May 18, 2013 Hello Again, Last week the opening sentence for Hello Again was “What a marvelous change in the weather” This week, Monday morning, it could be “put on your long johns and button up the back flap. Boy it’s cold.” We thank the good Lord for nice weather, but I don’t have nerve enough to blame him for out of season cold weather, so I’ll just say thanks for a good day. How the years have gone by — it seems like yesterday our family had a young friend in our church family. Saturday we attended the 2013 Commencement Ceremony at Baptist Bible College and Seminary in Clark Summit, Pennsylvania. Wouldn’t you know it that same kid is now a mature man with a beautiful wife and a son who is a ninth grader. Saturday he walked the walk with cap and gown receiving his Masters Degree. You would think he was my son I was so proud. Now he can wear the tassel on the left side of his cap. We are expecting great things to happen in Salvatore J. (Sal) Malorana Jr.’s life serving his Lord, family and country. Possibly the educational walk he is on will lead from Bachelor, Masters Degrees onto Doctor of Ministry. Dr. Sal has a nice ring to it. At the present he is serving as Pastor in a Village Bible Believing Church. What I don’t understand about Sal is how did he ever get both of his heels to touch the ground at the same time. It never happened when he was a kid. At the college we were told to park our motor home in the faculty parking area not in the students’ parking lot. Locating the correct lot was easy. We found it with little trouble. We parked where all of the old cars were. Back in the hill country where I grew up, we learned the 3 R’s: read’n, rite’n, and ‘rithmatic. Often while reading we skipped over the big words. A born native could substitute a local word or expression, which usually worked even better. A conversation was often sprinkled with a cuss word or a word one never heard of before. To an outsider this could create a serious ‘confugalty’. By the time we kids graduated from the 6th grade we had polished village words and phrases into a fine art form including the kind, which brought on a mouthwashing with strong brown lye soap, I can still taste the soap and remember the words. To this day one of those words will slip out. Isn’t that some sort of proof that early education really sticks with you. We had our own way of handling ‘rithmatic. For example, if we owed someone $4 we would offer $2 + $1 and if someone owed $5, it would be come $3 + $3 which the sum would be $5. I received a rough-ruff (as in a barking dog) birthday card from an old friend and golfing buddy this week. A little pat on the back from “Ruby” Helfand made my day. He wrote, “You still do a very good job.” Elliott M. Helfand is now 94 and still plays golf at the Ryerson-Otsego Golf Course. Mrs. Helfand is a champion on or off the golf course. She often beats Ruby at golf and is unbeatable as a cookie baker. Ruby wrote, “It is hard to believe, it has been almost 30 years since I retired from the ‘Ruby’s’ store in Richfield

Springs.” Ruby, hit ‘em straight, hard and keep on eating those great cookies. God bless. A preacher was making his rounds on a bicycle, when he came upon a young boy trying to sell a lawn mower. “How much do you want for the mower?” asked the preacher. “I just want enough money to go out and buy me a bicycle.” said the boy. After a moment of consideration, the preacher asked, “Will you take my bike in trade for it?” The boy asked if he could try it out first. He told the preacher he hadn’t ridden a bicycle in a long time and wasn’t sure he remembered how to ride one. The preacher told him, “Just keep trying. It’ll come back to you.” After riding the bike around a little while, the boy said, “Mister, you’ve got yourself a deal.” The preacher took the mower and began to crank it. He pulled on the rope a few times with no response from the mower. The preacher called the youngster over and said, “I can’t get this mower to start.” The boy said, “That’s because you have to cuss at it to get it started.” The preacher said, “I can’t cuss. It’s been so long since I became a Christian that I don’t even remember how to cuss.” The little boy looked at him happily and said, “You just keep pulling on that rope. It’ll come back to you! Thanks, Uncle Jim Bob So you’re a little bit deaf and you would like to attend a play, concert, speech, movie or church and you know your probably will not be able to hear and understand, what can you do about it? You can choose 1. Stay at home, 2. Attend the event and realize you will not hear what’s going on, 3. Go and complain to deaf ears that you couldn’t hear. Should we say this may soon be all in the past. A new sound system is now available for buildings, which hold large crowds. It is called a hearing loop system. In a typical church the hearing loop system is installed under the carpet. The wire transits sound through a magnetic field, rather than acoustically, which means people with hearing aids receive the signal. Don’t lose faith. Winter is actually over for this year. Soon - I hope - we can pack away the long johns, break out the above-the-knee shorts and wear straw hats. Believe it or not summer is not a new invention, although some years it does seem to get squeezed between late spring and early fall. Milt Schilde at Sunnycrest always cautions not to transplant flowers before Memorial Day. Distance can separate friends and family but love will always win and draw them back together. Say hello to your closest friend, your next door neighbor. Thank god for family and friends and attend church this Sunday. Fred Lee and Family

What to know before you go — Top 10 things every rider must know about ATVs 1. ATVs are not toys! They are powerful and potentially dangerous vehicles. 2. ATVs can travel at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour and can weigh in excess of 700 pounds. 3. ATVs can easily roll and tip over. Their unpredictable nature in off-road conditions makes training and proper use essential. 4. In 2003, there were an estimated 740 deaths associated with ATVs, including 140 reported deaths that involved children. In 2004, an estimated 136,000 ATV-related injuries were treated in hospital emergency

rooms. 5. All riders should always wear a helmet when on an ATV. 6. About one-third of ATV-related deaths and injuries involve children. Anyone younger than 16 years of age should never be on an adult ATV. 7. Stay off paved roads and avoid unfamiliar terrain. 8. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV. 9. Do not drive an ATV while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 10. Stay safe when riding. Visit www.atvsafety.gov/s afetytips.html. Source: www. atvsafety.gov

A memorial to an old-time Mohawk Valley Native American artifact collector — Edward J. Brown 1857 – 1952 Displayed at Fort Plain Free Library from May through June, 2013

by Willis ‘Skip’ Barshied A trait that seems almost inborn to the human race is the tendency to accumulate or collect something which is special to them. Here in the middle Mohawk Valley where early man resided, numerous individuals began to gravitate toward preserving the artifacts which remained from their culture. These collectors picked from the fields while following the plow and searched known Native American sites for what they called Indian relics. The artifacts them-

selves were often placed in frames to protect them. I now wish to introduce one of those Mohawk Valley collectors who was part of my life from early childhood. That man was Edward Brown 1857 – 1952. Mr. Brown resided his entire life in the town of Canajoharie. The family had a farm in the Happy Hollow section of the town and it was there that his interest in Indians, their culture, and those artifacts they left began. A well known Indian site was on their family farm. In the dawning years of 1900s the Brown family moved to Canajoharie village but Mr. Brown’s search for artifacts continued for many years. Within his collection there are two small but now dilapidated leather covered books. Within them is recorded Mr. Brown’s record of where and when the artifacts were found. The earliest date is 1890 for finds at Allen Farm (Allen’s Woods) less than a mile east of the Brown Farm. In 1898 he was at Otstungo site in the town of Minden. In ensuing years he, doubtless along with fellow collectors, Close-ups of part of the collection on display in the Fort Plain Free Library through June 2013. Photos by Joan Kark-Wren

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • May 18, 2013 searched on area sites. The last date recorded was 1932. Many of his finds were skillfully arranged in frames while some were stored in cupboards up until this writer attained them. The family consisted of Edward, his wife Sarah Nichols Brown and two daughters, Anna Brown Davies, 1882 – 1931, and Nellie Brown Shineman, 1887 – 1977, my great aunt. The Brown family descended from German immigrants who first came to the area just prior to the mid 1800s. In thinking back over 70 years I’m drawn to the time I first became aware of Mr. Brown’s accumulated treasures. One day in about my sixth year I was taken to the Brown house. A curtain was drawn back exposing a small closet in which Mr. Brown kept his collection of framed artifacts. There was no doubt about his attachment for his special treassures. His great joy was showing them to friends and especially to young people. Doubtless even in his later years he still cherished them. One wonders if he ever thought of just what would some day happen to his collection. Edward Brown died on Christmas Day 1952 at the age of 95. Finally, each daughter took

part of the collection. When each passed away their part was willed to this writer. Now the trust of their final disposition rests again with an older person. That person hopes that these pieces of the past will be cherished and preserved in the valley where they were found. The Collection of William H. Whatchamacallits Though they appear to be very different, these items accomplish the same purpose. They are homemade scouring pads. Long before today’s scratch pads, these items were some of the tools our ancestors used to clean stubborn pots and pans. The version at right is bundled rush, tied with twine. The one at left, a slightly more complicated version, uses linked chain as the rough side, but has a smooth, leather or hide back for gentle scrubbing, as well. ~~~ Have your own Whatchamacallit? Antiques & Auctions Collecting

by Larry Cox Vietnam War Scrip Q: My dad was in the Vietnam War, and I have a $5 Military Payment Certificate from 1961. I have been offered $50 for it. — Bob, East St. Louis, MO A: According to “Vietnam War Collectibles” by David Doyle, U.S. personnel in Vietnam were not paid in cash, but rather in scrip known as Military Payment Certificates (MPC). This was done in an effort to curb black-

market activities. When leaving Vietnam, troops could exchange pay certificates for regular U.S. currency. Doyle values your $5 MPC at $125. Of special interest to collectors are those numbered 591, 611, 641, 651, 661, 681, 691, 692 and 701. Beware of reproductions, because some have popped up, especially at military shows. Preventing weeds in garden beds For newly planted beds a two to three inch deep layer of mulch will help keep weeds down until the plants grow and shade the ground. Take care to keep mulch away from the trunks of trees and shrubs as this encourages certain pest problems. Shredded leaves can

also be used as a temporary mulch. They will decompose and enrich the soil. A “living mulch” of ground covers and/or low perennials planted beneath trees and shrubs will add beauty and shade out annual weeds. Source: www.dec. ny.gov

In the grow by B. Rosie Lerner, Purdue Extension Consumer Horticulturist Q. I have quite a few of these plants coming up in the wooded area behind my house. They seem to grow around trees, and there are large clusters of them. The clusters seem larger than I remember last year. What are these and are they poisonous and/or invasive? Should I try to control them? A. This is the mayapple, aka mandrake, known botanically as Podophyllum peltatum. Mayapple is a lovely native woodland plant — no need to control. They do spread by rhizomes (underground stems) to form colonies. But their growing season is pretty short. Foliage (shown) comes up in mid spring. A single, white pendulous flower appears, usually in May, followed by a yellowish-green, fleshy ovoid berry (1-2 inches) that could resemble a small apple. The foliage dies back soon after. All parts of the mayapple plant are toxic, except for the ripe flesh of the fruit, but the seeds contained in the flesh are also toxic, as is unripe fruit. You will find this plant listed in folk medicine publications; there is research showing potential for treating cancer, but this seems limited by possible toxicity. Consuming mayapple can be quite dangerous, even fatal. Best to enjoy this plant with your eyes. Additional information on this plant is available at

This is a hammer by Samantha Mazzotta Ceramic tile floor marred by scratches Q: My kitchen has a ceramic tile floor, and several of the tiles have so many scratches that they look dull even after cleaning. Can I repair the scratches, or does the tile need to be replaced? — Carol in Eau Claire, WI A: Glazed ceramic tiles are tough and resistant to most of the wear and tear that happens in high-traffic areas, but they can still become scratched or dull over time. If the scratches are minor — they mark the finish but don’t go all the way through the color glaze — it’s possible to polish them out. First, clean and mop the floor so that you have a clear, debris-free surface to work on. Next, starting with the first scratched tile, apply a small amount of brass cleaner/polish to the scratch with a lint-free cloth, rubbing in circles. Let the polish dry, then buff away. If you don’t have brass cleaner, toothpaste or baking soda can

be used. To temporarily protect the tile surface, apply a bit of car wax — a plain paste wax, not cleaner wax, which has an abrasive in it — to the tile. Tiles that have been scratched too deeply to buff out or that are cracked or broken should be replaced. Locate extra tiles, if you have them, or purchase matching replacement tile (you may need to take a piece of the damaged tile, once removed, to match the color). Use a grout saw to carefully cut away the grout around the edges of the damaged tile. This creates a little wiggle room to loosen the tile without damaging surrounding tiles. Next, using a hammer and small chisel, gently tap the tile loose. (Place the chisel on or near the damage rather than at the edge of the tile where other tile might be damaged.) It’s okay if the damaged tile chips or cracks — save it to do your color match. Once the tile is removed, brush or cut away debris or loose adhesive. Fit the new tile into the

open space; if the tile fits correctly, apply a coat of tile adhesive to the back and fix it so that the spacing between the tile’s edges and the edges of the other tiles is even. Let the adhesive dry completely, and then fill the edges with grout that matches the color of the surrounding

grout. HOME TIP: Scraps of carpet and extra tiles are important to keep around for small repair jobs. Store them in one designated place, like a box or on a shelf in the garage, until needed. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Digging soon? Call 811 first for safety’s sake (BPT) — Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a free call to 811. Installing a mailbox or fence, building a deck and landscaping are all examples of digging projects that should only begin a few days after making a call to 811. Here’s how it works: 1. One free, simple phone call to 811 makes it easy for your local one-call center to notify all appropriate utility companies of your intent to dig. Call a few days prior to digging to ensure enough time for the approximate location of utility

lines to be marked with flags or paint. 2. When you call 811, a representative from your local onecall center will ask for the location and description of your digging project. 3. Your local onecall center will notify affected utility companies, which will then send professional locators to the proposed dig site to mark the approximate location of your lines. 4. Only once all lines have been accurately marked, roll up those sleeves and carefully dig around the marked areas. To find out more information, visit www.call811.com.

NYS Public Health Law requires that all dogs, cats and domestic ferrets shall have initial vaccinations administered against rabies no

later than 4 months of age and stay up to date with revaccinations. Revaccinations are required one year later and a booster shot every three years. It is important to have pets vaccinated in a timely manner in order for the pet to be considered protected against the virus. Pet owners should bring proof of their pet’s last rabies vaccination. This helps the veterinarian determine whether the pet will receive a one or three year vaccination; without it your pet will receive a one year vaccination only. To assure

Motorcycle statistics

Motorcyclist fatalities increased in 2011 to 4,612, accounting for 14 percent of total fatalities for the year. This increase in motorcycle fatalities for the year picks up the overall increasing trend over the last 14 years that saw a oneyear decline in 2009 when 4,469 motorcyclists were killed. The percentages of drivers involved in fatal crashes with a BAC level of .08 or higher in 2011 was

29 percent for motorcycles. In 2011, 60 percent of fatally injured motorcycle riders and 49 percent of fatally injured motorcycle passengers were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash. NHTSA estimates that helmets saved the lives of 1,617 motorcyclists in 2011. If all motorcyclists had worn helmets, an additional 703 lives could have been saved. The economic cost savings

due to helmet use was approximately $3.4 billion in 2011, and an additional $1.4 billion could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets. Over the past decade, the age group with the largest increase in motorcyclist fatalities (from 1,444 in 2002 to 2,565 in 2011) was the 40-and-older age group. Avoid odometer fraud

(NAPSI) — Smart used car shoppers know they’re better able to get a car that can take them far if they’re not misled about mileage. According to the Consumer Federation of America, one in 10 used cars on the market has had its odometer rolled

back. Fortunately, there are five ways you can tell if the car you’re considering is among them: 1. Check the vehicle’s title and compare the mileage listed on the title with the car’s odometer. 2. Compare the odometer’s mileage

with mileage recorded on maintenance and inspection documents. 3. If the vehicle has a traditional mechanical odometer, check that the numbers are aligned correctly. 4. Examine the tires. The car should

have its original tires if the odometer reads 20,000 miles or less. 5. Get a free Odometer Check at www.carfax.com/odo . Carfax provides trusted information that helps millions buy and sell cars with confidence.

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

Study: Exercise cuts kidney stone risk in women by Marilynn Marchione, AP Chief Medical Writer Women have another reason to exercise: It may help prevent kidney stones. You don’t have to

break a sweat or be a super athlete, either. Even walking for a couple hours a week can cut the risk of developing this painful and common

problem by about onethird, a large study found. “Every little bit makes a difference” and the intensity doesn’t matter — just getting a minimum

amount of exercise does, said Dr. Mathew Sorensen of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. He led the study,

which was to be discussed Friday at an American Urological Association conference in San Diego. About 9 percent of people will get a kidney stone sometime in their life. The problem is a little more common in men, but incidence has risen 70 percent over the last 15 years, most rapidly among women. Obesity raises the risk as do calcium supplements, which many women take after menopause. A government task force recently advised against supplements for healthy older women, saying that relatively low-dose calcium pills don’t do much to keep bones strong but make kidney stones more likely. The new research involved nearly 85,000 women 50 and older in the government-funded Women’s Health Initiative study. All had an exam to measure weight and height so doctors could figure out their body mass index, a gauge of obesity. They also filled out annual surveys on what they ate, so researchers could take into account things known to lower the risk of kidney stones, such as drinking a lot of fluids and eating less salt or meat. Participants said how much exercise they usually got and that was translated into “METs” — a measure of how much effort an activity takes. For example, 10 METs per week is about 2 1/2 hours of walking at a moderate pace, four hours of light gardening or one hour of jogging. After about eight years, 3 percent of the women had developed a kidney stone. Compared to women who got no leisure-time exercise, those who got up to five METs per week had a 16 percent lower risk for stones. The risk was 22 percent lower with five to 10 METs per

week and 31 percent lower for 10 METs or more. Exercise beyond 10 METs added no additional benefit for kidney stone prevention. Exercise intensity didn’t matter — just how much women got each week. “We’re not asking people to run marathons. This is just a very mild to moderate additional amount of activity,” Sorensen said. Why might exercise help? It changes the way the body handles nutrients and fluids that affect stone formation. Exercisers sweat out salt and tend to retain calcium in their bones, rather than having these go into the kidneys and urine where stones form. They also tend to drink water and fluids afterwards, another plus for preventing stones. “There’s something about exercise itself that probably produces things in your urine that prevent stone formation,” said one expert not involved in the work, Dr. Kevin McVary. He is chairman of urology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL, and a spokesman for the urology group. “It’s not just being skinny or not being fat, it’s something about the exercise that protects you.” Exercise is known to cut the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions that raise the risk of kidney stones. Next, researchers want to study men and younger women to see if exercise helps prevent kidney stones in them, too.
