You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever. ~ Psalm 30:11-12

April 13, 2013 Hello Again, Remember the good old days when the newspaper comics were worth reading? Little Henry, Blondie (Dagwood and Blondie), the Phantom, and even Popeye, the pipe smoking, bow-legged sailor man. Do you remember Dick Tracy with his two-way wrist radio phone, 30 years before cell phones? The good cops capturing the bad guys. For years, as an adult I wouldn’t miss the comic section in the newspaper. Now I usually skip over most of those pages. They are neither funny or meaningful. Let’s chat about any one of them — how about Popeye the sailor man? Recall: I’m Popeye the sailor man, I am who I am because I am who I am. I’m Popeye the sailor man! — with a toot-toot through his pipe. Some real thought went in writing. I am who I am because I am who I am. I am Popeye the sailor man. Isn’t that true about all of us? We are who we are because we are who we are. It has been thought that we are the accumulation of every thought and experience we have ever had. In my youth I read — man is mind and forever more he takes the tool of thought shaping what he wills, brings forth a thousand joys, or a thousand ills. Let’s face it, when a farmer plants a bushel of seed corn, he doesn’t get back a crop of barley. When we are too lazy to study, plan, act, and work — we will get back exactly what we deserve. If we do nothing, we will surely get back an equal portion of nothing. Just what does that actually mean? Let’s try this on for size. When a society will allow a healthy man who is too lazy to work live off the dole, the only thing society will get in return is that mans’ offspring with their hands out also and the process will continue from one generation to another. The Bible says, “If a man won’t work, he shouldn’t eat.” I read that over in England, they now have 5 generations of the same family living off welfare (the dole.) This does not necessarily apply to certain seniors or the handicapped. Sometimes on a temporary basis, other hard-working folk deserve help. What can society do to really help the abusers? Well, first of all you have to get their attention such as the farmer with the mule. It seems a farmer sold a mule to one of his neighbors stating — “This here mule will give you a full days’ work if you can get his attention. A few minutes after the new owner took possession of the mule, he was back at the farmers’ — yelling that mule is no good. “He refuses to move — just stands there swatting flies.” “Come with me,” the original owner said and before he reached the mule, he picked up a fence post and slammed it down over the mules head, picked up the leather lines, and said “Giddy-up!” With that, the mule stepped out briskly. “See,” the farmer said, “all you have to do is get his attention.” If we withheld the dole for food from those who after a physical exam proved to be sufficiently healthy to work for about 3 to 5 meals, we would get their attention. After a
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • April 13, 2013
Page 7
half week without food, a brand new idea would be born in their minds. A good idea — a great idea — food money for work would be just grand. Then afterwards, if we took some of that earned money away from them to support other non-workers, their explosion would make the atom bomb seem like a toy. If some do not agree with this, try answering the following question: Why should a working man or woman have to hand over part of their earned money to someone who refuses to work? We stopped for breakfast at Grandma’s Kitchen in St. Johnsville. Grandma turned to one of her men customers and said, “Oh, I didn’t know you were still here, I was getting ready to talk about you.” If you want to learn what people are saying about you, visit Grandma’s Kitchen. If you bribe the waitress during your next visit, she will tell you what they said. I can tell you from personal experience; if they don’t rake you over the coals, it can only mean you are a stranger. How cold has it been? Good question. A few nights ago I went out to the garage to pick up an old issue of the Grit newspaper. When I returned to the house I was shivering so hard my wife asked if that chattered sound was my teeth. I answered, “No, they are out in the hall in my jacket pocket.” Time to ponder: Swearing: A weak mind trying to make a strong point. Question: Why is it often said talk is cheap? Is it because the supply always exceeds the demand? I was told, or taught, by a preacher how to catch a skunk. Take a 3’ or 4’ length of metal stove pipe. Tie a burlap bag over one end. Place some food in the pipe towards the closed end. The skunk will go in after the food. Stand the pipe up. Cover the entrance and take the four-legged black and white kitty with a fluid drive for a walk out into the country. I’ve never tried it. If you do, let me know how you made out. My happy health thought for the week is eat plenty of spinach. It may not give you Popeye muscles but the farmers will say good things about you. It’s a for-sure your kids will not join the farmer’s praise group. “Good friends are difficult to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget.” It takes effort to be a good friend but the reward is worth the effort. You gain a good friend. The Holy Bible says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” If you ask Christ to come into your heart and life, he promises he will. Then you will have a best friend forever.

The Cakery Cafe wishes to thank everyone for our successful Grand Opening on April 6th, 2013. People traveled from as far away as Albany and Utica to come show their support. We would like to personally thank Paul Burkdorf, Kirk and June DuBois, Sue Race, Becky Wilcox, and John and Laurie Barney, Jr. We would not have had such a successful event without the help of our families. The Cakery Cafe opened its doors on December 15th, 2012 and we have had such overwhelming and positive support. We have become known for our delicious baked goods and unique specialty cakes. We will continue to do our very best to please each and every customer. Truly Grateful, Lynn Burkdorf, Marcia Rider & Char Nichols

Whatchamacallits A dibble, often referred to as a dibber, is a wooden stake used to pierce holes in the ground to plant seeds, seedlings or small bulbs with. There are many types of dibbles including Straight dibbles, T-handled dibbles, Lshaped dibbles, and Trowel dibbles. Modern versions of this garden tool are relatively the same as the one pictured. Some are made in metal, stainless steel and plastic now, as well as the original wood. Many have measurement markings along the point for gardeners to measure depth with. You can also find some with long handles and extensions to save gardeners from so much kneeling and bending. A dibble has been used for planting since Ancient Rome.
In early America, it was a common way to plant crops, with one farmer manning the dibble and a second dropping in the seeds behind him. Dibbles are inexpensive and sold online and at most
hardware and garden retail stores. Due to the simple engineering, however, many gardeners have begun making their own homemade versions instead of purchasing one.

Collecting by Larry Cox Cartoons and comics Q: In a recent column, you responded to a reader who had a hand-written letter by Charles Schulz. In your answer, you wrote that a comic strip by Schulz would, of course, be worth much more than a signed letter. I have several signed comic strips, including ones from “Peanuts,” “Pogo,” “Beatle Bailey,” “Alley Oop” and “Frank and Ernest.” I also have signed original political cartoons by Dan Fitzpatrick, Tom Engelhardt, Scott Long and Pat Oliphant. I certainly do not expect you to appraise my collection, but hope you can suggest where I might obtain such information. - Robert, Godfrey, Ill. A: Frederick P. Dose is a member of the International Society of Appraisers and has verified and valued more than 60,000 original cartoons for the Cartoon Museum of Ohio State University. To say that he is an expert in this field is an understatement. Contact Dose at 778 Pleasant Ave., Highland Park, IL 60035. Another useful contact is Curator, Cartoon Research Library, University of Ohio, 0231 Wexner, 27 West 17th Ave. Mall, Columbus,
OH 04310; cartoons@ osu.edu; and www. lib.ohio-state.edu. Incidentally, the Ohio State collection now houses more than 200,000 cartoons. Q: I have a casting reel that has never been used. I purchased it at a flea market, and I would like to know how much it is worth. - George, Albuquerque, NM A: Probably about what you paid. However, if you think you got a bargain, you might invest in a copy of “Fishing Collectibles: Rods, Reels, Creels” by Russell E. Lewis and published by Krause. It has more than 2,000 illustrations and is one of the better references. You might find your reel in it along with a current value. Q I have a Belgium bread baking stove, which I recently gave to my daughter. I know it has value, but how much? - John, Campton Hills, IL A: One of the better resources I can recommend is the Antique Stoves Association, which offers appraisals for $25. The address is 410 Flemings Road, Tekonska, MI 49092. If you are restoring a vintage gas or election stove, the Old Appliance Club is useful; call 805643-3532. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

& Taking Care Museums collect objects of art, history and science to exhibit them, study them and, equally important, preserve them as well as possible for the future. Taking good care of the collections takes a lot of effort and resources. But often, these objects have come to us through the ages, and we have an obligation to ensure that future generations will also have an opportunity to study and enjoy them, just as we do now. At the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute (MCI), scientists and conservators from a wide range of specialties perform research to extend our knowledge base of how materials change and deteriorate, to formulate recommendations for effective preservation strategies and to develop and test safe and effective conservation treatments. We communicate the results of this work to our colleagues in the museum community through a variety of means, including publications in the professional literature, presentations at professional conferences, and through our own training and education program. To help you take care of your objects, we offer technical

Collecting by Larry Cox Transistor radio Q: I have a Magnavox transistor radio, model AM-60. I had it in high school during the 1960s. It still works, and I have been offered $45 for it. Any advice? — Mollie, Gulfport, MS A: This offer should be sweet music to your ears, since it is valued at $10 in the Antique Trader “Radio and Television Price Guide” edited by Kyle Husfloen and published by Krause. Q: I have a souvenir booklet, “Here We Are — The Dionne Quints.” It was first published in 1936, but the edition I have was published the following year. What makes it unusual is that it was purchased during a visit to the family compound in Canada. — Margaret, Apache Junction, AZ A: I have seen the first edition of this same booklet sell in the $15 to $45 range depending on condition. Since your booklet is not a first edition, and assuming it is in good condition, it is worth perhaps $25. For a second opinion, visit the antique mall in your city Patterns of the Past, 300 W. Apache Trail, No.
101, Apache Junction, AZ 85120. Q: I have an old French’s mustard jar, patented Feb. 23, 1915. Is there any value to it? — Jim, West Warwick, RI A: You presented me with a jigsaw puzzle missing most of its pieces. What is the design of the bottle? Incidentally, despite what some readers might think, the dates on most bottles and jars are inconsequential, since the year represents only the LAST patent date. Some products, such as CocaCola, used certain designs for decades under the same patent date. Q: I have two books autographed by the author: “A Field Guide to Birds, East of the Rockies,” 4th edition, by Roger Tray Peterson, and “Wild America” by James Fisher. Both are in good condition. — Larry, Denver, PA A: I consulted with three book dealers, and they seem to agree that your books would probably each sell in the $15 to $25 range. I have personally seen the bird guides from this period priced for less, especially soft-cover editions. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Extend your car’s longevity with these spring cleaning tips (BPT) — The open road lies in front of millions of drivers who are ready to lower the windows and feel the warm breeze. Nothing curbs the excitement of a spring drive more than car issues that could have been avoided by simple maintenance to combat the lasting effects of driving through winter. Many people consider spring the perfect time to clean their homes, but it is also important not to forget the vehicle. The average vehicle stays on the road nearly 11 years, according to a study by Polk Research. This trend of consumers holding onto their vehicles longer than
usual continues to grow. To help protect what is typically the second largest investment for any consumer — your vehicle — here are simple tips to make sure you are ready for a successful spring travel season. • Seasons change ... so does tire pressure: As temperatures change, so can tire pressure. Proper tire inflation is essential for increased automotive safety, optimum driving performance and significant cost savings, including better fuel mileage. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations printed on the vehicle
door placard or in the glove box, and should be checked at least monthly. Over-inflation can lead to premature or irregular tire wear and under-inflation reduces a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3 percent, according to fueleconomy.gov. • Keep hydrated: Many fluids require attention, including the engine oil, transmission fluid and power steering fluid. Spring is the perfect time to make sure they are all clean and at the proper levels. Additionally, to help ensure maximum engine life, change the oil and oil filter every 3,000

miles, or as directed by your owner’s manual. • Breathe free: Replacing a dirty air filter can increase a vehicle’s life expectancy and fuel efficiency by reducing the strain on the engine, especially during warmer months. Over the winter months, salt, sand and other impurities may build up in a vehicle’s air filtration system, and re-
placing this air filter can improve acceleration time by around 6 to 11 percent, according to fueleconomy.gov. • April showers bring May flowers, and wet roads: Many times, consumers postpone tire purchases, but after enduring a harsh winter and looking ahead to the wet spring weather, it is not the time to have low
tread on your tires. The lower the tread depth, the less traction you will have on wet roads, and the greater the distance you will need to stop. For more helpful car care advice or information on tires for cars, light trucks, SUVs and more, visit your local Goodyear retailer or go online to www.goodyear.com.
