March 30, 2013 Hello Again, Have you seen your first robin of the season? Who needs a calendar to know when springtime weather is just around the corner? We country folks have our own way of knowing. For example, the Parkside Restaurant in St. Johnsville is already open. As you know, Parkside is one of the favorite watering holes and they are open seven days each week. This year, they are offering some new specials. Grandma, along with Gramps, is still digging Granny’s roadside eatery out from under the winter snow. They may be open before you read this. If you can’t wait, bring a snow shovel and a strong back. If they are not open, I will buy you all the soft ice cream you can eat and none after they open. Maybe I should explain why I will not buy you soft ice cream at Granny’s. This Hello Again column is now read in over 20,000 homes with an average of over 3.5 residents in each home. That’s well over 70,000 ice cream eaters. I may be slow but am neither rich or Santa — as you know he drives a big red cattle truck during the warm weather season. We have not poked fun at the clergy or church-goers in several months, so it must be their turn. I believe even the good Lord enjoys a harmless joke once in a while. This little bit of chatter was told to me as true. The former owner of the Daniel Green Slipper Company in Dolgeville enjoyed his summers at his camp near Otsego Lake, played golf at the Ryerson-Otsego golf course, and attended church in Cooperstown. A fellow golfer — known to all as Coach — also played golf and ushered at the same church. So that you will better understand this chatter, while Coach was a good golfer and a grand guy, he was also quite deaf. One Sunday while ushering and passing the collection basket, he handed the basket to our Dolgeville friend. Due to his deafness — he did not realize how loud his voice was and with the church in near silence — he said in a loud voice, “You can do better than that.” You can take bets that everyone present knew they both were in church that day. It may be the best homily ever remembered. In keeping with our church collection basket chatter, it was told that a little tot along with his Dad watched while the ushers were passing the collection plates. When the usher stopped at the little fellow’s pew, in a rather loud voice said, “Don’t pay for me Daddy. I’m under five.”

So we think we are a better educated, more advanced society with more and better benefits than those of yester years? I have a photocopy of an envelope mailed by the war department to Charles Walter Vosburgh of Palatine Bridge, NY dated April 18, 1919. The paid postage was one cent. Citizens could mail a 1st class letter for one penny and now we have to pay nearly a half buck. Are we advancing backwards? In the issue of February 16, 2013 we published a list of the men and women from this area who served our country in the so-called war to end all wars: the World War. Charles R. Vosburgh of Palatine Bridge graciously allowed us to copy the honorable discharge papers of his grandfather, a World War I veteran. I believe his father was the Montgomery County sheriff. One good deed deserves another. If you are in the market to buy hay or straw, give Mr. Vosburgh a call: 518-993-3749. I’m sure he will be able to help. I found it very interesting to learn that the Vosburgh family name and the Nellis family branched from a common tree, or at least had common ancestors. It would be an interesting study to learn of the connections of the families living in the Mohawk Valley. For example, who was related to whom? In my case, our family history in America is basically only four generations old. We love America but we are as Irish as Paddy’s pig. Wouldn’t it be interesting to learn the family names now living in our valley? Whose family name was part of our list of those who served in the first World War, second World War, and even the Civil War? This yarn is proof that it’s tough to beat apple pie. It seems that a Sunday School teacher was teaching her young class about heaven and hell. She said, “All of you students who want to go to Heaven say ‘I’.” Little Johnny Alone was mute. When his teacher asked, “Johnny, don’t you want to go to Heaven?” he said, “When Grandpa drove me to Sunday School this morning, Mom was baking a couple of apple pies.” This afternoon while writing Hello Again, I had an interesting visit with a lady who says she has used her body as a human guinea pig/laboratory to study the affects of food as it pertains to her own health. She said she is 72 but in my opinion she talks, thinks, walks as a 30 year old. I should have asked her — “If some food does not seem to agree with you — is your body trying to warn you? Could it be causing more damage than you ever imagined? For example, one of my favorite dressings for a meat sandwich is mayo. My stomach has a continuing argument with mayo. Is it possible that it is causing some serious problem unknown to me?” Sunday to Christians will be the most important day of the year. The Bible teachers and I believe the day we call Easter, Jesus willingly obeyed God the Father, allowed his earthly human body to surrender to death on the cross so that we who believe will be forgiven of our sins, and will enjoy eternal life with him. Naturally this is a personal decision one must make — to believe in Christ or not. I do not suggest you have to — I just wish you would. Watch for the little red bike — when the robins come back, so will the bike — wave hello and may God bless you, your family, and friends.

Fort Plain True Value and Just Ask Rental. 12 Willett St, Fort Plain. (518)993-3834. Green Thumb 2 cu ft Garden Soil is just $2.99 a bag!

Whatchamacallits This weight tips the scale at 17.40 pounds. That’s much too light to bench press with but far too heavy to be a paperweight! It’s purpose? It’s a horse tie. The flat bottom of the weight keeps it from rolling around a buggy floor, instead resting easy as one drives. If there is no place to tie up the horse once reaching your destination, the horse tie comes to the rescue. 17 pounds may not seem like enough weight to keep a grown horse from moving, but the weight was carefully measured when forged. Too heavy and the added weight in the buggy would over-burden the horse. Too light and the horse wouldn’t know it was tied. At 17 pounds, the horse feels enough of a tug to be fooled into believing it is permanent-

ly tied. People not wanting to bother with such a weight may train their horse to be ground-tied, where the site of its reigns

dangling to the ground fools a horse into thinking it is permanently tied. This weight could be a useful tool in ground-tied training, as well.

Automotive and Car Care

What is the best strategy for financing a new car? To compare vehicle loans, make a chart with the following six columns: names and phone numbers of lenders, annual percentage rates for three-year term, four-year term, five-year term, and total interest charges for each loan. Call or check Web sites for at least three lenders such as a credit union, bank, and savings and loan association to fill in your columns. Use this calculator from FINRA or do the math to total the cost of each loan: h t t p : //apps.finra.org/ Calcs/1/Loan For example, assuming an interest rate of 6 percent for all three time periods and a $15,000 car loan, the monthly payment on a 3-year loan would be $456.33 ($16,428 total: $456.33 x 36 months). A 4-year loan would cost $352.28 per m o n t h a n d $16,909.44 total ($352.28 x 48 months) and a 5year loan would cost $290 per month and $17,400 total (290 x 60 months).

Home equity loans may be a good way to finance your purchase. The primary advantage of using a home equity loan is that you will be able to deduct the interest charges on your tax return (if you itemize deductions). The major disadvantages are that you are putting your home in jeopardy if you can’t make your car payments, and you will be charged extra expenses such as a home appraisal, title insurance, filing fees, and an origination fee to establish a home equity loan. Dealerships may have special financing packages. Don’t hesitate to use this source of funding, but you want to be prepared and do your homework before you sign the paperwork on your new vehicle. The best financial choice is the shortest loan with the lowest interest rate and lowest extra finance charges. In the above example, you could save $972 from a three-year loan compared to a five-year loan. Source: www. extension.org

Senior citizens: when to stop driving Sometimes, it’s best to stop driving altogether. How do you know when it’s time to give up the keys? It may be obvious, like when someone has a serious disease with symptoms that make driving unsafe. In other cases, it is not clear, as with a person with very mild dementia whose driving skills decline very slowly. Whatever the reason, it’s time to stop when your driving endangers you or other people on the road. Talk to your family members, friends, or doctor to see if they have concerns about your driving. A driver rehabilitation specialist can also recommend whether or not you should stop driving after evaluating your health and abilities.

by Gail Lapierre, Vermont AgrAbility Project Outreach Specialist, University of Vermont Extension Did you know that having a working smoke alarm reduces a person’s chance of dying in a fire by half? For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, outside every sleeping area and in every bedroom. Smoke alarms should be mounted on

ceilings or high on walls, about four to 12 inches from the ceiling, and tested monthly by pushing the test button. It’s also important to replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year unless they are 10-year lithium batteries. If your smoke alarms are hardwired, they still have batteries in case of a power outage. Be sure to replace these batteries, too. One good way to remember to change the

batteries in all your smoke alarms is to do it when you set your clocks back in fall or ahead in spring. You also need to replace the battery if you test the unit and don’t hear the alarm or anytime you hear a “chirp,” which indicates low battery power. Smoke alarms sensors do not last forever. The maximum life span is eight to 10 years. After that time, the entire unit should be replaced.

Check the manufacture date on the back of the unit. If there is none, definitely replace the entire unit now. Or if the unit does not respond properly when tested, replace it immediately. Most hardware stores carry both battery-operated ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms for about $10 to $25 apiece. Ionization alarms are triggered by smoke and respond quickly to heat and flames. Photo-

electric alarms detect smoke from a smoldering fire before it spreads rapidly. It’s recommended that you have both types in your home. Smoke alarms containing these two types of sensors in the same unit also are available at many outlets. Or consider replacing your alarms with the newer combination smoke and carbon monoxide type units. Regardless of what you choose, always look for

the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or other recognized testing laboratory label. And remember to write the date of installation inside the alarm’s cover as a reminder of when you will need to replace the unit. Don’t take chances. The cost of a new battery or new smoke alarm — and a few minutes of your time a month to test the alarm — is a small price to pay for your family’s safety.

To your good health by Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Differences between hepatitis B and C Dear Dr. Donohue: My husband and I are in our 50s. Both of us had an exam this year from different doctors. Blood tests showed that we both have hepatitis C. Neither of us feels sick, and neither of us ever remembers acquiring this infection. Our doctors say we don’t need any treatment. What is the treatment if we ever do? Are we infectious to others? — K.K. Answer: In North America, hepatitis B and C are the two most common kinds of viral hepatitis. In the United States, about 1.25 million are infected with hepatitis B virus. Five percent of infected people go on to develop a chronic infection, one in which the virus remains in the liver, and these people face the pos-

sibility of coming down with liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. A vaccine for the prevention of hepatitis B is available. Hepatitis C infects around 3 million Americans. In contrast with hepatitis B, around 70 percent to 80 percent will have a chronic infection. A sizable number will come down with liver cirrhosis or cancer, but that doesn’t happen right away. It takes 20 or more years before those complications arise. When treatment of hepatitis C is advised, two medicines have been given simultaneously for many years. Those drugs are peginterferon and ribavirin. About 50 percent of chronic hepatitis C patients respond well to this regimen. However, blacks have a poorer response, with only 25 percent achieving viral suppression. A true breakthrough has arrived in the treat-

ment of hepatitis C. Two new drugs, telaprevir (Incivek) and boceprevir (Victrelis) have had a huge impact in improving treatment success. Either of these drugs, given in conjunction with the standard treatment of ribavirin and peginterferon, greatly increases the cure rates for blacks and whites. An initial sickness after acquiring hepatitis C virus is rare, and, that’s why you and your husband didn’t realize you were infected. The virus can be transmitted through blood transfusions (no longer a threat), sharing needles for drug injections, rarely through sexual relations and household contact, but more possibly through promiscuous sex and in ways yet to be determined. You’re not a threat to others. The booklet on hepatitis describes these infections and their treatment,

not including the latest treatments. Dear Dr. Donohue: My brother cracks his knuckles. It gives me the shivers, and I know he does it to annoy me. Can you give me any information that will scare him, like coming down with arthritis? — L.C. Answer: I’d love to give you some information that would stop your brother from cracking his knuckles. It bothers me, too. I can’t come up with any. It doesn’t cause arthritis. To produce the cracking sound, a person pulls his finger in such a way that it creates a bubble in the joint fluid. Then the bubble bursts and makes a cracking noise when it does. I can’t understand why people do this. (c) 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Start planning now for spring’s home makeover (BPT) — If April showers bring May flowers, what do winter’s snowflakes bring? Perhaps it’s an excuse to curl up with your favorite magazines and imagine the kitchen makeover of your dreams. When the cold winter months keep you indoors, use the time to take care of things that will make your remodeling plans much easier to tackle in the spring. Determine the scope of your project: Do you need just a few coats of paint or a whole new kitchen? Take this

time to evaluate what you want to accomplish. If you need to work with a designer or contractor, now is the time to do your research and engage professional help to plan. Look to online resources like the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and Houzz or ask friends and family for recommendations. Meet with a few prospects and see whose work and costs fit your needs. You should also determine your budget and use that to guide the rest of your planning decisions.

Look for trends that last: Once you have a good sense for what your project will involve, have fun dreaming up all the details. Are you looking to make a bold statement or create a timeless look? No matter how large or small your project, there are many current trends that can make a big impact in your home, yet will stand the test of time. In the kitchen, white cabinetry has had a resurgence of popularity and can create a classic look or serve as the perfect complement to colorful statement

pieces that can be easily swapped out as trends change. Throughout the home, universal design is also becoming an increasingly important trend to consider. Planning your remodel so the space is comfortable to use for all ages and abilities will not only ensure your longterm enjoyment of the space, but can also help with resale value down the road. “As more and more homeowners are looking to age in place, they’re demanding designs that accommodate their changing needs

without compromising on style,” says Sarah Reep, Merillat Cabinetry’s design lead. Clean house: When you’re ready to get started on your remodel, you won’t want to worry about cleaning. Take time now to look at everything stored in your kitchen and pantry and determine what stays and what can go. It’ll make prepping for renovation projects that much easier. How old are those spices? What about that stack of lids with no container to match? Have

lots of totes and bags hanging around? Donate the ones you don’t use and organize the rest. If you have kitchen items you can’t part with but you rarely use, pack them up now and store them until the remodel is complete. You’ll want as much free space to keep things out of the way during your remodel as possible. If you take time now to get prepared for your kitchen remodel, you’ll thank yourself in a few months when the kitchen of your dreams is coming to life.

The most common mistakes homeowners make when choosing a home improvement contractor and how to avoid them (BPT) — Consumer complaints and lawsuits regarding home improvements are on the rise according to Ripoff Reports; a homeowner that does not do their homework before embarking on a project could find themselves with poor workmanship, inferior products, health and safety issues or even legal problems. So what’s a homeowner in need of a fix up to do? “Start by reviewing the three most common mistakes people make when embarking on a home improvement project,” says Dave Harrison, chief marketing officer of Champion Windows, Sunrooms, Roofing and Home Exterio r s (www.GetChampion.com) . Mistake number one: Buying Only on Price Your home is probably one of the most expensive items you own, so mak-

ing improvements is not the place to budget shop. “Make sure you are getting quality products professionally installed. A properly done home improvement should only have to be done once,” added Harrison, “and remember the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’.” Mistake number two: Not looking at the Long Term Investment Benefits When your home improvement project is finally over, you should be getting more than an upgrade to your home; you should also see an increase in your home’s value. When you do it right you can reduce energy and maintenance costs and increase comfort and pride in your home, and never have to worry about it again for as long as you own your home.

On the flip side a poorly executed project can lower the value of your home, have to be re-done in several years and even put your family’s health at risk. For example, water damage from faulty windows could cause mold. Mistake number three: Not Knowing How to Screen a Contractor “I’ve seen many independently owned contractors close their businesses after a short year or two,” said Harrison. “When selecting a contractor to work with it is important to get a sense of who they are, what products they use and how long they have been in business.” According to Harrison there are four essential questions to ask during this screening process: • Who designs it? • Who builds it? • Who installs it?

• Who guarantees it? “When you don’t get the correct answers to these four questions you may end up with an inferior investment, expensive surprises, property damage or even lawsuits and liabilities,” says Harrison. “Ultimately, the answer you want is that there is a single source of accountability for your project. Having one company design, build, install and guarantee the product and work, as Champion does, can save you time, money and hassles in the long run.” Make sure you have a contractor relationship you can trust for the long-term. This long-term relationship starts with a quality product and professional installation and includes a lifetime warranty from a company that has longevity and provides you with a sense that they will still be in

business five or ten years down the road. You should also ensure that your warranty is transferable, applies to all systems, applications and materials, and is non-prorated. A non-pro-

rated warranty is considered to be the most valuable as it means that the manufacturer or seller will replace or repair the item at no cost to the buyer if there is a problem with a product.

NHTSA unveils ‘SaferCar’ app for iPhones Free mobile app provides real-time info to help consumers “Buy Safe, Drive Safe, and Stay Safe” WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a new iOS app for iPhones and iPod Touches that will provide real-time vehicle safety information to consumers from NHTSA’s SaferCar.gov site. NHTSA’s SaferCar app allows users to search its 5-Star Safety Ratings for vehicles by make and model, locate car seat installation help, file a vehicle safety complaint, find recall information and subscribe to automatic notices about vehicle recalls. NHTSA will also give developers real-time access to the data that powers this app through an Application Programming Interface (API), enabling them to integrate these data into new and existing apps and empowering consumers with important safety information. Millions of consumers already rely on these data to inform their purchasing decisions on popular automobile review sites; now they’ll be able to access these data in real-time.

“Safety is our highest priority, and we’re always working to find new and better ways for people to access SaferCar, one of the most popular programs on our website,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “This app takes advantage of the latest technology to ensure that consumers have the realtime information they need to buy safe, drive safe and stay safe.” The new SaferCar app gives consumers immediate access to key safety information to help them make informed decisions, with features including: • 5-Star Safety Ratings: Consumers considering vehicle purchases can look up crash test ratings and compare them across different makes and models. • Recalls and Complaints: App users can stay on top of safety issues for vehicles they already own. Consumers can register their vehicles to be notified by NHTSA if a safety issue is discovered. The app also makes it simple to submit complaints to NHTSA regarding possible safety prob-

lems with a particular vehicle. • Help Installing Child Seats: The app helps consumers ensure their most precious passengers ride safe. Users can quickly get driving directions to the nearest child seat inspection station and get assistance to properly install their car seats and boosters. •Safety Headlines and Alerts: App users can receive important news and information from NHTSA, as well as recall notices and push notices on their recorded vehicles. The announcement is just the first phase for the SaferCar app for iPhone and iPod Touch devices, which can be downloaded from Apple’s iTunes Store. Development is also underway for a version compatible with Android devices. The launch of the NHTSA app is part of ongoing efforts by the nation’s chief automotive safety agency to make it easier for consumers to access and submit information about important vehicle safety concerns. Earlier this year, the agency also updated re-

sources on its www.SaferCar.gov website to enable consumers to quickly locate information on specific safety defect investigations, complaints and vehicle recalls. The app launch coincides with the release of the NHTSA Application Programming Interface (API) — a new way to pro-

ly protecting privacy — has been a priority for the Obama Administration. The release of NHTSA data as an API is a continuation of that commitment. NHTSA intends to release an online course to teach developers how to use the new APIs. S o u r c e : www.nhtsa.gov

Put your tax refund to work; invest in your vehicle How will you spend your tax refund? Another flat-screen TV? An iPad? Clothes? The Car Care Council has a better idea for your money: spend it on your second biggest investment, your car. “Whether it’s an oil change, replacing brakes or new belts and hoses, that periodic repair bill is a drop in the bucket compared to monthly payments on a new car,” said Rich White, executive director Car Care Council. “The bottom line is that a properly maintained vehicle is safer, more dependable, more fuel efficient, less polluting and more valuable. The smartest way to get a solid return on investment is to keep your car through what we call the ‘Cinderella Era.’ It’s that period of time after the payoff when your car is still in great shape and needs only modest repairs.” With proper care, the typical vehicle should deliver at least 200,000 miles of safe, dependable performance. The most common maintenance procedures and repairs to keep your car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term value involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires and air conditioning. The council also recommends an annual tune-up and wheel alignment. “Last year, the average tax refund was nearly $3,000. By simply allocating a portion, or the equivalent of just one new car payment, consumers could cover an entire year’s worth of basic maintenance and live happily ever after with their current vehicle,” said White. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.
