April 6, 2013 Hello Again, The Bible says a man cannot be a prophet in his own land. I absolutely do not believe I am a prophet. What I am is a senior citizen in a land that once was the dreamland for the entire world. A nation where a poor, hard-working immigrant family could find employment, own a home and even own their own business and who knows? Maybe someday it might become General Electric, Carnegie Steel, or even Walmart. The dream was real and it happened over and over again and still does. A land that offered personal freedom, religious freedom, free education for 12–13 years. Reduced cost for higher education. Excellent medical care. T.V. programs mother’s could allow their children to watch. Sunday held as God’s day. I continue as a senior American citizen who is watching the decay of this most wonderful country. Our economic way of life is being destroyed. We are holding hands and financially supporting the largest communist nation on earth. A nation where Christians cannot let it be known publically they believe in the teachings of God’s holy word, the Bible. A nation that during the Korean War supported our enemy, the North Koreans. It has been said, our country buys more manufactured goods from China than any other and at the same time borrowing money from the Chinese government to buy from Chinese manufacturers. Does it create a tingle all over your body with excitement to know that we are closing our U.S. factories, putting U.S. citizens out of work so we can feed millions upon millions of dollars every day into the communist country of China? In the 1920s, we passed anti-trust laws in this country to protect U.S. customers and businesses from unfair trade practices. Wouldn’t it be interesting to know how many American dollars are spent in China and how much China purchases from the U.S.? Talk about unfair trade practices. I guess we are not supposed to talk or think that way. Just buy ourselves down the drain, shrug our shoulders and wonder how it happened. Should our prayer not only be “God bless America,” but “God protect us from those in Washington D.C. who could reverse this slaughter but just ignore it.”? I believe Nikita Khrushchev said, “Communism – socialism – would take over the United States without ever firing a shot.” I will repeat what I penned a few months ago. The dictionary definition of capitalism (the American system) and socialism (the Russian, Chinese, and Cuban systems). Capitalism: The economic system in which production and distribution are privately owned and operated for profit. Socialism: A theory of the ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution by society, with all members sharing in the work and products – or a political movement for establishment of such a system. We are a capitalist nation not a socialist nation. Russia, China and Cuba are socialist. We are the owners of our homes, villages and businesses.

Page 7

In the November 17, 2012 Hello Again, I penned, “When a socialist says he became rich through hard work, ask him whose hard work and write a book of fiction about it.” In the good old days, we read about the “Cowboys and Indians.” In the 30’s and 40’s, “Cops and Robbers,” and now we read about “the Democrats and the Republicans.” At one time, you knew the good guys from the bad guys. Now you can’t tell them apart. In fact, it is even more confusing. Now days our representatives in Albany and Washington no longer vote their convictions but their party line. So if their party is rotten, their vote will be rotten too. It’s more than obvious our Senators and House members are accustomed to the stink of a rotten barrel. Who knows if they vote for something they could not possibly read or understand, they can put on their Lone Ranger mask and hope none of the people back home will see or know. I wonder if Mr. Obama said, “Skunk cabbage should be the national food,” if even one Democrat would vote no or even ask, “What is skunk cabbage?” I realize that Mr. Obama is a powerful speaker and vote getter, but do you think that nearly every member of his political party should vote in the same way? No one, not one has a different political opinion? Or do you believe it is morally O.K. to vote against your convictions? That or this is the way that countries all over the world operated. They were known as kingships and/or dictatorships. Is that what we want? I admit I was thinking about our new national health program when I heard this, “If the Lord’s Ten Commandments had been written up as a federal regulations and issued on stone, Moses would not have come down from Mount Sinai with two stone tablets. He would have come down with a double hernia.” A retired business man said to his wife, “When the time comes, I want a Senator, a member of the House, along with agents from American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa, and the local bank as well as the governor to be my pallbearers. They have been driving me to my death. The least they can do is finish the job.” Sometimes I wonder which of the three parties our national and state representatives belong to; the Republican, Democratic, or cocktail. I quote John Ruskin, “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces up, snow is exhilarating. There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good.” This morning I had reason to doubt or at least to be extra careful when I put on a stout leather belt and suspenders – both. Just in case I miss your neighbor, say hello for the both of us. Remember a stranger is merely a friend you have not met yet. The real message of Easter is the one to live by. Hope we will meet in church. Invite a neighbor to attend church with you. It could be the greatest first step in friendship you will ever take. Fred Lee and Family

Tidbits & Tidings from the Fort Plain Library by Sally-Jean Taylor Of Spring and Tea and Balm for Thee I was looking out the kitchen window today, thinking about the library’s upcoming Tea Party and thinking back to a time when I would arrive home from school in time to sit and have a cup of tea with my British Nana. Many of my youthful dramas were soothed over a cup of tea with her. I recall our times together every time I open the large, round Tetley Tea can that still holds the attachments to her Singer sewing machine, now serving its fifth generation. And speaking of

tea… The Fort Plain Library will hold its first annual Victorian Tea Party on April 27. Phil and Tony Hubbard have generously offered to host this event in their lovely Victorian home. Those attending will enjoy a Traditional English Afternoon Tea complete with a wonderful assortment of delicacies created by Aaron Katovich of The Table. Information is available at the library. In preparation for the library’s Victorian Tea Party, the library will be showing a video on the

Charleston Tea Plantation on Tuesday evening, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. The Charleston Tea Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina, is the only tea plantation in the United States. The video gives the viewer a tour of the plantation and shows how tea is processed from the plant to the final product that many of us enjoy. Other news includes… Story Hour with Joanne Resch will be returning to our library on Tuesday, April 9. There will be one more session of the ‘Altered Book

Workshop’ taught by Julie Takacs. The last class will be held on Wednesday, April 10, at 6 p.m. In celebration of national poetry month, the library will be hosting a reading of poetry from the Mohawk Valley read by local community members. This will be held on Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. While there are several upcoming programs (Penny rugs, beaded ornaments, etc.) in the making, we invite you to suggest topics we might pursue. For more information contact the Fort Plain Library at 518993-4646.

Whatchamacallits This horse picket pin was used by the United States Cavalry and represents an era of warfare much different than our modern realities. Though horses are no longer an efficient means of battle, their history is often celebrated in reenactments, museums and monuments nation-wide. The cavalry was replaced by tank warfare, but that shift was at a gradual pace. Horse warfare was common during World War I and after that began to phase out. A few horse cavalry units remained into World War II, especially as scouts. After World War II, horses were used primarily for the transport of troops and supplies and were no longer part of battle. Picket pins like these secured the horses when resting. They were very efficient — two of these pins, if secure enough,

could hold an entire line of horses, depending on the size of the ring at top. Picket rope was often used in the securing. The rope had a snap hook on each end. One end of the rope was clasped on the horse’s bridle, the other around the ring of the picket

pin. Of course, a fence or tree would also secure a horse, so pins were not often used. Today it is a collector’s item, but not so long ago this simple piece of iron was a war technology that remained unchanged, spanning both centuries and continents.

TAXPAYERS of the TOWN OF PALATINE The past few months I have been informing you as to how Highway Departments in various townships in Montgomery County handle the plowing of their roads in comparison to the Town of Palatine. The remaining two townships are: St. Johnsville - 2 Trucks - 28 miles of road Root - 4 Trucks - 82 miles of road At a recent Town of Palatine Board meeting, the reason given for the need of 6 trucks to plow 67 miles of road was in case of a breakdown. If you recall, 25 years ago the Town of St. Johnsville lost all of their plow trucks when a fire destroyed the town barn and 6 years ago, the Town of Root lost their entire fleet, also because of fire. THEIR ROADS STILL GOT PLOWED. Also, the Town of St. Johnsville recently did a complete overhaul on both of their 25 year old trucks. My point being, there are solutions to situations that may arise other than buying new and these solutions should be considered before approving new purchases. If the highway superintendents of the townships in Montgomery County followed Palatine Highway Superintendent Logan’s approach of needing one truck per 11 miles to plow snow, you would need a total of 63 trucks to take care of the roads in Montgomery County. That means an additional 21 trucks would be needed. If those 21 trucks were all purchased at a cost of $215,000.00 each, (the cost of Palatine’s recent purchase) the taxpayers of Montgomery County would be looking at a total cost of $4.515 million. I realize there are expenses within the town budget that the board cannot control, which is all the more reason for them to make fiscally responsible decisions on issues that are within their control. A good start would be with the highway department. As taxpayers, you have control and that control is:

Free tax return preparation The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. VITA The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $51,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. TCE The TCE Program offers free tax help for all with priority assistance to people who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement issues unique to seniors. IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS. Self-Help Tax Preparation In addition to traditional face-to-face tax preparation, the IRS is offering a self-assistance service at many VITA and TCE locations. If individuals have a simple tax return and need a little help or do not have access to a computer, they can visit one of the participating tax preparation sites and an IRS-certified volunteer will guide them through the process. Find a VITA Site Near You There are thousands of VITA sites located across the country. You may find a site near you between January and April using the VITA Locator Tool or call 1-800-906-9887.

Find a TCE or AARP Tax-Aide Site Near You A majority of the TCE sites are operated by the AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide Program. To locate the nearest TCE site or AARP Tax-Aide site between January and April use the AARP Site Locator Tool or call 888-227-7669. Note: Majority of the VITA and TCE sites are open annually from late January/ early February to April 15. During this time, you can locate a site near you using the above locator tools. Safety tips: Winter fires More fires occur during the winter months than at any other time. Fortunately, taking simple precautions can prevent most fires. Follow the safety tips below to help ensure your safety: Portable Heaters • Put at least three feet of empty space between the heater and everything else. • Vacuum and clean the dust and lint from all heaters. • If the cord gets hot, frayed or cracked, have the heater serviced. • Never use extension cords with portable electric heaters. • Turn off portable heaters when leaving or sleeping. • An adult should always be present when anyone is using a space heater around children. • Make sure your portable electric heater is UL approved and has a tip-over shut off function. Woodstove and Fireplace Safety • Have a certified

chimney sweep clean and inspect your fireplace. • Place ashes outdoors in a covered metal container at least three feet away from anything that burns. • To prevent flue fires, burn dry, wellseasoned wood. • Always use a fireplace screen made of sturdy metal or heattempered glass. If children are present, use a special childguard screen. Generators Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible killer. You cannot see or smell it. A generator's exhaust contains poisonous CO, which can kill you in a matter of minutes. Follow these important generator safety tips: • Never use a portable generator inside a home, garage, shed or other partially enclosed space, even if doors and windows are open. • Place portable generators outside only, far away from the home. Keep the

generator away from openings to the home, including doors, windows, and vents. • Read the label on the generator and the owner's manual, and follow the instructions. • Install CO alarms with battery backup in the home outside each sleeping area. • Get to fresh air immediately if you start to feel sick, weak or dizzy. CO poisoning from exposure to generator exhaust can quickly lead to incapacitation and death. • Be sure generator fuel is properly and safely stored. • Always refuel the generator outdoors and away from any ignition sources. • If you choose to have a generator permanently connected to your home's electrical system, make sure a licensed electrician installs it and be sure to notify your electric company. Candles • Place candles in sturdy, fireproof candleholders where

they cannot be knocked over. • Make sure all candles are out before going to bed or leaving the house. • Keep candles, matches, and lighters out of children's reach. • Keep candles away from Christmas trees, evergreen clippings, decorations, presents, and wrapping paper. Smoke Alarms and Home Escape Plans • Install smoke alarms outside each sleeping area and in each bedroom. • Test and vacuum your smoke alarms each month to make sure they are working. • Smoke alarms 10 years old or older need to be replaced with new units. • Know two ways out of every room. • Practice your escape plan with your whole family at least twice a year. • Do not attempt to go back into a burning home. STONE STONE VENEER

This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Crooked door needs repair Q: The antique door to our bathroom is solid oak. Unfor-tunately, it’s no longer closing straight — the door latch is lower than the hardware on the frame. It’s also scraping the floor when it’s opened and closed. How can we repair this? — Cliff, West Hartford, CT A: Fixing this problem can be as simple as adjusting the hinge pins of the door, or as complex as resetting them (which isn’t too complex, it’s just a two-person job). Sticking, dragging doors — or doors that won’t close completely — can have a number of causes. In newer houses, a door’s hinges might have been placed incorrectly, or the mortise of the door might not be deep enough (or too deep). Checking the depth of the mortise is simple: run a finger along the hinge leaf that’s set into the door. If the leaf isn’t flush with the wood, the trouble may lie there. The new wood might have swollen slightly, as well. Because you’re in an older home, the door probably opened and shut for years with no problem, meaning the hinges are (or were) set just fine. However, the door frames of aging homes typically settle as time passes, and the frame could be slightly warped. The hinges also might have worked loose. The first (and easiest) fix is to check all the hinges — tap them down into place if necessary — and tighten the screws holding the hinges to the door. If a screw won’t tighten down, remove it, insert a wooden toothpick (or several) into the hole, and reinsert the screw. If the door still sags, try putting a shim between the bottom hinge and the door. Remove the door completely from its hinges

(BPT) — Retire that old rule that says all the materials you use for your deck must match. Your railing no longer needs to be made from the same material as your decking. Pairing wooden deck planks stained in a natural hue with a metallic railing and decorative balusters creates a fresh, exciting look. Dress up basic wood and vinyl deck posts with fiber-reinforced concrete postcovers that resemble stone. There’s also no rule that says all your balusters have to

match. Try mixing balusters: alternate different styles of glass or metal, or mix regular metal or glass balusters with lighted balusters. Need help visualizing how your deck might look all dolled up using the mix-and-match trend? Deckorators offers a simple online tool, the Deck Visualizer, which allows you to mix different decking, balusters and post caps and see in advance how your personalized outdoor space might look. Log on to www.deckorators.com to learn more.

(this is where that second person comes in handy). Then, unscrew the bottom hinge leaf from the door. Using the leaf (the flat part) as a template, cut a piece of noncompressible cardboard, particle board or sheet brass (available in various precut sizes at the hardware store) to match. Punch out screw holes in the same area as on the leaf. Lay the shim against the door first, then fasten the hinge leaf to it. Rehang the door and check the fit. Conversely, if the door latch were higher than it should be, you would place a shim in the top hinge. Now, what if the latch lines up but the door still scrapes or sticks? Try covering the sticking edge with chalk, and open and close the door. Mark spots on the door edge where the chalk has rubbed away. Lightly sticking doors can be repaired by sanding the contact points. Don’t sand too much, or the door won’t fit tightly. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

For how long can someone take out a loan to borrow money to buy a car? It depends on the lender, but seven-, eight-, and even tenyear car loans are not unheard of. Generally, the longer the term of the loan, the lower the monthly payment but the higher the total amount of interest paid. Here is an exam-

ple. The average cost of a new car in 2013 is about $31,000. Suppose someone has $11,000 from savings and/or a trade-in car and borrows $20,000 to buy a car. Assuming an 8 percent interest rate, a three-year $20,000 loan would cost $627 per month for 36

months with interest charges of $2,562. A five-year loan would cost $406 a month for 60 months with a total interest cost of $4,332. In addition to higher financing costs, longer car loans also make car owners “upside down” for longer periods of

time. This means that their car is worth less than they owe due to rapid depreciation of value and slow pay-off of the amount borrowed (principal). Source: www. extension.org

Impatiens by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University of Vermont Impatiens, busy lizzy, or touch-me-not are all names you may see for this common and popular annual flower. It comes in many flower colors, with selections for either sun or shade. A new disease, however, is limiting the use and sale of the shade impatiens so you may need to seek alternative flowers if your garden gets little sun. The shade impatiens (Impatiens walleriana) is just one of 500 species in the Balsam family or Balsaminaceae, which includes the old-fashioned garden balsam (I. balsamina) and the newer hybrid New Guinea impatiens (I. hawkeri). The latter was introduced from a plant exploration on this South Pacific island in 1970. There are several other impatiens you may see, such as the 3 to 4-foot tall jewelweed (I. capensis), whose orange flowers the hummingbirds love but gardeners may hate as it self-sows readily. The name comes from the fact they are “impatient” to eject their seeds, as the slightest touch will cause ripe seedpods to open and scatter seeds to the wind. Originally thought to be indigenous to Zanzibar (an African island now part of Tanzania), the shade impatiens also was found to grow in the eastern regions of equatorial Africa. It was introduced to the western world in 1896 by Dr. John Kirk, a renowned British physician and naturalist who accompanied Dr. Livingstone on many of his African expeditions. As might be assumed, the shade impatiens should receive part shade (less than 6 hours direct sun per day), and will tolerate filtered sun to full shade. Although today’s impatiens varieties are more sun-tolerant than older varieties, too much sun will cause impatiens to have small leaves, few blooms, and little height. You may see these called “bedding” impatiens as they are commonly massed in garden beds.

Shade impatiens can be planted under trees although special care is needed, as the tree roots will compete with the flowers for space, water, and nutrients. Impatiens will require frequent watering and additional fertilizer, as will mature plants in containers. One easy solution under trees is to construct a slightly raised garden six to eight feet from the tree. Or you can dig out roots, if they are some distance from the tree, and fill the holes with a soil mix for planting. Other impatiens, such as the popular New Guinea cultivars (cultivated varieties), grow in full sun in the north, but tolerate part shade and in the south need part shade. Make sure they are kept well-watered if in sun, but are in well-drained soil as all impatiens like. If they do wilt, unless severely, they should revive soon with watering. Plants of shade impatiens generally grow from six to eighteen inches tall, depending on series, and one to two feet wide. Size will vary, depending on the spacing, moisture, available nutrients, and amount of sunlight. Flower form can be single, semidouble, or fully double blooms. New Guinea impatiens are generally upright with less spread. Flowers are single but up to two times larger than those of shade impatiens, and often in more brilliant and bright colors. Their foliage is much larger, stiffer, elliptical, and often in dark green to purplish colors. They are generally propagated by cuttings, while shade impatiens are generally from seeds. New Guinea impatiens, too, can be massed in beds but also are effective in fronts of beds, along walks, and in containers.’ Impatiens are often found in a named “series”, having up to two dozen or more flower color choices in each. Examples of shorter series of the shade impatiens with single flowers include Accent, Carnival, Dazzler, Infinity, Super Elfin, and Swirl. Series on the

taller side with single flowers include Blitz, Shady Lady, and Tempo. Taller series with double flowers include Cameo, Carousel, Confection, and Fiesta. Some popular series of New Guinea impatiens, again in many colors but not so many choices as with shade impatiens, include Celebrate, Gem, Harmony, Java, Lasting Impressions, Ovation, Paradise, Petticoat, Pizzazz, Pretty Girl, Pure Beauty, and Riviera. There are several named cultivars not in series, such as the orange-flowered Tango — an All-America Selections winner in 1989, and one of the first to be grown from seeds. If starting impatiens from seed, sow indoors 8 to 10 weeks prior to planting outdoors after the last frost. “Harden off” seedlings before transplanting outdoors, putting them out in part shade and bringing them in on frosty nights. If buying plants in spring, choose ones that aren’t wilted or showing signs of stress, with good leaf color, and well-branched. When planting, remember that the more tightly they are spaced, the taller they will grow. They’ll fill in sooner if closely spaced, but you’ll need more plants. For example, if plants are used for a border, space them eight to 12 inches apart so they will spread but remain low growing. Mix in compost before transplanting, especially if a sandy or clay soil. If you want to grow impatiens in window boxes or other containers, use a sterile or soil-less growing mixture rather than garden soil to allow for better drainage. Space according to the height you wish the plants to attain. Remember, container plants will need more frequent watering than plants grown in gardens. Water thoroughly after planting, and continue to water throughout the growing season if it doesn’t rain. Keep soil moist, but avoid overwatering as this could

encourage fungal diseases. Avoid overhead watering late in the day as the foliage will not have sufficient time to dry before nightfall and will be more prone to disease. Fertilize impatiens frequently, according to label directions on your product of choice. A couple of less serious impatiens problems for most include a virus and a fungus. Impatiens necrotic spot virus is carried between plants by the tiny thrips insect, and may cause stunting, ringspots on leaves, or brown to purple spots on leaves and stems. Unless severe, plants usually live. If plants are too wet or with insufficient space and air movement, they may get rhizoctonia crown rot. This fungus may cause yellowing, wilting, and plant collapse. Prevent it with proper culture, and neem oil sprays if the disease is suspected. The worst disease and a new one, with no good controls nor fungicides for home gardeners, is fortunately a problem just on the shade impatiens. Impatiens downy mildew has spread widely in the plant industry, and is the reason many growers have stopped selling these impatiens. Unique to this plant species, it is different from downy mildews of other plants. Symptoms begin with leaves slightly curling downward, yellowing, then growth becoming stunted. A white downy coating can be seen on undersides of leaves. Plants can soon drop all leaves and flowers and collapse. To avoid impatiens downy mildew, inspect plants before purchase. Don’t plant where you had impatiens die from this previously. Use good culture and plant spacing. If impatiens are infected, remove plants as the disease can live on the dead debris. Throw infected plants in the trash, not the compost. You can start plants from seeds, as these don’t carry the disease. The SunPatiens brand has shown high resistance to this disease. Or, alternative plants you may consider are caladium, coleus, begonias (there is a huge range of these to choose from), browallia, torenia, polka-dot plant, and New Guinea impatiens.
