Hello Again, April 20, 2013 Every day is a new one in which we can find a chuckle or words of wisdom; something to make life more meaningful, interesting, or funable. Today’s chuckle was actually found in the June 9, 2012 Original Valley Pennysaver. A quote from Theodore Roosevelt: “Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell ’em, ‘Certainly, I can.’ Then get busy and find out how to do it.” Do you think that Mrs. Pelosi and President Obama, along with his political policy advisors, took Teddy’s advice, passed the not-thought-out health bill, and dreamed they maybe would get busy someday and find out how to do it? It sure seems to me that is actually the way they handled the national health bill. They no longer are alone in trying to find out how to do it. It appears that no one anywhere has the foggiest idea what it truly means — or in Teddy Roosevelt’s words — “how to do it.” On a national basis, thousands — if not millions — of employers are deeply concerned that this new health act will seriously hurt their businesses, possibly destroying everything. Why? Because absolutely no one can explain what it will mean to their companies. Why? Because no one, including Obama’s staff members know what it means — all thirteen thousand pages of it. It appears to all employers of 50 or more employees that this health bill is likened unto a major fire with the head of the fire department pouring gas on it just to see what will happen. So what are we all doing? Some are sitting with blinders on not knowing what to do. Go ahead and hire — prepare for future growth or cut back the size of companies. Some already have closed their doors. What is Lee Newspapers doing? We just introduced a new 26,000 circulation weekly newspaper titled “The Country Editor.” With the largest weekly circulation of any publication in the history of Herkimer County, actually delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. Our faith is first in the Lord and in our country. The United States of America and the good Lord have never let us down. On several occasions, our nation has fought against powerful adversaries and with Heaven sent help, we have always won. Our wish, prayer, and belief is that our elected officials will open up their eyes before it is too late, and set aside this so-called Obama health program until a proper answer can be found. Yes, U.S. citizens need proper health care but not at the expense of losing their jobs. A paycheck on Friday is still a nice thing to have, don’t you agree?

It appears that we quite often chat about serious matters so let’s change gears and finish with a little bit of nonsense. We country folk have to take our own fun wherever we find it — even at the expense of our city friends. It seems that a city gal dreamed of moving up to the country. While visiting a mink farm, she thought raising mink might be the way she could support her move to the country. She asked the mink farmer, “How many skins or pelts do you get from each mink?” “Well m’am,” he said, “the mink would get real nasty if you tried to get more than one.” I’m not sure if the following happened at J.R.’s Auction in Fort Plain but it could have. One of the village ladies, after spirited bidding, won the bid and bought a big green parrot. “Tell me,” she asked, “Can this beautiful parrot even talk?” After the auction staff stopped laughing, the auction clerk asked, “Who do you think was bidding against you?” Tell me — did this happen at your house? At three o’clock in the morning, the phone was ringing off the wall. When it was answered, a woman’s irate voice said, “If you don’t stop your dog from barking I’m either going to shoot him or call the cops.” Three o’clock the next morning the caller’s phone kept on ringing until she answered it. A man’s voice said, “I’m your neighbor and I don’t have a dog.” Some of the first three “chatters” might be considered a little bit of Irish blarney. However, this one is true. My mother who grew up in Ireland would often entertain us with some Irish humor such as this poem. Patrick McGinn, an Irishmen of note, fell into a fortune and bought himself a goat — “Goat’s milk,” said Paddy, “and now I will have my fill,” but when he got his nanny home, he found it was a bill. Sitting here at my writing table, I can see the beautiful spring sunshine. I believe I can hear my red Spyder Can Am motorcycle calling, “Hey, where are you? Let’s go for a ride.” As much as I enjoy chatting with you my friends, I have little will power and lots of won’t power. I won’t stay here continuing to chat and I will go home and crank up the red three-wheeler. If you see us glide by wave — two hands — I will only wave with one hand back. May God continue to bless you, your family and friends. Please remember to visit and thank the advertisers in this paper. They make the paper possible.

Whatchamacallits Farriers, horse owners and equine enthusiasts may be familiar with this tool. The horse hoof gauge measures the angles of a horse’s hoof so farriers can level each hoof evenly. The shoe-shaped section is lined against the horse’s hoof after the center ruler has been tipped back, forming a pocket to slip the hoof into. The ruler is then adjusted to fully measure the junction of the foot’s surface and hoof wall. Ideal angle measurement for a horse’s hoof varies between individual horses and also between front and back hooves. The horse hoof gauge pictured is made of iron, but the tool also comes in aluminum and brass. It has been used by farriers and blacksmiths for centuries.

Celebrate Earth Day! Observed on April 22 each year, Earth Day is a vehicle for interacting with the general public on matters pertaining to environmentalism, sustainability and conservation. Earth Day has helped to: • Raise the baseline of public consciousness with respect to environmental responsibility, sustainability and conservation; • Create a public mindset that accepts and even drives environmentally-relavant policy, practices and legislation. • Helped re-brand environmentalism from extremist confrontation to mainstream public responsibility. • Make the general public aware that they are stakeholders, not bystanders. • Spread ideas about environmentally-friendly products, practices and policies, and even education and career opportunities. Some fun facts about Earth Day The first Earth Day was held in 1970, the New York City Mayor, John Lindsay, shut down part of Fifth Avenue to speak at a rally, and in Washington, D.C., Congress went into recess so its members could talk to their constituents about the environment at Earth Day events. Earth Day had an immediate impact. By the end of the year, the United States saw some of its first major political efforts to protect the environment, including the founding of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Within five years, the EPA had banned the insecticide DDT and Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act and set emissions and efficiency standards for vehicles. The first Earth Day also changed public attitudes. According to the EPA, “Public opinion polls indicate that a permanent change in national priorities followed Earth Day 1970. When polled in May 1971, 25 percent of the U.S. public declared protecting the environment to be an important goal, a 2,500 percent increase over 1969.” By 1990, Earth Day was celebrated across the globe by 10 times as many people — 200 million. There are actually two Earth Days. The second is the Spring Equinox Earth Day, which originated in San Francisco. Conservationist John McConnell chose March 21 because he felt it represented equilibrium and balance. McConnell founded the Earth Society Foundation, which organizes this event. The Spring Equinox Earth Day Event is still held annually. Ever since the United Nations signed the Earth Day Proclamation written by McConnell in 1970, the Earth Society Foundation has rung the U.N. Peace Bell at U.N. Headquarters in New York to mark the occasion. Many cities have turned Earth Day into a
week-long celebration with events that educate children about the environment and encourage greater participation by the community in local green causes. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 192 countries every year. What can you do on Earth Day? • Serve up eco-snacks. Mix up some trail mix (with raisins, sunflowers, peanuts, almonds, chocolate chips) or assemble a cute flowerpower veggie tray. • Make a nature craft. Head to the backyard to collect goodies to turn into art! • Take a walk. Get outdoors for a walk around the block or local park with your family and friends. Check out www.mnn.com/family for tips on exploring the outdoors with your kids. • Pick up a great green read. “The Lorax,” “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” “Seeds of Change,” “The Giving Tree,” “An Inconvenient Truth.” There are so many great green reads to choose from. • Plant a garden. Grab a shovel, and some seeds and hit the dirt with your family. Whether you plant one tomato plant in a pot or a large garden of fruits and veggies, gardening with your kids wil teach them about the cycles of nature and the beauty of growing your own food. • Watch an eco-flick. Snuggle up on the sofa with your kids and your favorite brand of organic popcorn to watch a family friendly eco-movie. In the mood for a sobering documentary? Try a classic like Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” or a newer film like “Lunch Line,” “Waiting For Superman,” “The Cove” or “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.” • Host an eco-swap. What better way to get rid of your old stuff than to give it to friends who will find another use for it? Gather up your friends and neighbors for a good old community swap where everybody brings a bag or two of stuff (clothes, toys, you name it,) and then goes home with a bag or two of newish items in exchange. • Recycle. Recycling is a great way for kids to get involved in taking care of the planet. Talk to your kids about the items that wind up in the recycling bin and how they can be recycled into new products. • Bring it home. Earth Day is the perfect day to talk to your kids about the green steps you take around the house to protect the planet and how they can help. Turning off lights and faucets, recycling, keeping the heat and air down low, and cleaning green are great ways to teach your kids about your family’s impact on the planet, and the steps that you can all take to minimize it. Visit www.mnn.com for more great ideas!

Collecting by Larry Cox Perfume bottles Q: I am not a collector but have managed to accumulate several older perfume bottles, which I purchased at garage sales in the Chicago area. There are four I think could be valuable: “La Prairie” by Waterstone, “Nanette,” “Aluria” by Lucretia Vanderbilt, and “Paradise for Two.” Are they worth keeping, or just more clutter? I think I probably paid a few dollars each for them. -- Sandra, Naperville, Ill. A: I found all of your bottles referenced in “The Wonderful World of Perfume Bottles: Identification & Value Guide” by Jane Flanagan and published by Collector Books. According to Flanagan, “Paradise for Two” was manufactured in 1908 by Schaefer-Martin Co. and is worth about $50 with its original box. “Aturia” is from 1938 and sells in the $45 to $60 range. “Nanette,” your rarest bottle, was introduced in 1950 and often sells in the collector’s marketplace for $175. “La Prairie,” launched in 1993, is worth about $60. All things considered, you made four good investments. Q: I purchased a basket for $5 at a flea
market and am enclosing a picture of it. I am curious about who made it and what it was used for. — Betty, Jamestown, TN A: Sometimes a basket is simply a basket. This is the type of basket often found at import shops. Since they are mass-produced and not signed, your question about who made it is impossible to answer. It is of recent origin, and you probably paid about what it is worth. Q: I have a 5-inchhigh pitcher signed by Hohr Merkel. What can you tell me about it? — Beverly, Lake Lillian, MN A: I examined the pictures you sent me, and your pitcher appears to be from Copenhagen. Pitchers and vases of this type generally sell in the $15 to $25 range. I was not able to find the artist in any of my reference books. Q: I have eight Boy’s Life magazines from the 1960s, and I am wondering if they are worth keeping. — James, Hooksett, NH A: Not really, since most of the copies of this magazine I’ve seen from this period have been priced for about a dollar an issue. Growing bountiful brambles by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University of Vermont Raspberries and blackberries are the two most common bramble fruits — those shrubs with edible berries, and generally with thorns. Although fairly easy to grow, there are a few cultural tips and pruning techniques which will help you to harvest not only a crop of fruit, but a bountiful one of beautiful berries. If you’re just planting a berry patch, make sure to choose cultivars (cultivated varieties) hardy and suited to your area. This is especially true if buying online from distant nurseries, or you live in a colder part of the north. Many cultivars of red, and fall-bearing yellow, raspberries are hardy through most of the north country. Be aware that red raspberries generally bear one crop in midsummer, but some that are often called fall or everbearing have two crops — one in summer and one in fall. This is important in how they are cared for. Black and purple raspberries are generally less hardy, so look for hardier selections such as ‘Bristol’ or ‘Jewel’ black raspberry, and ‘Brandywine’ or ‘Royalty’ purple raspberry. Upright blackberries are generally the hardiest types, with the trailing and thornless ones generally less hardy. Some of the hardiest to USDA zone 5 (-10 to -20 degrees F average minimum in winter) include ‘Darrow’, ‘Illini’, and ‘Kiowa’. ‘Chester’ and ‘Triple Crown’ are somewhat hardy, semi-upright
or trailing types. Once you’ve chosen and obtained your brambles, plant in a welldrained soil in full sun. As they like to spread, allow plenty of space and don’t plant near flower or vegetable beds. Best is an area where you can keep rows mowed. Amend the soil with plenty of compost prior to planting. If you’re planting bare-root plants, cut tops back to a couple inches above the ground after planting. If planting rooted plants in pots, don’t cut back. Space plants 2-feet apart in rows (farther apart for trailing blackberries). Rows should be about 6-feet apart for raspberries, and perhaps 10-feet apart for blackberries. Often trailing blackberries need cross pollination between cultivars in order to fruit (so buy more t h a n one), but
most brambles are self-fertile and will produce fruit just with the aid of bees (so you can have just one cultivar). Water well for the first few weeks, if little rain,

until plants are established. If you have fertile soil you may only need compost at planting. Testing the soil with kits from your local Extension office will yield results on how much fertilizer and lime, if any, to add. Otherwise, use about 2 to 3 pounds of a low analysis, organic fertilizer such as 5-3-4 per 100 linear feet of row or a liquid fertilizer of your choice. Apply this again about a month after planting. Mulch with an organic material such as wood chips, straw, or shredded bark. In spring of the second year for raspberries, cut back to a couple inches high all plants that didn’t grow vigorously the first year. This encourages maximum cane growth for
a big crop the following year. Add to the mulch, and apply fertilizer as in year one. Fertilize twocrop cultivars again in mid-summer. Then, in fall of year two, cut tops of plants back so canes are about 4 feet tall. This makes a stiff plant that doesn’t fall over in winter’s snow and wind. Install a fence or other support if you didn’t already. This can be as simple as two strands of smooth wire on each side of the row between stakes, to keep future canes from falling over. In spring of future years, add fertilizer and mulch, as last year, to your raspberries. Trim
out any broken canes. Spray with a fungicide according to label directions if you spot any evidence of spur blight, and reapply if needed in early summer. If young beautiful
leaves i n s p r i n g suddenly turn yellow, and the canes die, this is likely spur blight. During summer, keep plants watered if insufficient rain during the 3 to 4 weeks prior to harvest. Remove any wilted tips which are likely from the cane borer, a common pest. Cut off just below the two circles you see on the cane near the tip where you’ll often find the larvae inside, living and dining. Another common pest on this and other members of the rose family in summer is the Japanese beetle. Simply knock off into a pail of soapy water. If using traps for them, place far away from your berry bushes. The traps have powerful attractants, and beetles will feed on your plants before getting
to the traps. Milky spore is useful on the beetle grubs only in warm climates. A recent pest causing great concern on soft fruits, including brambles, is the spotted wing drosophila. Late season fruits appear more vulnerable than those in summer. Like a fruit fly, this vinegar fly is so named as it is attracted to vinegar. So one control, and means for monitoring for this pest, is to hang plastic cups among your plants with apple cider vinegar. Use 32-ounce cups with several holes in the sides, and cover on top. Use a couple drops of dish detergent, which helps flies sink into the vinegar. The spotted wing drosophila first arrived on the west coast in 2008 from Asia, and has rapidly spread east and into the northeast, thanks mainly to human transport of infected fruit and plants. The flies lay eggs in ripening fruit, which hatch into larvae in the ripe fruit. So one way to prevent this pest is to cover bushes before fruits ripen with a very fine mesh netting or fabric row cover, as used on vegetable crops. Anchor well to the ground. Pick fruit right as they ripen, and remove any old or dropped fruit. Look for organic sprays containing either spinosad, pyrethrin, or azadiractin (from the neem tree), and apply as appropriate and as listed on the label. In fall, cut one-crop raspberries to ground level and remove all the canes (“floricanes”) that
bore fruit that season. These tend to be more woody and brittle, and lighter in color. Cut out all weak canes, and thin remaining first-year canes (those that did not fruit, the “primocanes”) to 6 inches apart. These will be the canes that bear fruit the following season. Cut back remaining canes to 4 to 5 feet high. If you’re growing two-crop cultivars just for their fall crops, you can cut all their canes back in late fall to a couple inches high, as they’ll bear fruit on canes produced the following summer. With the right care, you should get at least 10 years of harvests from your berry patch, often more, with first harvests the second year. Figure on one to two pints per mature plant, depending on cultivar and culture. For 4 people, depending on preference and uses, a guideline might be to plant 8 blackberry plants, 40 red raspberries, and 10 yellow or fall-crop raspberries. With such a patch you should have plenty for freezing (easy) and jams, in addition to fresh eating. If for fresh eating, choose several cultivars that ripen at different times. If for processing, you might choose ones that ripen at the same time for ease of handling. More details on culture of these and less common brambles such as dewberries, loganberries, and boysenberries, can be found in The Fruit Gardener’s Bible, by Lewis Hill and Leonard Perry.
