May 4, 2013 Hello Again, Isn’t experience supposed to be the great teacher? Let’s stop and chat about this for a while. England, France, Spain and, more recently, Soviet Russia spread their wings over an ever-growing number of countries until they nearly went broke. Even the great Roman Empire stirred up the world with a wooden ‘pudden’ stick and ended up not amounting to a row of beans. Can’t we Americans ever learn from the experience of other countries? I believe we — the USA — has military bases in over 190 countries. Who do we think we are? It appears we are supporting countries all over the world with borrowed money. Can you imagine that? With borrowed money? Now let’s take a not-so-long-ago look at a situation in this country. When I was in high school in Cooperstown, NY during the 1950’s I was the owner of a 1942 Chevrolet Club Coupe car, a Western Auto Doodle Bug scooter, a Harley Davidson 125 motorcycle and a new Olds Studio model trumpet. Oh yeah, a double-barreled shot gun too. Graduated from Cooperstown Central High School. During all of my high school years, I had a part time job which paid the minimum wage set by state law at 60 cents per hour. I received no financial assistance from anyone. I earned the money, by working, and with earned money purchased those items. In addition to those goodies, I also had money in my pocket, and paid cash in full at the time of each purchase. By now you must be wondering, am I tooting my own horn or is there a more meaningful reason? Recently it has been reported that the New York State education department is faced with a serious problem. A large number of high school students are dropping out of school permanently. It seems our educators are doing a magnificent job of teaching both parents and students that they should attend college after high school. I maintain that too much effort is spent on encouraging college education and too little on preparing for a successful life if a student decides that college is not for him. Now let’s get back to my high school years with the 60 cent per hour minimum wage. Remember — I had a job and was able to purchase, with my own earned money, not a handout from Dad or Mom. You might be asking why don’t high school students do the same today? The answer is simple, straightforward, and honest. They could not find a part time job now if they wanted one. Why? Who or what employer is going to shell out over $10. per hour to hire a high school student? Now — I ask how many of the dropouts would continue school if they had a part time job? It seems reasonable to me if they do not have the goal of college ahead and they do not have any money now, why wouldn’t they think about dropping out and finding some kind of job? Wouldn’t it make good sense to set a minimum wage at $5 per hour for students? With that part-time job, they would have spending money and possibly would even finish high school. At the $5 wage scale, employers would look more favorable on hiring a high school or college student and the student would learn what earned money really means and have pride. With the present proposed system, the student would not have a job nor any earned money. At the present time both our president and our governor are pushing for a raise in minimum wage. The only thing that will happen with a new higher minimum wage — fewer people will be employed, and students will be able to read about the good old days when their age group could hold down part-time employment. Jack up college costs and eliminate part-time employment, can you imagine what kind of an
Page 7
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • May 4, 2013 idiot would include that in his platform to run for a national or state office?
While on the subject of education, little Johnny was complaining about attending Sunday School. He said, “I don’t believe Daddy had to go to Sunday School.” “You can believe he did,” his mother said, “every Sunday.” “Well ok,” he grumbled, “but I don’t believe it will do me any good either.” My father’s doctor was a weather predictor on radio before he graduated from medical school. When Dad asked him for his assessment on his health problem, the doctor replied, “There is a 60 percent chance you will get better and a 40 percent chance you won’t.” Dad then asked, “What will happen if the 60 percent doesn’t work?” The doctor replied, “You will probably have a 40 percent chance of living and a 60 percent chance that you won’t.”
The Herkimer Home near Little Falls is steeped in history — well worth a visit. It is located at 200 State Route 169, Little Falls, NY or NYS Thruway Exit 29A, site entrance is the first right after the toll booths. Phone: 315823-0398. The Herkimer family local history started with John Jost Hercheimer in 1725. He was an industrial farmer and trader. As a major Mohawk Valley landowner, he aquired over 5,000 acres of land south of the Mohawk. By the 1770’s, his son Nicholas Herkimer had become the wealthiest member of the Mohawk Valley’s American-German Community. Nicholas Herkimer gained military experience as a captain in the French and Indian Wars, at the outbreak of the revolution. He fully embraced the American cause and was commissioned Brigadier General. During the summer of 1777 in an attempt to ward off a British attack at Ft. Stanwix, General Herkimer was seriously wounded in the leg. Six days later, his leg was unskillfully amputated. He died a few hours later. His residence, the Herkimer Home, is a true shrine to an early American hero and well worth a visit. We have often been told about residents of New York City who have never visited the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty. I wonder how many Mohawk Valley natives have never visited the Herkimer Home, went for a boat ride on the Mohawk River, or other historical places. Our Mohawk Valley is absolutely a God given garden spot, loaded with not only natural beauty but historical wonderment. We are blessed to be able to live here. Winter is over — come on out and enjoy our springtime valley. Say hello to your neighbors and thank God for giving us this beautiful valley to live in. If you see the red bike (roadster), be sure to wave. The old time farmers believed in spring tonics. The one I recommend, “Go to church on Sunday. It could offer the elixir which will greatly improve your life.” Fred Lee and Family

Whatchamacallits This sheep shearing tool is called a blade shear. Blade shears work similarly to scissors except that the hinge is at the end farthest from the point instead of the middle. Blade shears are still used today but in a more limited way. Blade shears leave some wool on a sheep and this is more suitable for cold climates where the sheep needs some protection from the elements. Blades are more commonly used to shear stud rams. Machine shears are a mechanical tool used in sheep shearing, sometimes known as handpieces. They operate similarly to human hair clippers. A power-driven toothed blade is driven back and forth over the surface of a comb and the wool is cut from the animal. Sheep are shorn in all seasons, depending on the cli-
mate, management requirements and the availability of a woolclasser and shearers. Ewes are normally shorn prior to lambing, but consideration is typically made as to the welfare of the lambs by not shearing during cold climate winters.

Collecting by Larry Cox Furniture polish Q: I have several older pieces of furniture in my home. They are mostly darker woods. Can you recommend a good polish? I just moved to a dry region and am afraid the pieces might begin cracking. — Art, Palm Desert, CA A: My grandmother made her own furniture polish, and I recommend it highly — if you can tolerate the turpentine smell. For her polish, take 1 cup of boiled linseed oil (which is how you buy it at the hardware store), add one cup of gum turpentine and one half cup of white
vinegar. Shake well. Use liberally on your furniture, wipe clean, repeat. After several weeks of using this polish, you will discover a nice, protective coat. Q: I recently inherited a set of sterling flatware. It is the Bridal Rose pattern by Alvin. Can you tell me when it was made? — Susan, Sun City, AZ A: Your flatware was made in 1903. It was one of the company’s most ornate patterns. Prices include dinner fork, $150; gravy ladle, $280; teaspoon, $150; and salad fork, $170. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Reduce pesticide use with smart plant choices Head off pest and disease problems by choosing plants that have built-in disease and insect resistance. • Cool season grasses such as tall and fine fescues, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye grass are appropriate for the Northeast. Choose fescues for shadier areas. Pick grass seed mixes with more bluegrass for areas that are sunny and will receive a lot of use. • Crabapples are a popular tree with multi-season interest. Choose varieties resistant to rust, scab
and fireblight — three very common diseases. • Roses are susceptible to black spot, but there are some resistant varieties. Or try the hardy “landscape roses” which offer beautiful flowers, excellent cold-hardiness and are disease resistant too. • White-barked birches are extremely popular, but plagued by the bronze birch borer. Choose the ‘Heritage’ river birch over the European white birch. Source: www. dec.ny.gov

Lawns: The best way to fertilize Over-fertilization or applying fertilizer at the wrong time can harm your lawn. First determine IF there is a nutrient deficiency that needs to be corrected. A soil test can determine this and also give essential information about soil pH. Adding fertilizer will not solve a pH problem. Too much nitrogen decreases root growth, increases susceptibility to disease and decreases tolerance of environmental stresses. Turf grasses grow best in soil that is neutral to slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7). Soils in the northeast often need lime to make the soil less acidic. It is best to apply a highcalcium or calcitic limestone rather than dolomitic limestone to avoid adding too much magnesium to the soil. Most lawns that are kept green all summer will need extra nitrogen. Nearly 50 percent of this can be supplied by leaving clippings on the lawn. The best time to apply the other 50 percent is in the fall (mid to late Octo-
ber). Instead of raking leaves, use a mulching lawn mower to shred the leaves and leave them on the lawn. By spring they will have decomposed, adding nutrients and organic matter to the soil. Lawns fertilized in the fall will stay greener longer, green-up earlier the following spring, and have higher energy reserves through the summer. This stored energy helps keep turf grasses healthy and more drought resistant. If you fertilize an existing lawn in mid-summer, you’re feeding the weeds. Broadcasting up to a half of an inch of finished compost on an established lawn provides nitrogen and other trace nutrients and builds organic matter in the soil. More serious nitrogen deficiencies should be corrected with a slow-release, organic source of nitrogen such as blood meal, cottonseed meal or fish meal. Apply in the quantities indicated by your soil test while soil temperatures are above 65 degrees.

This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Energy audits Q: Recently, my wife received a call from someone claiming to be from our electric company, offering us a “free energy audit.” I’m suspicious. Nothing is really for free, and I’ve heard stories of fraudsters getting money from senior citizens by posing as utility employees. Have you heard of this energy audit before? How can I confirm that it’s real or not? — Jesse F., Little Rock, AR A: Many utility companies do offer energy savings programs. The programs vary, but they often include some type of
review of your current energy usage (something like an energy audit). Still, you’re always right to be a little suspicious of generous offers. Your utility may very well have a free energy audit program. The way to find out is to call the customer-service number on your latest utility bill. Whether the original energy audit offer is legitimate or not, ask the customer service associate if the utility offers any sort of energy savings program — particularly one for senior citizens. Some offer energy audit kits, while others may refer you to a
third-party energy audit service. An energy audit basically takes stock of how efficiently your home is heated or cooled, and tries to pinpoint areas of the house where air is escaping. This is sometimes done by setting up a piece of equipment known as a “blower door” in the frame of your home’s front door. The blower door changes the air pressure inside the house slightly — enough for the audit provider’s sensors, often infrared, to detect where that air is escaping. From there, the provider recommends a few solutions.
Some energy audits are simple walkthroughs of your house, followed by recommendations to reduce energy use, such as replacing incandescent bulbs with newer flourescent bulbs. Other audits are do-it-yourself and might be as simple as filling out an online questionnaire. In any case, it’s worth it to find out if a low-cost or free energy audit is available. HOME TIP: The Department of Energy’s website offers details on types of energy audits and tips on ways to save energy. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Consider beginning, middle, and end-of-lease costs At the beginning of the lease, you may have to pay your first monthly payment; a refundable security deposit or your last monthly payment; other fees for licenses, registration, and title; a capitalized cost reduction (like a down payment); an
acquisition fee (also called a processing or assignment fee); freight or destination charges; and state or local taxes. During the lease, you will have to pay your monthly payment; any additional taxes not included in the payment such as
sales, use, and personal property taxes; insurance premiums; ongoing maintenance costs; and any fees for late payment. You’ll also have to pay for safety and emissions inspections and any traffic tickets. If you end your lease early, you may
have to pay substantial early termination charges. At the end of the lease, if you don’t buy the vehicle, you may have to pay a disposition fee and charges for excess miles and excessive wear. Source: www. federalreserve.gov

Staking peonies and other May gardening tips by Charlie Nardozzi, Horticulturist and Leonard Perry, UVM Extension Horticulturist Staking peonies, dividing and relocating daffodils if needed, and fertilizing perennial tulips are some of the gardening activities for this month. Set up supports for peonies now while plants are just emerging, so their large flower heads don’t bend to the ground next month. Circular flower rings with legs that stick into the soil are one option, but often the stems will bend where they droop and fall over the ring. Stakes encircled with twine around a plant is another option. The best support is afforded by wire mesh such as chicken wire with large holes (2-inch mesh is good). Spread it horizontally over the tops of the plants and attach it to some type of stakes at the sides. The flower stems and foliage will grow up through the mesh and
hide it. Daffodils and other spring-blooming bulbs need their foliage to replenish the bulbs for next year’s flowers, yet sometimes you might want to relocate them after they flower but before the foliage yellows and dies. You can move them after blooming to a new spot, just keep the foliage, bulb, and roots intact. Keep watering and give them a dose of fertilizer. Many hybrid tulip bulbs propagate themselves by splitting into many smaller bulbs after blooming. The mother bulbs will usually not bloom again and the babies are too small to bloom yet, so these tulips are best treated as annuals. “Perennial” tulips — Darwin tulips and Emperor tulips — on the other hand, don’t split so they will bloom for a number of years. Give them a dose of bulb fertilizer after blooming and
cut off the flower stalks. Leave the foliage intact until it dies. Ground covers such as vinca, ajuga, pachysandra, creeping foamflowers, lamium, and ivy can be divided and transplanted now to create new beds or enlarge existing ones. On a cloudy, cool day, use a sharp shovel or trowel to separate offshoots from mother plants and transplant them into a shady new location. Keep them well watered. If you’re seeing red over those devastating red beetles on your lilies, it’s time to get your squishing fingers loosened up. Lily leaf beetles often show up first in spring on leaves of the crown imperial (Fritillaria). Check both sides of the leaves and down inside the center whorl of leaves. Also check the undersides of leaves for tiny orange eggs. The larvae have orange, brown, or greenish yellow bodies that are
sometimes hidden under their excrement. The botanical insecticide Neem is reported to kill the larvae and repel the adults. For best control, spray every 5 to 7 days after the eggs hatch. Some people also report success with spraying a lightweight dormant oil on the foliage to kill the eggs and larvae. Clear grass and weeds from root zone areas around tree trunks, and remove any suckers growing from the base of the trees such as apples and crabapples. Spread compost, and top with 3 to 4 inches of bark mulch. Keep mulch an inch or two away from the trunks. Remove any tree wraps or guards you placed on young trunks for winter protection. If you’re planning to grow some warm-season crops like melons or sweet potatoes, don’t plant out until the ground has warmed to 65 to 70 degrees (F). Other-
wise, plants won’t grow and may just rot. Spread black plastic on the soil 2 to 3 weeks prior to planting to help warm the soil more quickly. You can
start such crops in pots indoors in a sunny spot where warmer, a couple weeks before planting out, to get a jump on their season.
The results of vehicle inspections held at community car care events across the country during Car Care Months in April and October 2012 reveal that 77 percent of vehicles need service or parts. An annual analysis of vehicle inspection forms found the top three problem areas posting the highest failure rates to be engine oil (22 percent), engine cooling systems (20 percent) and brake service (18 percent). Eight percent of the vehicles inspected had the “check engine” light on and new air filters were needed in 19 percent of
the vehicles. At least one belt was reported as unsatisfactory in 14 percent of the vehicles inspected, and 10 percent required at least one new hose. Battery cables, clamps and terminals needed maintenance in 11 percent of the vehicles inspected, while 10 percent of the batteries were not properly held down. When checking lubricants and fluids, the three top failure rates were: low or dirty motor oil at 22 percent; low, leaky or dirty coolant at 20 percent; and inadequate brake fluid levels at 18 percent. Power
steering, coolant and transmission fluids were also checked and had failure rates of 14 percent and below. Approximately 14 percent of vehicles had front windshield wiper failures, and 1 percent needed service to rear wipers. At least 13 percent of vehicles needed lights replaced, including headlights, brake lights and license plate lights. Improperly inflated tires were found on 9 percent of the cars and 10 percent had worn tread and were in need of replacement. Tire pressure failure rate has steadily declined after
recording the highest rate of 54 percent in 2003. “Neglected vehicle care almost always means much higher costs down the line in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.
“Following a routine maintenance program like the Car Care Council’s free personalized schedule and e-mail reminder service can help you drive smart, save money and make informed decisions.” The Car Care Council is the source of informa-
tion for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For more information, visit www.carcare.org.

YEAR 2013 ANNUAL DRINKING WATER QUALITY REPORT VILLAGE OF PALATINE BRIDGE PO Box 208, 11 West Grand St. • Palatine Bridge, NY 13428 Ph: 518 - 673 - 2917 • Fax: 518 - 673 - 3481 ID #2800142 INTRODUCTION: To comply with State regulation, The Village of Palatine Bridge will be annually issuing a report describing the quality of your drinking water. The purpose of this report is to raise your understanding of drinking water and awareness of the need to protect our drinking water sources. Last year, your tap water met all State drinking water health standards. We are proud to report that our system has never violated a maximum contaminant level. This report provides an overview of last year's water quality. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to State standards. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your drinking water, please contact Mr. Rodney Sutton, Water Superintendent, Village of Palatine Bridge, 11 W. Grand St., Palatine Bridge, NY 13428; Telephone (518) - 673 2917 or in an emergency (518) -791-8079. We want you to be informed about your drinking water. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled village board meetings. They are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, 7:00 PM at the Village Hall, 11 W. Grand St; telephone (518)-6732917. Village office hours are 8:00am to 1:00pm Monday thru Thursday, 3pm to 6pm Thursday and 8:00am to 11:00am Friday. WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM? In general, the sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activities. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: microbial contaminants; inorganic contaminants; pesticides and herbicides; organic chemical contaminants; and radioactive contaminants. In order to ensure that tap water is sage to drink, the State and the EPA prescribe regulations, which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The State Health Department's and the FDA's regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. The Village of Palatine Bridge draws its water from a ground water source. The Village is served by one drilled well 1000-feet deep located 1.5 miles north of the Village boundary on State Highway Route 10. Pumping capacity for this well is approximately 500 gallons per minute. Treatment of the raw water produced by the well consists of chlorination, which is used for disinfection to protect against contamination from harmful bacteria and other organisms. We have a 300,000-gallon underground storage tank and a 250,000-gallon above ground storage to meet consumer demand and provide adequate fire protection. We provide water through 342 service connections to a population of approximately 900 people. Our average daily demand is 165,000-gallons per day. In February of 2005 a new triplex water softening system was installed to provide better water quality. SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT The NYS DOH has completed a source water assessment for the Village of Palatine Bridge water system, based on available information. Possible and actual threats to this drinking water source were evaluated. The state source water assessment includes a susceptibility rating based on the risk posed by each potential source of contamination and how easily contaminants can move through the sub-surface to the well. The susceptibility rating is an estimate of the potential for contamination. See section "Are there contaminants in our drink water?" for a list of contaminants, if any that has been detected. The source water assessments provide resource managers with additional information for protecting source waters into the future. As mentioned before our water is derived from a drilled well. The source water assessment has rated this well as having a high susceptibility to bacteria, viruses, and protozoa and a medium- high susceptibility to herbicides, pesticides and nitrates. These ratings are due primarily to agricultural activities in the assessment area. In addition, the well draws from an unconfined aquifer of high hydraulic conductivity. While the source water assessment rates our well as being susceptible to microbials, pleas note that our water is disinfected to ensure that the finish water delivered into your home meet New York State's drinking water standard for microbial contamination. A copy of the source water assessment, including a map of the assessment area, can be obtained by contacting us as noted in the introduction in the first section. ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER? As the State regulations require, we routinely test your drinking water for numerous contaminants. We test your drinking water for inorganic compounds, nitrite, nitrate, lead and copper, volatile organic compounds, and synthetic organic compounds. In addition, we test for coliform bacteria once a month, and fluoride and chlorine daily. The table presented below depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water. This table shows the results of our monitoring for the period of January 1st to December 31st, 2011. The State allows us to test for some contaminants less than once per year because the concentration of these contaminants does not change frequently. Some of our data, though representative, are more than one year old. You may obtain a copy of all our test results by contacting the Village office or Rodney Sutton. It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, might be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or the New York State Department of Health, District Office, 5665 State Route 5, Herkimer, NY, telephone; (315-866-6879).
Parts per billion (ppb) or Micrograms per liter (ug/l) - one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000. Parts per trillion (ppt) or Nanograms per liter (nanograms/l) - one part per trillion corresponds to one minute in 2,000,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000,000. Maximum Contaminant Level - (mandatory language) The "Maximum Allowed" (MCL) is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal - (mandatory language) The "Goal" (MCLG) is the level of a contaminant in drinking water below, which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. n/a-not applicable WHAT DOES THIS INFORMATION MEAN? As you can see by the table, our system had no violations. We have learned through or testing that some contaminants were detected; however these contaminants were detected below the level allowed by the State. IS OUR WATER SYSTEM MEETING OTHER RULES THAT GOVERN OPERATIONS? During the year 2012, our system was in compliance with applicable State drinking water operating, monitoring and reporting requirements. DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS? Although our drinking water met or exceeded state and federal regulations, some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Infants and young children are typically more vulnerable to lead in drinking water than the general population. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as results of materials used in your home's plumping. If you are concerned about elevated lead levels in your home's water, you may wish to have your water tested and flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using tap water. Additional information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline. Immuno-compromised person such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotheraphy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Definitions: Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Action Level (AL) - the concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements, which a water system must follow. Treatment Technique (TT) - a required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water. Non-Detects (ND) - laboratory analysis indicates that the constituent is not present. Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU): A measure of the clarity of water. Turbidity is excess of 5 NTU is just noticeable to the average person. Milligrams per liter (mg/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one million parts of liquid (parts per million-ppm) Micrograms per liter (ug/l): corresponds to one part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (parts per billion - ppb) Nanograms per liter (ng/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid to one trillion parts of liquid (parts per trillion - ppt) Picograms per liter (pg/l): corresponds to one part per of liquid to one quadrillion parts of liquid (parts per quadrillion ppq) Picocuries per liter (pCi/L): A measure of the radioactivity in water. WHY SAVE WATER AND HOW TO AVOID WASTING IT? Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water. • Saving water saves energy and some of cost associated with both of these necessities of life. • Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the cost of treating the water. • Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions. So that essential fire fighting needs is met. You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include: • Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. • Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day, 3600 gallons in 6 months. A steady drip or stream 1/16" at 60lbs pressure can waste 74,000 gallons in 3 months. • Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of otherwise invisible toilet leaks. A 100 gallons a day can amount to 9000 gallons in a 3-month period or 18000 in a 6-month period. • A One Quarter (1/4) inch Hose or stream of water at 60 lbs of water pressure can amount to a lost of 13,000 gallons or more in 24 hours. WATER RATES In 2012 the water customers in Village of Palatine Bridge were charged $8.00 per 1000 gallons with a minimum of $96.00, while out of village limits customers were charged $16.00 per 1000 gallons with a minimum of $192.00 CLOSING Thank you for allowing us to continue to provide your family with quality drinking water this year.
