background check. • Beware ads that claim to be “certified” by Craigslist. • Check out the buyer/seller. You can use Scambook and Google to see if someone is who he claims to be. • Don’t give out personal information in a public ad online. Use
Google Voice to create a free disposable phone n u m b e r (https://voice.google.co m). • If a buyer has to collect an item at your home, put it outside and don’t let him in the house. Have a friend with you. Whenever you deal with an unknown person online, your risk doesn’t stop at potential identity theft. It can extend to robbery, harassment and even physical assault if you meet the person alone. Whether you’re looking for a snow blower, an apartment or a job, do your homework before committing to any deals. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

by Samantha Mazzotta Clearing a Sink Clog Q: Some time ago, you mentioned that a clogged sink can be cleared using a plumber’s snake. Where can I find one, and how do I use it? — Jerrold in West Virginia A: A plumber’s snake is a tool that has a flexible steel cable extending from a spool and handcrank assembly, with a wire snarl on the far end. You’ll sometimes see it referred to as a cable auger, but if you refer to it as the former, experienced people will understand. It can be purchased at any homeimprovement store for around $25. The salesperson might ask what
you’re using the tool for. There are longer cables, up to 100 feet, as well as versions like closet augers (which are specifically for toilet clogs) and power augers (which are rented by the day, and something I wouldn’t recommend for a first-timer or a small clog). To clear a sink clog, you should try a couple of other tricks before shelling out money for the plumber’s snake. First try a plunger, making sure the bell completely covers the drain and touches the sink surface in order to create a vacuum. Plunge up and down about 15 times. If the sink drains, run hot water through the pipe to clear the remaining clog.
If plunging doesn’t work, try to clear the clog through the sink trap (at the bottom of the U-shaped drain pipe under the sink). Put a bucket under the trap and put on rubber gloves. Using an adjustable pipe wrench, unscrew the plug at the bottom of the trap. Water and gunk will start draining immediately, but that doesn’t mean the clog is cleared. Use a wire coat hanger or something similar to probe the pipe via the trap, and try to pull out any additional material. Then screw the plug back in and turn on hot water. If the clog still isn’t cleared, now it’s time to try to plumber’s snake. Unscrew the plug at the bottom of the trap again and thread the end of the
snake cable into the pipe, toward the wall, as far as it will go. To navigate pipe bends, turn the handle to adjust the cable end. Once the cable is extended as far as it will go, or won’t go in any farther, slowly wind it back out. Clog material that the snake pushed through will likely be tangled up in the wire snarl at the front of the cable. Be sure to clean this off before storing the tool. Now, close up the drain plug, turn on the hot water, and let it run for a couple of minutes to clear out the rest of the clog. If this still doesn’t do the trick, contact a professional plumber. To your good health
by Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Shingles pain lingers after rash is gone Dear Dr. Donohue: Two years ago I had shingles, and I now suffer the aftereffects of it. The sores went away in a month, but the stinging, burning, throbbing pain is still with me. I cannot wear clothing over the affected shoulder. No medicines have eased the pain so far. Is there any help? — M.L. Answer: You now are dealing with postherpetic neuralgia, pain that lingers long after the shingles rash has gone. The virus that causes shingles is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Almost every adult on this continent harbors that virus, now called herpes zoster. It lives on in nerve cells. From time to time, at older ages, it wakens from its hibernation, travels down the nerve to the skin and causes an outbreak of blisters on a red base. The outbreak goes away in
about three weeks. Pain can linger for a long time — months, to years. In traveling down the nerve, the virus damaged it. I can list some of the postherpetic neuralgia medicines. Two are antidepressants — nortriptyline and amitriptyline — given not for depression but for pain relief. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is another antidepressant that can lessen postherpetic pain. Lyrica (pregabalin) is an anti-seizure medicine that’s approved for this problem. Neurontin (gabapentin) is another seizure medicine used for control of the lingering pain of shingles. Capsaicin lotion, cream or gel (Zostrix, Capsin, R-Gel) is applied directly to the involved skin. A higher concentration of capsaicin comes as a patch that’s applied in the doctor’s office, left on for an hour and then removed. Treatment can be repeated in three months. It’s
called Qutenza. Another skin patch is the Lidoderm patch. The latest medicine is Gralise, an extendedrelease form of gabapentin — Neurontin. It requires fewer doses. Dear Dr. Donohue: I get my calcium by drinking milk. I believe natural sources are the best sources of vitamins and minerals. The problem is that whole milk raises my cholesterol. My father died of a heart attack at a young age. Does skim milk have as much calcium as whole milk? -R.T. Answer: Skim milk contains a little more calcium than whole milk. An 8-ounce glass of whole milk has 291 mg of calcium. The same amount of skim milk has 300 mg. (c) 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Whatchamacallits Going fishing? Lose the pole and bait and grab one of these spears! At top (zoomed in bottom, right) is a fishing spear which fisherman would jab into the water, hoping to skewer any prey they could spot. The bottom, (zoomed in bottom, left) is a more specific fishing tool: an eel spear. The goal with this tool was to stab it into the water just beyond the targeted eel, then yank up into the fish’s underside, hoping it would get tangled in the bent-back tines. ~ Check The Original Valley Pennysaver’s Facebook page to see if you can guess each week’s Whatchamacallit! Antiques & Auctions Collecting
by Larry Cox Fenton glass Q: My late mother was fascinated by Fenton glass, and during the last 40 years of her life accumulated more than 90 pieces. Since her death, my sister and I are not certain what to do and need your advice. — Bill, Oklahoma City, OK A: The Fenton Glass Company began as a decorating shop in Martin’s Ferry, Ohio, in 1906, founded by two brothers, Frank and John. Since the decorating business was less than successful, the following year they constructed a glass factory near Williamstown, WV. John left the company and returned to Ohio, where he opened his own firm. In addition to more than 130 patterns of glass, the company produced custard, stretch, chocolate and other types of glass. As you might imagine, some pieces of Fenton can be quite collectible and expensive. Some of the more desirable pieces of Carnival glass, for example, can sell in the thousands of dollars. I recommend you purchase a good reference book to help you determine current values. Although there are dozens available, I especially like “Warman’s Fenton Glass: Identification and
Price Guide” by Mark F. Moran and published by Krause Books. This excellent guide is fully illustrated with more than 1,100 vibrant color photographs, which will make identification of patterns easier. There also is a helpful section that will make it easier to date many of your pieces. Mark is a respected antiques dealer and his guides are among the most accurate and easy to use in the collectors’ marketplace. Q: I began collecting Western paperbacks when I was a teenager more than 50 years ago. I would now like to sell them. Please advise me. — Marsha, Sioux Falls, SD A: I suggest you start by contacting dealers in your area. The Book Shop buys and sells used paperbacks, a good place to begin. Contact is 223 S. Phillips Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57104. Q: I have a postcard with a two-cent stamp. What year was it mailed? — Sue, Albuquerque, NM A: The two-cent postcard stamp was used in 1917 and 1918. After World War I, the rate fell back to a penny in 1919, where it remained until 1958, when it was raised to three cents. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Collecting by Larry Cox Rookwood Pottery Q: My grandmother in Texas collected pottery throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. One of her favorite pieces features the image of an Indian and was made by Rookwood. She had it appraised in 1960 and was told it was painted by Matthew
A. Daly in about 1900. The value at that time was $250. Even though I love the piece, I certainly would sell it if it is valuable. — Susan, West Palm Beach, FL A: According to “Warman’s Rookwood Pottery: Identification and Price Guide” by Denise Rago and Jonathan

Clancy and published by Krause, your vase is currently worth about $10,000 ... not a bad appreciation since 1960. Q: My dad lived in Colorado and was an avid fisherman. Needless to say, he accumulated quite an array of fishing items, including rods, reels, tackle and three older creels. I would like to determine values. Do you have any suggestions? — Lon, Pueblo, CO A: There are several guides that might be helpful. My favorite is “Fishing Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide” by Russell E. Lewis and published by Krause. Copies are available at www.amazon.com.

This reference features current pricing for hundreds of fishing collectibles with more than 2,000 illustrations in full color. Q: My grandmother had a doll that was given to her by an uncle during World War II. Can you tell me its value? — Win, Surprise, AZ A: A free appraisal is generally worth what you pay for it. In other words, if it is important to know the value of an antique of collectible, you can contact dealers in your area for their opinion. A more accurate assessment would be an appraisal by a certified professional, and you should, of course, expect to pay for this service. I suggest you consult the business pages of the phone book and check the listings under “appraisers.” Make certain the appraiser you hire specializes in personal property, not real estate. They are listed together as a rule. You can get either a verbal appraisal, which is less expensive, or a written opinion, which is best for insurance purposes. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Happy y St.. Patty’ss Day • Fun Facts about St. Patrick’s Day • St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The actual color of St. Patrick is blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow. St. Patrick did not actually drive snakes out of Ireland; the snakes represent the pagans that he converted to Christianity. The very first St. Patrick’s Day parade was not in Ireland. It was in Boston in 1737. In Chicago, on St. Patrick’s Day, the rivers are dyed green. Mayor Daley is also of Irish descent. In Seattle, there is a ceremony where a green stripe is painted down the roads. Most Catholics attend mass in the morning and then attend the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Shamrocks are worn on the lapel on this day. In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. Children wear orange,
white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair Many young people dye their hair green for the special day. Many people wear green on this holiday to avoid being pinched. Lucky Charms, a favorite cereal brand among many, young and old, was created in 1963, with its popular mascot, Lucky the Leprechaun. Its jig is a memorable tune for many, including the young at heart: Hearts, Stars, and Horseshoes Clovers and Blue moons Pots of gold and rainbows, And the red balloon That’s the luck of me lucky charms! Their magically delicious! Have a little fun with Lucky the Leprechaun, and help him get home! CLICK HERE for a funfilled game, safe for all ages! Fun Facts about the Irish 34 million Americans have Irish ancestry, according to the 2003 US Census. That’s almost nine times the population of Ireland, which has 4.1 million people. Nine of the people who signed our Declaration Of Independence were of Irish origin, and 19 Presidents of the United States proudly claim Irish heritage — including our first President, George Washington.

Hudson River Tractor Co. celebrates 61 years of service
by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Blue skies and sunshine set the mood for Hudson River Tractor’s annual Open House and Customer Appreciation Day in Fultonville, NY. “This was our 61st annual John Deere Day,” said partner Keith Canary. “The first one was held at the Perth Grange Hall with Phyllis Canary and her mom, Sarah Crannell, preparing and serving refreshments.” Canary says the original John Deere Day took place on a Saturday night at the Broadalbin High School, where large equipment was exhibited in the parking lot and smaller equipment displayed
in the hallways and gym, with dinner served in the cafeteria. Although the event has grown significantly in size — with about 700 people attending this year — Canary says the mission has remained the same over the past 61 years; a big thankyou to the customers and their families with a little marketing thrown in. “It’s something many farm families look forward to from year to year and we are glad it’s a tradition we can keep going.” This year’s Open House included a BBQ pork lunch catered by the Hot Dog Hut in Johnstown, milk

Automotive and Car Care
Maintain current vehicle Buying a new car might sound good in theory, but these days, a new car purchase is out of reach for many Americans, according to a recent CNBC report. With the average cost of a new vehicle higher than ever at $30,500, spending a fraction of that money on making your current vehicle last longer makes good financial sense, says the Car Care Council. “Hanging on to your current vehicle allows you to redirect money you would spend on a new car to pay off credit card debt, college
loans and other bills, beef up savings or even take a road trip vacation,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “By simply budgeting the equivalent of just one new car payment, consumers could cover an entire year’s worth of basic maintenance.” Even if serious engine trouble strikes, keeping your current vehicle is the sensible economic decision. For the cost of an average down payment on a new car or truck, a vehicle can be repowered with a remanufactured/rebuilt engine
and gain years of reliable service without monthly car payments and higher insurance rates. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer
education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.

Automotive and Car Care Potholes pack a powerful punch
Winter is pothole season and this year, they are packing a powerful punch. After hitting a pothole, most drivers wonder, “Is my car OK?” While the tires and wheels can be visually inspected, there could be damage to the steering, suspension and alignment systems that you just can’t see. To help determine if hitting a pothole has damaged your vehicle, watch for the following
warning signs provided by the Car Care Council. • Loss of control, swaying when making routine turns, bottoming out on city streets or bouncing excessively on rough roads. These are indicators that the steering and suspension may have been damaged. The steering and suspension are key safetyrelated systems. Together, they largely

determine your car’s ride and handling. Key components are shocks and/or struts, the steering knuckle, ball joints, the steering rack/box, bearings, seals and hub units and tie rod ends. • Pulling in one direction, instead of maintaining a straight path, and uneven tire wear. These symptoms mean there’s an alignment problem. Proper wheel alignment is important for the lifespan of tires and helps ensure safe handling. • Low tire pressure, bulges or blisters on the sidewalls, or dents in the rim. These problems will be visible and should be checked out as soon as possible as tires are the critical connection between your car and the road in all sorts of driving conditions. As a general rule of thumb, steering and suspension systems should be checked at least once a year and wheels should be aligned at the same interval. Motorists who
live in areas where potholes are common should be prepared to have these systems checked more frequently. Potholes occur during the winter and spring months, when water permeates the pavement — usually through a crack from wear and tear of traffic — and softens the soil beneath it, creating a depression in the surface of the street. Many potholes appear during winter and spring months because of freeze-thaw cycles, which accelerate the process. Potholes can also be prevalent in areas with excessive rainfall and flooding. Useful vegetable gardening terms by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University of Vermont Damping off, dessicate, direct seed. Do you know what these and other terms mean that you may come across in seed catalogs, vegetable gardening books, and online websites? Understanding a few of the main terms will help you to understand plant descriptions and cultural directions. One of the first set of terms, which apply to flowers as well, relate to the plant life cycle. Those that complete their life in one year, from seed to flower to seed (if a sufficient season), then die, are “annuals.” This includes many vegetables, and some herbs such as basil and dill. Some vegetables such as asparagus, and herbs such as thyme and mint, are “perennials.” They come back each year, dying back to the ground in winter. Some herbs are “tender perennials,” such as rosemary or bay, not living over winter in cold climates but surviving where warmer.
Those that take two years for this life cycle are “biennials.” This includes many of the root crops such as turnips and onions and carrots, and crucifers such as cabbage and kale. But don’t get confused, as these are grown for their roots or leaves to harvest the first year, so are treated as annual crops. Parsley is biennial too, so if it overwinters and then dies after flowering the second year, that’s why. Other terms refer to the part we harvest, or family grouping, as above. “Root crops” such as onions are pretty obvious, as are “leafy greens” such as lettuce. “Crucifers” are those in the crucifer or mustard family and include such as cauliflower, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, horseradish, and broccoli. These may be seen too as “cole crops.” “Cucurbits” refer to the family containing squash, melons, pumpkins, and warm season crops. “Umbellifers” are yet another family, those with flat flower clusters such as parsley, dill, and
fennel. Vegetables are often grouped by the general temperature they need to grow best. “Cool season” crops such as carrots and greens are best in spring or fall. “Warm season” crops such as melons, squash, tomatoes, and corn grow best in warm temperatures of summer. Don’t plant the latter too early (many gardeners plant on or after Memorial Day), as planted too early they won’t grow and may get stunted or stressed. They’re sensitive to cold nights, so if you do plant early, keep some frost protection handy such as lightweight frost protection cloths, even old sheets. A couple of climate terms you should know are “frost date” and “hardiness zone.” The frost date is the average expected last frost in your area, which of course may vary yearly. This may be early May in warmer parts of Northern New England, for instance, early June in colder regions. For perennials, you’ll
need to know their hardiness zones, and yours. Each zone refers to the average, annual minimum winter temperature, and can be found from the USDA hardiness zone m a p (www.usna.usda.gov/Har dzone/ushzmap.html). When choosing vegetables, for those that get serious diseases, look for ones that are “disease resistant.” These are ones that have had resistance bred into them for a particular disease, so they tend not to be infected. Often you’ll see letters denoting such resistance in the plant descriptions, with symbol key in the catalog, such as F for fusarium wilt, LB for late blight, V for verticillium wilt, or TMV for tobacco mosaic virus. If a plant is a “hybrid,” it is a cross between at least two other plants. This means that in order to get the same plant, you’ll need these other plants. Sowing seeds of the hybrid usually will not give you the same plants. F1 and F2 refer to the generations of crosses
to make the hybrid. “Open pollinated” are plants whose seeds come about from plants crossing on their own, so often yield similar plants when their seeds are sown. If you start your own seeds indoors, often you transplant into larger pots when the plant has at least two “true leaves”, compared to the first couple of “seed leaves” (“cotyledons”) which often look quite different, usually being rounded. But, if you sow seeds directly into the garden, this is “direct seeding.” Usually, when direct seeding, you sow “thicker” or more seeds than needed in case some don’t germinate. If so, you’ll need to “thin” or remove weaker plants to allow proper spacing. When deciding where to plant, practice “crop rotation.” There are several variations on this, but basically it means not planting the same crop in the same place for at least a couple years, three is better. By rotating different crops in the same space over the
years, you’ll help both soil quality and to prevent diseases. If you start seedlings indoors, you’ll want to gradually acclimate them to outdoor temperatures and light-- “hardening off.” If you keep seedlings too wet, they may get a disease which makes them topple at the soil line, termed “damping off.” On the other hand, too dry and they’ll dry out or “dessicate”, which may be permanent. When fertilizing plants in the garden, sprinkling fertilizer uniformly over a whole bed is “broadcasting,”, while “banding” or “sidedressing” is applying fertilizer or compost along a row of plants-- the latter being on the surface, the former slightly below soil level. These are only a few of the more basic terms to get you started. More, and full details on crop culture, can be found in references such as Vegetable Gardening for Dummies, by Vermont author Charlie Nardozzi.
Safe ways to generate power during an outage (NAPSA) — Portable generators can be a powerful tool during a natural disaster or emergency. However, they can also be dangerous-even deadly — if not installed and operated safely. That’s the word from experts who say safety hazards include carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, electric shock or electrocution, and fires. There were 542 generator-related CO deaths between 1999 and 2009, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Eighty-five percent of these deaths occurred in and around the home. To help keep you and your family safe from generator-related hazards, here are some tips from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI): • ESFI recommends that generators be installed by qualified, licensed electricians. • Do not connect a generator directly to household wiring without the use of a transfer switch that keeps power from back-feeding into the power lines. • Make sure your home has either a battery-operated or battery backup CO alarm. Test the batteries monthly. • Never operate a generator inside your home or in any other even-partially enclosed space. Opening doors and windows or using fans for ventilation will not prevent CO from building up. • Locate the generator as far from the house as possible, away from doors, windows and vents. Keep the generator a safe distance from your neighbors’ homes as well. • Do not operate the generator in wet conditions or where there is standing water. Use the generator on a dry surface under an open, canopy-like structure. • Make sure not to overload the generator. Keep the electrical load to no more than the generator’s recommended wattage. • Plug appliances directly into the generator or use a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cord. • Turn off all appliances powered by the generator before shutting it down. • Always turn the generator off and let it cool down before adding more fuel. • Keep children away from generators at all times. • Remember that a generator is a temporary power source. Use it only when necessary to power essential equipment or appliances. Understanding the dangers associated with portable generators and practicing good safety habits could save your life. For more information about electrical safety during storms and natural disasters, visit www.electrical-safety.org.

History of Maple Syrup Production Who would think of sticking something in a maple tree and boiling the sap to make syrup? The Iroquois have an answer in this old legend. The story begins on a day in early March. Chief Woksis had thrown his tomahawk into a nearby maple tree. The next day, he needed the weapon for hunting and yanked it from the tree. The weather turned warm and the gash in the maple tree dripped sap into a container that was near the trunk. That evening, the chief's wife was heading to the stream for water and found the container with sap and thought it was just like water. She tasted the liquid, found it to be sweet, and used it for cooking water. When Woksis came home from hunting, he smelled a wonderful scent - a maple aroma. The water had boiled down to syrup and had sweetened their meal with maple. So, the legend says, the happy practice of maple syrup production began! Sap is produced in Spring - it flows from the roots to the branches of the tree. But early on in maple syrup production, getting to the sap was not easy. Recorded accounts indicate an ax or some other sharp object was used to chop a groove into a tree to release sap. But producers found the "ax method" damaged trees and contaminated the sap in future years. So, they began to drill holes into the trees a few days before the sap was expected to start running. Producers then collected the sap in buckets hung from wooden spouts called spiles. Originally, spiles were made from hollowed out sumac branches, but later were fashioned out of metal. Spiles were removed after the sap stopped flowing to allow the tree to heal. While the sap flowed, buckets were checked daily to make sure there was no overflow. Full buckets were emptied into barrels and hauled through the woods (also called the sugar bush) by horse drawn wagons. Not much has changed over the years - some large scale maple producers continue to collect sap in buckets - a time consuming and hard job. But by using buckets, maples producers can easily recognize good sap-producing trees. And today, the equipment is of much higher quality. Turning sap into syrup involves evaporation - water must be removed to produce a more concentrated sugar solution. Early methods included using hot rocks in hollowed out logs to speed evaporation. Later, metal containers were used over open fires. But producers discovered that boiling sap in a single kettle often resulted in a darker, lower quality syrup. Using a series of kettles pro-
duced a higher grade of syrup. Modern evaporators evolved from that open kettle system. It still takes approximately 43 gallons of sap to make just one gallon of maple syrup. Sap becomes syrup when the sugar concentration reaches about 67%.

The event is in its 18th year, and takes place on March 16-17 and March 23-24, 2013 from 10am - 4pm each day. Maple Weekend is presented by the New York State Maple Producers Association. More than 110 maple producers across New York State will host open houses where the public can see how maple syrup and other related products are made. This family-oriented event is sure to delight visitors of all ages. Participating producers will boil sap into maple syrup and many will demonstrate how to make other maple products. Visitors can sample and purchase maple products as well. Some sugarhouses will provide a variety of other activities to make your visit even more memorable.
