May 11, 2013 Hello Again, What a marvelous change in the weather. Now it’s really springtime in the Mohawk Valley country. I believe when God created the Garden of Eden, he gathered all the tricks he had learned and moved on to Northern New York State creating its lakes, rivers, rolling forested hills, and the Mohawk Valley, his palette of true beauty. Traveling on the little red roadster over the country roads, I have watched farmers preparing their fields. Some are planting alfalfa, small grains and corn. Soon those tilled fields will be covered with new green. I’ve even noticed a few fishermen out there trying their luck. I was told they have been catching a few 3 1/2 pound bass and small walleyes. A friend told me a few years ago when he went fishing if he didn’t have bad luck, he’d have no luck at all. Last year I was 77 years old and was told that due to my age, I did not need a fishing license but I had to pay $5 yearly for a pass that states I do not need a license. Only in good old — heading for socialism — New York State are you required to pay $5 to prove you don’t need to pay any more. When was the last time you heard a speech or read a newspaper or magazine article uplifting our great America and the way of life it offers? The following excerpts presented by Verl A. Teeter, in the Grit newspaper, 1970, are worth reading and thinking about. All I can add is, “God bless America, the land we should love.” The true American believes in liberty, justice, equal opportunity, and the dignity of man. He also believes that the government is the servant of the people, not their master. He realizes that freedom can destroy us if we do not know how to use it. The true American is proud of America; proud that he is a citizen of a republic. He realizes that American citizenship is a great privilege and a priceless treasure. He understands that both entail certain responsibilities on the part of each individual. The true American protects and upholds the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and our American form of government. He helps preserve the conditions that made America great. The true American believes in the free enterprise system and in the ownership of private property. The true American is a law-abiding citizen. He obeys and respects the laws of his community, state, and nation. He is informed on national affairs so that he may vote intelligently and use his rights of citizenship wisely. He casts his vote in all elections and votes for what he believes to be the best for his country. He helps to elect honest, capable, efficient, and patriotic public officials. The true American speaks out against evil and corruption in his community, state, and nation and wages a fight against crime and immorality. The true American is tolerant. He respects the convictions of others, their property rights, and proper constituted authority. The True American has self-respect. He takes pride in supporting himself and his family. He is thrifty. He avoids extravagance and lives within his income. He meets his obligations and pays his bills promptly. He is industrious. He enjoys his work and believes that all honorable work is dignified and necessary, and that there is no substitute for honest toil.

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • May 11, 2013

Page 7

The true American is broad-minded and humane. His heart and hand go out to help the needy and the helpless. The true American is a good citizen. He endeavors to live by the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule. He attends regularly the church of his choice and participates in community affairs. The true American helps keep our educational, religious, and political institutions free from communistic influences and propaganda. The true American, by precept and example, instills in his children moral and spiritual integrity. He trains his children the way they should go, believing that the family is the backbone of the nation. The true American believes in the two-party system. He serves on juries if called upon to do so. The true American desires world peace but not the kind that is to be had by surrendering to the communists. He is a loyal and patriotic citizen. The true American believes the noblest life is one that renders service and that the ultimate aim in life is to serve God and his fellowman to the best of his ability. He believes in serving his country, rather than having his country serve him. He makes his voice heard and his actions felt. A minister at a local Herkimer church saw a young boy studying the scroll honoring those who died in time of war. The boy wondered why all the names were there. The minister answered, “They are the names of the boys who died in the service.” The boy then asked, “Which service? The 9:30 or 11:00 one?” Talking about getting your money’s worth: a bachelor farmer placed a “Wife wanted” ad in the statewide farm paper. The ad read, “Wanted: Wife with a tractor. Send picture of the tractor.” The farmer said to his wife, Janet, “Well, my dear, I’ve carried you safely over all of the rough spots in the road of life, haven’t I?” “Yes,” she said, “and I don’t believe you missed a single bump.” The disgruntled farmer said, “Ya! Life is like a bowl of cherries after you spit out the pits.” Thinking of a deep subject — have you got your lawn mower out yet? Remember Roy Rogers, “Happy trails to you, until we mow again,” or something like that. Is it ever polite to brag? Our company is bursting at the seams with the wonderful reception The Country Editor is receiving in Herkimer County. Each week over 26,000 homes in Herkimer County receive The County Editor by U.S. mail. Possibly bragging is not proper… however, it is always proper to say thank you. Thank you all 26,000 homes (which actually equates to 91,000 people) in Herkimer County for your reception of this new, weekly mailed publication — The Country Editor. A life without God is barely worth living. Say hi to your neighbor. Wave when the red Spyder goes by. Fly with the Lord as your life companion. Fred Lee and Family

by David Uffington The biggest targets for identity theft The Federal Trade Commission has released a report with new information about identity theft. While it’s generally believed that seniors are the most likely victims of this type of fraud because they’re assumed to be more vulnerable, the report shows that’s not the case. The Consumer Sentinel Network, the database used in the report, is available only to law enforcement and includes information input by a long list of agencies and organizations, the Better Business Bureau, the FBI’s Internet Crime Com-plaint Center, the Post Office, and even the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. During 2012 alone, 2 million complaints were logged, broken down as follows: 52 percent fraud, 18 percent identity theft and 30 percent other types of complaints, such as debt collection, banks and lenders, prizes, sweepstakes and lotteries, and impostor scams. Government documents and benefits were the most common type of identity theft, followed by credit cards and phone or utilities. Florida, Georgia and California have the highest per capital rate of identity theft. The average dollar loss per fraud victim was $2,350. In the Consumer Sentinel Network Data

Book, it appears that the older the age group, the higher the percentage of overall fraud victims, until reaching the seniors. 20-29: 15 percent 30-39: 16 percent 40-49: 19 percent 50-59: 23 percent 60-69: 17 percent Over 70: 9 percent However, when it comes to actual identity theft, the numbers are reversed: 20-29: 21 percent 30-39: 19 percent 40-49: 18 percent 50-59: 17 percent 60-69: 11 percent Over 70: 8 percent How does this happen? Scammers pretend to be from government agencies or credit-card companies and call to ask for personal information. Twenty-somethings, raised on electronic gadgets, give it to them. If you’ve become a victim of identity theft, contact your bank and credit card companies. If you think your information has been compromised, put a freeze on your credit information at all three credit bureaus. Order copies of your credit reports and study them carefully to make sure all the information is correct. File a complaint with the FTC (www.ftc.gov) and the police. The information you add to the database will help law enforcement in their investigations. To learn more about the Sentinel Network, go to www.FTC.gov/sentinel. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Whatchamacallits Bannerstones are Native American artifacts typically found in the Eastern United States. The holes are usually bored all the way through but some have been found with holes that extend only part way through. They are made from banded slate or other colored stone. The bannerstone was a hunting accessory and was both practical and ceremonial. They were weights attached to spear throwers, called atlatls. The whipping sound an atlatl would make when swung to project spears could be loud enough to alert prey. Bannerstones served as a muting device, their added weight making the atlatl heavier and the hole redirecting wind noise, thus muffling the hunting tool. Bannerstones were also supernatural talismans for increasing

the spear-throwers efficacy. Bannerstones may also have served as emblems of prestige and status, as well as coming-ofage symbols for young hunters. ~~~ Have your own Whatch-

amacallit? Send picture and description to eenger@leepub.com. Visit our Facebook page each week to see if you can figure out what the upcoming Whatchamacallit is!

This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Kid-tough baseboards Q: For a recent do-it-yourself project, I replaced the baseboard along two walls of the kids’ playroom with a length of two-byfour wood. The kids tend to ram their toys into the base of the wall and this dented and marred the original baseboard and even damaged the drywall behind it. I removed the original baseboard. I also patched the damaged sections of drywall by cutting them away and replacing with new pieces of drywall held in place with wooden strips behind the drywall. This also helped to reinforce the base of the wall.

Next, at my homeimprovement store, I had two pieces of 2-by-4 cut to the length of each wall’s base. I left a quarter-inch off each end because I decided to leave the baseboard in place on the other walls. There was one error here: I had to re-cut one piece of wood because I forgot the two pieces would intersect at one corner. But it was not too difficult to saw off a couple of inches from one end. I attached the new “bumper boards” to the wall studs. To make it easier, I located and marked the studs first, then pre-drilled the boards. Once the boards were in place, I attached them to the studs using 4-inch wood screws, counter-

sunk the screw heads slightly and covered with wood putty to hide them from the kids. Finally, I painted the new boards. The plain wood tended to soak up paint, so I had to put on two coats of primer first. Then I painted them with a “kid-resistant” paint (available at any paint store) with an eggshell finish that is easier to wipe clean. Once the kids are grown, I will likely replace the bumper boards with regular baseboard. You can save the old baseboard, but mine is too damaged, so I plan to scrap it and start fresh. Hope your readers can benefit from my experience! — Sam G., Baltimore A: That sounds like a great fix for

the playroom. Thanks for sharing! Readers, to remove baseboard without damaging the drywall beneath or marring the paint, first run a box cutter or a small putty knife along the top of the baseboard to separate paint, glue or other material from the wall. Next, using a nail set (or a sturdy nail) and a hammer, locate the larger anchoring nails along the baseboard, place the nail set against the nail head, and hammer a few times. This will push the baseboard back slightly, creating a gap. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

How does purchasing a home compare with renting? The two don’t really compare at all. The one advantage of renting is being generally free of most maintenance responsibilities. But by renting, you lose the chance to build equity, take advantage of tax benefits, and protect yourself against rent increases. Also, you may not be free to decorate without permission and may be at the mercy of the landlord for housing. Owning a home has many benefits.

When you make a mortgage payment, you are building equity. And that's an investment. Owning a home also qualifies you for tax breaks that assist you in dealing with your new financial responsibilities — like insurance, real estate taxes, and upkeep — which can be substantial. But given the freedom, stability, and security of owning your own home, they are worth it. Source: HUD.gov

How can I determine my housing needs before I begin the search? Your home should fit way you live, with spaces and features that appeal to the whole family. Before you begin looking at homes, make a list of your priorities — things like location and size. Should the house be close to certain schools? your job? to public transportation? How large should the house be?

What type of lot do you prefer? What kinds of amenities are you looking for? Establish a set of minimum requirements and a ‘wish list.” Minimum requirements are things that a house must have for you to consider it, while a “wish list” covers things that you’d like to have but aren’t essential. Preventing weeds in your lawn

Weeds move into lawns when conditions favor their growth over that of turf grasses. A healthy lawn will be able to endure drought, diseases and pest infestations better than a stressed lawn. Healthy grasses can also compete better with undesirable weeds. Promote lawn health by mowing and watering properly: • Mow at a 2.5 -3” height. Taller grass develops deeper roots, an advantage during dry spells • Water deeply once a week. Lawns need about an inch of water a week. Supplement with

irrigation only when necessary • Water early in the morning • Water at a rate that the soil can absorb To control the spread of broad-leaf weeds, try using corn gluten, a nontoxic corn by-product. Apply at the suggested rate in the spring (when forsythia is blooming). Corn gluten will not kill existing weeds, but will prevent new ones from germinating each year that it is applied, and it adds some nitrogen to the soil as well. Source: www. dec.ny. gov

Help for tough-to-weed areas Weeds often take root in between pavers or stones used for walkways and patios, as well as in cracks in asphalt or concrete. Manage weeds in these areas with a highly acidic spray to kill the aboveground portion of the plant. The commercially available sprays are typically made with vinegar or lemon juice either alone or in combination with

herb or citrus oils such as thyme and orange. These sprays work well on annual weeds. Pouring boiling water over the weeds is also an option. Killing perennial weeds with either method will take repeated applications to exhaust the nutrients stored in the root. Source: www. dec.ny.gov

Calendar of Events am - noon. NYS Public Health Law requires that all dogs, cats and domestic ferrets shall have initial vaccinations administered against rabies no later than 4 months of age and stay up to date with revaccinations. Revaccinations are required one year later and a booster shot every three years. It is important to have pets vaccinated in a timely manner in order for the pet to be considered protected against the virus. Pet owners should bring proof of their pet’s last rabies vaccination. This helps the veterinarian determine whether the pet will receive a one or three year vaccination; without it your pet will

receive a one year vaccination only. To assure the safety of other pets and people; dogs must be leashed; cats and ferrets must be contained in a pet carrier or box when attending the rabies clinic. Veterinarian administration fee is $10/Rabies Vaccine. Contact Montgomery County Public Health, 518-853-3531. What is the “Buyers Guide” that is posted on a used car?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires all dealers who sell used cars to post a “Buyers Guide.” The guide tells you the following: • Whether the vehicle is being sold “as is” or with a warranty • What percentage of the repair costs a

dealer will pay under the warranty • That spoken promises are difficult to enforce • To get all promises in writing • To keep the Buyers Guide for reference after the sale • The major mechanical and electrical systems

on the car, including some of the major problems you should look out for • To ask to have the car inspected by an independent mechanic before you buy it Source: www. extension.org

How can people save money on a used car?

Before buying any used car: • Compare the seller’s asking price with the average retail price in a “bluebook” or other guide to car prices found at many libraries, banks, and credit unions. • Have a mechanic you trust check the car, especially if the car is sold “as is.” Consider purchasing a used car from an individual you know and trust. They are more likely than other sellers to charge a lower price and point out any problems with the car. Source: www. extension.org

It’s easy being green when it comes to your car Kermit once said that “it’s not easy being green,” but when it comes to your car, the opposite is true. Consumers can help protect the environment and keep more “green” in their wallets by following a few simple steps from the Car Care Council.

• Hang onto your current vehicle and limit the number of new cars you buy over the course of a lifetime. Extending vehicle life is as simple as taking care of your vehicle properly. • Follow a vehicle service schedule including fuel-saving

steps like performing regular tune-ups, keeping tires properly inflated, replacing air filters regularly, changing oil regularly and checking your gas cap. Routine maintenance helps reduce emissions and fuel consumption, saving

money at the pump. “Basic vehicle maintenance goes a long way toward protecting the environment, extending vehicle life and improving fuel economy,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

Renovating an old orchard by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University of Vermont Perhaps you have property with some old apple trees, or perhaps you had a fruit tree orchard that has suffered from years of neglect due to other priorities. You’re faced with a decision if you want to make changes — should you get out a chainsaw or hire a tree service for such removals, or should you try and save the trees? If the latter, how should you begin? If you want to renovate an orchard, first assess which (if any) trees are worth saving. Follow a few simple pruning practices slowly over a few years to reclaim desirable trees. When deciding which fruit trees to save in a neglected orchard, keep in mind that a small number of well-cared-for trees will be far more productive and much more satisfying than a large or-

chard of even partially neglected ones. Those with good tasting fruit (even if small) are candidates to save. Their trunks should be solid and firm, not hollow on the inside, nor falling apart. A worthy tree to save should have one trunk, not multiple ones growing in clumps (usually arising from “suckers” or offshoots of the original trunk, which may have died). If trees are evenly spaced apart, they were likely those planted and not seedlings that came up randomly. A few such trees from seedlings may be worth saving if they have good fruit or are ornamental. Trees worth renovating should have a good branching structure, with good lower branching, and of a good height and habit. Those either too tall (over 18 to 20 feet high) or short, or lopsided, or straggly (perhaps lower limbs were browsed off by animals),

would be difficult to reclaim. Finally, consider if the trees are important either historically (they may be antique or heirloom cultivars seldom seen) or sentimentally (as in being planted by a relative). Once you’ve decided which trees to work on saving, follow these steps. 1. Remove unwanted trees. These are ones that bear no fruit or none desirable, are too close together, are from seedlings, are weak and just too old, or are weedy — either fruiting or others. 2. Remove sprouts arising from the base of trees you want to save. These “water sprouts” will sap energy the main tree needs to regrow from subsequent pruning. 3. Burn or chip tree prunings to avoid keeping around any diseases. 4. The first year, lightly prune trees anytime, removing broken, diseased, or rubbing and crossing

limbs. An old tree won’t tolerate severe pruning at first, so start gently. Prune whole limbs off, don’t just “head back” or prune the ends. Remove any old fruit. Check the soil pH or acidity (kits are available from your local Extension office and many complete garden centers). Correct, if needed, to 6.5 to 7. Fertilize lightly in spring as with 100 pounds of dried manure spread evenly, or lightly with an organic complete fertilizer, or 5 to

7 pounds of 5-10-10, or similar. Then, in early summer, thin fruit when the size of marbles so that they are at least 6 inches apart, and only one in a cluster. Mow or mulch around trees during summer. Remove any “drops” (those fruit that fall off naturally in June, and during fall). Rake leaves up in fall. 5. The second year, when trees are dormant but temperatures above freezing, thin out some limbs to allow more light

into the center, removing whole limbs. Remove weak or very old limbs first. Proceed with other culture as in the first year. 6. The third year, prune similar to year two, only more heavily. Follow culture as previously. 7. Finally, in subsequent years, prune normally with normal culture. More details on such culture to grow apples successfully can be found in the book The Fruit Gardener’s Bible.

Adventur ous folks thinking about taking a road trip this season may consider renting or purchasing a recreational vehicle (RV) for the trip. T raveling by RV has its share of supporters and detractors, and it’s best for those new to RVs to consider their advantages

and disadvantages. RV vacations have the potential to be quite memorable. Ensuring they’re memorable for the right reasons can mean the difference between an enjoyable trip and one that’s full of problems. RV trips tend to be carefree adventures that do

not follow a strict itinerary. RVers need to be able to adapt to changing weather conditions, traffic, detours and other unforeseeable situations. If you’re the type of vacationer who prefers a set schedule with everything spelled out for you, RV vacationing may not be the way to go. According to a recent study by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, approximately 8 million Americans own an RV and use them on vacation. There are many advantages to RVing, but also some disadvantages. Here are some things to think about before embarking. Advantages Nothing says family time quite like being together in an RV and seeing the country. The close quarters mean everyone gets to stick together and enjoy each others’ company. With the driver

Open houses benefit buyers and sellers (NAPSA) — The next time you’re thinking about buying or selling a house, you might want to open your mind to the benefits of an open house. What buyers should do Buyers should make the most of each open house they visit and remember to keep an open mind. Here are some tips for visiting open houses: • Check everything in the house including appliances, the size of closets, storage areas and the views from the windows. • Walk around the property and check such things as the brick and mortar and siding. • Drive around the neighborhood and get a feel for the area. • Talk to the Realtor hosting the open house and pick his or her brain about the condition of the home, recent upgrades and the neighborhood. What sellers should do As a seller, an open house is about putting your home’s best foot forward. Here are some tips for a successful open house: • Declutter and clean the house. • Replace burnt-out lightbulbs and wash the windows. • Mow the front lawn and clean the walkway.

• Fix maintenance issues such as dings in walls or leaky faucets. Two more things to consider 1. Last year, 45 percent of all buyers used an open house as a resource in their home search process, according to the National Association of Realtors® Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. Open houses are a way for buyers to get an idea of what they can afford and what is available in their market. For sellers, it’s a chance to market the home and attract potential buyers. 2. Whether you are buying or selling, working

with a Realtor is key. Some 89 percent of buyers purchase their homes through a real estate agent. Only 9 percent of sellers sold their home without assistance from an agent. Realtors have invaluable insights into what sells a home and are the most trusted resource for real estate information. They know what buyers value in their local markets. They can help sellers protect their investment and buyers build theirs. For further facts and tips, visit www.houselogic.com/buyandsell.

charting his or her own course, many dif fer ent sights can be seen along the way, making an RV trip a truly customizable vacation. Because there are no check-in or out times, travelers can spend as little or as much time as they want at specific stops along the way. Also, renting a campsite is generally much less expensive than staying in a hotel room. With RV travel, there’s no need to pack and unpack from site to site. And meals can be eaten out, or money is saved by cooking some items right in the RV. One of the main advantages of RV travel is there is always a bathroom on hand. That means no rushing to find the next rest stop or gas station — an especially valuable asset to parents of young children. Many vacationers find that taking driving vaca-

uninterrupted vacation on a tropical coast. RV travel saves money on hotel fees, but the cost of gasoline can still make it an expensive venture. And while an RV’s builtin kitchen makes it easy to save on meals, for many people dining out and letting others do the dishes is an integral part of a good vacation. Comfort is another thing to consider. RVs do offer more amenities than sleeping in a tent at a campsite. However, beds are modest and there is the expectation that people will be in close proximity. If a husband or father snores, there is little escaping that noise. RV travel presents a very good option for lowcost family vacationing. But the pros and cons should be weighed, and the opinions of all involved can be considered before planning the excursion.

tions allow them to slow down and see the sites they would have missed had they traveled via air or train. Exploring such hidden gems is possible from an RV. Disadvantages Some of the things that make RVtravel advantageous are the things that others would pr efer to avoid. For example, the close quarters can become irritating after a long trip, as there are really no places to escape to in an RV for privacy. RVs can also be cumbersome to drive and do not have the same horsepower as a van or truck. This can make trips seem like they are crawling. While some people love the unpredictability of RV trips, others crave structure and the dependability of resort activities. RV travel takes work — planning stops, destinations and all the little details. This is certainly not an

(BPT) — “What is that rattling? Is it serious?” We all can get a little paranoid about a new sound our car is making. Those sounds can certainly be annoying, but what people don’t realize

crashes are caused by some kind of vehicle failure, with tire degradation and brake system failures topping the list, according to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey from

only types of vehicle problems that can lead to accidents — engine, steering system and suspension failures also cause crashes. “Getting your oil changed, tires rotated

helps keep you and your family safe,” said Matt Myers, senior vice president of claims with Erie Insurance. “It’s also important to check your car’s transmission fluids and get the 50,000-mile

and 100,000-mile checks. It might sound like a lot, but regular preventative mainte-

nance is the best way to keep those strange car noises — and accidents — to a minimum.” Here are six common car noises people hear and what they could mean: Humming or groaning When you hear humming while driving at faster speeds, it’s a sign there probably is some wear on your tires, which can lead to serious issues. It could be located on the insides of your tires, which is hard to diagnose on your own, but not having it checked is a risk, because the steel belts in the tire might be coming apart. Growling This noise could change or even go away when you turn the wheel, but it is usually caused by a defective front wheel bearing. The change in noise could be a result of the shift in the weight of the car as you turn. Whining and creaking You might hear these noises backing up or turning. It could be the result of a ball joint or tie

rod seizing up. Squeaking This can be a highpitched, steady annoyance that lets you know it’s time to get your brake pads checked or replaced. Grinding This sound means two pieces of metal are touching when they shouldn’t be. This sound could be a multitude of things: brakes, powertrain, suspension or something else. Whatever the case, a grinding sound means you need to get your car checked out as soon as possible. Hissing A hissing sound might occur after you turn off your ignition and can sometimes be followed by smoke from under your hood. The next time you hear strange noises coming from your car, don’t just turn up the radio to drown them out — get them checked by a mechanic. Ignoring those noises today could lead to a dangerous and expensive situation tomorrow.
